[SOLVED]Infinality - blurry font

After installing arch new with old /home I installed under Xfce the following
freetype2-git-infinality lib32-freetype2-git-infinality freetype2-infinality
and the font got blurry.
On firefox it's looking ugly as well, here're some examples:
krusader, http://imgur.com/jbxuC
libreoffice, http://imgur.com/vEapa - menu shows only rectangles
Installed xf86-video-ati 1:7.0.0-1 and xorg-server 1.13.0-4.
.xlog shows the following errors

I have problems with freetype2-git-infinality, too, so I installed stable + fontconfig-infinality-git to get rid of the fontconfig warnings:

That's working for me, thx Doc!

  • [SOLVED] Infinality patchset font substitution

    OK, I decided to test the infinality patchset for my fonts, rather than the ubuntu patches I was using, and by and large I could be happy, but for one very annoying problem.
    My preferred desktop font is DejaVu Sans Book, but no matter how many times I try to set it, it gets changed to Verdana. I'm guessing that somewhere Verdana is set up in font substitution, but I can't for the life of me find it.
    The same happens if I try to set the terminal font to DejaVu Sans Book, though setting the terminal to DejaVu Sans Mono works (which is what I prefer in a terminal anyway).
    I've done my research - but if I'm honest there doesn't seem to be that much documentation around.

    Ahh - thanks guys. You got me looking in the right place. The pesky substitution was in 41-repl-os-win.conf
    Now fixed
    Pretty sure that if you change your infinality style to "Linux" it uses DejaVu Sans (or doesn't replace it).  By default, it uses "infinality" as the style, purely because I like it and that's the one I use.    See /etc/fonts/infinality/infinality.conf (assuming Arch uses that).

  • Mac mini (2012) blurry font

    I purchased my 3rd mac mini  this week; a 2012 late model. I previously owned a 2006 & 2009 model. None of my previous models had this issue. Some of the font looks incredibly blurry and gray. The mac is connected via HDMI. I've been through all the settings in display  (over scan/ smooth font) and no combination of these settings affect the blurry font display with the acception of selecting "No Overscan". Selecting "No Overscan" REDUCED the blurry font, but failed to eliminate it. Selecting "No Overscan" also had the adverse effect of expanding the display beyond the visible boundaries of my monitor so that is not an option. I've tested different HDMI cables and a completely different monitor. Nothing has solved this issue.
    I am running 10.4.8. My previous macs all displayed fonts sharp and crisp. I've also read that using an HDMI / DVI adpter works in some cases. Neither of my monitors have a DVI connection....
    Any input is appreciated.

    I have looked through those threads along with a few others. It appears that the best luck people have had is using a dvi / hdmi converter. However I don't believe this is possible as neither of my monitors have a dvi output. I've read that updating to 10.8.3 fixed this for a handful of users; but again, I'm running 10.8.4.
    Also, I find it odd that when I turn underscan off, the visible screen expands beyond the viewing pane of my monitor. Shouldn't it fit perfectly when I have 1080P selected? Not all the font is as blurry as others. Some font is extremely blurry, and some font looks fine.
    Edit: Underscan (off) would make the font "acceptable", but it just stretches the image off my monitor, so I can't disable underscan. While it would be acceptable, it still has a blur effect to some font. With underscan on, the font is horrendous. That's not an exaggeration.

  • Blurry font after switching from WinXP to Win 7 (Was:Schrift im Dreamweaver CS 3  verschwommen)

    <Preran> For the benefit of moderators here, I used Google to translate your content into English:
    Good day,
    I have problems with blurry font in Dreamweaver CS3 after switching from Windows XP to Windows 7
    I have already tried the following:
    In "Edit" Preferences "change font size" - unfortunately that does not work. (which had worked fine in the previous changeover to Windows XP)
    Then I got in the forum www. office-loesungen.de the tip, sometimes seen on the control panel display, which percentage is set.
    When I got the set to the mean value, the writing was not so blurry, but still not really readable.
    Experiments with Clear adjust TypeText were not successful.
    There is a trick, so the font is larger
    If I have to "small" hinders the size that was at 0.75 in the previous pages, it is readable for me, so I could enter the text and read it.
    However, the text is then when uploading larger.
    What can I do now?
    For speedy help I would be grateful
    Best regards
    Guten Tag,
    Renate Gundel

    I've done this multiple times and it produces essentially the same message, but there is a mention that a restart is pending. This is also strange because this is definitely not the case. First time I used CScleaner it took a while and was obviously busy correcting something. However now when I select clean all, it simply dumps anopther massive log file into AppData and says cleaning completed successfully. Now I just ran it again, so would you like me to post the more recent log file?

    infinality-bundle-fonts: a free multilingual font collection for Arch Linux
    infinality-bundle-fonts is meant to be a complete, 'install-and-forget' solution for most (Arch) Linux users looking for easy access to common type-faces diversity needed to create and reproduce (hyper)text documents. It consists of freely available, hand-picked fonts providing correct, uniform and high quality rendering of multilingual content.

