[SOLVED] Just got my Arch! Can /home be moved to different partition?
Hello everybody, after three days of work I've finally got my Arch running correctly, and I'm very thrilled about moving on and use it on a regular basis.
Now I have a doubt: during installation I selected to install home in the same partition as file sistem, because I have a home partition for Ubuntu and Fedora and was unsure if setting it would simply create a new folder for Arch, or it would be automatically formatted, which would have meant the destuction of all my data. That means all Arch data is inside the same partition.
So, question is, is there any way to move to that home partition now?

I don't know how many times I have seen this problem - and the solution is oh so easy ...
Forget about /home as such - make it just part of the root filesystem and don't put any data in there.
Instead - mount /myhome (or whatever you want to call it) on a partition on its own and have all of your users (ie all the usernames you use) rwx-access to it - use it as your 'real' home.
This way, you don't have the clutter of dot-files/directories if you should have more than one distro. To use a common /home for more than one distro is a big fallacy (at least in _my_ eyes) unless you make sure that uid and gid is the same (which is seldom the case if you're a newbie - old hands know better!)
Even if you have the same uid/gid - the dot-files may not be completely compatible and you're heading for troubles.
Another advantage - you can replace a distro with some other distro without thinking twice about it - your 'real' home is safe.
Oh - and while I'm at it.
Why all the different partitions for each distro? (/var, /usr, /home etc). That is OK if you only use one distro - the second you try to install another one you will be heading for troubles.
Just use the root filesystem and give it 20 gigs - 20 gigs for each distro and you will not have any problems - ever (almost). Hey - in these days of terabyte disks for $50, what's the problem?
Then - a final /myhome as a common home partition for all distros.
Another 'mistake' I often see is playing around with different filesystems, trying to wring the last ounce of effort out of a poor diskdrive. Make a /testing partition and experiment to your heart's content with all kind of weird and wonderful filesystem, but keep the root filesystem and your /myhome safe. ext3 and/or reiserfs are excellent filesystems and have been so for years - they are as safe as the bank. ext4 is getting there.
Just my 2c worth ...

Just got iPhone 5, get home and find iCloud Outlook Add-in does not install under Windows XP. I am loathe to upgrade to Windows Vista/7/8 just yet. Can I obtain and use an earlier version of iCloud Outlook Add-in? My iPad II synchronizes!
There is no 'earlier' version that supports XP. iCloud launched with Vista/7 support only.

Just got touch. Can't see movies on Itunes
Hey I just got a new touch. It's awesome but I can't seem to download or even preview movies in Itunes (from the ipod itself). It lets me look for them, even select a movie. After than I see nothing other than a grey box that says 'Preview'. Nothing happens if I push this. I can move the screen up and down and read about the movie but nothing else. I see no way to download, watch or preview it.
Any thoughts?
ThanksHave you synced the Touch to the computer with your iTunes Account? While you were logged into it and you were Authorized?

Just got firefox yesterday, can load Adobe Flash Player, please help
Just got Firefox yesterday. This morn I tried to "Listen Live" or "Live Stream" from a radio station. It said I need to download Adobe Flash Player. It won't let me download it. Can you help please,
Thank YouThis may not be a Firefox problem as such. It may well be that you do not have administrative rights to install FlashPlayer, or for some reason security software is causing a problem. Exactly what do you mean by ''It won't let me download it.'' possibly any error or warning messages you get will be meaningful; what are they ?
See
* [[Managing the Flash plugin]]
Presumably you could use Internet Explorer, does that work with the radio stations ? <br/> note IR & Firefox are likely to need separate installs of flash Player, and certainly you will need to test each browser separately for flash Player functionality. -

[SOLVED] Just got back to my Arch machine - problems
So, after about a month of not having Internet access, I booted my Arch system today to update everything but of course, I have some problems that are keeping me from doing that. I have Gnome as my DE and when I boot up, I can log in just fine but when I get to the Desktop, I can't click on anything. The mouse moves just fine, the icons even change shade when I put the cursor over them like they can be clicked on but clicking on them does nothing. I have to launch everything with the keyboard, which isn't such a big deal but it's a bit of a nuisance.
The other thing that's bothering me is I have no internet access. I am behind a different router now with an IP of 192.168.1.1 (instead of 192.168.0.1) and I made the appropriate change in the ROUTE variable in rc.conf but it hasn't done anything. I even tried manually adding the default route to the routing table with
#route add -net default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0
but that doesn't seem to have done anything either. I have an IP address but I can't ping the router. Oh yeah, and network is listed as a daemon in rc.conf. This is, of course, keeping me from updating my system using pacman.
I may have other problems too but these are the two biggest that I need to get sorted out ASAP so your advice is appreciated. Here is my xorg.conf and a list of processes that are running after boot up.

