[SOLVED] KVM and Qemu fail after installation

I tried installing Windows 7 and Vista with both Qemu and KVM.
Installation goes fine but after Windows reboots during the installation I only get a strange screen after the bios. It shows some random characters, as shown in the image. I tried varying the filesystem (raw, qcow and qcow) and the memory size, etc. but nothing works, not even the standalone kvm project. Any suggestions?
I used the following code to install the OS:
qemu-img create -f qcow2 windows7.img 20G
qemu -enable-kvm -boot d -m 1500 -hda windows7.img -cdrom win7.iso

I had the same problem. i have tried many things (even -vga std) but that screen always appear at reboot. because i really wanted to give w7 a try i have tested another windows 7 iso. VERDICT : IT WORKS PERFECTLY. so, just try with another iso.

SOLVED Key board and mouse fail after last update

Both my wireless keyboard and mouse failed after I updated yesterday. I'm using KNOPPIX to post they both work with knoppix so its not a hardware problem.

Just want to add that I had to edit grub at start up and add "single" at the end of the kernel line.
The reason is that switching to runlevel 3 didn't work for me.

After installation of Power Manager 1.43, the following errors were immediate shown at event viewer: COM+ Event System failed to fire the StartShell and Logon method on subscription {F6FE5592-FCBC-44AD-A836-D37F5085ED5B}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}. The subscriber returned HRESULT 80004001.
Please advice if this is a known issue? Thanks!

[SOLVED] startx and xinit fail on eeepc901 (possibly after upgrade)

Dear all,
Can't get X to start.
After a system upgrade (was a messy one, I'm pretty sure this is not a bug) I must have deleted some very important file for X. The fact is that it has stopped working, startx fails, xinit fail, even Xorg -configure fails. Please also note that I've changed the kernel (from zeneee to stock) but I had the same behavior with the previous kernel.
Possibly interesting outputs:
$xinit
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
$startx
xauth: creating new authority file /home/mgp/.serverauth.4397
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
It does create the authority file. Fails after that.

I've searched over for a solution but can't really find anything relevant. I've tried installing xorg a few times. Also hal and all that stuff but I don't trust myself too much on that. Hi all,
I fixed it. By looking closely at the strace I figured that for some reason X couldn't access my /tmp. I remember setting my /tmp directories in fstab to mount on tmpfs so I figured that wasn't working anymore. I removed my tmp entries in fstab (will have to refigure that one out). Something changed with the devices. Maybe I wasn't using udev before or something as it also has problems mounting devices it previously mounted on boot. However all this happened before I changed kernel. Dunno, anyway, it works although I have to fix a bunch of small things that still don't work. Lesson would be update often (hadn't done so in a year) and keep in touch with what is going on in the community (eee instructions have changed a lot -and become slightly more confusing-). [SOLVED] kvm vs qemu

Hello all,
I'm confused as to which I should be using. I am running arch 64, AMD processor with 6 cores.
I am trying to set up virtualization with KVM, and I am following the wiki here:

though I'm not sure what I should be installing/running.
I tried qemu, and when I go to install windows 7, the 64bit gives me a blue screen with error code upon booting the the VM to the windows 764bit cd. When I try the 32-bit version of windows 7, same command line used to launch qemu, the installer starts, but once I pick my language and click next, the installer stays at the "Starting Windows Setup" screen. It has stayed here for over 24 hours.
When talking with a guy from work, he suggested trying qemu-kvm, so over lunch I uninstalled qemu and installed qemu-kvm from the repos. when I execute:
modprobe kvm-amd
I get the following:
libkmod: kmod_module_parse_depline: ctx=0xb9d010 path=/lib/modules/3.2.6-2-ARCH/kernel/arch/x86/kvm/kvm.ko.gz error=No such file or directory
When I had qemu installed the modprobe line just returned with no error, so I'm assuming that is good.
Not sure how to get windows 7 installed. is this possible with KVM, or should I be using virtualbox/vmware? I don't need graphic acceleration, and the same co-worker mentioned kvm gives him better windows performance over virtualbox or vmware.
what info can I provide to the forums that will help solve this issue?
Any help installing win7 in kvm is much appreciated.

That's probably related to an update you made to your system (pacman -Syu) that included the kernel and by simply rebooting you'll get rid of that error message.

Kernel KVM and Qemu

Hi, I'm sure this is a daft question, but prior to the .20+.21 kernels, I was happily using the apt-packages qemu 0.9.0-1 and kqemu 1.3.0pre11-6. Now with a .21 kernel, I can load the kvm module in (which doesn't support the major=0 module options), but qemu fails to use it. What should I be doing to use qemu with the new kvm modules? sorry, I've read the wiki, but it seems out of date for these newer kernels ?

Hi, I've built kvm-17 (to which i had to manually add arch=x86_64) , and modprobed in kvm-intel, however the qemu-system_x86-64 binary seems to run images very slowly, and in /var/log/messsages I see a large number of ' rtc: lost some interrupts at 1024Hz.' statements.
Reading around the KVm/Qemu FAQs I see a comment about turning on 'CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y', I'm guessnig this is a kernel configuration propery??. is anyone else using KVM on 64?