    Languages covered and special cases
    Wikipedia was used as a reference when testing Latin and non-Latin linguistic scenarios and I believe that the majority of users should be satisfied with the results (the completeness, rendering quality, readability, clarity, coherence… you name it).
    If in doubt, you can easily check which font family is used to display a particular script:
    [~] $ fc-match :lang=ja
    sawarabi-gothic-medium.ttf: "Sawarabi Gothic" "Medium"
    Before you install a third-party font package, first check if it is already present in the infinality-bundle-fonts repository.
    The default sans family is Noto Sans. However, in order to preserve the correct layout of certain web documents, Liberation Sans will remain the replacement for Arial. The width difference between the two could be problematic for certain websites prioritizing Arial/Helvetica over 'anything sans' (rather than 'anything serif'). Websites intentionally designed to use any sans font will select Noto Sans by default.
    There is an extensive choice of available serif type-faces: the default is Heuristica, others include Crimson Text, Merriweather, TeX Gyre Termes, Gentium family, and more.
    A few popular font packages available in the Arch Linux official repositories were re-packed in order to avoid rendering issues.
    A few packages available in the AUR were re-packed for compatibility reasons.
    You will be notified if a package you already have in your system should be replaced with a corresponding one from the infinality-bundle-fonts repository.  If this is the case, just hit 'Y' to accept and install the new one.
    Additional font files can be found in infinality-bundle-fonts-extra group.  Some may be handy extensions for particular scripts (like 'ttf-dejavusans-yunati-*-ibx'), others are strictly optional and task specific.  The 'extra' group is expected to offer those few quality bits that users most often need to use but that do not belong to the main set. Suggestions are welcome. Note: 'extra' is not a place for 10 mono / sans / decorative type-faces, etc. This is technically impossible due to server bandwidth limits and practically against the usability principle that a well organized general purpose font collection should offer.
    Licensing
    The files available in the infinality-bundle-fonts repository are freely available for download, redistribution, personal and/or commercial use. 95% of the fonts are licensed under the GPL, Apache or OFL license. The remaining 5% can still be freely distributed and used under certain conditions specified by the author and/or the foundry. Please, consult a particular license for details if a proper license matters to you.

  • Blurry fonts on the screen - Windows 8.1- Framemaker 12

    I installed a group of adobe fonts bought in 2002 in Windows 8.1 by clicking every .PFM file and clicking on the install button. Everything seems fine. According to the Microsoft support knowledge base, the .PFM file should be in the windows-->fonts directory. And they are at the right place. Each font comes with two files with different  file extension : a .PFM and a .PFB file extension but I cannot see the .PFB files. Is it normal ?
    The question : why my fonts look so blurry on the screen, I simply cannot work.
    Thank you.

    As long as both the PFM and PFB files are in the same folder, they should be properly installed when you right-click on the PFM file and select the Install option. The PFM file contains the metrics for the font, while the PFB file contains the glyph outlines in a binary format.
    Type 1 fonts are supported through the Windows GDI (graphics device interface). There where issues with GDI+ and the newer WPF ( Windows Presentation Foundation) used in newer applications doesn't support Type 1 fonts.
    For your specific Type 1 fonts, you should switch to the TTF equivalents supplied with Windows 8.1, e.g. TimesNewRoman, Arial, Courrier New. These contain unicode encodings and have substantially more glyphs available than in the old Type 1s (which were code-page specific and restricted to 255 glyphs), i.e. time to retire the old ones.
    Also, if you try an online search, you'll find that there are quite a number of issues with Win8 and fuzzy,blurry font rendering, e.g.

  • [solved] vconsole.conf FONT setting is not respected in systemd

    I recently converted my Arch system to a pure systemd setup (as described here), and everything seems to be working as before.
    Well, almost everything.
    Prior to switching over to systemd, I had already moved all config settings (except for the DAEMONS line) out of /etc/rc.conf and into the individual config files, and at that time, I had set up /etc/vconsole.conf as follows:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=ter-216n
    FONT_MAP=8859-2
    When running under initscripts, this was working fine, and I would get the nice Terminus font at my console TTYs. Now, running under systemd, the consoles are no longer using Terminus. Instead, I just get the default font (whatever it's called). It's as if the FONT I set in /etc/vconsole.conf is being ignored.
    systemctl reports the following, indicating (I think) that the systemd-vconsole-setup service ran successfully:
    [owner@computer ~]$ systemctl status systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    systemd-vconsole-setup.service - Setup Virtual Console
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service; static)
    Active: active (exited) since Wed, 08 Aug 2012 08:31:51 -0700; 9h ago
    Docs: man:systemd-vconsole-setup.service(8)
    man:vconsole.conf(5)
    Process: 151 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    So, I'm stuck. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Yes, you're right. I have updated my /etc/vconsole.conf accordingly.
    However, I just tested this, and it turns out that my FONT_MAP mistake was not relevant to my original problem.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start
    Interesting. It turns out that using early KMS start also solves my console font problem. I think I prefer this solution, since it doesn't involve overriding systemd-vconsole-setup.service. Enabling early KMS start feels like a less invasive change. As documented here, I simply added i915 to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, and then rebuilt the /boot/initramfs-* files.

