[SOLVED] Increase free disk space

When I formatted my CR-48, I formatted the entire disk for the root partition. Here is the output of "df -h"

Edit: one more thing that's bugging me. "df" shows you the file system disk space usage. Why do dev/run/tempfs show up here?

Why doesn't my free disk space increase when I delete files on Mountain Lion?

I just upgraded my Macbook Air to Mountain Lion. Now whenever I delete files my free disk space doesn't increase. I show only 500Mb free space now (out of 120Gb), even though I just deleted 50Gb of files. I tried to reinstall Mountain Lion, but it said I don't have enough space. I have a very simple setup, with no external apps except for Office 2011. I am NOT using Time Machine (I have it set to "off"), or any other backup programs, so I don't think this is the problem.
Also, I noticed that whenever I move a file to the trash, I am asked for my password, which is extremely annoying.
I am living in France, far from the nearest Apple store. Can anyone help? Thanks.

You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.

buy an external HD 1TB for $60
NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace. You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

Sudden increase in disk space?

I've been working with 20 GB or so available on my startup disk for around 6 months now.
A couple of days ago I got the Startup Disk almost full message. I saved my work and rebooted.
That solved the problem and I gained 3-4 GB.
Yesterday morning suddenly I had 100+GB of free disk space!
No emptying the trash, no time machine running, norhing.
Any ideas on this matter?
I'm running Lion 10.7.5 on an iMac

I work mainly with big video files. Almost all of my work is on external hard disks. They seem to be fine. So I have my stuff backed up. But I don't run Time Machine or any backup software.
I've read that if you are using Time Machine there is a discrepancy because of snapshots, but as I mentioned, I don't use Time Machine.

Free disk space recommendation

I have a question about free disk space recommendation. My system now has <25% free space at ASP3, I can't see any problems until now, but I think that I can some troubles in the future depending on DB growth, it isn't?
Have you any tip about this? Are there any recommendation in IBM i5 redbooks?

Generally you do not want to go much higher than 70 to 80% utilization.
This is because the system may need the free space for system operations, temporary storage and to allow for spikes in storage that may occur when processing heavy workloads, such as temporary work space or for transient files, journal receivers, system logs and spool entries (QSPL as opposed to SAP's own spooling).
Certain systems functions, such as dedicated physical file reorganizations, have specific minimum requirements with respect to the need for free space.
At this point, you are at 75% utilization which puts you right in the middle of the range where you really want to examine what is going on.
Usually when you hit 90% or above you will start to get messages from the OS about high storage.
You can free up space in several ways. Only keep journal receivers for as long as you need them. Once they are detached and saved offline (tape/remote jounals etc) they can be deleted. You need to have a strategy in place for this, however. Our shop archives a full save on a weekly basis, and all journal receivers up to that point (with a small margin retained for visibility) are deleted.
In addition, we use Datamirror's High Availability product which scrapes the journal receivers to mirror the production system on a hot backup. The receivers must remain on the system until they are replicated (this is also true for other High Availability products). This is usually near real-time, but it can be an issue if you do not manage it properly. (Given our weekly archive strategy, this is not an overriding consideration for us, but it may be important for those with a different strategy.)
SAP uses the reuse deleted records feature of DB2, but sometimes excessive amounts of deleted records build up due to spikes, especially in files like VBDATA and related files, or after purging older transaction history or deleting old clients. You can periodically reorganize physical files to reclaim deleted space.
You can also use RCLSTG (Reclaim storage) and RCLSPLSTG (Reclaim Spool Storage) to reclaim some temporary space.
However, RCLSTG should only be used if there is a specific need for it, as outlined in IBM's technical note: <a href="http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/0/9373303619fb4b89862565c2007d4bcf?OpenDocument&ExpandSection=1">Overview of the RCLSTG Command</a>
Periodic IPLs will also reclaim space, including spool space as if RCLSPLSTG had been run..
If you have other libraries on your system, you can also see if they are being managed wisely using the same ideas as you would use for your SAP libraries.
Within SAP itself there are tools to manage tables that are within the scope of you various SIDs and clients. When SAP purges data, however, it only does a soft delete via DB2 SQL, and a physical file reorg as noted above may be required to reclaim space at the OS level.
As the previous respondent noted, you should keep track of the growth of your system and then take whatever steps are necessary to bring storage down or increase storage.
You may also want to consider your storage strategy. We had been using full mirroring, and we were able to increase our effective storage by going to RAID-5, and therefore put off the need to buy more disk for a time.

Free disk space issue after iOS5

I have an iPad 1 16GB and after I updated to iOS5 the free disc space reduced so that now I have only 3GB free. 10,6GB is shown as "other". Can anybody tell me what this is and how I can increase the free disk space?

It shouldn't be that large unless, for example, you've got lots of videos in third-party video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) - it's usually caused by corrupt files. The only way the I know of reducing the size of 'other' is to restore back to factory defaults, and you could then try restoring to your backup which hopefully won't copy the 'other' back (or you might have to just sync content back and not restore to your backup).

Issue 2: Not enough free disk space

Well, now that I'm here, I will try to figure out all my problems.
Ignoring the fact that my MacBook won't turn on, once it goes back to normal, I hope I can solve another thing. Two or three times, while I've been working in heavey Word documents in my Macbook, a message box appears when I click on save or when it tries to do "Autorecovery". It says there's not enough free disk space for me to save that file. What I do every time is I select all, then copy and then quit word. I open it again, paste and save. Everything is fine, but I'd really like to know *** is wrong since I do have a lot of free disk space and this doesn't happen unless it's a heavy file in word. Should I get rid of some apps? Unused files? I don't have that many... I think my Macbook is acting weird since I've almost got nothing stored in it but files, pictures and songs. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening again?

