[SOLVED] root gets desktop environment, user gets bare-bones window ma

Installed everything, following (as best I could) step-by-step instructions in beginners guide...
Everything works ok, except it was all installed by myself as 'root', and I want to start day-to-day operation as a user called 'piers'.
When 'root' logs in and invokes startx, desktop environment fires up.
When 'piers' logs in and invokes startx, all I get is the rudimentary windows-manager screen of three xorg windows, as installed earlier in the proceedings for testing purposes...
How does 'piers' get to see the desktop?  I'm sorry, I must be missing something terribly obvious!
TIA!

Thanks SS4 and karol, you're very kind; that seems to have done the trick.
For some reason, the 'piers' startx only gets the Gnome fallback, where 'root' gets full service, but I had an idea I hadn't gone the full distance yet with my display driver, which is what Gnome tells me is deficient.  I'll try to do battle with that next!
Thanks again.

  • Awesome desktop environment?

Is there any desktop environment that encorporates the awesome window manager? Or a tiling window manager?

The Awesome documentation also doesn't seem to offer a way of integrating with PolicyKit. It would take a lot of work figuring it out by myself when I have zero knowledge of policykit, and little documentation from Awesome itself.
There's actually an example on the awesome wiki.
What I do is different, though:
    local lock = "slimlock"
    local ck = "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=\"org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit\" "
    .. "/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Manager org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager."
    local suspend = "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=\"org.freedesktop.UPower\" "
    .. "/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend"
    local logoutmenu = {
    { "Shutdown", ck .. "Stop", freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-shutdown' }) },
    { "Reboot", ck .. "Restart", freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'gtk-refresh' }) },
    { "Suspend", suspend, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'media-playback-pause' }) },
    { "Lock screen", lock, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-lock-screen' }) },
    { "Log out", awesome.quit, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-log-out' }) },
Then just add logoutmenu to your myawesomemenu table, and replace lock with whatever screenlocker you use. Or remove the "Lock screen" entry from the table if you don't use one.
If you don't have awesome-freedesktop-git installed, just remove the freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon parts. I just like having icons on everything.
    Screenshot: http://ompldr.org/tOTJ0Ng
This is the exact tutorial that I found on the wiki for implementing a shutdown menu. I may be wrong though, but I assumed that it needed a password to be used since it uses gksu.
Sorry everyone, I just went and assumed doing it with policykit would be difficult, since there aren't any tutorials for it. I shall look into it by myself.

  • I just want to get into the desktop environment!

After recently installing Arch Linux0.7.2 , I am stuck at this "myhost login" screen. I type in root, but all it does is log me into root.
I've googled this issue as "my host login arch linux help" to no avail.
I've added users and passwds for users but am unable to get desktop access.
Is there a command I must know in order to access the desktop environment? Perhaps similar to 'startx' as it is in DamnSmallLinux.I cannot last much longer in this DOS environment where i seem only to be chasing my tail!!!

magistrate wrote:I come with peace to the arch forum.
And in peace we have greeted you. Arch linux is what you make of it. If you need to install a desktop environment than do it.
Most guys prefer only Window Managers. Window manager just manages windows so you just add software you need to have a functional environment. No programs you will never use, just the ones you need.
Most of us like this way.
Arch linux is all about choices...that's why there isn't a complete desktop environment provided by install disks. Not anybody need it. If you need it just install it.
Other guys have provided you the links to information you need. But, if you do not want to learn and get your hands dirty than you should probably choose Ubuntu.
Ubuntu install provides you a functional desktop environment. Most choices are made for you by Ubuntu developers and the desktop environment you obtain is ready and functional.
But chances are that still in Ubuntu linux, sometimes, you will have to read a wiki to make things work.  So RTFM is a tip you could get also in Ubuntu forum.
And trust me, nobody cares if you choose Windows ME over Arch linux. It's your system, it's your choice.
If you have real problems that cannot be solved by searching on wiki than ask and plenty of Arch users will try to help you for free.

  • What licenses do I need to get a virtual desktop environment up and running?