Sapstart fails after installation of CPU-Patch April2009 on Oracle 10.2.0.4

Hi Experts,
after installing the CPU-Patch April2009 for Oracle 10.2.0.4, startsap fails with error code 12.
Starting everything manually works (lsnrctl start, sqlplus and do startup, after that startsap works).
When the listener and the database are running, things like R3trans -x also work without errors.
I found a SAP-Note 97953 but I don't know if this is the solution. Some of the oracle-executables in the bin-directory have been modified. So there is a "oracle" and a "oracle0" . The timestamp indicates to me that these files were modified while implementing the CPU-Patch.
I also checked SAP-Note 583861but with no success.

Installation of apps fails on Creative Cloud and still fails after retrying it

I can download any Adobe apps on "Creative Cloud". Every time I click on Try after %42 download the installation fails even after retrying it. Any idea what to do? I even reopend the creative cloud many times still same error.

In replacing a hard drive on a Mac book circa 2006, can you put too much hard drive space in and cause overheating? I've had 2 hard drives fail after installation in the past 3 weeks.

I recently had my Mac book circa 2006 updated to OS Lion and in the process was told I needed a new hard drive. I just replaced my original hard drive 9 months ago and was told at that time not to put too large a hard drive on my laptop or it could overheat. Now I have gone through 2 hard drives in the past 3 weeks since updating to Lion both of which were a terabyte in size. The authorized repair shop that put both failed hard drives in insists that the size of the hard drive does not cause problems in the Mac book but I am wondering why 2 failed in such a short time when the smaller hard drive lasted. It was working when I took it in for the updates but their diagnotic test showed that the first replacement HD was failing. I'm not sure what to think now.

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly

[SOLVED]Network Manager Applet and nmcli failing after GCC upgrade

Hi All,
So I went to update my system today and there were only like 8 or 9 updates. Like many other people I had an issue with gcc and pacman. To fix this I ran
pacman -S gcc
Then I ran:
pacman -Su
which updated pacman itself. On reboot though I noticed network manager applet was unable to find any of my network devices despite the fact that network manager was running and I had an IP address. I killed nm-applet and re-ran it and it spewed errors about not being able to connect to network manager. I tried running nmcli and it did the same thing. However, when I run nmcli as root it works. Looking at the arch wiki they suggest you be a part of the wheel and network group which I made sure I was. Everything was working up until I ran those two updates though. Anyone else have this happen or have any idea what is wrong?

EDIT: Never mind - a patch was released for consolekit which fixes the problem.

I have already tried removing the ! and the same thing happened ... but I realised today that I was being automatically connected to "Auto eth0" despite there being no cable present. When automatic connection was disabled on "Auto eth0" my 3G connection (ppp0) connected fine.
Could you clarify that the preferred set-up in the /etc/rc.conf for the interfaces is without the !. The Wiki for networkmanager says to disable them, but then states that some may need to be reenabled with no explanation. The purpose of this confuses me!

I appear to have fixed my problem with the auto connection on the various interfaces by updating my /etc/rc.conf file to:

Thus ensuring that I can connect in order of preference.

E4200 Bridged Mode - Wireless and Management fail after 36 hours

Greetings all,
I am trying to see if anybody else is having this problem. I have the E4200 and have it configured in bridged mode. Once configured, everything works great for 36 hours.
After 36 hours, all wireless devices are unable to pull an IP address and the management IP address of the E4200 stops responding. The only way to restore service is to reload the router.
I took the first one back to Best Buy and they gave me a new one, however the new router has the same issue.
It seems to me that after 36 hours, the E4200 fails to renew its management IP and also stops forwarding wireless broadcasts (DHCP) requests to my DHCP server.
Thoughts?

Thanks. The new E4200 firmware has "bridged mode" so basically I just have this thing acting as a Wireless access point that has 5 Gigabit ethernet ports.
This disables the routing engine in the E4200 and it acts as a wireless AP and switch. The E4200's WAN port then connects to a Gigabit switch located in my telco closet, which is connected to my FiOS Router.
Reason for this setup is so that devices connected to either the Gigabit switch, or to the E4200 via hardwire or wireless will all remain on the same subnet, and not cause the broadcasts to block as packets traverse subnets.

Can anyone help with this please? Sorry if it's a well known issue and I have just failed to find the solution, but I have searched for one.
I use yaourt -Syu regularly, and generally it's great.
BUT - every time linux-3.17...-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz is upgraded the system fails to reboot! Throwing something like:

After much struggling I have discovered a workaround, but I don't understand it - or like it. This is what I do:
1. Boot from an archiso image cd in UEFI mode
2. Mount the correct partitions on / /home and /boot
3. # arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
4. # cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
5. # pacman -U linux-3.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz (or whatever is the latest upgrade)
Then, when I exit and reboot all is well again.
I use the rEFInd boot manager to choose between ArchLinux and ,reluctantly, Windows 8.1 - I suspect that might have something to do with my problem but I don't know what.
If anyone can tell what I am doing wrong, please explain.

