[Solved :( ] md5 space optimization of isos

tl;dr - I have a 3.1 GB iso that contains 3.5 GB of data.  I need to figure out how to reproduce this so I can make a modified iso that's still only 3.1 GB.
I have an iso image for a program, and I want to make some changes to the image.  I've done this many times with other similar isos, no problem.  However, when I mount this particular iso, the size of the mounted directory is larger than the iso.  This 'expansion' carries on all the way to the new iso.  Even if I simply make a new iso from the original iso mount dir, the new iso is larger than the original:
$ du ARC_r16.iso
3113520 ARC_r16.iso
$ mount -o loop ARC_r16.iso /mnt/iso0
$ df /mnt/iso0
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/loop0 3113518 3113518 0 100% /mnt/iso0
$ du -s /mnt/iso0
3563518 /mnt/iso0
$ genisoimage -r -J -l -D -o /mnt/bucket/test.iso -V test /mnt/iso0/
$ du /mnt/bucket/test.iso
3568576 /mnt/bucket/test.iso
$ mount /mnt/bucket/test.iso /mnt/iso1
$ df /mnt/iso1
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/loop1 3568574 3568574 0 100% /mnt/iso1
$ du -h /mnt/iso1
3563832 /mnt/iso1
So I need to figure out what features account for the size issue, and how I can apply them when I create a new iso.

Tried that too; essentially the same outcome.  The copied folder was a bit larger IIRC (block size?) but I didn't compare the resulting iso precisely.  I just remember they were of similar size.
I expect it has to do with some sort of symlinking (see for example this).  But like that poster, I was unable to find the proper terminology.  I've yet to comb through the manpages.  Might just go with Imgburn as suggested in that link though.

    The kernel is reporting a BIOS bug (in the DSDT table). Many BIOS tables say nonsense things like two pieces of hardware being addressable at the same location of memory.  Most likely it's been that way all along, but over time the kernel devs check for more of these things, thus new error messages come out.
    If all of your hardware still works, then you can ignore it. Otherwise, you can try upgrading BIOS firmware in the hope that a newer version doesn't have the bug. (Or you can correct the table yourself and get the kernel to use the corrected copy from disk instead of the one in firmware, but I've found that to be very hard to accomplish.)

    I met some problem after a system update.
    My wii-remote doesn't work well when i try to reconnect it with xbmc-wiiremote.
    It will keep writing some error message to /var/log/xbmc-wiiremote.log until the disk get full (file size >9GB ).

    If the log file is still in use, it doesn't get physically deleted until the last program using it, closes it.  Using "truncate" instead of "rm" should work to free some space.

  • [SOLVED] Remastering official install live iso - how to create initrd?

    The wiki entry about Remastering the Install ISO does not mention how to generate a custom initrd with mkinitcpio for the live cd.
    Update: Thanks to djgera's answer i have been able to make it work:
    Environment:
    mkdir -p ~/arch/{iso,custom}
    sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop ~/archlinux-2013.07.01-dual.iso ~/arch/iso
    cp -av ~/arch/iso/* ~/arch/custom && sync && sudo umount ~/arch/iso
    unsquashfs -d ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/root-image.fs.sfs
    Mount:
    mkdir ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt
    sudo mount ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/root-image.fs ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt
    sudo mount -vB /dev ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/dev
    sudo mount -vB /sys ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/sys
    sudo mount -vt proc none ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/proc
    Copied kernel to environment:
    cp ~/arch/custom/arch/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/boot/vmlinuz-linux
    Chroot:
    sudo chroot ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt /bin/bash
    # make changes to the live system
    export LC_ALL='en_US.UTF-8'
    locale-gen
    mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio-archiso.conf -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -g /boot/archiso.img
    rm /boot/vmlinuz-linux
    exit
    Moved new initrd out of environment:
    mv ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/boot/archiso.img ~/arch/custom/arch/boot/x86_64/archiso.img
    Unmount:
    sudo umount ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt/{dev,sys,proc}
    sudo umount ~/arch/custom/arch/x86_64/squashfs-root/mnt

    Hello
    Run inside chroot:
    mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio-archiso.conf -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -g /boot/archiso.img
    But doing these steps are too much complex, do not remaster (also such wiki is outdated). Just create a new customized one using archiso::releng profile.
    pacman -S archiso
    cd /tmp # or any other working directory with at least 3G free
    cp -r /usr/share/archiso/configs/releng .
    cd releng
    # cutomize what you want here (look on root-image/ directory and build.sh to see how things works)
    # sed 's/i686//' build.sh Do this if you not want also i686 on final iso.
    ./build.sh
    I suggest to build a new one without any cuztomizations to see how things works, next start to cuztomize it.

    Also, some space gets reserved for root (five percent on /Ext[2-4]/).
    For /Ext[2-4]/ you can change that with $(tune2fs -m $PERCENTAGE).