I’m trying to figure out what licenses I need to get a full Windows Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) up and running with the Remote Desktop Service (RDS) roles.
I have Win.Server 2012 running Hyper-V, which has about 10 different virtual machines (VM) with either Win.7 or Win.8 installed on it. These VMs will act as virtual desktops (VD) for about 200 people to remotely access and use.
My question is, what licenses do I need to support this scenario?
So far, I’m planning to purchase a few Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with 10 Client Access Licenses ( $1414.19 each). I’m assuming that’s 1 license for the server and 10 Client Access Licenses (CAL) for users who will access the VDs. I’m also planning
to buy about 200 RDS CALs ($149 each) for the rest of the users to access the VDs. Do I need to buy additional licenses for each VM image I create (the 10 images I mentioned earlier)? These VMs are in a pooled virtual desktop collection, so they reset themselves
when users disconnect from them. If I have personal desktop collections which give unique desktops to each user and saves their settings, will my license have to change if I have that too?
At first I thought just buying the RDS CALs will allow me to install windows where ever I want, how many times I want and all I have to worry about is paying for the client access, but do I need to pay for the OS as well? So essentially I’m doubling the
    license?
A side question not really related is, if I have Windows Thin PC, (which was said to come free if I have SA with another product)  and bought the Windows Server license, does that come with SA and I can install Windows Thin PC as many times as I want
on which ever desktop I have that will connect to this VDI system?

The 10 server licenses are fine, but they don't help you with VDI or remote desktops. I you want to install the Remote Desktop Session Host (formerly known as Terminal Server) role on all your servers und provide remote desktops for your 200 users, 200 RDS
CALs are the right choice (per user or per device).
But if your 200 users have access to virtual desktops, you need 200 VDI licenses. It doesn't matter if you only have 10 virtual desktops if potentially all your 200 users have access to them. VDI licensing is not based on a concurrent model, so every client
that can connect to a VM needs its own license. If Windows 8 Enterprise with SA is on all your client devices, you're set because SA gives users access rights to up to 4 Win8 or Win7 VMs concurrently (local or remote). In addition
it gives them a so-called companion subscription license for personally owned, non-primary devices.
For those primary corporate devices that are without SA, you'll need to purchase a single VDA license for each device that connects to any number of your Win7 or Win8 VMs. The same applies to personally owned devices of users who don't have a primary
corporate device with SA. In other words, BYOD is supported if your primary device is under SA.
For neither VDI/SA nor VDA it does matter if users are connecting to different VM images or only one. Typically, they cannot connect to more than 4 VMs at the same time in order to stay within the licensing limits.

    fi
    # :~ EOF
This is the thing: after choosing "joelDE" in slim sessions it shows a black screen and rerun slim...
    1.- Doesn't SLim run x11?
2.- If not, how do I call it?
    Thanks!

Try moving the metacity line in joelDE to the end of the file and remove the last '&':
    #!/bin/bash
    # mi propio entorno
    bash $HOME/.fehbg &
    xscreensaver -no-splash &
    (sleep 1s && compton --config $HOME/.config/compton.conf -b) &
    (sleep 1s && wbar) &
    sleep 1s && metacity --replace
With startx, and I think that this is true for SLiM as well, your X session will last as long as your ~/.xinitrc (or, I think more technically, the exec $whatever that may be at the end of the file).  So if everything in ~/.xinitrc forks (or in your case, your joelDE script), that script will complete immediately, and the X session will exit with it.

how to get bar graph in word in labwindow/CVI ?

    ashwinic9,
spawning your question over more and more threads (the present one, this one and this other one) won't give you a faster answer; instead, it will irritate forum users!
Especially if you have at your disposal a fast way to perform a test. I pointed you some days ago to word report example, that writes a table to a word document: did you tried changing the graph into a bar graph and generating the report? I have done it for you and the result is OK, as you can see in the attached document.
Now, since the example works well, there must be something in your particular situation that prevents the graph to be shown; that is: you must add some more data on your actual problem and maybe a small example that exposes the problem.
But please: keep active only this discussion and let the other threads die!
Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • Do I need to reinstall desktop environment for each user?

