[Solved] Scary dd behavior: dd finishing before beginning?

Note: There isn't really a solution however the behavior I expected has returned and this event hasn't returned since nor have I been able to reproduce this in an attempt to find out why it happened in the first place. There are suggestions offered here in other posts and I don't dismiss them entirely. I have a suspicion about my thumbdrive though as there have been a few occasions that it never registered as a device and had to be plugged back in to be seen when others I own (thumbdrives) have worked just fine(regardless of partition types and formats etc.). It may be related to the "storage controller" more specificlly as I've seen a few flash memory devices act unpredictable or dead when it malfunctions (not very common but I've handled a lot of these in all conditions. and they usually just die but a few have caused other odd behavior.). But agin I'm not sure myself. It's really just a guess.
Ok so I've used dd for a while and am quite familiar with what it can be used for, however, this is something I've never seen. Never. So the title is exactly the best description I can give. In my shell I ran dd to write the newest arch linux install medium as I was preparing to set another laptop up with Arch and as soon as I executed the command it paused 4-5 seconds the returned with a 0 exit status yet nothing lit up on my thumb-drive. A few seconds later, AFTER dd acted as if it had finished my machine began writing data to the thumb-drive (mine is a sandisk cruzer that blinks fast when being written to.) obviously and just as I was used to seeing. It finished around the time I would have expected. Is this normal? Here was the terminal output and as You can notice dd reports the time it finished in and how fast it believes it wrote to the device. I know my flash-drive has a 4-5Mb/s write speed..not 90+Mb/s...

Any Ideas... That leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable using dd now.

WonderWoofy wrote:@Thme, did you read the post from rwd above your last one?  It is most certainly not dd that has changed, but rather something within your operting system.  As dd does not handle the buffering itself.
sorry I got away from my computer and had to run some errands... Forgot to post my response when I left out...
Also I did it with another image of a different boot.iso and this didn't happen again... hmm about to test it again with the arch image out fo curiousity. Nope now I can't duplicate the event... This is what it had always done before. Two runs with two different images on the same device and nope it did just as I've expected it to before.

Notice the numbers in my first post.... that was the same flash drive. and here it was again but now I can't repeat the first results... look again here's the odd one. same image same device. My machine hadn't rebooted since then either. hell the output is still there in my other console... if only dd kept a log...

It's like this was a fluke or something. Nothing has changed since this morning. rwd's point made some sense but again how am I getting the results I've always expected now. I'll mark this solved in a day in hopes another might offer a possible explanation since it really isn't a problem now. Just a mystery to me...

  • Code to wait until one event is finished before starting another?

    Hi all,
    Coding isn't my strong point but I have a basic understanding of how functions etc work.
    I've been learning about referencing symbol timelines with the awesome tutorial from the Adobe Blog, included below.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/edge/2012/07/18/tutorial-leveraging-independent-symbol-timelines/
    I've been able to get my symbol to play from a certain part of it's timeline depending on whether the mouse is rolling in or out but now I'm a little bit stuck.
    The mouseover event triggers an animation and the mouseout triggers another animation that starts from the same frame that the mouseover animation ends with.
    The problem is this. If I move the mouse quickly over the buttons, the first animation will play halfway through and when the mouseout triggers the second animation, the first animation will seemingly "skip" to the ending and move straight to the first frame of the second animation.
    I know enough to code it so that the second animation will check if the first animation is still playing before starting by using an else/if statement. Using this method I only know how to skip the second animation if the first is playing but that isn't really what I'm looking to do.
    Here comes the question; can anyone explain to me how to create a wait loop in Edge Animate?
    When I say wait loop, I am talking about code that will check a variable and perform an action if the variable is true OR loop back to the start of the function if the variable is false (to check the variable again).
    The behavior I am trying to achieve is somewhat like queuing the second animation so that it will "wait" until the first animation is played before beginning the second animation.
    Any ideas?

