[SOLVED] linux-grsec does not mount rootfs (was: typo)

Hello,
I have an issue with linux-grsec from community, which does correctly detect my cryptsetup root container but after unlocking will not mount it, and thus not boot.
Here is my setup:
mkinitcpio.conf
MODULES="i915 crc32c-intel"
BINARIES=""
FILES=""
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block encrypt filesystems keyboard fsck"
COMPRESSION="xz"
syslinux.cfg (normal + grsec options)
LABEL arch
MENU LABEL Arch Linux
LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
APPEND root=/dev/mapper/crypto-root cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:crypto-root rw acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
LABEL archgrsec
MENU LABEL Arch Linux (grsecurity)
LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux-grsec
APPEND root=/dev/mapper/crpyto-root cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:crypto-root rw acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" nopcid pax_softmode=1
INITRD ../initramfs-linux-grsec.img
I have two images from the boot process, to clarify where I'm stuck at.

http://i.imgur.com/xTCaQj5.jpg
I can mount /dev/mapper/crypto-root and access my rootfs from that console manually.
What to do to fix this?

There does not seem anything meaningful for me in the topic you linked. I'm using syslinux not grub/gummiboot, and I don't use EFI/SecureBoot. I used the search function but it is pretty scarce when it comes to the grsecurity patched kernel.
Everything works fine with the standard kernel. It is just linux-grsec that does not mount my rootfs.

Hi guys, I've just reinstalled Arch and I was setting it up, and then I installed the Linux-Ck kernel and, I've passed the passod an parrameter to kernel to use bfq as the scheuluder but when it boots It yells that It cannot find the bfq scheuduler. And YES I booted using the Linux-ck.
I can't understand why this is happening. Can someone help?

That's because the newest linux-ck doesn't include the bfq scheduler, simply because bfq isn't available yet for linux 3.2. You'll have to wait a little, it will go into the package as soon as it's available.

Finally found the problem was the Ipod itself. After a soft reset everything worked again.

  • Ipod (3rd gen.) does not mount to iTunes

My ipod (3rd gen.) does not mount on iTunes (using a Mac).  When plugged in, it appears on my desktop as if it were a jump drive.
I was planning on re-formatting it with Disk Utility but I'm not sure if this is a good idea.  I also realised that the Format is listed as Windows NT File System (NTFS) when I have the disk utility window open.  If I need to format with Disk Utility, what format option should i choose? (i.e. Mac OS Exteneded (Journaled), Mac OS Extended etc.)
    Thanks in advance!!!

Now when I connect the Ipod to my Mac, it mounts as a Device on iTunes.  I want to sync only a few items from my library onto this iPod - when I attempt to do this (by either adding the specific music to the "music" section on the iPod or creating a playlist and using Autofill to fill the iPod), the iPod says that it has Synced but when I disconnect the iPod, there is no music on it.  Why?

  • Home DVD goes in, spins, does not mount, and then ejects. It does play on an old Windows PC.

Hi. I have a MacBook and I am able to play purchased DVDs just fine. However when I try to play the home DVDs my brother burned for me on his new MacBook Pro it doesn't work. The DVD goes in, spins, does not mount, and then ejects. It plays on an old Windows PC though. Very strange. Help!

I know your frustration, so happy I still own a PC just so I can burn any DVD I might still need!
I was told at the Apple store to go buy an external l0l
How awesome is THAT ...Yah you just paid an INSANE amount of cash for a CRAP laptop so now go out and spend MORE money on getting an external DVD burner so your expensive laptop can burn/play DVD's
YAY APPLE... wtg at putting out a quality product!
PS so fantastic to see all the responses to your cry for HELP here!

  • Ipod does not mount onto Mac OSX

My click wheel Ipod does not mount to my desktop nor to my Itunes. I tried resetting it but I cannot restore it because it does not mount. I also cannot open up the Ipod Update software file, it tries to open with Appleworks, then stops.

I have fixed my iPod blank/black screen problem (i suspect black screen for iPod5G black model, and white screen for the white model) On Black Friday, which was yesterday, after I upgraded the newest releases on QT/iTunes602/osx1044/iPod11, iPod didnt do anything, no mounting to my iBook/iMac/G5PwrMac. Hard reset didnt work, etc.
I decided to fix the iMac permission with local drive DiskUtility, then reboot the iMac with the Original Tiger iMac DVD software restor disc which comes with the desktop then repair the volume with this method. Then I reboot and then I did an extended hardware test with the same disc, but with the Hardware test disk (which is the same as software restore DVD, iinstead of holding down the c key, hold down the option key when reboot with the disc)
After all that, iMac restarted and recognize my 5G iPod 60GB, I quickly restore the whole iPod to manufacture setting, hopefully you have all the info backed up somewhere, I did a clean defractmentation, and then used the iPodUpdater from 11-17-2005 to restore the iPod 1.0 version.
Now I am done and my iPod works like new. Go try it guys... Good luck!

  • Iomega prestige does not mount with osx 10.7

Iomega prestige does not mount with osx 10.7.  I can see the drive under 'about this mac' under storage USB but it does not mount on the desktop or in disk untilities.  It does run, the light is on, and I can feel the disk spinning.  I have tried PRAM and NVRAM with no luck.  Any ideas?

Is the disk designed for 10.7.5, or maybe an older OSX? At this point we are both trouble shooting in the dark.  Maybe you might want to return the the drive and get something that you know was built for your machine.  This does not make sense to me.  Maybe one of the mega dot guys on this site can chime in and offer some info.  Sorry I could not offer any more info.

