[SOLVED]pacman problem
I am getting the following error when i try to install/upgrade anything with pacman.
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db: Failed to open '/var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db'
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/extra.db: Failed to open '/var/lib/pacman/sync/extra.db'
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/community.db: Failed to open '/var/lib/pacman/sync/community.db'
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db: Failed to open '/var/lib/pacman/sync/archlinuxfr.db'
this occurred after i removed: package-query, pacman-color, perl-xyne-arch, powerpill and yaourt.
i removed those because when i tried to upgrade pacman itself i was getting the following error
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: package-query: requires pacman<3.5
:: pacman-color: requires pacman=3.4.3
:: perl-xyne-arch: requires pacman<3.5
I am guessing package-query is something i should not have removed?
anyone know how to solve this?

yup always keep an eye on what the upgrade manager tells you. As mrunion noted, you have to run pacman-db-upgrade because pacman 3.5 uses a different db format than pacman 3.4.x

[solved] pacman broken after "pacman -Syyu" excluding pacman
Hi forums,
I use arch x86_64, yaourt and the testing and multilib repositories.
A full system upgrade doing "yaourt -Syyu" didn't work, because pacman had an unfulfilled dependancy which I don't recall, but it was about a normal and a multilib version: I probably have the multilib version of a library installed, which has not been updated to the version required by pacman yet.
So I thought it would be perfectly fine to exclude pacman from this system upgrade by choosing "manually" from the options given by "yaourt -Syyu" and commented pacman.
The upgrade then went fine except for the two final lines:
package-query: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
testdb: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Now everytime I try to use pacman, I get this error:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Do you know how to solve this?

Actually, I was more concerned about updates for packages from AUR. yaourt would handle AUR packages as if they were in a repository, and update them, solving dependency problems.
Now what I fear is, that if some regular library gets an update, it may not updated on my system in the first place, because pacman only sees that the older version is needed for the AUR software, but is not capable of updating the AUR package (which works with the new library version) automatically. So updates will break some software unless I remove it first and install the latest version manually. -
[Solved] Pacman errors: "call to execv failed", system not booting
Recent upgrade (yesterday) - problems went like this:
1) pacman -Syu attempted "filesystem" upgrade and threw errors about some directories in /usr/local being 775 not 755.
2) that was because I had a non-standard package in there. I changed just those relevant directories to 755.
3) reattempted pacman -Syu but got a bunch of errors: "call to execv failed"
4) system was immediately borked. Reboot now throws me into a shell.
This is a 32 bit system.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

1) used Arch LiveCD. Mounted boot and / partitions
2) pacman -r /path/to/root -Syyu glibc filesystem
3) reboot gave "Unable to find root device error"

Yesterday everything was working great but today it isn't anymore.
The problem
I did
pacman -Syu
Output:

So i choose Y and i get this:

What does this mean and how can I solve this?

Last edited by tgoossens (2011-03-24 12:11:46)I had this same problem, and I went through the instructions as posted, but it must have removed pacman in the process. Now, I cannot update anything. I went through the stickied topic on pacman but it didn't work. I found some instructions on downloading pacman and installing it manually, but now every time I run the pacman command I get:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libalpm.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I googled that and none of those instructions work for me. Is there a way I can save my system?
Edit: And now my laptop has the same error preventing me from updating Pacman, what should I do to resolve that one? I would think that something in the repositories needs to be fixed and this is probably a bug, considering the home page doesn't say anything about it.
Edit 2: I did the following
sudo mv /usr/lib/liblzma.so /usr/lib/liblzma.so.0
And now pacman works, but it cannot find a single mirror that I have set up, it says "error retrieving file" on everything.
Edit 3: Nevermind, I give up. I'm going to wipe and reformat my computer. This is RIDICULOUS. I hope the same problem doesn't happen to my laptop, what is the *official* way to fix the "package-query: requires pacman<3.5" problem?

Just reinstalled arch onto my main machine and I noticed that, before I had -Syu'd back up to bleeding-edge my pacman was working flawlessly. After an -Syu there is a very noticeable delay (~7sec) between every file transfer. I also noticed this delay BEFORE reinstalling arch on my old configuration. I'm not entirely sure where the difference may come from,
I don't remember pacman being one of the packages being updated in the -Syu.

It might be. What I can't understand though is what is changing between the 2009.02 core iso fresh install and the immediately after -Syu? How would I go about 'fixing' (or at least learning about) a possible DNS problem? I'm sure to keep my /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.conf entries related to hostname in sync and proper but I'm not 100% positive if that's related to DNS.
@Xyne: I was planning on installing powerpill sometime soon, i just wanted to solve this problem first so that powerpill would be at optimum performance.
Edit: !!!! i installed and configured dnsmasq and WOW. Problem solved (at least on my other computer). I'll try it on my main one sometime soon. Thanks for the tip off!

