[SOLVED] OpenBox - Transparency and Virtual Desktop Switcher

Hi All
I've just recently, in the last 2 days, switched from Gnome 3.2 to Openbox. I've never really used it before except for a short period on #! as I recall. I've a couple of problems I don't seem to be able to find any answers to and hopefully someone on here already knows how:
1) I'm using Guake dropdown terminal - I don't mind switching to any other terminal if necessary. I can't get transparency to work correctly with it though. I've installed the following to try to resolve the issue:
Cairo Composite Manager
transset-df
If I issue the command:
transset-df -n 'Guake!' &
the Guake terminal sets to transparent which is great. However, as soon as the window retracts and I call it back again the transparency has switched off.
2) I've installed tint2 and it's pretty good. Problem is I can't find a way to get a virtual desktop switcher. Again, this choice isn't cast in stone, I'm quite happy to change to any other application, or set of applications, to achieve the following:
Virtual Desktop Switcher - i like the way pypanel does this actually. I'm happy enough with the mouse wheel switching desktops but I'd like some indication of which desktop I'm on.
Date and Time with a calendar - I've got Orca working quite well on a click on the clock for the calendar.
I would have thought this was pretty simple to resolve really, it's just that i don't know Openbox that well yet and I could use some advice on the best way to resolve the issues.
Thanks in advance
Rich

I've actually managed to resolve the transparency issue as well.
sudo pacman -S devilspie xcompmgr transset-df
Then in .config/openbox/autostart:
# Start Composite Manager
xcompmgr &
# Start Devilspie to alter windows
devilspie -a &
# Start Main Panel
tint2 &
Finally, create a file in .devilspie called guake.ds with the following content:
(if
(is (window_name) "guake.py" )
(begin
(spawn_sync (str "transset-df -i " (window_xid) " 0.5") )

  • Virtual Desktop switching in Mavericks

With Mavericks, each display has its own set of virtual desktops whereas before, a virtual desktop "spanned" displays.
I used to have 4 virtual desktops.  After the upgrade, these virtual desktops were mapped to my primary monitor, and the secondary had one virtual desktop.  That part was ok as I use the secondary monitor only to run a Terminal that I would use across all my virtual desktops.  But the inconvenience now is switching virtual desktops!  If I'm typing something in the terminal on the secondary monitor and want to quickly go to another virtual desktop, I now first have to bring the mouse over to the primary monitor and THEN switch desktops.  Very annoying.
Does someone know of a setting or utility that can map the "virtual desktop switching" keyboard combination to a fixed display?
Apple, are you listening?  Why is Mavericks not smart enough to realize that when a user hits the keyboard combination for switching virtual desktops on a display with only ONE virtual desktop that this probably means they meant to switch virtual desktops on the other display (especially when there's only one display with multiple virtual desktops!)?

It is highly unlikely anybody working for Apple who can do anything about this is reading these forums. You might want to consider submitting the form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html for things like this.
Be sure to indicate in the 'feedback type' popup the most appropriate choice for your submission. That is the best way to get it seen by the right people.

  • Gdm 2.28.0-1 and virtual desktops

    Hi,
Recently updated to gdm 2.28.0-1 and it has a whole new look, and is possibly the cause of a new problem.  I run openbox via the openbox session option available in gdm, and I noticed today that my virtual desktops are not what I specified in my rc.xml.  Speaking with the openbox developers, I got some specific information:
On the root window, _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS has already been set at time of openbox startup, and openbox respects that and does not set a new value from its config.  Is this new behavior known/expected?  Any way I can get it to stop doing that?
    thanks.

I've found some bugs on the issue:
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444135
    http://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4040
Slightly surprised I haven't encountered it until now.  I may just ditch gdm, but I sortof like using it - for the odd occasion I want a different session, or I use to shutdown/reboot.

  • Will UE-V work across Physical and virtual desktops

We are currently evaluating few product, and are looking for a product that can work across our VMWare VDI infrastructure as well as physical hardware to provide transparent and seamless UEM. Profile management is a key for us, the goal is to achieve as
identical as possible experience between out Windows 7 and 8 machines.

UE-V is designed to synchronize data between any desired environments. This includes physical systems, virtual desktops, RemoteApp applications, and App-V applications.
See the Comparing UE-V to other Microsoft products section here.
The ability to synchronize common settings between Windows 7 and Windows 8 was
    added in UE-V Beta 2.

  • Screen Sharing and Virtual Desktop

Is there a way to force a new remote screen sharing connect to a "Virtual Desktop"?
In my experience, if another user is logged into the computer the new remote screen connection will be forced or given the option to connect to a virtual desktop. This will allow the new connection to run in the "background" without the first connection being influenced.
The issue is when a new remote connection is initiatied and no other connections are active the new connection will be shown on the computer's hardware monitor. i.e. No option is given to connect via a virtual desktop.
This is a security issue because a user can connect remotely and if he is the only connection on the computer he will have all his work shown on the hardware display.
I am hoping to find a way to force all remote connections to be on virtual desktops.

I guess its worth mentioning that although you can indeed screen share from Leopard to Tiger, it only works when you are on the same network. But Remote Desktop works across the internet...
Of course the trick to using Remote Desktop from a truly "remote" location elsewhere on the internet is that you have to be able to reach the IP of the computer you want to control, which can be tricky if its behind a NAT and the person your trying to reach is my Mom who has no idea how to configure her NAT, or firewall, or even find her IP address without my help.
Screen sharing Leopard to Leopard via iChat should be much more straight forward... translation: this will make my life much easier the next time my mom needs help.