  • Disk Utility verify of ISO burn fails, but md5 sum matches

    Frequently when I burn a large DVD iso to a DVD, via the "Burn" task in OS X Disk Utility, the process results in a failure at the end of the verify process.  However, if I check the md5 sum of the DVD against the published md5 sum for the ISO, the checksum matches.  From this I assume that the DVD must have written correctly.  Why does DiskUtility report that the verify failed?
    System:  IMac 27-inch, Mid 2011
    OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
    Disk Utility:  Version 13 (517)
    Example:  Here's the md5 sum of the downloaded ISO, which matches the published me5 sum for the ISO on the Centos website, and of the written DVD.
         # get md5 of downloaded ISO:
    $ md5 CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso
    MD5 (CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso) = 83221db52687c7b857e65bfe60787838
         # Centos site reports:  83221db52687c7b857e65bfe60787838 CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso
         # read DVD via dd and pipe to md5 to get md5 sum:
    $ dd  if=/dev/disk2 | md5

    8726528+0 records out
    4467982336 bytes transferred in 63.966136 secs (69849183 bytes/sec)
    83221db52687c7b857e65bfe60787838
    DVD was written via DiskUtility:
         1.  File | Open ->select ISO from downloads folder
         2.  Select ISO in left panel of Disk Utility
         3.  insert blank DVD
         4.  click Burn icon (pops up Burn Disc in: SuperDrive.  Ready to burn.)
         5.  click Burn
    Result:

  • E72 - PLEASE solve these bugs!

    Hi, i am using the E72 in Asia.
    A few things that i discovered and its bad! Comparing to E71, E72 is very bad. By the way, this is the second E72 i am using. I bought one before, same issue, now the secound one, Same ISSUE again!
    Here are the problems: I need to type in Chinese (pinyin) but whenever the language is switched to Chinese input, the calculator does not allow me to input decimal (how bad this is!).
    Also in Chinese mode, once back to English input, the SPACE bar input is NOT WORKING. The only way is to restart the damm phone. Can someone from Nokia tell me a fix on these problems? Please write me..

    @yangwwt1971,
    Update to firmware 023.002 will solve the space bar issue when changing input method between English and Chinese.  However, the decimal point in Chinese writing input for calculator is not fixed yet.  The decimal works in English writing input, though.  At least 1 bug is fixed   Try to update the firmware using NSU.

  • Moving from iPhoto to Aperture with limited drive space

    My biggest concern is the lack of space on my MacBook Air.
    I have already purchased and download Aperture.
    In the Import window I see the "move files" radiobutton and the "copy files" radiobutton under the "Store Files:" dropdown,  but they are disabled.
    As I understand if I just import my IPhoto Library, it will duplicate the files into the Aperture Library, and that wont work since my current library (iPhoto) is way bigger than my freespace in disk.
    Buying external drive is not an option now since I im saving to buy a NAS that will solve my space problems in the near future.
    What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
    Can someone help me with this? Im really looking forward to use Aperture....

    Hello Richieto,
    I have already purchased and download Aperture.
    In the Import window I see the "move files" radiobutton and the "copy files" radiobutton under the "Store Files:" dropdown,  but they are disabled.What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
    Set the "storeFiles" selector to "in their current location".
    Have you seen this support article. Moving from iPhoto to Aperture - How to move http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/how.html
    If you follow these instructions, you will import your iPhoto Library by referencing - that means, all images remain in your iPhoto library; your iPhoto Library will remain unchanged, but Aperture references the files in in the iPhoto Library. This will save disk space; your images will be stored only once: Set the "Store Files" selector to "in their current location".
    If you decide to do it this way, make sure you have a working backup of your iPhoto library. Also remember at all times that your master image files now are managed independently by two applications, that do know nothing of what the other app does and are not synchronized. So you must not move the iPhoto library, and you must not delete any images that are shared by both applications. Other than that this way to import from iPhoto will be the best deal, if you need to be frugal with disk space.
    What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
    Once you are happy with  the way Aperture handles the images you can copy your iPhoto library to a backup location and consolidate the master image files (File -> consolidate) by moving them from your iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library. This will delete them from iPhoto and store them inside the Aperture Library package. Then delete the iPhoto Library after testing that the consolidation was successful.
    I im saving to buy a NAS that will solve my space problems in the near future.
    Just a caution - you should not use the NAS to store the Aperture library - an Aperture library needs to bestored on a local volume formatted MacOS X extended.

    Hi All,
    I have a customer requirement here where customer would like to determine the vehicle space before loading the goods into the truck. • Simple patch for makepkg: Optimize PNG/JPEG images losslessly

    Hello there! I've written a (rather simple) patch for Makepkg that makes use of the tools jpegoptim and optipng, using more or less the same method that the current code for using UPX works.
    These two utilities use a handful of methods for producing more efficiently optimized image files, while not losing or altering the image given by decompression.