    Ok Mr Doon,
    Clearly, I read to quickly
    The behavior I am trying to achieve is somewhat like queuing the second animation so that it will "wait" until the first animation is played before beginning the second animation.
    So, say the anima symbol is a 2s animation and has autoPlay set to false. There are two instances anima-1 and anima-2 on stage.
    The event handler anima-1.mouseover starts the first animation :
    We select Stage in the code panel and place before the first Symbol.bind… the declaration for two symbol (stage) variables :
    Inside the anima timeline, click the top left bullet+curly brackets icon and select complete : when the animation is complete, we set the boolean variable (what is not very clean here is that this is done for the two instances anima-1 and anima-2) :
    The event handler anima-2.mouseover starts the wait loop, by calling a function defined at the stage level :
    More precisely, the function is defined in the document.compositionready handler. It defines (and stores in variable waitLoop in order to be able to remove when finished) an interval, that is the repeated call, every 10 ms, of an inner anonymous function.
    The latter simply tests the boolean and when its true
    - starts the second animation ;
    - clears the interval.
    You can download the example here : https://www.box.com/s/6yxjfmrqd0b5zbhmd3lx
    You can hover over the left rounded rectangle, and immediately after over the second one. Subsequent rollovers are not handled, but it gives you a possible logic to adapt to your particuliar problem (that I still do not understand completely : it's hard without seeing).

  • Why does my Script finish before Toast Ejects my Disk?

    Hi (Noobie),
    I'm attempting to write an Applescript for burning DVD's in Toast.
    My problem is that the Applescript finishes before the DVD is burned (ejected).
    This is what I have:
    tell application "Toast 10 Titanium"
    open thefile
    set toast_project to current disc
    add to toast_project items filesto_add1
    delay 3
    add to toast_project items filesto_add2
    delay 3
    write toast_project with asynchronous completion without asking
    delay 3
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke return
    try
    tell application "Toast 10 Titanium" to quit without saving
    end try
    end tell
    end tell
    activate
    display dialog "Finshed successfully"
    . . . . . so how can I make sure my script waits for toast to finish (ie: Disk is ejected) before showing me the dialog window?
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Well, I don't know… On your computer, is “disk 2” the disk you are burning or do you have some other disks connected? To get more information about your disks, you might type:
    *tell application "Finder" to return properties of disks*
    in the Script Editor window.
    Or maybe you should just have used "current disc" (as before) inside the tell block.
    Or maybe you should refer to the disk by its name instead of its index.
    Or maybe you might try the following version of your script, where the new lines are in bold:
    --BEGINNING OF SCRIPT
    *tell application "Finder" to set theCurrentDisk to disk 2* -- or any other index
    tell application "Toast 10 Titanium"
    open thefile
    set toast_project to current disc
    add to toast_project items filesto_add1
    delay 3
    add to toast_project items filesto_add2
    delay 3
    write toast_project with asynchronous completion without asking
    delay 3
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke return
    try
    tell application "Toast 10 Titanium" to quit without saving
    end try
    end tell
    end tell
    *repeat while theCurrentDisk exists* -- just wait
    *end repeat*
    activate
    display dialog "Finished successfully"
    --END OF SCRIPT

  • BEFORE BEGINNING APPLETS check the 20.7 item checklist ! ! !