Check to see if your USB Drive has the latest firmware. Leopard tends not to support older firmware.

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..
thanks a lot for having read this long post..

    IbookG4 1.2 & IMac G4 700   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.

  • My external HD does not mount despite it appears on Disk Utility

I have been using an external HD to keep my video library. Just this week I updated my library and everything was OK, but when I tried to see the videos on my mediaplayer the disk didn't appear. I connected it again to my iMac but now the external HD does not mount. I tried Disk Utility, the disk appear gray on the sidebar but it doesn't mount. I run Repair but I get the b-tree node size error and the disk still does not mount.
    Please help!!!!

If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...

  • Our XServe-RAID volume does not mount anymore...

Our XServe-RAID volume does not mount anymore.
On /var/log/system.log I could find the following.
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: jnl: open: journal magic is bad (0xf433f != 0x4a4e4c78)
Feb 22 09:52:29 ogre kernel: hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0).
It appears the the journaling is badly screwed.
I tryed to disable the journaling with no success.
    Here is what I get.
    ogre:/var/log root# diskutil disablejournal disk2s3
The selected journaling request does not appear to be valid
After some googling I foud this :
    --- QUOTE ---
The more serious problem occurs when the contents of the journal file are corrupted in such a way that the operating system does not proceed to mount the volume. Fortunately, this problem is extremely rare (I have seen three reports of corrupted journal files at the MacFixIt Forums and Apple Discussion Forums since journaling was introduced).
Starting the journaling process is one of the first things that happens when a volume is recognized by the operating system. There appears to be no way to intervene in single-user mode before the journal file is examined. A message about bad journal magic appears. Unfortunately, every tool that can turn off journaling requires that the volume already be mounted.
If the Macintosh can boot under Mac OS 9, dealing with a corrupted journal file involves restarting under Mac OS 9 and using a utility (such as our free TechTool Lite 3.0.4) to make visible these two invisible files at the root level of the volume:
    /.journal
    /.journalinfoblock
Once these files are made visible, they can be deleted. Mac OS 9 does not support journaling, and recognizes nothing special about these files. Neither of these files can be seen in Terminal or in single-user mode in Mac OS X, because they are considered part of the disk directory.
If the Macintosh cannot boot under Mac OS 9, but the drive has Mac OS 9 drivers installed, the drive can be put into a Macintosh that can boot under Mac OS 9, or an ATA/IDE drive can be put into a suitable FireWire enclosure.
The possibility that you may need to remove these two journaling files under Mac OS 9 is a good reason for making sure that all volumes you use have Mac OS 9 drivers installed. The drivers must be installed when the drive is formatted.

  • XServe RAID volume does not mount

Without any modification to the system, a panic log from our XServe indicates:
    "Thu Jan 18 17:28:58 2007
    panic(cpu 0): HFS: corrupt VH on PBSRaid1, sig 0x4100, ver 0, blksize 0"
The volume PBSRaid1 does not mount anyway from that date.
    Diskutil reports:
    "Verifying volume “disk2s3”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
The volume PBSRaid1 needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed."
DiskUtil is unable to repair the volume.
    My configuration is:
    XServe bi-G3 1GHz, MacOSX Server 10.3.9
XServe RAID with 5 disks RAID5 on the left side (OK) and 4 disks RAID5 on the right side (the bad volume)
All the controls are "green" and nothing wrong appeared in the events log obtained via RAID ADmin.
Any suggestion to repair are welcome, as we have many data from confocal microscopy on that volume.
    Thanks

    Right, Dave.
DW 4 rebuilt a preview folder which contains all the files in correctly named folders.Only 3 files among thousands has been saved in a Rescue folder !
It also restored the right volume label, lost in DiskUtil, fsck, pdisk and others.
    Very nice tool.
While DW was building its preview, the disk 9 lighted red and a lot of failures of the controler 2 appear in the events log of the XServe RAID.
At this time, the RAID is rebuilding with our spare disk.
I think we have to change both the disk 9 and the controler 2 despite it lights green currently.

  • Since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion, when I login 1 of 2 disk images I have set to open on login does not mount.

Since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion, when I login 1 of 2 disk images I have set to open on login does not mount. It worked under Lion. Stickies opens just fine. The disk images are sparse disk bundles. Are there any suggested remedies? I have already tried repairing permissions. One interesting thing is that previously in LIon, the disk images were just sparse images, not sparse bundles. I switched to bundles after reading that Time Machine backups of sparse bundles would not copy the entire image, only the changed parts. The sprase images are for sharing of photo and iTUnes libraries among multiple family member on the same computer.

If it is working as expected, what do you need with the old backup?
If you want to be able to go back to where you were prior to an upgrade, isolate that backup and don't use it again. As far as Time Machine can tell, the whole drive changed.
The link I posted contains probably everything that anybody knows about Time Machine and how to manipulate it to work as you would like as opposed to how it was designed to work. There are FAQs to continue a backup as opposed to starting fresh, but I wouldn't recommend it for the reasons above. Pondini probably doesn't, either.
If you are going to do a wholesale upgrade of the OS, I would create a bootable clone using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. A bootable clone on an external drive can have you back up and running instantly if the upgrade fails in any way. If the upgrade goes fine, store it away in case you find the current system isn't to your liking.