    Hello,
I have installed xwindows and the i3 desktop environment on my root account by mistake.  I created a user account and logged into it, but I could not start a xwindows because it wasn't installed on that account.  Do I need to reinstall everything on the new user or is there a way to copy everything over?
    Thanks

    offtopic @Xyne
What I am still wondering is if using xorg wrap is a hack as opposed to some "cleaner" systemd solution.
Well, simply not using Xwrapper.config, then Xorg will handle this on it's own (see man page extract below). I don't think Openbox has problems with this, so I think the problems you had would have to be looked at separately. But maybe better on their own topic...
    'man Xorg.wrap'
By default Xorg.wrap will autodetect if root rights are necessary, and if
not it will drop its elevated rights before starting the real X server. By
default Xorg.wrap will only allow executing the real X server from login
    sessions on a physical console.
When auto-detecting the wrapper will drop rights if kms graphics are avail‐
able and not drop them if no kms graphics are detected. If a system has
multiple graphics cards and some are not kms capable auto-detection may
fail, in this case manual configuration should be used.
You're a bit late on that one

added that line to xinitrc, logged out and in and the bar starts now, and displays this
The uppercase roman numerals should be on my second monitor, which is on the right(not pictured). The bar extends the whole way across both monitors, which it should, but as I said the uppercase numbers should be on the righthand monitor, and the current window title should be in the middle of each monitor(or just the one with an active/selected window, I am not sure which but I know it shouldn't be stretched across both).
Also, if I try to run the dzen2 part of the case instance, I get
    [jordan@jordanpc-linux ~]$ panel dzen2
/home/jordan/scripts/panel: line 6: : No such file or directory
/home/jordan/scripts/panel: line 7: : No such file or directory
cat: : No such file or directory
dzen: error, cannot allocate color ''
Making it the default within the file causes bspwm to start without a bar at all. I don't really mind whether I end up using bar or dzen2, as long as one works. I would however appreciate fixing both so I can learn why they aren't working.

  • [SOLVED] X server and desktop environment?

ok I have 2 Q now I've been studding this quite a long time
    well 1. Q
if I want to have a desktop I have to install X server and Desktop environment?
    well2. Q
    according to this article:
    http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA
I'd ask do I have to create a new file or is this an old topic for an old X server?
as I have now like this:
    /etc/X11/
    /twm
    system.twmrc
    /xinit
    xinitrc
    xserverrc
    /xorg.conf.d
    10-evdev.conf
    10-monitor.conf
    10-quirks.conf

    2.
    it's sad:
    X11 Configuration
If you find yourself needing to tell X11 to use the intel driver, set Driver to "intel" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf as in the example below,
    File: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Intel Video Card"
    Driver "intel"
    EndSection
but I don't have it there so... do I need to create a new file or do I get this 4 lines in to
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf
Depends what works for you. You should do away with xorg.conf, but some setups are easier to pull off with it.
How about creating a new file named 20-intel.conf, just as you do with nvidia?

  • Unable to login to Java Desktop Environment with new user

    Hi
I have created a new user in my Solaris10 x86 using the command
    #useradd nama
I added the passwd to the user, using passwd. But when i am trying to login through GUI(Java Desktop Environment) i am unable to login.
After giving username and password , again its showing the login screen itself.
But i am able to login with root permissions.
    Could anyone help me .
    Thanks inadvance.

use this workaround, as root edit /etc/auto_home and /etc/auto_master and comment out all the configuration and reboot the machine. then use useradd utility to add your normal users.
    # useradd -d /export/home/user1 -s /usr/bin/bash -m user1

  • I keep getting the message, "Windows cannot find 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get it when I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon.

I've just installed Firefox on my laptop and keep getting the message, "Windows cannot find 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get this message whenever I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon. I've never gotten it to work and even uninstalled it and then redownloaded it and still cannot get it to open. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Are you installing from the official site? http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
If you use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to check that path, is the Mozilla Firefox folder there? That is the normal installation location, but I think it's worth checking.
If the folder isn't there or firefox.exe is not in it, I wonder whether some other software might be interfering. You might want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:

Read and follow the Bootcamp Installation instructions that you were offered to view when you ran Bootcamp Assistant.
Run Bootcamp Assistant again and select the option to download the Bootcamp Support software. Follow the instructions. Then boot into Windows and install the Windows Support software you downloaded and saved.