I am behind a router and had to do only very minor tweaks to get it going: just enter the value of the gateway and remove the ! before gateway within the routes variable. Here is the (expanded) relevant part of my rc.conf, I hope it helps you:

# interfaces.
# Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES

[SOLVED] Network restart before Arch can access internet via IPCop?
The Leopard machines on our LAN have working internet on boot, my Arch box does not?
Even though I have the IPCop server's IP in the Arch /etc/resolv.conf.head file, I still have to do a sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart before I can use the internet.
Does anyone know how I can solve this one?
Thanks for your time.

As a workaround I've put /etc/rc.d/network start in my /etc/rc.local & now I don't have to type it manually.

[SOLVED] usb install of arch can't find internal hard disks
I installed arch to a 4gb usb flash drive and it works great. Keeping it bare bones for now without a GUI to force myself to learn more about linux and how it works. However, I would like to mount and access the internal hard drives of the "host" computer that i'm booting the usb on, and I can't seem to find them.
ls /dev/disk/by-anything only shows the usb device that arch is installed to and udev and something else I can't remember right now. Same results when I enter df -h.
I know that this is possible somehow, because I also have a live usb of Ubuntu 10.10 on another usb stick that can access the internal disks. However, my ubuntu stick also has a gui, Hal, etc and is a persistent live-disk-to-usb rather than an actual usb stick installation. Does that affect things?
I apologize if this is already covered somewhere. I am a super n00b with arch and I did my best to search both google and the forums.
Thank you in advance, and I look forward to being a part of the arch community!

i've looked through the kernel log, and realize that i've never looked at one before and don't really know what i'm looking for. if i haven't lost your interest yet, here's a pastebin of a recent boot... the PNY is the usb stick that arch is installed to. http://pastebin.com/D7nzkaaq
phaedrus wrote:If you do a "cat /proc/partitions" you can see what partitions the kernel is aware of at any time... if your drive is connected and not throwing a tantrum, it should appear in that list. If it's not showing up in the list, check the cables/connections, if it still doesn't show up... panic
i will do this next. i'm pretty sure that the cables are connected properly, seeing that i can boot the computers in question without the usb stick and have full access to available drives.
thank you everyone for all your responses so far!
EDIT: alright, i looked at /proc/partitions and this is what it says:
major minor #blocks name
8 0 3915776 sda
8 1 3915744 sda1
3 0 39070080 hda
3 1 4883728 hda1
3 2 1 hda2
3 5 473886 hda5
3 6 33350877 hda6
so it looks like my internal drive is recognized somehow. my new question would be, what exactly is the difference between /proc/partitions and /dev/disk/ ?? and how do i find out more identifying/location information about hda to mount it into an accessible location in my file system?

I have tried everything with resetting it etc etc. I don't have a problem with my ipad 3 or laptop, just getting the tracks onto the iPhone? Any help would be appreciated.
Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.

many fb apps will no longer post to my timeline, when I try to shop on-line and click to ad something to my order, nothing happens. I've tried allowing most scripts on a particular page, temporarily suspending adblock, etc., with no improvement. idk if it's a problem between firefox and win8 or one of the add ons...??
To see whether the extensions are the root of your troubles, try visiting Facebook in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled ''(Plugins like Flash will still work)''
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)

Just got my G5 - can't install my older version of Final Cut
Hi there - I have Final cut pro 2 and the version 3 upgrade. I'm trying to install on my G5 w/OSX but ran into a snag. First I found myself installing OS 9 from the OSX cd but now, when I try to start Final Cut Pro 2 (so I can register it and install my v.3 upgrade, I get the following message, "That application or control panel is not supported by Classic" (after Classic tries to launch).
Is it possible to get this installed on OSX?
Thx!
BillThe installer you referred to is not an actual 9.2 OS ... it's merely Classic. FCP (and many other intense apps) won't run in Classic; they require a full OS to operate.
Have you tried installing the FCP 3 upgrade? It will ask for the FCP 2 serial number but as I recall, an older version doesn't have to be on the system.

It can consists of 20 physical drives. So the LUN itself does not determine performance. Performance is determined by the moving parts underneath it.
Using multiple LUNs for the same diskgroup or file system volume is a common practice. Whether that would be a problem (performance or otherwise) depends on the stuff underneath the LUN.
For example one LUN could be RAID5 and another LUN can be RAID0+1. Mixing different RAID levels is not really a good idea.
One LUN can be storage on a SAN and accessed via fibre channel. Another LUN could be an iScsi device accessed via IP. Mixing very different storage architecture and storage protocols are not a good idea.
One LUN can be RAID0, running via dual fibre channels connected to a switch, for storage from storage server 1. Another LUN can also be RAID0 and accessed via the very same fibre channels and switch, but from storage server 2. In which case the RAID levels are the same and the storage protocol and infrastructure the same - and this will not only make a compatible mix, but can in fact increase redundancy if you use these as ASM mirror disks (meaning that ASM can loose either storage server 1 or 2 and still work). -
