[solved] mplayer suddenly scaling my widescreen videos?!

I just did an upgrade, I tried mplayer with a bunch of video files and it keeps rescaling them, getting rid of the black bars on top and bottom, kind of "upscaling" which I don't want. I can't figure out how to stop it from doing this:

I have the same problem. Don't know if it happened after the upgrade or not.
I also noticed that this has something to do with Twinview/Xinerama. When the second monitor was disabled (in xorg.conf), full screen in mplayer worked as expected.
Glad to see someone with the same problem, I was just about to create a thread asking for help. -zoom, -vo xv and -xineramascreen 1 didn't help.
EDIT: By the way. I don't know if it's related, but now the mplayer window appear centered on the both monitors. Before it always appeared centered on the secondary screen (left).

  • Widescreen video capture and widescreen playback

Is there a way to capture widescreen video from Canopus ADVC 100 and have it playback widescreen as opposed to letterboxed. When I load it into a video iPod, the 4:3 aspect of the display makes the video even smaller.

Can you please walk me through the process. I am not a quicktime or video editing expert.
Would be happy to, Martin. However, there are at least three distinct work flows that appear to be most applicable to you at the moment. One uses your current digital-analog-digital approach and two would allow you to work entirely with digital material. Have to do some errands this morning, but will get back to you as soon as I can. Would help if you could provide the following information:
    1) May I assume your computer platform is equipped with a DVD ROM at the minimum?
    2) What special editing requirements may be required? (I.e., are you doing re-arranging scene order, applying special or unusual effects or filters?)
    3) Is your main concern the creation of iPod compatible files?
    4) May I assume your source material is, in fact widescreen, to begin with?
    5) Can you determine the specific aspect ratios involved for each movie and know how they effect output in light of most efficient use of encoding algorithms and use cropping/scaling routines? (I.e., into how much detail do you wish to delve?)
If you wish, contact me directly via e-mail. Might be easier to answer questions via iChat or other IM if you actually want to be talked through a session.
I play the DVD through the ADVC 100 on a DVD player via firewire to my eMac. I then open Quicktime/file/new movie recording, start the movie recording, do all the editing and crop from there through Streamclip.
Frame rate tends to be unreliable/inconsistent using this work flow since it relies on unregulated CPU access. Do you have iMovie, FCE, FCP, the free Vidi capture utility, or other dedicated device native (DV) capture/editing application?
I'm awaiting the next rev of the iPod. I believe it will accomodate for widescreen viewing, and will have a substantially larger display.
Current iPod accomodates widescreen viewing as is. It does, however, display as if it were letterboxed due to to screen aspect ratio. Main advantage at this point is increased encoding efficiency and smaller file size. Brings up additional questions regarding your preferences/requirements when it comes to question of quality vs. quantity of movies. Can discuss this further as needed later. As to future revisions, yes, I guess it might be nice to see a 9:16 screen but I'll wait to see if it ever happens.

  • [SOLVED] mplayer & mkv (ffmpeh h.264) choppy

    Hello friends,
I just installed Arch on my desktop. I'm using mplayer to play .mkv files which are x264 720p. When I do so I get a really annoying jerk in the image and sound every minute or so, sometimes more often and sometimes not as often. I have tried two different video files from two different sources and there's no difference. It also doesn't matter if it's full screen or not. My CPU usage is normally around 20% - 35% on the first core when I play video, so I doubt it's my CPU not being good enough.
Here's the mplayer output when I play a file:

  • DVD player will not play widescreen video properly...

I just created a widescreen DVD on iDVD that I was planning on watching on a standard sized television, meaning, I was expecting black bars on the footage.
I popped the DVD into my Panasonic DVD player and it seems it enlarges the video and crops out the sides.
I do not get any black bars.
When I play the DVD on another machine and on my computer, the black bars appear and everything is fine.
    Why does this happen?
My Panasonic player is at least 5 years old, if that makes any difference. I did not change any settings on it either.
I'm just worried because I have to make several copies of this DVD for people and I don't want there to be any problems.
I would really appreciate any help so that I can avoid such issues.
    Thanks!

    Hello Joaquin,
iDVD 6 used to output DVDs in "auto letterbox & pan/scan" which means it will display at whatever your DVD player is set to. To avoid a widescreen video being displayed fullscreen you would have to force letterboxing for any 4:3 device. This can be done with myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com/).What it does is edit the IFO file of the DVD, which is the file telling the DVD player what to do with the disc.
There are a number of help files and tutorials on the site ... if you run into problems, post back
    hope this helps

  • White Letterboxing on Widescreen Videos

I just got a new iPod 80gb Classic. I played back some widescreen videos and TV shows, and the "letterbox bars" are white instead of the normal black. This is driving me nuts! Has anyone else seen this or know how to change it?

hi i bought the 160Gb classic and found i had this issue aswell and thought it was default until i looked at my friends 160Gb classic.
However ive managed to trace the error:
when playing video from the video menu eg. videos > tvshow > ..
    the letterboxing is black
    but
when playing from a custom menu like tvshows placed on the main menu eg. tvshows > ..
    the letter boxing is white
i have confirmed this on 2 Ipods and i think its just a menu issue. annoying none the less.

