[Solved]Pacman file delay

Just reinstalled arch onto my main machine and I noticed that, before I had -Syu'd back up to bleeding-edge my pacman was working flawlessly. After an -Syu there is a very noticeable delay (~7sec) between every file transfer. I also noticed this delay BEFORE reinstalling arch on my old configuration. I'm not entirely sure where the difference may come from,
I don't remember pacman being one of the packages being updated in the -Syu.

It might be. What I can't understand though is what is changing between the 2009.02 core iso fresh install and the immediately after -Syu? How would I go about 'fixing' (or at least learning about) a possible DNS problem? I'm sure to keep my /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.conf entries related to hostname in sync and proper but I'm not 100% positive if that's related to DNS.
@Xyne: I was planning on installing powerpill sometime soon, i just wanted to solve this problem first so that powerpill would be at optimum performance.
Edit: !!!! i installed and configured dnsmasq and WOW. Problem solved (at least on my other computer). I'll try it on my main one sometime soon. Thanks for the tip off!

Looks like another pacman-cage screw-up....  these are fun to recover from.
Anyway, the error from pacman-cage shows that something is using a file in the pacman db folder so pacman cage can not unmount that folder to re-extract your pacman database.  Close what ever program is pointing there (pacman???), reboot if you can not figure it out, and re-run pacman-uncage.

  • Need pacman files for /usr/bin

Hello, in a freak accident as root, I've deleted my /bin folder. I still have all the rest intact. All I need is pacman's files in that folder in order to recover the others. Can anyone zip their /usr/bin or just their /usr/bin with the pacman files?
And yes, I have learned my lesson about double checking commands before execution as root.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman "config file could not be read" error during Arch ins

I've been attempting to get Arch setup for a while now, and after having some trouble with partitions, my wireless connecting, and setting up repos and mirrors, which the Wiki helped me solve, I've hit a bigger bump.  While updating the system using pacman as the Beginners Guide says to do, I get errors when I try to continue the update process as follows :
btw: I'm typing this on a laptop next to my computer
    [root@McArch~]# pacman -Syu
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/core could not be read
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/extra could not be read
error: config file /etc/pacman.d/community could not be read

error: failed to updated core (unexpected error)
error: failed to updated extra (unexpected error)
error: failed to updated community (unexpected error)
error: failed to synchronize any databases
Any tips as to whats going on?  I've tried to created said files, and even insert mirrors into the file, like in the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file but this doesn't seem to help

    Glad you got it working.
I'm not sure what happened in your install but I just finished using an old 2007.08 iso and pacman first starts out with /etc/pacman.d/core, etc/pacman.d/extra, /etc/pacman.d/community ... etc., but I never had your problem when I did the #pacman -Syu after initial install reboot.  The pacman update removes the above mentioned repos and replaces them with a single /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.  You must have messed up an initial config file somehow as I couldn't get the same errors you got.  It looks like you had your /etc/pacman.conf file messed up somehow and when you pointed it to the mirrorlist it could finally work properly.  I'll just include my /etc/pacman.conf file and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist so you can compare.  NB*  these are from my x86_64 so for 32 bit machines i686 would replace x86_64 in the files.

  • [SOLVED] Pacman failed retrieving file 'core.db' after removing KDE

Hey, I had to remove KDE and foolishly used the -Rsc flag. Now, trying to update yields:
    [root@Gal-PC2 gal]# pacman -Sy
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.isoc.org.il : Resolving timed out after 10524 milliseconds
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.us.leaseweb.net : Resolving timed out after 10523 milliseconds
I tryed using the -Sy and -Syy flags to update the database, and made sure I am not using ipv6. I think the -Rsc flag might deleted an importent package. I can connect to the net, and I can acess mirrors using http and I can ping the mirrors. The error persists on a large number of mirrors. Any help will be appriciated.

    EDIT: SOLVED!
Ok, so I did indeed disable ipv6 as I promised, but turns out I put in the GRUB kernel line "ipv6.disable_ipv6=1". Upon re-reading the wiki, turns out this means ipv6 is disabled but tunnels with ipv6 may be opened by programs. I changed to "ipv6.disable=1" and pacman updates away! I hope others will find this usefull. Be careful!

  • [SOLVED] Pacman error: failed retrieving file : No address record

I just installed Arch on a x86 laptop using the cd as the package source. I wanted to do a net install, but when I attempted to (regardless of the mirror) I got many responses from pacman in tty7 of "No address record". This happened despite having a network connection and being able to ping any site from the cli.
After installing, I am still having the same problem. The laptop is plugged in via ethernet, and I can ping any site I want, but a call to pacman -Syyu just returns numerous errors such as
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.rit.edu : No address record
And just as a test, I was getting replies when pinging mirror.rit.edu.
    Last edited by process91 (2011-11-18 18:21:17)

    Try the following steps:
1 - Set the VirtualBox Networking option to NAT
2 -  Start the arch machine in the VirtualBox
    3 -  Edit /etc/rc.conf as a dynamic IP:
    HOSTNAME="arch"
    interface=eth0
    address=
    netmask=
    broadcast=
    gateway=
    4 - Run dhcpcd
5 -  Try to ping a couple of sites, or your router
If you still can't ping or anything, I suggest you start a new thread specifically about your problem. Include the output from "ipconfig -a". You're not going to get much help from posting in a thread marked "[SOLVED]".

