[SOLVED] mkinicpio's systemd hook, LUKS, LVM and resume

I had a working LUKS/LVM/resume using the following HOOKS and kernel parameters:
# /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keymap encrypt lvm2 btrfs resume filesystems keyboard"
# /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf

Since systemd 217 is supposed to support hiberation, I am trying to setup a pure systemd initrd image. So I changed my mkinitcpio.conf and arch.conf files to the following:

The change in boot entry is done as suggested in this topic, since using cryptodevice doesn't seem to work. I only changed the resume/root to UUID since this seems to be the right way to do things (UUID is not supposed to change, while labels may change).
And the system boots, but resume doesn't work (tried to run "systemctl hibernate" from terminal, the system hibernates but never resumes). I removed the resume hook since it doesn't seem to be necessary with systemd hook. Even if I put it again it doesn't work (it tries to run the resume hook, I can see the logs during the boot, but nothing changes). I think this is a problem in the root entry or resume entry in my boot parameters (maybe both), probably I need to change for some other think but I didn't find anything searching in Google.
Maybe someone with a Fedora setup may help? The suggestion to use rd.luks.uuid instead of cryptsetup seems to come from there.

I know this may seem like I am reviving an old topic, but recently I bought a SSD and tried to replicate my setup, including supporting for TRIM. While it's easy to do it's not something trivial since it's not really well docummented.
You will need three things:
A filesystem that supports discard (I am using XFS).
In /etc/lvm/lvm.conf, enable issue_discards option.
Lastly, add rd.luks.options=discard in your kernel boot options
To test if everything is working as it should, just do:
# fstrim /
And if everything is working it should return 0, or a error message in case of error.

    I successfully installed Archlinux on my first computer, using LVM on two internal Hard Drives.
    I'm trying to do exactly the same on my second computer, but I got a problem: the LVM volume is not found at boot, so that the root partition can't be mounted and the boot fails.
    The only difference is that, on my second computer, the second hard drive is connected through USB.
    Some hints: my second computer boots perfectly with LVM and Ubuntu. Archlinux needs to be configured adequately.
    I tried to add rootdelay=30 in menu.lst, but it changes nothing. Of course, in /etc/rc.conf I have USELVM="yes" and in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf I have HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata keymap lvm2 filesystems"

    I finally solved my problem!
    In the file /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, I modified the MODULES loaded:
    MODULES="pata_acpi ata_generic ata_piix usbcore usb_storage uhci_hcd ehci_hcd sg scsi_mod sd_mod dm_mod"
    I also add in the file /lib/initcpio/hooks/lvm2 the line /bin/sleep 10
    /bin/sleep 10
    msg "Scanning logical volumes..."
    And finally, I ran the command:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26

    Hiya. The Wiki isn't really clear about this. There are some instructions about building a systemd based init image here, but nothing about fsck.
    On the silent boot page there is a entry about fsck , more specifically letting systemd check the filesystem instead of the fsck hook, which involves copying configuration files.
    I understand both entries, but after migrating my init image to systemd, I keep getting systemd-fsck messages on boot, and now I have a couple of questions:
    Is my disk being fscked twice?
    Is the fsck hook needed anymore? What would happen if I remove it?
    If I want to turn off the output, can I follow the instructions on the Wiki?
    What is the general recommended approach with systemd and fsck?
    I skimmed through this thread, but I must say I didn't become any more educated on this topic.

    I just had a quick look on how these things fit together. Short answer: If you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd (and therefore before mount) you do need the fsck hook.
    Long answer:
    systemd-fsck just uses fsck.* to check the disks (see source code line 288ff.). If it does not exist, systemd-fsck just quits. The reason for this is clear: fsck tools are made by filesystem developers, not by systemd developers.
    The fsck hook is the only one that installs these binaries (fsck.*) into the initrd (see grep -r 'fsck\.' /usr/lib/initcpio). That means: No fsck hook --> no filesystem check in the initrd.
    Now to your questions:

    It is needed if you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd and therefore before being mounted. If you remove it it might be checked after leaving the initrd while being mounted read-only. But I did not test that and don't know if Arch actually does it this way. You may quickly test this yourself.

    If you use systemd in the initrd you would probably have to edit the files directly in /usr/lib/systemd/system, because mkinitcpio copies the files from there. They will be overwritten on every systemd update so that is not a very nice approach. For all output after leaving the initrd you should be able to follow the steps in the wiki (copy to /etc...)

  • Difficulty with luks lvm [SOLVED]

    Hi, I've been messing around, trying to install archlinux in VirtualBox and I'm having a bit of trouble getting it set up the way I want it.
    Here is what I'm going for
    1. ext4 - /
    2. luks lvm
      a. swap
      b. ext4 - /tmp
      c. ext4 - /home
    I managed to get it partititioned correctly, but when I'm having trouble figuring out how to make it automatically decrypt the lvm and mount the contents.

    (/dev/)sda2 is the physical partition, while "lvm" is the name of the encrypted logical volume created on it, which must be unlocked.

    IMO /-files and -directories are as sensible data as those in /home (since an attacker would e.g. be able to read other passwords, configs, what programs you are using etc.), aren't they? So encrypting your whole / (containing /home, /tmp and all, except for a separate unencrypted /boot on /dev/sda1) and swap in combination with lvm is the simple solution. -- If you are otherwise not interested in this, what I don't think, you might want to use some kind of encrypted file containers, e.g. with truecrypt.