Get Info on your hard drive or open a finder window and see how much space is available on your drive - that's at the bottom. Music, pictures, movies use more disk space than most files. You might have enough space sometimes because various programs - like Safari - cache material and the caches can get large. Some caches empty themselves and others need to be emptied; you can empty the Safari cache from one of the menus.

Checking free disk space after setting up Boot Camp?

I've just gone thru the install process for putting Windows 8 on my MB Air. Can anyone point me to info on keeping an eye on free disk space?
I have a 128Mb SSD drive, and prior to installing Win 8 I cleared a lot of media files off the SSD (which took ages to secure delete), but when I used the 'Get Info' option to see how much space had been freed up, the free space did not appear to increase by the amount I had deleted (we're talking about 22Gb of material deleted!).
Anyway I created a Windows partition of 30Gb. When I boot into Win8 it reports only a few Gb free of the 30Gb partition... When I boot into MacOS it reports 36Gb free of the 90Gb partition.
Any help or links greatfully received!

Which internal drive option did you pick? The 3TB Fusion, 1TB Fusion or the standard drive option. It Matters.
If the 3TB Fusion model you can't install windows even with Boot Camp unless you jump through some Hoops and first brake apart the Fusion drive.
If 1TB Fusion or standard drive then you will need a Windows PC to make USB thumb drive containing the Win 7 install files. you do that with a tool MS has, Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool, or Yumi Multiboot or ISO to USB. And you first may have to make an ISO from the DVD or go to My Digital Life and download the ISO file of the version of Win 7 you buy and have a License key for, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.
Other then that you start Boot Camp Assistant, Found in the Utilities folder in Applications, and download the Win Support files and then partition the drive for Windows. It is all laid out in the Boot Camp help files and or online documentation.

When I try to create a database, I have this error message:

When I run *# df -h* I have:

and
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol10

and with vgdisplay I have:

Free PE / Size 0 / 0
My info is:

I do not know how to solve this.

Erase Free Disk Space

I erased free disk space on my computer. Now my disk is almost full. How can I get the space back free and clear?

Are you saying that erasing increased the volume of data on the disc ??
I suggest you grab a utility like WhatSize or DiscInventoryX and they will show you what files are using space and what can be deleted.

Unable to free disk space on macbook pro.

I have this weird problem. I have deleted some big files (In GB) to free up HD space, but my Mac HD free disk space stays the same, it is not increasing as it should. I had like 3.7 GB free space. I deleted 4GB files and it still shows 3.7GB free space. I deleted everything from 'Trash' and even tried restarting the computer. What seems to be the problem?

It seems to have something to do with a backup and/or FileVault. Also, do you have any third party apps for backing up, cleaning your Mac, AV protection or anything like that installed?

"Not Enough Free Disk Space" on exporting slideshows

I have about 100GB of free space on my HD and Iphoto 8.1.1 is now showing "Not Enough Free Disk Space" when I try to export a slideshow. Anyone had this kind of problem? Any idea how to solve this?

Some basic fixes to try:
Repair Permissions with Disk Utility
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Free Disk Space vs Mac Memory Usage

Hi,
I'm wondering if you might be able to help me - I'm so confused with this issue.
I have a MacBook 2008 with an upgraded 320GB HDD, with currently 203GB free disk space.
My back up disk is 120GB - perfect for a time machine back up of 117 GB of data. However, the TM says theres not enough memory because the full size of the back is 150GB? How can this be?
For some reason, the free disk space figure is different to the memory usage figures in About My Mac?
Can anyone explain to me why this is?
My other half uses this computer and has only pictures and files on it, no music or movies? So how can she have utilised 117GB of data? This was previously a shared Mac, but I've deleted my user acc since upgrading and wanted to make this Mac entirely hers.
Any help regarding this will be truly appreciated.

CarbonCopyClone. It is "donateware" ... pay if you want to. Others use SuperDuper! (both a free and a paid version). I prefer CCC, but do not let that stop you from paying for SuperDuper if others convince you as both are very competent.
It makes a bootable copy of your system partition, and used repeatedly will make "incremental" backups that take far less time than the original backup. I have a TimeMachine backup (I consider it "secondary") and a CCC backup whic I consider "primary" and will eventually save me when my system partition gets cranky and refuses to boot -- use the option key at startup to choose the external disk to boot from.
When you boot from the external drive, which will have CCC running in it, you can then "clone back" to the new internal drive.

Update download trouble: App Store says, in error, "-not enough free disk space"

I wonder if anyone can help me troubleshoot this... I am unable to download some updates as from the App Store, and instead get an error message that suggests I don't have enough free disk space despite there being over 100GB free.
More detail: after installing Mavericks successfully, I started updating a few applications. While downloading iMovie and iPhoto there was an error - can't recall what the pop-up said, but I think it was a fairly general kind of error message. When I then tried to download them again, the App Store gave me an error message about free disk space, so I deleted a bunch of files and tried again. Same result, same error message ("Your hard disk does not have enough free space"). I checked on free space, however, and at this point I had over 100GB of free space.
I tried deleting the com.apple.storeagent folder in my Library/Caches folder, then trying again. but it made no difference. I've restarted, repaired permissions, verified the disk, restarted again, and I'm still seeing the error.
One odd feature of this problem: in the App Store purchases tab (see screengrab below), the icons for both iMovie and iPhoto are missing/broken, which might just point the way to what is going wrong.

2.8GHz i7
12GB RAM
Running OS X 10.9

If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then turn it backON and close the preference pane. Wait a few minutes, then try the operation again.
