SOLVED: Installation of NVidia Driver messes with BASH? (x86-64)

Hello,
I just started using Arch - I migrated here from Gentoo (I failed to compile a working kernel five times!) and the convoluted messiness of Debian (which had serious problems with the proprietary NVIDIA driver). Within three hours after I began installing Arch it booted fine and I got nearly all my devices to work. Yaaay!
I've recently encountered a peculiar problem that occurs after installing GNOME on a 64-bit system. I've re-installed Arch three times, and have seen this problem three times repeated: after all the gnome and gnome-extra packages have been downloaded, unpacked, configured, and installed, BASH no longer recognizes most of the programs that were already installed properly (and were working fine just beforehand);
I get "command not found" for such commands as make, dhcpcd, modprobe, ifconfig, even reboot and shutdown!!!
It may have something to do with a message I noticed somewhere in pacman's output that was something to the extent of "updating bash..."
...Is this a common problem? Or is this user error on my part? When I get home I'll retrieve the config files from my mid-tower's hard drive and post the non-comment parts if that will help diagnose the problem.

problem: SOLVED --
I found an old stage 3 tarball (gentoo) from my USB drive that had ./etc/profile in it. I stuck that in /etc/ and it's working fine In fact, it's got some nice features already written into it, i.e. optionally different default paths for the superuser and normal users.
Just in case anyone else has the same problem, finds this thread in a forum search and needs an /etc/profile:
# /etc/profile: login shell setup
# That this file is used by any Bourne-shell derivative to setup the
# environment for login shells.
# Load environment settings from profile.env, which is created by
# env-update from the files in /etc/env.d

  • Ultra 40 fx3500 nvidia driver problem with XP

    Hello,
I have a Sun Ultra 40 Workstation with an fx3500 graphic-card. With Solaris, Mandriva and 64Bit-Windows
the card works without problems. But with XP 32-Bit only the old 9x drivers from Nvidia work. If I try to
install a driver-release above 100 (today I tried 191.00, but I also have tried many other releases) the driver
installs fine. But after rebooting the workstation powercycles short before the Windows-Login-Screen
appears and Windows boots in "Safe-Mode". Then I can install the old 9x drivers and XP works again.
I tried a tool which wipes out the old Nvidia-driver first, bevor installing the new one, but no success.
Why is it not possible to install new Nvidia-drivers?
After the second boot when the driver has failed to load, the following messages appears on the screen
    after the Bios has finished:
    "Nvidia Rom Bios" "Detecting Arrays"
I could not read the whole text, because the message appears only a very short time, so I could not
read the message exactly. But the message only appears after the problem with the graphics card driver.
I have not configured disk-arrays. I'm not shure, but is it possible that there is something wrong with
the Nvidia-fx3500, the Nvidia-mainboard-Chipset and the Nvidia-graphics-driver above the 100. release.
    Can you please help me?
    Best Regards
    Ralf

First of all, thank you guys for your replies, and sorry if I answer you late; but I was tring to apply some of your suggestions.
    pharao:
My old card was "the stupid" (Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT with Kyro 4000XT chipset)
    Hotoro:
What do you mean by reload Windows XP? Un/Re-Install it?! It is not a good solution for me, at least, right now. I have huge data, my settings and a lot of application installed that needs days to restore or reconfigure, and I do not think that I have that much time.
    daveg4otu (Dave):
Thank you for your help. I already removed old card drivers and registry entries, and now I also removed the new ones using "Driver Cleaner" as you suggest, but the same was the result
    Raven236:
No, my old card was not ATI. OK, I will try this new driver (56.72), but I can not keep downloading all drivers without result, can I?
    coollg:
I do not think so, because the card is working fine on the same PC on Windows 98SE. So, it is not Mainboard, AGP or compatibility problem, as I think. In other hand, you are right, I am not expecting to get the maximum performance from that card, I am, now, looking for the minimum.
Did I have to do someting else?!!!
    Thanks again.