[Solved] Pacman preparation failed
I'm trying a new installation from a USB key and it fails on the Package Selection phase. The error message I get on tty7 is:
Execute(): worker_package_list exit state was 1
More info:
- arch is x86_64
- I'm installing from a USB stick on a laptop that has been running x32 arch for at least a year (it's a core2 cpu)
- I've checked and double-checked the md5sum of the iso and the image on the stick
- I'm using a core iso - no network access
- I select the local core repo when running aif
- I can see all the packages in /repo/core/x86_64/{core,any}
- I've read the aif bash scripts but so far I've been unable to see what the problem might be
I've read all I've found about the subject (there are many threads on this problem), but nothing that describes my exact situation; nothing has helped me. If somebody has any pointers, I'll be grateful!

P.S: I've solved this problem; here's the solution in case anyone else encounters something similar. My drive was already partitioned and formatted, so I was telling aif to leave it alone. After I allowed it to reformat the root partition, the problem went away.

Hi,
I have two questions:
1) Where should the testing repository be added in the pacman config? Right now the order of my repositories is default:

Where in this order would [testing] go? I'm not sure where it should be placed.
2) Is there a way to specifically tell pacman which packages I want to be updated in the testing repository? For example, I do not want Apache to be updated from [testing] but I may want Subversion to be updated from that repository.

How about an EnablePkg= ? That would pretty much solve my problem I believe. Why do you mention makepkg.conf? Doesn't it need to be in pacman.conf? I'm confused...
Adding/Removing stuff from a config file everytime I want to update isn't really something I want to do. I'd rather not use [testing] at all in that case. Gentoo can do this, I was hoping Archlinux could as well.

I'm having problems now with skype and ldconfig.
I think the skype problem will be solved if this problem with ldconfig is solved, because I looked for some answers first to solve my problem and it seems to be something with missing/corrupted lib files.
Every time I try to install something I get these messages and if I run ldconfig too.
Can anyone help me with this?
I'm using Arch with Cinnamon, on a laptop tha has an Optimus NVIDIA card. (I don't know if it's related but...)

Second, did you heed the warning about a working PulseAudio setup?
I did, acctually my PulseAudio is working, I thought it was something related to that, but after reading some of the lib names it seems like it's related to the Qt lib... I don't know, I couldn't find anyone with a problem like that. -
I tried to install wicd but I get error:

[Solved] pacman won't update kernel
Hi, I create a base image that I clone to build from, it has nothing added but 'base-devel', earlier I installed an XFCE install, I went to create another from the same base image, when I install nvidia it told me in both cases that it needed a newer kernel 3.1.4, so I ran
pacman -Syu
. This morning this solves the problem, right now it states that it has nothing to update (it's made from the same image) and nvidia won't install stating it needs that upgrade. I shuffled mirrors around to see if it helped but it didn't. Anyone have an idea of why this is occurring?

[Solved] pacman hangs in step "resolving dependencies"
Hi, Today i tried to update my system with pacman -Syu, however it hangs in the process of searching file conflicts. I read this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179638 tand followed the suggestions, it didn't worked.

Getting to xorg-xrandr package pacman hangs, however i dont think it is related with the xorg-xrandr package since i try to reinstall pacman with:
pacman -S pacman --debug

I have not any NFS or Samba storage mounted or configured, just one local disk. However i have just grown my root partition from 32 to 100 GB, using gparted in livecd since my arch partition became full, so i think this issue has something to do with that.
Any ideas??

Before i grew the partition i had another partition mounted in /var/cache/pacman to hold the pacman packages. I erased it to grow my root partition over it but i forgot to erase the entry in the fstab file, so the system was trying to mount the partition but it didnt exist anymore. The result was a broken mount, that was making pacman hang, since it searched for the files in /var/cache/pacman.

[SOLVED] Pacman wont upgrade any packages
EDIT: I was able to solve my problem by pacman -R yaourt package-query pacman-color, I was then able to update pacman. Since I like yaourt and wanted to keep it I follow the instructions on their page (http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en#get_it). I added their repo to my /etc/pacman.conf and then installed yaourt from pacman and now everything works again like it should.
When I try to upgrade packages I get the following errors:

This is obsolete dependency connected with gobject-introspection support. I think it can be removed without any problems. :)

When I login to update my existing apps, the login window shows the wrong apple id. i cannot change it because it is all grayed out. how do i solve this problem?

Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID. -
This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way --- ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?

ASUS PA279QI uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

after updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google(web ,image,video,map etc),yahoo, Facebook (message,notification,profile,home) and others site are disabled. even I cant log out from different sites cz the log out bar is completely disabled. I tried with Firefox 4;5 and 6, same problem exist . I tried by active all add ons for facebook, same problem exist. If I use internet explorer , I don't find such problem with it.

As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