    Hi there,
It will be helpful if you can give us the following information
    1. Has this scenario worked for you when using Captivate 4?
    2. What are you trying to Capture? You can let us know the type of application, type of capture setting, and when does it close the application.

  • UCCX 8.02 and Virtual Desktops

    Hello,
I see documentation on CAD and recording running on MTS and Xen/App but I have a couple of questions.
    1.  When they mention MTS, is that supported only in terminal server sessions (RDS) or does that include virtual desktops (Hyper-V)?
    2.  Is there anything out there being used for virtual desktops for agents?
    Any guidance would be appreciated.

To tide you over until a real answer comes long, here is the only document which speaks to CAD in a virtualized environment.  Hopefully you haven't already seen this.

  • Yosemite transparency and horrendous desktop gradients

One of the things that I find really irritating and cannot be solved through the 'Reduce Transparency' Accessibility option is the way in which the desktop looks horrendous when under the translucency of one of Yosemite's overlays. For instance, in the login screen and when you go into Mission Control, Yosemite makes the desktop behind it look like a horrible mess of gradients. This is true on a Retina screen, and its even worse on a 1080p screen. While not 'elegant', the dark grey in Mavericks looked wonderful by comparison. I wish there was a way to alter this in Yosemite.

Even iBooks on MBP Retina !?
I love the iBooks app and use it specifically because of the "Night" appearance option, which turns the page background all black and the font white (similar to inverting the display). Fortunately books' font sizes remain adjustable as big as I want, but - I can no longer see page information (current page number and number of pages left to read) at the bottom of each page.  The page information is barely visible (appears like small dark grey foggy font on a black background). This is very likely also the result of the Yosemite font fiasco.  Not an issue when reading books in "Night" appearance on the iPad, (they didn't break it yet yet in iOS).
"Digital Books without page numbering information"!
    A Huge design fiasco.

  • [solved]Openbox margins and Conky

I have a 1 line conky that i want to remain at the top of my screen at all times. I set up a margin in openbox to leave enough pixels at the top to comfortably fit the conky. The problem is that when i first boot to my desktop conky is placed below the margin. If i restart X however conky is right where i want it in the margin. Does anyone know how to put conky in the right place the first time?
.conkyrc is setup for top_left placement and theres only a few pixels on the y axis from the top.
I call conky from .xinitrc  before openbox
I can't think of any other relevant info but let me know!

  • E18, google hangouts and virtual desktops

I have a problem after upgrading to e18. When I receive a new message in the google hangouts (chrome extension) the window to change desktops pops up highlighting the desktop with that particular hangout. In e17 it worked all fine. I clicked that desktop, changed to it and the window was gone. In e18, I not only cannot change to the desktop using this window but the window stay forever even if I change manually. Restart helps but this quite annoying. I went through all settings but it did not help. As said, it was all fine in e17

All I can do is suggest filing a bug report at phab.enlightenment.org

  • No RemoteApp, No Virtual Desktop, I just need a connection to computers to work

I am supporting someone who has changed from an SBS 2003 computer to Server 2008 R2 Standard and they want the same functionality that they had with Remote Web Workplace, which is supposed to be doable with RD Web. They don't need RemoteApps and have no
interest in Virtual Desktops. However I just haven't been able to get it up and running and I can't find anything on TechNet or anywhere else that helps since he needs what is considered a non-standard installation. It's a small office. They can't justify
a second computer and don't want to add memory and disk space to make it possible to run a VM, though the
main problem is that they can't live with the downtime it would take for the conversion. For that reason, though Microsoft hates the idea, it needs to work on a DC. Between that and the singular focus Microsoft apparently has on RemoteApps
and Virtual Desktops there is very little anywhere on my problem.
I can get to the RD web web page just fine. An RDP on the RemoteApp page will take me to the server just fine. A remote connection on a Windows 7 client outside of the office lets me connect to the server. But if I choose the Remote Desktop tab on the web
page and enter a computer name that I know is configured to allow remote access and is up and running it will try to connect for a while and then pop up with the (in)famous "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:"
message. What's really strange is that this happens even if I enter the server name, the same computer that I successfully connect to using two other methods. I also notice that the resources available to the Windows 7 client that is successfully connecting
to the server only lists 1 desktop.
In addition I keep getting this warning popping up even though I do have the correct server configured as running the RemoteApp service because since I'm only running the one server I'm not running the RD connection broker.
"RD Web Access was unable to contact <servername>, which is the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service. Ensure that the name of the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp
and Desktop Connection Management service is entered correctly, and that the server is running and available on the network. Error code: 1722."
I've been working on this for many days now and just can't get this working.

The RD Web Access server and the RD Session Host server are the same computer. The source specified is the internal FQDN name of the server
computername.domain_name.local. I also tried setting it to localhost since it is on the same server and it made no difference. Reading the article you linked to I see that everything on there I have checked and the server is configured properly.
The Remote Desktop Services role is installed with the Remote Desktop Session Host, Remote Desktop Licensing, Remote Desktop Gateway and Remote Desktop Web Access role services installed.
The Best Practices Analyzer keeps showing that the RD Gateway server is not configured to use a valid SSL certificate even though I do have a third party SSL certificate properly installed. It also says that the Remote Desktop Users group on the RD Session
Host server needs to contain domain users even though it already does have them.
As I said in my original post it seems very strange that I can successfully connect to the server using two different methods but the method of going to the Remote Desktop tab on the RD Web main page and entering the server name doesn't work.
