[Solved]Partition ends in the final partial cylinder

I am trying to install Arch linux on Virutualbox.
I use GParted LiveCD to resize my partition, when I run cfdisk I receive the following error:

The output of the fdisk -lu is:

I found an old topic(http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33916) on this problem but the solution was
try cfdisk -z /dev/device. However, this will wipe all your partitions.
I would like to keep my partitions as they are. Somebody suggested using testdisk for Windows to repair the bad partitions but I'm not sure of how to use it. Can anybody help me please? Thank you!

Are you still frustrated because of cfdisk which gives you something like this:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk
Here, I'm trying to install archlinux on a pendrive and I get almost the same error when trying to manually format the disk. The only difference is that it mention partition 0 instead of partition 3... I guess there is a bug in the livecd?
I'm having this problem with  archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso.

  • Cfdisk error: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder

I was rearraging some partitions last night.  I have two hard drives, both 1TB.  They are (now) laid out as follows:
    Drive 1:
    - 40GB partition for Windows system
    - 40GB partition for Arch system
    - 920GB partition for backed up documents
    Drive 2:
    - 80GB utility partition
    - 920GB partition for documents
I used fdisk to create the last partition on the first drive (the first two partitions were already in place).  I pretty much just told it to create a 'n'ew, 'p'rimary partition and then accepted the default options in order to get a partition that filled the remainder of the drive.  None of the partitions were in place on the second drive, and I tried using fdisk, but when I tried to create the first partition, it wouldn't allow me to start it at the beginning of the drive (it insisted on making the first partition start at sector 2048 rather than sector 63).  I figured I'd try out cfdisk to see if it would allow me to start the partition on sector 63, and it did.  Got those partitions created just fine using cfdisk.
However, I went back to check my work after I had created all the partitions and hit a source of confusion.  cfdisk spouts out an error whenever I try to view the first drive.  It says partition number 2 is bad and that the "Partition ends in the final partial cylinder".  (Not sure if partition number 2 refers to the second or third partition.  (Is the index zero-based?))  cfdisk has no trouble viewing my second drive, and fdisk has no problem viewing either of them.  I'm a bit of a newbie with regards this sort of thing, so any idea why cfdisk has issues with my first drive?
The drives' layouts, as reported by fdisk:

Maybe I'm not following, but it looks like you want to format (delete) your Ubuntu partitions, but then again you don't want to format anything. You can't just install Arch on top of your Ubuntu partitions and think it will just overwrite Ubuntu by putting Arch in the existing partitions. That'll just create a huge mess.
If your existing /home is on a separate partition, you can just use fdisk (instead of cfdisk) to delete Ubuntu's / partition so that Arch can use that instead. You should just use an installation medium to do the install process, it really is just a matter or removing your existing distro's / and telling Arch to install to that partition while still preserving your Windows 7 partition(s) and existing /home.

  • Bad primary partition 1: Partion ends in the final partial cylinder

i just got a new laptop, dell inspiron 6400.
it's partition table is set up this way:
    1) a 55 meg partition which is supposedly the dell boot utility
    2) a 10 gig recovery partition that contains the completely original HD
    3) a 81 gig partition which has Vista on it
    4) a 2 gig partition for MediaDirect
i used dd to backup the 10 gig partition, and was about to install arch.  cfdisk crapped out with the error message:
"FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder"
ok...i'm stuck.  gparted is able to go in and see all the partitions as fine, and it can delete partition 2, but if i try to format a new volume, it craps out.
now here's the kicker.  if i go into vista and into computer management, i can go there, format the 10gig to ntfs and it works fine.
    any ideas?  thanks.

Does anyone know what else could be done than what is described here???

  • [SOLVED] Partition ends after end-of-disk

When setting up my netbook for a new Arch Linux install, I decided to move my Windows partition from the middle of the hard drive to the end of it to make more room for my extended partition.  I tried to do this with GParted using a Ubuntu live USB.  Something seems to have gone wrong somewhere.

You're totally right.  I thought that the partitions physically existed on the disk in the order that they were labeled numerically, but this isn't the case.  I realized that they were actually sitting in a different order after seeing your comment and trying
    $ parted -l

Of course, after I saw this, I took a closer look at the numbers in the fdisk -l output, and realized how funky things were.
You were right, everything was solved by deleting /dev/sda3.  Thank you so much for your help, TryA!
If it helps anybody in the future with this problem, I did this with fdisk.
    # fdisk /dev/sda
    Command: d
    Partition number (1-4): 3
    Command: w
It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that I needed to write the change after selecting which partition to delete.  =P

    Hello
Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

It could be that the CD player will only playback "Redbook" CD's from the previous position.