I think you've done it - thanks a lot.
I changed this line in my /etc/fstab :
UUID=0E51-F605 /boot/efi vfat ...
to
UUID=0E51-F605 /boot vfat ...
and I think that's done the trick.
I did pacman -U linux-3.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz again without booting from an archiso image cd in UEFI mode, which would previously have failed - and it didn't.
I look forward to the next actual upgrade of linux-3...
Thanks again, I can't remember how, or why, I went wrong in fstab but I won't do it again.

[SOLVED] KVM and Bridged Networking

I've got KVM working and a Windows 2008 server installed on a image now, but it's only getting a NAT ip address. I need to get this server onto my main network, on Windows I'd use Virtual Box and Bridged Networking, but I thought I'd give KVM a try out.

Bridged networking is used when you want your VM to be on the same network as your host machine. This will allow it to get a static or DHCP IP address on your network, and then you can access it using that IP address from anywhere on your LAN. The preferred method for setting up bridged networking for KVM is to use the netcfg package. You will also need to install bridge-utils.

I've got "bridge" added to my rc.conf as a MODULE which is loaded. (I saw reference to this somewhere else on the forum that this might be needed)
I'm starting my VM with the following command
qemu-kvm -vnc 192.168.1.52:0 -hda Nekomi -m 2048 -smp 2 -net nic
Yet I still can't get an IP outside of the 10.0.0.0 range on the VM.
The VNC line above is because the HOST has not VGA output at all, completely headless.
I'm trying to get this working and trying to learn at the same time. KVM is new to me, as is bridged networking on linux.

Anyway, I managed to get this working with steps #1-#7 from the linked section. Thanks for that. I did have a few minor issues in getting a DHCP on the host machine itself, turns out I'd missed a single ) from the daemons section of rc.conf. A human error, but difficult to fix as the machine was rendered off the network and without a VGA card... fun!
I diverge, I have this script to bring up a bridge when the qemu-kvm starts

I'm new here, and with Arch, could you explain me how to fix it? I tried the solution given in the link above, several times but with each time i have errors and warnings from the post 1 in mentioned topic. I installed my Arch from usb thumb drive. Maybe this is something to do with it? Also, my hard drive that Arch is installed on is being connected to a "raid card" named Adaptec, but during installation my disk is being found so i think that drivers is present and works ok, so it is not related to this, also there is no raid present, i use it only as a mean to connect to motherboard because there is not enough sata port, and because:

he wrote that this error is also on virtualbox, so it is not my fault and Adaptec related issue.

I had the exact same problem as you, but I was able to fix it by replacing the bad grub.cfg file with the grub.conf file found in the same directory. If you try this do not forget to back up your original file (just in-case smile)
because i don't know much about it, don't want to destroy data on my hard disks or to destroy my other distros (i use Ubuntu with derrativates such as Mint, Kubntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and Slackware 13.37 and 14.00).
If you could explain it in details i would be really happy.

It is wrong, the root partition is different than in this, we can see that this grub leads to wrong root partition, i posted my root partition at the bottom from /etc/fstab. I don't know how to fix it - i'm not familiar with the dos names (hd 0,5 and so on).

Help concerning grup and lvm partitions after installation

Hello, I just recently installed arch-linux according to this installation guide:

Therefore I decided to use the following partitions:
/dev/sda1 -> 1GB EFI boot
/dev/sda2 -> swap
/dev/sda3 -> split up to 2 partitions via lvm for /boot/ and /home as described in the guide.
then I installed the UEFI grup without any errors and after reboot it did not work:
I got the following errors:
hwdb.bin does not exist, please run udevadm hwdb --update
ERROR: device 'UUID=...' not found
ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID=...'
and an emergency shell appeared..
Well first I thought of my fstab, but all partitions are mentioned there correctly.
Then I looked the errors up in the internet and tried to reinstall mkinitcpio as well as a reuse of: mkinitcpio -p linux
Nothing happened, still the same.
I only followed the steps mentioned in the installation guide and before reboot everything looked pretty good.
Does grub maybe interfier with lvm ?
In a nutshell, I have no single clue why it does not work, so hopefully one of you knows why

Hello there,
1. You have a UEFI system. As such, the UEFI partition (/dev/sda1) serves as your boot partition (e.g. mounted at /boot or /boot/efi). You don't need to create another one on top of that! That would be a big part of your problem.
2. Your extra /boot partition is also LVM, which UEFI cannot handle. For UEFI systems, there must therefore be a seperate boot partition, and it CANNOT be LVM. Root, Home, and Swap are fine, but not the UEFI (i.e. /boot) partition.
3. Even if it were a BIOS system, you also need to manually edit the grub configuration file to sucessfully boot where /boot is LVM.