  • Blurry fonts in korganizer 3.5.5 [testing]

    Hello,
    Since I updated KDE to 3.5.5, korganizer is acting weird. It's fonts are blurry and the start command (korganizer --import %u) doesn't work anymore, I had to change it to korganizer only. Anyone else is having these problems?
    Regards,
    Gustavo
    EDIT: The blurry fonts must be caused by the new freetype.

    GO to SE73 in BI system and change the system fonts it will automatically reflect in WAD.

  • [SOLVED] My firefox fonts are too blurry / smooth

    Hello, Im a mint user so far but I really want to move to Arch but my fight versus Fonts are not good:
    Fonts 3 - Me 1
    No luck
    I readed the wiki enough times but I'm not a font expert, but I tried a lot of stuff.
    So far:
    I installed win7 fonts from AUR, ttf-mac (for lucida grande), and obviously dejavu and liberation.
    The fonts are good, but I can't render them properly.
    This is my .fonts.conf:
    <?xml version='1.0'?>
    <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
    <fontconfig>
    <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="rgba">
    <const>none</const>
    </edit>
    </match>
    <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="hinting">
    <bool>true</bool>
    </edit>
    </match>
    <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
    <const>hintslight</const>
    </edit>
    </match>
    <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
    <bool>true</bool>
    </edit>
    </match>
    </fontconfig>
    I have dualhead (24"+24" (but 16:10 / 16:9), 3840+1200) with twinview.
    I dont know what dpi I have ("xdpyinfo | grep dot" says 93x94 but.. I have two monitors and xorg treats it like a big one).
    About my fonts.conf, I tried the lcddefault (no changes), I can't use any rgba option (I got a weird double color / shadow behaviour).
    In short, that is the conf that have the best results.
    Problems: I saw that the fonts color are always slightly light and blurry.
    Example:
    Arch blurry (the color problem is not noticed with blue)
    http://i.imgur.com/XSNT4.png
    Ubuntu crisp:
    http://i.imgur.com/pnhWE.png
    I admit that are not that bad, but is there
    With bigger fonts, the problem is more noticiable but I have not found a clear example.
    I looked all mint configurations, tried to imitate it, but the fonts still renders different. (same .ttf)
    Ideas? Thanks.

    I changed the images for links
    And yes, near identical.
    I digged deeper. Without ".fonts.conf" and using gnome 3 with slight hint and antialiasing to "rgba", the result is good enough (I don't know where gnome-tweak-tool saves the config).
    Seems like gnome activates subpixel (rgb) and uses a lcddefault. I tried subpixel in the past but was kinda "missplaced" so the effect was really bad.
    So, activating rgb subpixel and using lcddefault, solves the problem, well, at least same result as ubuntu / mint
    So, I will mark this as solved, and I hope it helps who comes after

  • [SOLVED] Infinality font bundle not working correctly in urxvt / xterm

    I've been using Infinality fonts, and installed them from this:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … le%2Bfonts
    The fonts look great in every application, except for terminals (urxvt / xterm, but most likely others as well).
    In my .Xdefaults, I have:
    *urxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:pixelsize=14,style=regular
    But using this setting just displays some ugly fallback font, and I got similar results when trying Monospace and others.
    http://i.imgur.com/nMdIMbv.png
    I've gathered that the output of "xlsfonts" should include the names of my infinality fonts, but it doesn't look like it does:

    I've also tried rebuilding the font cache with "fc-cache -f", but no dice.
    I don't understand why fonts work correctly everywhere except for urxvt. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Doesn't look like I have a ttf available, hmm...