  • Both nouveau and nVidia driver problems with Stellarium

Stellarium v0.12.4 with either xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9-1 or nvidia (latest driver) and an nVidia MCP78S (GeForce 8200) chip usually results in either distorted graphics and sometimes complete system lock-up.
The nVidia driver is worse, nouveau sometimes works but its a crap shoot. This has been going on for about 2 months now, and I have tested both drivers.
With nouveau it dumps these boot errors, but works on other software just fine:
Oct 21 17:17:48 eagle kernel: nouveau E[ PBUS][0000:02:00.0] MMIO read of 0x00000008 FAULT at 0x10022c
Oct 21 17:17:48 eagle kernel: nouveau E[ PBUS][0000:02:00.0] MMIO read of 0x00000008 FAULT at 0x100230
Oct 21 17:17:48 eagle kernel: nouveau E[ PBUS][0000:02:00.0] MMIO read of 0x00000008 FAULT at 0x1002e4
I cannot use the nvidia driver in general because it sometimes causes graphics faults when using Chromium.
I don't get any other graphics issues other than with Stellarium (and obviously I cannot run google-earth with nouveau either).
Any ideas on where to start with this problem would be appreciated.

    Thanks for answering!
Following your advice, I downloaded and installed the latest driver from Nvidia (http://www.nvidia.fr/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-260.99-whql-driver-fr.html). I'm not sure this is the one I updated on the first place since I don't remember when I did it (it was a few months ago, and as I had internet without using wi-fi, I didn't see that much the BSOD, but now that I'm back to wi-fi, the problem occurs often). Until now, no BSOD, but the first problem "Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered" is still here, and a little bit more annoying since it can occurs while watching some video files (it didn't happen before).
For the BIOS problem, it was the one described on the link you gave, but no the problem is over. I was just thinking it could be relevant to understand the others problems.
I'll let you know if the BSOD is (or seems) definitively gone. In the meantime, if someone knows how to fix the problem of the display driver that stopped responding and was recovered, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is the latest 280.26 nvidia driver compatible with MacBook Pro 6,2 model?

Is the latest nvidia driver (280.26) compatible with MacBook Pro 6,2 model)? Boot Camp 4.0 comes with the 262.41 nvidia driver, but I'd like to upgrade to the latest 280.26. The official 280.26 driver page on the nvidia site says that GeForce GT 330M is compatible, but in the footnote is written this thing:
Notebooks supporting Hybrid Power technology with Intel chipsets are not supported by this release
Do you think this is the case of MacBook Pro 6,2 model? Can I upgrade the driver without any problem?
    P.S.
I've the nvidia geforce gt 330m 256 MB.

    Mac OS X 10.8.2.

  • Nvidia driver install with pacman available

    hi
you can find a nvidia package in tpowa repo
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/tur/tpowa
now it is possible to add /update remove nvidia drivers with pacman
at the moment it works with kernel 2.6.5
    not with the scsi kernel
    i'll try to fix that
please test it and give feedback
    thanks

hm if you update your kernel to 2.6.5-3
you have to update to gcc 3.4 too
the nvidia drivers have to be built with the same compiler that was used for the kernel
2.6.5-3 was built with gcc 3.4
--> nvidia driver has to be built with gcc 3.4
    upgrade both packages and do
reboot for the new kernel and then X will not start due of failing nvidia module, login as root and run:
    pacman -S nvidia
now you can start X and it should work :-)
    so it worked for me

  • [Solved] Switch from nvidia driver to nouveau - libgl is seg faulting

    Hello,
I recently tried to switch my desktop from using the proprietary nvidia driver to nouveua after having the proprietary driver crash randomly.
I followed the wiki page for this (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/nouveau) where I removed the nvidia driver packages and installed xf86-video-nouveau. I also regenerated the ramdisk image. After all of this I was unable to get xfce to load, although I can get X to successfully start running twm.
The problem seems to be because libGL.so.1 is causing many things segfault. (emacs, xfce4-session). For example, if I run emacs through gdb from the console, the backtrace is from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.
Any suggestions on things I can try to stop the seg faulting and get a usable system again?
    Thanks

  • Nvidia Driver conflict with 10.6.8?