    < packaging_options=('strip' 'docs' 'libtool' 'emptydirs' 'zipman' 'purge' 'upx')

    > if ! type -p jpegoptim >/dev/null; then

    Save as makepkg.patch, patch /usr/bin/makepkg makepkg.patch, then add 'img' to your OPTIONS in /etc/makepkg.conf.
    On most files this gives a 5-10% space optimization, but with smaller files or files which were badly compressed in the first place it can get 30-50%.
    Obviously some things could be more elegant, there's no method given here to pass options to either program, but implementing that would be trivial.
    Anyone interested?

    You should ask about this on the [pacman-dev] mailing list.  It is nice that you are sharing it here.  But if you really think this is a superior way of handling it, then submitting it upstream for review is probably the better thing to do.

  • HT3224 Migration created a new user account on my new MacBook, increasing the space used. Any solution?

    I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro. Using the migration assistant, I transfered my old backed up (using the Time Machine) things to the new MacBook Pro. It  created another user account with the old Administrator ID. This about doubled the space usage on my machine and sort of slowed down the machine. There are no Apple Stores in my area and the machine was brought from the UK. So how do I solve the space problem?

    Thanks Neil. What I did before asking the question was simslar to what you suggested. I logged in with the new account, went to the Users&Groups pane, clicked on the other sccount and asked to delete. Which it did. With the older MacBook Pro and under Disk Utilities the space used was about 160 GB. With the new MacBook Pro and after the delete, the Disk Utility is giving me used space as 322.22GB (a difference of 150 GB all things considered). That I think was a substacial increase and I want to figure out why. May be I did something wrong?
    Your help is very much appreciated.

  • ISO and DVD drive problems under Mavericks

    Since I upgraded my Macbook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) from Lion to Mavericks I have had problems with ISOs and my DVD drive.
    If I download this ISO image for Ubuntu 12.04:
    http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/releases.ubuntu.com/releases//precise/ubuntu-12.04. 4-desktop-i386.iso
    The md5 checksum of the ISO and it is correct: 14ad92270218a8925d802b3d3b6e140f according to the list at:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes#A12.04_LTS
    If I try to mount it, Mavericks reports that there are no mountable file systems.
    If I write this to a DVD using Disc Utility and then try to mount the physical disc, Mavericks reports that the disc is unreadable and offers to eject it.
    If I run Virtualbox and attach the image to the virtual CD drive device, it boots and installs fine.
    Does anyone have any idea what is going on here with Mavericks?
    What is Mavericks doing differently?

    ok this just got ultra wierd. i tried running the comp with just one optical drive and my monitor stopped detecting a signal.so i plugged the second drive back in and it started working again. i tried this several times. then i tried running the comp with no optical drives and it worked fine. so it works with 2 or none lol. what a crazy system. i beginning to think this system is hopeless. i have replaced the mobo, and the PSU just to get the graphics card working properly. but now my dvd drive is acting up. grrr.

  • Recovery disk killing CPU?

    Hello. I have a HP ENVY 17-j130ea.
    When I first got it, the first thing I done was create recovery disks for it to put in the box so if I need to recover it, I had the discs to do so.
    Anyway, before completely setting it up I decided to run the recovery and do a minimalist recovery so it would only have the OS and the basic drivers, no software, bloatware or anything.
    So I put the first disc in and restarted the laptop, the screen flashed and then turned off. The light on the caps lock would then flash once every 5-6 seconds. Looking at the HP support, apparently this is a problem with the CPU.
    I took the laptop back to PC world today and got it swapped for a new one. I got this new one home, created the recovery discs, put the first one in and the exact same happened again, a quick flash on the screen and the caps lock button flashing once every 5-6 seconds.
    So I now have two recovery disc sets, I made a image of each disc and ran a md5 checksum on the ISOs and they appear to match. So both laptops have generated identical recovery discs, they both verified the discs for errors and they both have killed the laptops.
    So I'm going to take this laptop back again and get it swapped for a new one. But I'm going to have to wait a week for them to get a new one in.
    Now I think its a pretty big problem if the recovery discs are killing the systems.
    And how can I get a set of recovery discs which I can be sure are not going to kill the system as soon as I insert them into the laptop?
    EDIT: I have made a video showing the problem http://youtu.be/-yEjdQ9ccgk

  • Unable to install ISE 1.1.1 on VMware vSphere 5

    Dear friends,
    I'm trying to install ISE 1.1.1 VM on my vSphere 5 environment but I get no success.  I met hardware requirements (2 CPUs, 4 GB of RAM, 100 GB disk and 1 NIC), but I'm always stuck on the attached print screen (traceback and invalid ELF header of an anaconda file.
    I googled some times, but I found nothing.  What should I do to solve this?
    Thank you!

    Mauricio,
    Can you compare the md5 hash of the iso that you downloaded? Or try to download the file again and see if that fixes your issue.
    The correct md5 hash displays when you hover over the iso link, the correct hash is - ecf89ebbd50a1e77e029d35f8ae93ce9
    Thanks,
    Tarik Admani