    Dear People,
    My thanks to Arthur Ore, Dr. Nichols Rich Wilkman and all the
    tremendous Professionals who are a guiding light on the path of
    APPLETS ! Here is the 20.7 Item Checklist
    20.7 Item Checklist before Beginning Applets
    1)     Did you download the latest j2re and plugin from:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/install-windows.html#4
    2) Did you go to the Windows Explorer and do
    Tools
    Internet Options
    Advanced tab
    under Java(Sun)
    check "use Java2v1.4.1_01 for
    app tag removed
    <!--- applet>"
    under Microsoft VM
    check "Java console enabled"
    (then restart your computer)
    3) If you are using a Windows operating system
    Did you go to:
    Start
    Settings
    Control Panel
    (you should see a cup of coffee icon)
    ( if you don't see a cup of coffee icon
    you did not download the java plug-in )
    on the coffee cup icon:
    (Java Plug-in Control Panel) - double click
    under "Basic"
    Java Console
    enable "Show Console" radio button
    click "Apply"
    4) Is your javacompile.bat file correct ? One correct one is:
    rem set my Command.com to use the java path
    echo off
    cls
    PATH=C:\j2sdk1.4.0_01;C:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.0_01\lib;
    C:\WINDOWS\jbproject\objectdraw.jar
    javac -classpath C:\WINDOWS\jbproject\objectdraw.jar;C:\WINDOWS\
    jbproject %1
    5) Check your path is ok by going to
    http://www.computer-logic.net/daniel/jdbc_access
    if you can see the database information on the screen then
    your path settings are ok !
    6) Test that your browser has been enabled to do applets
    by looking at an applet that works already for example:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/
    (you should see ticker tape news going across the screen)
    7) Did you download the latest version of the external library
    if you are using one ?
    8) use the DOS command for example
    C:\> :-dir MakeBox.class
    to verify that the date and time shown against it correspond to
    when you last compiled the class.
    If they don't correspond re-compile the class AND re-run the dir
    command again. If the date and time have not changed, then you
    are not compiling into the correct directory.
    9) If you are using an external library, did you add this
    information to your PATH and classpath in the
    javacompile.bat file ? Did you add the archive attribute
    to your Class_Name.html file ?
    10) is your Class_Name.java file without errors ?
    for example:
    import objectdraw.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    public class MakeBox extends WindowController
    public void begin()
    public void onMousePress(Location point)
    new FilledRect(30,150,30,20,canvas);
    11) is your Class_Name.html file without errors and complete ?
    for example:
    <html>
    <head>
    <title> Make Box
    </title>
    <body>
    <applet
    archive = "objectdraw.jar"
    codeBase = "."
    code = "MakeBox.class" width = 300 height = 200 >
    </applet>
    <!--- --->
    </body>
    </html>
    12) Are your Class_Name.java file and your CLass_Name.html file
    and your javacompile.bat (which contains your PATH and
    classpath information) all in the same directory ?
    13) Did you do the steps correctly to execute your applet?
    a)
    at Dos prompt
    change directory ( cd) to the one where the three files
    are located for example
    C:\ cd C:\WINDOWS\jbproject
    b) compile your Class_Name.java file for example:
    C:\WINDOWS\jbproject> javacompile Class_Name.java
    c) (you know it compiled correctly if it comes back with
    nothing) but:
    C:\WINDOWS\jbproject
    d) If no error messages come back you have no errors
    in the Class_Name.java file and a Class_Name.class
    file was created so you can proceed to:
    e) open Windows Explorer click :
    File
    Open
    Browse
    (find your Class_Name.html file (should have a little "e" next to it )
    double click
    Now you see the applet in Windows Explorer ! ! !
    ( you might want to try to open it in another browser also)
    14) Remember that the area of the Applet is
    not the full screen of the html page. If you hold down the control key
    and then click the refresh button, momentarily, you should see a gray
    rectangle appear (as though you had an error with your applet).
    You have to be inside the area where the gray rectangle was to be
    in the applet area.
    15) If you are using an external library make sure that one of the
    classes in the class library extends the Applet class, if you are
    not saying public class Class_Name extends Applet
    in your coding.
    16) a). Usually all the other classes that your class relies on are
    put into a jar file(s) and referenced in the Applet tag.
    b) Usually you put your actual applet class in the jar file as well.
    c) You can reference more than one jar file in the Applet tag.
    17) You also have to decide whether the classes you've used require
    a plug-in, in which case you have to make the html more complicated
    so that it does an auto install of the plug-in to the users PC. You
    really need to decide this before you write any code
    18) You also need to decide whether your jar file(s) needs digitally
    signing. This depends on the type of program that you have written.
    You need to do this so that you program has the right security levels to access files or
    other resources on the PC.
    It can be a bit of a nightmare working out how to
    sign things, especially when you don't want to pay out for a digital
    certificate when you are just testing. You should be OK when as in
    your case, the Applet is loaded from the same machine that it is
    running on.
    19) Finally you then have to deploy everything to a web server
    and this means that you definitely have to take into account the
    security rules of applets.
    20) If you want a better and more formulated description,
    take another look at
    http://www.formlessvoid.com/jc/index
    For a quick method to test programs Applets are great.
    What you've learned so far will really only allow you to use Applets
    as a testing tool for running programs.
    Which is great, but don't go away with the idea that basically
    you've cracked Applets. You've cracked one very useful part of using
    Applets,
    I suspect that other people would argue that you
    could have done the programs equally as well via an application.