  • True Widescreen Video on iPod Classic

Hi there, I have a new iPod classic and I've just put some videos on it. They are widescreen videos and they even show up as widescreen pics on their little thumbnails in the iPod's list of videos. However when I play them they are stretched to fit the screen and everyone's faces etc are stretched vertically.
The 'Fit to Screen' option is OFF. Toggling the 'Widescreen' option on or off doesn't change anything either.
The only reason I can think is that these are true widescreen videos, i.e. they are not letterboxed into a 4:3 ratio with black bars; they are actually in a 16:9 ratio with no black bars. Could it be that the iPod needs them to be letterboxed...?
    Please help
    Thanks,
    Josh

I think your guess is correct. In my very limited endeavors into converting video for my iPod, that 16:9 was some bad news. When I was using ImToo to convert, I did have to have it set to letterbox. Now I use Videora. When I was using ImToo and things went wrong with 16:9 letterbox, there was nothing to be done but re-convert from the original file in a stochastic process hoping to stumble on a proper aspect. Now I just use settings for Videora I found on the net and took me thinking right out of the equation! Since that isn't an option for you I'm afraid you'll have to suffer it or reacquire from a new source. However, I may be wrong. I am not all that knowledgeable. I just didn't want you to go unanswered and thought I'd share my limited experience.

  • Double Tapping for Widescreen video taking is no nonger required

For quite some time the only way to take widescreen video on an iphone was to turn it sideways of course then to dbl tap the screen to get 16x9 recording.
Now that is not the case at all and I have been wasting my time with my new phone dbl tapping away.  It is the only camera I have ever used that by default does not show you in the viewfinder what you are actually recording.  That is the only use to dbl tap is to see the actual preview. The ending result is the same.
Anyone have any ideas why the default view for widescreen video taking is not 16x9.  I do get one use and that is for Facetime but that usually is using the back lense.
My post is to let all those dbl tappers out there know that it is not required anymore with the 4s.  I simply did not know this until recently.

have tried to import from DVD since the video I ripped from the disc through Handbrake
Handbrake is absolutely the wrong tool to use for converting DVD footage to use for editing. It is designed to convert DVD-Video for viewing on other devices - NOT for editing.
Use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files to QuickTime DV/DVCPro, then import the resulting file into your FCP project.

    Hi harish.venkat,
welcome to the forums. Did you notice this thread is rather old? You should not necro-post, see our forum etiquette about this.
Please create a new thread of your own. You may link back to this one if necessary.

  • 1440x1080 scaling down - widescreen?

    Premiere Pro cs4,
Hi....working with some video I got.  The size is 1440x1080.
I need to scale down for standard definition.  So, when I create my premiere project, do I create a
DV-NTSC Widescreen 48kHz sequence?  I tried that and when I scale down the video 46%, it seems to fit.
When I create a DV-NTSC Standard 48kHz sequence, and scale down, black bars show up on the top
and bottom, obviously b/c of the size.
My question is, if I make it the DV-NTSC Widescreen 48kHz sequence so no video gets cut off,
what will the end user see on a standard definition tv?  will they see black bars at the top and bottom?
    Is that acceptable or normal?

Once in Encore, you can mix 4:3 and 16:9, but in your case you don't need to: your movies will be 16:9 and your menus should match.  But this is not a project setting, since the DVD specs and Encore allow you to mix them.
It will also help you to read some more about this.  These answers may leave you with some misconceptions because you are asking fairly specific questions and are missing some of the background.    Here for Encore (found CS5 first):  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/encore/cs/using/WSE5BEA26E-E238-44b1-8196-7FD4EC8DD3F1a.html  Here re pixel sizes and PAR (found CS4 first): http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS03BF7479-8C7B-4522-8C75-210AD102524Ea.html#W S082E922A-A5D7-4de1-9A0E-1EFC401EA6D1
For example, you were told that it is widescreen because it has nonsquare pixels.  That is true, but the "regular" shape (4:3) also has nonsquare pixels - they are just different rectangular proportions.  Some of the HD formats use square pixels.  The main point: there is no simple rule of thumb: know the options and be sure you know what you have and what your final delivery is to be.
I agree with the answer you have been given about whether you can make widescreen (16:9) video into 4:3.  (You can, but you have to crop it or letterbox it.)  And then all your widescreen capable viewers will miss the original content.
So many people now have widescreen, that I see no reason to lock your DVD into a 4:3 shape, so yes, stay with the wide screen.
When I provide wide screen DVDs to a customer, I provide a label that says "widescreen," and a link to my website (http://www.videoandcomputer.com/faq.htm) that has an explanation for how to set up your DVD player.
The problem Rod describes (his DVD player 4:3 TV combination won't play a widescreen correctly) is less and less common.  It does not matter thatit is an analogue or older TV.  The setup is in the DVD player.  And you've really got to have an old DVD player for it not to have a setup that tells it what kind of TV it is hooked to.  That is a manual setting.   If you set the DVD player to "4:3 TV" the DVD player will know to letterbox when it sends out a widescreen video to the TV.