I am having an Open GL issue that is very similar to the problems that were widely reported when CS5 and 10.6.4 came out except I am running 10.6.8 and CS 5.5. I'm also running a 2 x 2.6 Quad Core Xeon from late 2008 with 32GB of ram.
    Issue Here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3067743
Is anybody else having this? I'm going nuts and just lost a few days last week doing clean installs on a new system drive. I've heard general rumours that 10.6.8 is jacked...
The problem seems to be isolated to AE. I just did a multcam edit session in FCP for 30 hours this weekend and had no crashes. Opened up AE this morning and it happened right away.
I've updated to the newest Nvidia drivers. I went through all the general Open GL tweaks recommended by Adobe, still no go. I wasn't having this problem until I went to 10.6.8, though it was stable for a little while.
I either get the dreaded "Open Gl has caused a crash" message, or the system just locks up. I turn off Open GL, everything runs fine. I am just trying to use Open GL for preview, not for rendering.
    Anybody?

Just wanted to let people know, after extensive testing on both my part and Apple's tech team, I traced the problem back to corrupt font that was crashing RAM preview based stuff in both MAYA and After Effects! Crazy. It even passed Suitcase Fusion, not sure what happened, but when I swapped fonts, problem went away...Hopefully this will save somebody else some hair down the road.

  • New NVIDIA Driver issue with Premiere pro

    Laptop
    Windows 7 pro x64
    Intel Core i7 2.7ghz
    16 gig ram
    NVIDIA GTX675MX driver version 314.07 2013.2.18
Hello, I had to update the driver due to premiere stating I had an outdated driver.  After installation everything seemed fine however today when I opened premiere my source and preview windows showed black, no video.  My edits and source files were all still there.  Sound from my clips played but no video.  I have Mercury playback set to hardware.  When I switch it to software the video images return.  Has anyone else had an issue with this driver in Premiere pro and did you find a solution?  I did a search and this seems to be an issue with drivers.  Hope they fix it in the next update. Thanks.

Thank you everyone,  I just figured it out.  For some reason in my NVIDIA Control panel-Manage 3d settings-Global settings Preferred Graphics processor drop down was set to Auto-Select.  I switched it to the NVIDIA card and everything seems back to normal.  Phew!
Harm,  I used your system configuration guide to set up my system. That really helped take the confusion out of proper system configuration.  Thank you for writing that.

  • New nvidia driver problem with MOHAAs

I installed the latest driver from NVIDIA (v 66.93). Everything seemed ok.
When I run Medal of Honor Spearhead, the display flickers off and on. The current driver version I am using is 61.41 with no problems.
    My directx version is 9.0c.
My video card is MSI FX5600 TD128
Any ideas what causes this problem whilst running Mohhas ??
Obviously, I can use my current driver. But I would like to know what is causing the problem with the new driver.

    Nice catch KaptCrunch!
For anyone that does not have Adobe Acrobat installed:
    Quote
Medal of Honor Under Windows XP / Windows 2000
    Problem
The Electronic Arts game Medal of Honor uses a hard coded buffer to parse
the OpenGL extension string. This can cause a system crash under Windows
    XP and Windows 2000.
    Workaround
NVIDIA has implemented Medal of Honor application detection to work
    around this extension string crash.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • [SOLVED!] On USB drives, problems with non-English chars and HAL

    Hello,
I am having a problem with non-English caracters (áãàçéẽê...) on files stored on my USB drive.
On Windows they're created with the correct name. But on Linux the files have the non-English characteres replaced by '?' and are not accessible.
If I manuallly mount the drives using 'mount -o iocharset=utf8 /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk' the characters are OK, so I think I just need to get HAL to pass the correct parameters to mount. However I don't know how to do that, and haven't found any good solution.
I tried to build a custom kernel setting the default charset as UTF-8 and it didn't work.
Any ideas? I'm using x86-64, HAL 0.5.13-3 and my locale is pt-BR.UTF-8.
    Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, this is not a HAL problem, but a problem with 'exo'. For the solution, I edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/mount.rc and added iocharset=utf8 to the [vfat] category.