  • [SOLVED]Pacman systemd missing file

Everytime when I run pacman I get this error:
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/systemd-217-8/desc: No such file or directory
I think i messed up something when upgrading system.
Can you help me to solve this issue?
    Thanks
    Last edited by Arch3R (2014-11-29 19:14:08)

    Just reinstall systemd:
    pacman -S systemd
select yes if it prompts due to it already being installed.
You might also want to run `pacman -Qk` to see if any other packages have been damaged.
EDIT: I just did some silly trial and error and deleted that file from my system (probably would have been smarter to move/rename it).  Reinstalling systemd failed due to a conflicting file error as all the files for the package are there, but the pacman database doesn't realize they belong to that package.  In this case I used --force with the single specific package:
    pacman -S --force systemd
Note that this use of --force is an apparent necessity to fix this specific problem.  This does not support using it when uncertain why something fails - I knew why it was failing.

  • [SOLVED] pacman: which package should I install for a given file?

    Hi there!
I'm still trying to learn arch's essentials. A question coming up frequently is:
Say I know I need file /usr/bin/zipinfo. How do I find out which package it's delivered in? The only thing remotely similar in the wiki is
    pacman -Qo /path/to/a/file
but this only works for already installed packages. So what next?
    Best wishes,
    Rufus
P.S.: google told me the package is called unzip so that's not the problem. Still, there has to be some way to get this information from the command line.
Last edited by RufusD (2010-04-24 15:30:31)

brilliant, thanks! I could have figured it's not a standard pacman function (since the situation is similar with debian's apt-get).
Maybe this is worth a mention on pacman's wiki page. This is the first time arch's fabulous wiki let me down

  • [SOLVED] Missing pacman files?

While trying to "pacman -Syu" I get the message:
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/local/binutils-2.21-8/desc
Error message repeats too many times to count.  I am then prompted with:
    Proceed with installation?
...I answered YES, and packages were downloaded, but failed to upgrade, displaying the following multiple times:

    ... then

  • [SOLVED] Overwrite files with pacman.

    Hello all
I know that pacman, as a design feature, does not overwrite files by default. I've read the post and the wiki about it.
But I've a situation where I would need to overwrite dozens of files, in different directories, and it would be very nice, If possible, to make an exception to this rule.
I dont know how, but I've messed up an Kdemod upgrade. It stopped working and I cant uninstall it, because pacman doesnt find the appropriate groups (Kdemod-complete and Kdemod-uninstall).
On the other hand, I cant simply reinstall it, or kde[extra], because pacman gives dozens "leftover file" messages in different directories, and refuses to overwrite them.
I just want a way to reinstall KDEmod, at least to try to remove everything with "pacman -Rd kdemod-uninstall" and start from scratch, if it doesnt work. And, I would like to escape manually removing all the files in different directories or a full system reinstall.
    Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.

In fact, the -f flag was deliberately deprecated in favor of --force specifically to make it less likely that someone will try using it.

  • Pacman files downloaded, and saved to. [Solved]

I was wondering, I looked on Arch Wiki first, but didn't find what I needed, where does pacman download files that you later install, for example pacman -S kde  I know there must be a place where KDE files must be stored, unless pacman automatically cleans up unnecessary files after it installs the package, if not, where would I go to remove the left overs, now since KDE is installed, I feel I don't need the KDE installation files, since it's already installed.

    It won't destroy it.
You may want to have a looks at some scripts that can help you with the cleaning https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=122656
Heh, too late, just ran the pacman -Scc command, it cleared it, thanks for your help, .
I would highly recommend NOT doing pacman -Scc. It wont hurt anything, but then it will remove ALL packages from /var/cache/pacman/pkg- if in the future you need to downgrade a package that introduces a bug, you will not be able to via pacman's cache. Now, there is the ARM and the Download script in the AUR that can assist you with downgrading, but these also rely on your network working and take time to grab each package.
A better approach is to run pacman -Sc. This will clear all packages EXCEPT ones currently installed. So, if you use your system a while, seems to have no bugs, then you can run pacman -Sc to clear everything except the packages currently installed. Just a suggestion...

  • [SOLVED] pacman error: cannot open package file

    Hi
I didn't use my Arch box for a while and today launched it.
I had to install the "p7zip" package, but I'm a "build everything from sources" guy and I tried to install it from source as always. Unsuccessfully: it required nasm.
Decided to install it using pacman, to get it done quickly.
So, I've got the nasm package and uploaded it to my Arch machine (it has no inernet connection, I use NFS to share files).
    Executed
    pacman -U ./nasm-2.09.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
and for my surprise I've got:
    loading package data...
error: './nasm-2.09.10-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz': cannot open package file
Then I tried to run  pacman -U for one of "core" packages from the original media (2010.05) and the same result. Some time ago it was working fine.
It gets this error for every file.
The tar.gz file is not broken, I can browse it within Midnigh Commander and get any file .
What could be wrong? Any ideas?