  • IDVD 4 and Widescreen video

Sometimes things turn out better than you expect. I had widescreen video that I made into movies (iMovie 4) and then burned to DVD. I expected to have the black bands on my widescreen TV, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that my movies filled the whole screen! (My DVD player is an older Sony home theater system.) I have ordered iLife 5 and my question is do I need to delete iLife 4 before I install it? Will iMovie 5 play the movies I made in iMovie 4?

Thanks for the positive feedback! Pleasant change.
Read Dan Slagle's site for answers to your questions:
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/
You can keep iLife 4 on your Mac and still install iLife 5. I like iLife 4 for converting analog to digital ( iMovie 5 and 6 has a bug that prevents some cameras from converting like they do with iMovie 4)
You can open iLife 4 projects with iLife 5, ,but I suggest making certain that the project is complete prior to opening in the newer version.

12/13/2014 I suddenly no longer stream videos because of a blocked plug in on my Mac Safari 5.1.10  MacOSX 10.6.8
updated to snow leopard& mountain lion I use adobe flash. My preferences allow all plug ins.

If my experience with a similarly aged computer is any indicator, you'll notice an immediately speed hit once you've upgraded to Mavericks. Each OS X update tends to be more memory hungry than the previous and my 2007 iMac wasn't happy with Lion until I upgraded the RAM and at that point Lion performance roughly matched Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion and then Mavericks shaved some speed off again. Mavericks on the 2007 iMac was okay for the most part but switching between applications was slow as was the fileselector.
My 2009 MBP saw similar slowdowns with Lion but I was above to upgrade it to 8GB which made a big difference. (My iMac was limited to 6GB) but I still saw a significant speed hit with Mt Lion when I tried to run multiple memory intensive applications. Seeing how my wife's MacBook Air dealt with Mt Lion with only 4GB I decided to install an SSD in the MBP and wow what a difference. Tried it with the iMac using a FireWire800 enclosure and saw similar improvement.
So to boil it down to one sentence, you are going to see a significant speed hit with only 4GB but if you can afford to upgrade your drive to an SSD you'll be amazed at how well that computer can run.

  • HT203200 How can i solve the -50 error when downloading video from itunes??

How can I solve the -50 error when downloading video from itunes.   The apple support people cannot even figure it out!??

The 2330 error often means some sort of damage to the filing system as might happen if the battery fell out while the disk was in use.
Try running a disk check to see if it finds and fixes any errors.

  • [SOLVED]Mplayer/Mencoder with mp3lame support

I'm searchig to encode my .avi file to use it with my Zen.
I want to use mencoder to make this and not ffmpeg because there is a useful script based on mencoder.
But mplayer in arch linux repository has not mp3lame support enabled.
I don't know how to build it with this stuff, all my trials to make the PKGBUILD works are failed.
Have someone an idea of how to modify the configure option in mplayer's PKGBUILD to enable mp3lame.

if the only options available with ./configure --help are --disable-{mp3lame,mp3lame-lavc} then doesn't that mean they are enabled by default? in that case why is he getting the error at the start of this post?
mine seems to have it, though i don't have a file to test right now:

Any ideas as to what is happening? My ~/.mplayer/config contains the following:
    # Write your default config options here!
    [extension.mkv]
    demuxer=mkv
    sid=0
    ass=yes
    embeddedfonts=yes
    fontconfig=yes
What gets me is that the Display Height and Display Width are clearly being detected by the demuxer--but it's as if that information isn't making it all the way down to when it starts playing. Thoughts?
EDIT: I should also mention that without the demuxer being set to mkv, I still don't get the AR preserved.

There was a bug in mplayer for a short time. It's possible the current mplayer in Arch is exactly that buggy version. Try mplayer-svn from AUR.