I don't use Thunar presently, but I looked in the Thunar Volume Manager doc and I didn't find anything to change the mount options of removable drives. I am not quite sure if it's possible or not. Maybe someone using it can tell for sure.
But if it is not possible to change the mount options, a possible solution is to disable the Thunar Volume Manager plugin and to use something else more configurable to manage the automount function.
Personally I use the halevt package from AUR which uses configuration files in the xml format.
It's not so easy to use but is highly configurable.
But there exists other tools also.
I can help you with halevt if you choose that way...

  • Has anyone got the B500 to work with Ubuntu? (nvidia driver problems)

In two weeks, I have been completely unable to get the nvidia driver working with the B500 on Linux. No matter what I try to do, the X server doesn't start, and my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file ends with "fatal server error: no screens found." I have tried feeding a custom modeline to xorg.conf, explicitly calling an EDID file which I extracted from the Windows installation, using the upstream nvidia driver installer, using the official repository driver, and probably a bunch of other stuff that I'm not recalling right now.
    Versions I've tried this on:
    Kubuntu 10.04, 32- and 64-bit
    Ubuntu 10.04, 32-bit
    Kubuntu 9.10, 32-and 64-bit
I am stumped. Has anyone successfully gotten this to work?
    best,
    -p.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Solved with the kind assistance of paulricardomc on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1477507
    Short version of the fix:
    1. Extract the edid from the Windows partition using softMCCS, saving as edid.bin
    2. Save the edid.bin file in /etc/X11 (or wherever you like)
    3. Include the following in the device section of your xorg.conf:
    "Option"  "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
    "Option" "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/edid.bin"

Hello all, I have just installed ArchLinux on a new Dell computer of mine.  It has a GeForce FX 5200 video with 128 MB of ram.  Arch installed and boots wonderfully, but the nvidia driver is giving me trouble.  My initial setup of xorg was wonderful.  I used Xorg -configure to have a xorg.conf file generated.  The only thing it couldn't detect was the mouse, which I took care of.  This config file used the "nv" driver which works well.  I then went further and installed the current nvidia driver package with pacman -Sy nvidia and it installed perfectly.  The module loads at boot time with no warnings or errors, and immediately after the module is loaded 2 nvidia nodes are created in the /dev directory ( I use udev ).  After I installed the nvidia driver I did used the command Xorg -configure to create another xorg.conf file and the new one was more advanced/complex and added the "nvidia" driver option as the driver automatically.  The problem I have is that when the xserver starts, the image quality is poor.  It appears as if I am running at 4 bit color ( 16 colors ).  Everything is grainy and poor quality, but the window managers and desktop environments load quickly and work flawlessly.  Also, it appears that 3D accleration/OpenGL is not working, because when try to run glxgears I get the error message
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Never mind.  I just hacked the hell out of the xorg.conf and finally got it to work.  Thank you all any way.

I would assume it had to do with some missing modules... dbe and glx

  • [SOLVED] Problem with nvidia driver install/uninstall

A while ago I installed the 177.70 driver from nvidia's site, then I was trying to install the 177.80 and to remove the .70 first, I tried
    sh NVIDIA-filename.177.70.run --uninstall
And the installer told me no nvidia driver was found. I haven't been able to install a newer driver since every time I tried X would give me a driver mismatch error on start-up. I am hesitant to manually remove any files, how would I fully get rid of 177.70 so I can install a newer one??
    TIA

See script for the command you should be running:
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.11-pkg1.run -a -q -s -N --no-opengl-headers
Assuming you're on 32-bit. To let Nvidia's installer sort out your mess.

  • [Solved] Starcraft 2 crashe with wine bunblebee nvidia driver

After the upgrade of yesterday (2013/05/12) my starcraft II (under wine) crashes.
After a downgrade of the nvidia driver ( and linux kernel ) my SCII is running once again perfectly, so I guess there is something wrong between the new nvidia driver (319.17-2) and the following package : bumblebee (3.2.1-1), wine (1.5.30-2) .
I'm a little buzzy actually and didn't take time to check deeply why, but if someone wants some data just ask
    humhumhum
Edit: the package bunmblebee has been updated and solves the problem. Thanks.

Do other GL programs work? e.g. glxgears. Is direct rendering enabled? (glxinfo | grep -i direct)
