Oracle Installation on linux Error in invoking target ntcontab.o
Hi All,
During installing Oracle 8i EE on mandrake Linux 7.0, at the point of linking oracle protocol support 8.1.6.1.0 ,while Linking in progress I got the following message box
"Error in invoking target ntcontab.o of make file /home/network/lib/ins_net_client.mk.
==================
ABORT,RETRY,IGNORE
==================
If I select igmore and continue , even after successfull installation ,when try to run svrmgr or sqlplus at the shell $
I am getting error in loading shared libraries.
Thanks a lot for the help
Anant Kuslekar
nullhi,i got the some problem too.
but maybe below could do some help:
================================================
Instructions for Existing Oracle8i Installations
Place the tar file glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz in $ORACLE_HOME.
Make sure ORACLE_HOME is set in your environment. Then carry out
the following steps:
cd $ORACLE_HOME
tar xvfz glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz
./setup_stubs.sh
You should now be able to use Oracle as usual.
================
Warning
Make sure the directory $ORACLE_HOME/lib is not listed in your
/etc/ld.so.conf. The system could potentially become unstable
after applying this patch in that case. If $ORACLE_HOME/lib is
currently listed in /etc/ld.so.conf, remove it and run ldconfig
before applying this patch.
================================
Notes for Application Developers
If your application does not require linking at install sites,
then no additional steps are required for your application to be
compatible with glibc or the Oracle8i client shared library
after the installation of this patch. This is true regardless of
whether your application was compiled using glibc-2.1.3 or a
later version.
If your application is compiled using glibc-2.1.3 and requires
linking at install-time using the Oracle8i client shared ibrary,
then you may also need to link your application using the stub
libraries provided in this patch. For example, an application
which might typically be linked as follows on a glibc-2.1.3
based system:
gcc -o app app.o -L$ORACLE_HOME/lib -lclntsh
should now be linked as follows on systems with a newer version
of glibc,in order to ensure compatibility:
gcc -o app app.o -L$ORACLE_HOME/lib -L$ORACLE_HOME/lib/stubs -
lclntsh
If your application is compiled using a version of glibc later
than 2.1.3 and requires linking at install-time using the acle8i
client shared library, then you must NOT link your application
with the stub libraries provided in this patch. Doing so may
either cause the link to fail or the resulting executables to be
invalid.
Note that the stub libraries provided in this patch only cover
the shared objects that make up glibc. If your application must
be linked at install-time with other shared objects which were
built to have dependencies on the locally installed version of
glibc (e.g., X11), then your application must be compiled using
the same version of glibc that was used by those other
components. For example, on a system with glibc-2.2, linking your
application with libX11.so will fail if you attempt to use the
glibc-2.1.3stub libraries, since libX11.so on that system will
have been compiled and linked using glibc-2.2. -
Oracle 9i Error in invoking target ntcontab.o of makefile
Does anybody know what this means / how to get the install to continue (I am using Mandrake 8.1) I am new both to Oracle and Linux, help to finally get this installed would be much appreciated.

For example from this error we can see that gcc probably is missing.
Check install guide and install required packages. -

if any1 did find a soln to it plz. let me know.Dear:
My English is bad, but I think you will understand me what I
saying.I show what i did in my computer system.
First: I download i386-glibc-2.1-linux.tar.bz2,
readme.oracle8i from
ftp://ftp.ca.kernel.org/pub/software/libs/glibc/hjl/sdk/2.1
and
Second : I read the file readme.oracle8i,and do what it
said.
It's ok to solve the problem.
Good Luck. -
Installed on make "error in invoking target ..." on AIX 5L
I read through the other posts that looked simillar and tried the fixes that were suggested. However, none of them have worked.
I have a pseries IBM server with AIX 5L. I have loaded all of the prerequisits (as far as I can tell). The Universal Installer works fine until it gets to the part where it actually links the files. Then I get the "Error in invoking target install of makefile /../ins_sqlplus.mk.
I believe that I have plenty of disk space allocated, plenty of memory and my Oracle environment variables are set correctly. What I don't know is why I am getting part s of the scripts echoed out to me. That makes me think that the scripts were broken to begin with.
I would appreciate any insight anyone might have.
When I attempt to run the linking process manually the output I get is something like this for each component I try to link:

and on, and on.I read through the other posts that looked simillar and tried the fixes that were suggested.

Dear Mister Forbrich,
Thanks for your help.
What do you mean by "But you may have a resolution"?It has been suggested that getting Solaris instead of OpenSolaris will solve your problem.
Have you verified that? If 'yes', you have a solution. If 'no', then you may have a solution.
>
Of course I intend to be 'polite' and as respectfull to you as you deserve it. I also want to be respectfull to the rules as they are defined in these forums which, it's true, are new to me.That 'polite' comment was directed at the community, not specifically at you. There are no rules about closing threads, so people who want to be nice to the community will use the tactic I suggested. However, there are many instances of problems being resolved and neither being marked as solved nor having a summary.
Following my understanding, these rules state that the "correct" button should be used if the original question is answered, otherwise "helpfull" should be used. Is there any misunderstanding on that?The marking of responses as 'correct' or 'helpful' is a strong suggestion. It is not an un-alterable rule. The suggestion is that you reward those who helped you resolve your problem or answer your question. How you reward them is up to you.
Note, however, that not rewarding correct or helpful responses may result in not getting many responses in the future. Some of us only respond to get rewards. For others of us (including myself) the challenge of understanding the question and learning more during the resolution is reward in itself.
Sadly, you can not revoke your reward if the answer is later found to be incorrect, so use the rewards wisely.
Issuing rewards is independent of marking the question as answered.
>
Of course, I am going to follow your advise and post a final summary concerning the "resolution" as my last entry on the thread.That would be nice. It is not mandatory, and few people do it. If everyone provided that summary of correct answers to the questions or problems, these forums would be 100x as useful.

Oracle 9i, "Error in invoking target install of..."
Hi :),
When running the Ora9i Universal Installer, I got this pop-up window error:
" Error in invoking target install of makefile /opt/oracle/OraHome1/plsql/lib/ins_plsql.mk "
I tried to fix it as explained in http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.shtml#OracleInstallationErrors but after executing the genclntsh script I got this message:
collect2: ld terminated with signal 11 [Segmentation fault]
ar: creating /opt/oracle/OraHome1/lib/libclntst9.a
Created /opt/oracle/OraHome1/lib/libclntst9.a
Could you please give me a hand with this?
Cheers!
p.s. I'm using Linux Debian sid

10gR2 is de-supported - plus CentOS is not a certified distro, so things may or may not work - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15668/toc.htm#BABIAECC

Hi all,
Pre-installation:
I install the oracle with user "oracle" which belongs to "dba" group.
The environment variables are
PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/dt/bin:/usr/platform/SUNW,Ultra-80/sbin:/opt/sun/bin:/opt/SUNWexplo/bin
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib
OPENWINHOME=/usr/openwin
ORACLE_OWNER=oracle
Also, i created /oracle folder for the installation of oracle
Synonym:

The content of /oracle/OraHome92/install/make.log is as follows

/oracle/OraHome92/bin/gennttab > ntcontab.c ;\