  • [SOLVED] Infinality Font Configuration

    I recently installed the Infinality patchsat {freetype2-git-infinality} and the corresponding Windows 7 fonts {ttf-win7-fonts} packet and ever since I have not had any fonts available other than the ones which were installed with the ttf-win7-fonts package.
    Passing fc-cache -f -v returns
    [zadmin@zlaptop artwiz-fonts]$ fc-cache -f -v
    /usr/share/fonts: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 10 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/100dpi: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/75dpi: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF: caching, new cache contents: 130 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/Type1: caching, new cache contents: 35 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/artwiz-fonts: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/cantarell: caching, new cache contents: 2 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/cyrillic: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/encodings: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 1 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/encodings/large: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/misc: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /usr/share/fonts/util: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    /home/zadmin/.fonts: skipping, no such directory
    /var/cache/fontconfig: not cleaning unwritable cache directory
    /home/zadmin/.fontconfig: cleaning cache directory
    fc-cache: succeeded
    I also don't understand why it is reporting that there are 0 fonts in directories when I know there are fonts. For example, in /usr/share/fonts/artwiz-fonts:
    [zadmin@zlaptop ~]$ ls /usr/share/fonts/artwiz-fonts/
    As a result any application which was using fonts not found within the Windows 7 font set displays incorrectly.
    It seems that /etc/fonts/local.conf is replaced with /etc/fonts/conf.avail/52-infinality.conf and my ~/.Xresources is no longer needed. Could that have anything to do with it?

    It seems that Infinality also disables bitmap fonts in the 52-infinality.conf file. The solution is to edit the following section in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/52-infinality.conf
    <!-- Reject bitmap fonts in favour of Truetype, Postscript, etc. -->
    <match target="font" >
    <test name="allow_bitmap_fonts" qual="any" >
    <bool>true</bool>
    </test>
    <test name="rendering_style" qual="any" >
    <string>Infinality</string>
    <string>Windows 7</string>
    <string>Windows XP</string>
    <string>OSX</string>
    <string>OSX2</string>
    </test>
    <selectfont>
    <rejectfont>
    <pattern>
    <patelt name="scalable" >
    <bool>false</bool>
    </patelt>
    </pattern>
    </rejectfont>
    </selectfont>
    </match>
    <!-- Substitute truetype fonts for bitmap ones -->
    <match target="pattern" >
    <test name="allow_bitmap_fonts" qual="any" >
    <bool>true</bool>
    </test>
    <test name="rendering_style" qual="any" >
    <string>Infinality</string>
    <string>Windows 7</string>
    <string>Windows XP</string>
    <string>OSX</string>
    <string>OSX2</string>
    </test>
    <edit name="prefer_outline" >
    <bool>true</bool>

  • Blurry Font problem

    Ever since I downloaded Acrobat Reader version 9.1.2, I have the following problem about 75% of the time:  whenever I open an Adobe file, it comes up in a font which is, for want of a better description, blurry.  It makes it much more difficult -- and in some isolated cases, impossible -- to read such files.  The weird thing is, sometimes the files still come up just fine, in a normal "solid-looking" font.
    Anybody out there have any suggestions on how I might solve this problem?
    Thanks very much . . .

    This helped a lot.  Thanks very much, Mr. Kazlow!

  • Blurry Fonts in Photoshop CS5

    Hi I recently downloaded the cs5 trial after using cs4 for a while but all of the fonts now appear blurry when i type but if i open a document made in cs4 the fonts are fine. Any help?

    I strongly recommend you try to get to the bottom of why you're having a "malfunction" rather than try to delete protected system fonts.  Windows protects those fonts for a reason, and trying to remove them WILL net you other problems.
    For what it's worth, the fonts you have named all work great on my Windows 7 system in Photoshop, so there's some specific problem with your setup (Photoshop?  Your system?) that you really need to solve.
    Not having seen the particular problem you're reporting, I don't really know how to tell you to get more information, but I definitely advise you to try to solve that problem directly and not delete the fonts.
    Because you've already removed the above fonts, I suspect at some point you may need to reinstall windows (although it may have restored them automatically).  I recommend you run the command SFC /SCANNOW /VERIFYONLY on your system (from a CMD window started as Administrator).  Windows will tell you whether it is in need of repair.

  • [SOLVED] Incorrect / Ugly Fonts in Epiphany Web Browser

    Hello everyone. I've done a ton of a searching (here and google) on this subject to no avail. It seems fonts on Facebook / Tumblr as well as some other sites have very incorrectly rendered fonts.
    I am currently using the freetype2-ubuntu patch and I have the ttf-win8 fonts installed as well. I also have the google fonts package installed.
    Here are some screenshots of what I am seeing.

    Hello everyone. I solved the issue myself.
    It turns out that installing infinality from AUR was NOT a good idea. After doing a proper install using the pacman key and adding it to pacman.conf I now have beautiful fonts. Thanks for the responses!

  • Web Application Designer in 2004s has blurry fonts

    Hi
    We are on SP12.  When changing the fonts to bold in the charts, the fonts are blurry.
    Anyone had this problem and solved it?
    Thanks
    Kristen

    Hi Kristen,
    blurry means you have activated the anti-aliasing effect of the texts. This effect is also described in note 1002118. To deactivate it just set the Transparency Color in the global settings of the chart (WAD - Edit Chart Item - Refine - Global Settings) to an RGB value (i.e. not None).
    Please also make sure to use IGS 7.00 patch 10 when changing this setting (see note 1071032).
    Regards, Kai