Get a copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert your MPG file to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).  In FCE, select one of the setups that uses AIC that best matches your clip (say, 1920x1080i60).  Create a new sequence, then import the converted file.
Note that if your MPG file is actually MPEG2 you will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Component in addition to MPEG Streamclip.
What was the source of the MPG file?  How about if you open it in QuickTime, then do Window > Show Movie Inspector.  Tell us what it says for codec/compression, frame size & frame rate.

Is there any way to overcome this error without repartitioning the disk ?

I agree that there is no obvious error from the data you've provided.
What version of Solaris are you running
    uname -a
Are you using a SCSI disk or a SATA drive?
On Solaris it affect which driver we use.
I've very curious what the geometry stored in the Solaris disk label is.
Would it be possible for you to dump the fdisk partition table
and the Solaris disk labels and vtoc and send them to me.
    dd if=/dev/dsk/c0d0p0 of=/tmp/mbr count=1
    dd if=/dev/dsk/c0d0p2 of=/tmp/pbr count=3

    As a workaround:
Since partition is 82 is a linux swap partition, it should be relatively easy to
shrink that partition by a few cylinders and then run makeswap
    with no loss of information.

Error I’m getting for section titled Notes (PP 45 second video): “End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point.”
The icon that shows error is in top line second from end.  I’m trying to 'end action' that portion of the video by going back to 'menu default'; also tried end action w/ ‘Stop’ and neither work.
I saw a post about checking timeline.  Not sure what I’m looking for there.  I have nothing in Orphanage area.  I also tried building despite Check Project error and it will not build project.  Any suggestions on how to fix: “End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point.”?

Select chapter one on that timelne. Look in the properties panel. Does it have an end action? You do not want an end action on the chapter; just on the timeline itself.
That will not generally prevent a build, however. So you may have other issues.

  • Error message encore cs5 end action can't execute on the final chapter point

Dvd plays great. Exported it as a mpeg 2-dvd,  video only. Audio separate as a .wav. imported video as a timeline, audio as an asset. Video is not transcoded.
But I have a sub menu, with 6 chapter markers. I check the project and I get this: "error message encore cs5 end action can't execute on the final chapter point"
Do I need to make a chapter playlist? Because that gave me a "orphaned playlist" error message.
I selected the last chapter masker and had the end action go to the sub menu.
    Thanks!

Saw a previous thread where bill hunt said it ignore it and try to burn a copy.

  • End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point

I will be referring to this video:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-encore-cs4/creating-an-event-dvd/
I followed this exactly, except for the slide show (and I made a DVD instead of flash), but when I checked the project, I get the error message "End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point".
I don't understand.  I did not change any end points except for the one specified in this tutorial.  (About the Max footage for the very beginning, before the menu).  If anything was added, it was Adobe's doing.
I do notice that in 00:04 in the tutorial, there's a downward arrow on the very end of the timeline.  My timeline does not have this.  How was this done?
In the Encore software, after the timeline is loaded, there is no arrow at the very end.  Mine doesn't have that either.
I'm finding Adobe/Encore's way of making menus rather difficult.  With Pinnacle Studios (at least through 8-12), making menus was easy, and it set up the chapters for you.  Why can't there be an automated menu feature in Encore?
    Anyway, here's my project:
Main time line has 9 chapters. When clicking on their chapter points, all say End Action: not set.
When I click on the white bar above the lite purple footage of the time line, where the chapter point's bottom rest, it says, End Action: Not Set AND Menu Remote: Return to Last Menu.
All 9 chapter points are white.
In the flowcart, there is the DVD icon --> my few seconds opening credits --> menu that has a Play All and Scene Selection button
Play All goes to first chapter of video
Scene Selection (submenu #1) goes to 6 scenes, a next, previous, main menu.  All seem to be linked properly.
Scene Selection for scenes 7-9 are in the #2 submenu.  Has a previous button and a main menu button.   All seem to be linked properly.
Can anyone offer any advice?  Help?  I need to make this DVD and two others by the end of the week!
If you need more information, please let me know that too.

If I make a change in the timeline in Premiere, will that new change be reflected in the timeline of Encore?
If you used Adobe Dynamic Link, then yes, the Timeline will be updated. If you did not, then you will need to Export again, then Import into Encore. Watch out if you have already Transcoded, etc., and I'd name the new Timeline Export differently, Import that, use Replace Asset. When a Project is very new, and nothing much has been done, it will not be so picky. After a couple of links, etc., it gets VERY picky, and Replace Asset will help.
Is there a way to reload the project without having to redo all the menus and links?
If you did a Save_As, or still have your original Project, i.e. you started a completely new Project with a unique name, you can go back to the original.
    Hope that helps,