    Besides, just for curiosity: You want to install Arch in a virtual machine, right? So why do you need hibernation for it? Do you mean this ("Full ACPI support.")?

  • Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

    I have 2 physical disks with one volume group on each of them. First contains root and /home. Second one contains /var and swap. After update I got "Timeout error" for /var and swap. I can boot in emergency systemd mode and can clearly see /var and swap partitions. I have lvm2 hook after udev and before fiesystems. I done latest changes to LVM long before and everything worked fine.

    Yep, I can see them and mount them (logical volumes). I booted with debug log level for systemd and log target to kmsg. But I can't find anything interesting in logs.

  • [SOLVED] Switch to systemd - Now system won't boot

    I saw that todays update upgrade included the installation of systemd. I looked the wiki and did the necessary changes (I already had made the /etc/hostname etc. files). So I added the
    init=/bin/systemd
    line to grub and now my system won't boot. I get an error saying something about syslog service not enabled and then a black screen. I can boot my machine fine without the "init=/bin/systemd" line but I want to run a pure systemd system since Arch is moving to it anyway. In the wiki it mentions to install systemd-sysvcompat but it conflicts with initscripts it says. What am I doing wrong or missing?

    Is LVM handled automatically by systemd? The reason I ask is because I have the USELVM= set to YES in rc.conf.
    I made the permanent transition to systemd and did not start alsa at all - sound works fine - so I never bothered with the alsa-store/alsa-restore service files at all - it just works! Also dbus gets handled by default in systemd so you don't need any starting of dbus service at all... it just works.

    Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

  • [solved] allow a systemd user service to shutdown the pc (mythtv)

    Hi,
    I have a problem with my mythtv htpc. What I want is to shutdown the PC if the PC idles.
    Mythtv (a pvr htpc software) recognizes if nobody is watching something and starts to shutdown the PC. This is not working ;(
    By default, mythtv is running als a system service with a "User=xxx" line in his .service file. I managed to configure mythtv to run as user service, so the user can start/stop it with "systemctl --user start/stop mythbackend" ... but this doesn't solve the problem.
    I installed polkit and now the user is able to shutdown the pc (systemctl poweroff) but this also doesn't help.
    I already asked in the german forum but nobody has a idea.

    I don't think this is a mythtv related problem, I think user services are just not allowed to shutdown the pc.

    To handle power from XBMC polkit rule is needed. It is probably the same with mythtv.

    Save this as /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-mythtv.rules and add user to mythtv group.

  • [SOLVED] Getting my systemd user service to talk to dbus

    I'm currently trying to set up a nice email workflow with mbsync, msmtp and notmuch.
    My passwords are saved in the Gnome keyring "login", and I've configured mbsync to use secret-tool to retrieve them. Unfortunately when secret-tool is invoked from this systemd user service there is an error when it in turn tries to call dbus-launch.
    Here is the error:

    I followed everything in that wiki, and in KaiSforza and sofar github page.
    I finally managed to get my old method (autologin to vt and autostart x) to work together with systemd --user: i put in .xinitrc "systemd --user" and deleted everything else.
    So, my .config/systemd/user/ works. The problem is in the [email protected], i guess. I configured it like wiki says, mind to post here your /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]?

  • Lvm and gparted

    a few months ago i installed arch linux on my computer. i use reiserfs as a filesystem and i have lvm on it (or is this backwards, i don't know ). i really don't know why i used lvm at installation, but at that time it seemed to me as a great tool to manage different "partitions" (logical volumes) on one partition. now i am thinking to cut a little space from my windows partition and give it to linux. So i have a few (well lots of ) questions.
    My specs first:

    4. does changing logical volumes require a restart?
    5. why does gparted show that on /dev/sda7 there is only 34 MB of used space?
    6. is it ok to have two partitions marked as boot?

    With OES11 it's possible and quite easy to use the left free space on the system disk for NSS.
    It also does not have the potential for havoc as was the case with OES2 (as with OES2 this was also possible, it just meant using EVMS on the system disk device, which could lead to issues booting after patching of updating due to needed missing kernel modules for EVMS within initrd).
    Still, even with it being possible and supported to do so, if you can house the OS bits and data (be it on NSS and other filesystems) on different disk devices.. that would always be what I'd opt for. It makes certain maintenance/recovery and update tasks easier/more flexible/reliable as OS and data partitions are not within one and the same "container".

  • [SOLVED] Remote install: how to convert LVM swap to a linux partition

    I am trying to install arch onto a remote server using the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Re … ux_Install , which outline a way to convert the swap partition to the new root partition:
    # swapoff /dev/sdaX
    # fdisk /dev/sda
    (set /dev/sdaX ID field to "Linux" - Hex 83)
    # mke2fs -j /dev/sdaX
    The problem I'm having is that the disks on the server are managed by LVM and I'm not sure how to convert the swap partition.  How do I make it available for the install?  fdisk does not want to operate on the disks because it doesn't support GPT.  Can parted do it?  Alternatively, the server has two hard drives so maybe one could be used for the install.

    gdisk is a GPT analog of fdisk, FYI. However, since the swap partition is inside an LVM container, you don't need to touch the underlying disk at all. You should be able to run mkfs on the partition immediately after swapoff.