  • JButton event requires code to finish before updating JTable

    Hi everyone,
    I need some help with Java. I've been creating my first Java app and hit a wall where cannot find a solution on Google.
    I have a JFrame with a button called "Start".  The code behind the "Start" button triggers a function (startwork() ) that traverses through log files and then inserts rows into my JTable.  If I call the startwork() function from the Start button action performed event, then when it inserts the rows to the JTable it is not immediately shown... the code has to finish before the JTable is refreshed.  However, if I run the startwork() function as soon as the JFrame is displayed (from the main() function) then I can see the Jtable being populated dynamically as it is inserting the rows.
    Can someone explain how to allow the user to click on the START button and yet behave correctly to where the JTable is updated properly so that I can see the rows being inserted as it progresses.
    Thank you!

    Thank you for the reply. However, I find it strange that I need to write a SwingWorker sub-class for every button in my GUI that wishes to do some meaningful work.  No other programming language that I have used does this. In Visual Basic, we simply add a function in the event handler and that is it.  It seems overkill to write a SwingWorker class to basically create another thread that runs some code. I don't see why my GUI has to completely freeze just because I run code in an event.

    Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the broken tracks from your iTunes library, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
    If you don't see them straight away it may help to close and restart iTunes.
    While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked.
    If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • How do i get my panorama picture to take without it finishing before I'm done?

    I'm trying to take a panoramic picture but every time I start the camera will finish the picture before I can even turn slightly. I don't even see directions to "slow down" or move it just files the first frame as though I were finished. Any tips?

    From the iPhone User Manual:
    Take a panorama photo (iPhone 4S or later): Tap Options, then tap Panorama. Point iPhone where you want to start, then tap . Pan slowly in the direction of the arrow, holding iPhone steady. Try to keep the arrow directly on top of the horizontal line. When you finish, tap Done.
    • Reverse the panning direction: Tap the arrow.

  • Quiz slide waits for Audio to finish before proceeding to next question

    Hi guys, hope you can help. I have 5 questions with audio inside narrating the question and the answer in selection. Once you you have chosend your answer then click submit button..it waits until the audio finishes then proceeds to the next question.
    hope you can help
    Thank you

    Having this action on Slide Exit of the Quiz Results slide may not work if the user clicks a button there to Review Quiz because that will mean that the last frame of the Quiz Results slide doesn't get played.
    There is an internal Captivate system variable that gets set on each question slide when it's in Review Mode, but I don't think you can read this variable via Advanced Actions.  If you could read it, you could check it and then trigger the mute action on Slide Enter of each question slide.
    UPDATE: Just thought of another possible workaround.  There's a system variable called cpInfoPrevSlide that records the last slide you visited before the current one.  You could use this in a conditional action to trigger cpCmndMute.  When the user clicks Review Quiz on the Quiz Results slide it will take them back to the first scoring object in the Quiz Scope. OnSlideEnter of this slide you need to check whether or not cpInfoPrevSlide is the Quiz Results slide, and if it is, set cpCmndMute to 1.  That should turn off the audio on the slides from then on.
    For instruction audio on the Quiz Results slide I prefer to have the audio attached to a rollover caption.  That way, the user only gets the audio if they explicitly roll over the HELP button (or whatever you call it).

  • Installer halts before beginning installation

    I am running 10.5.4 on a MacBook Pro. I've never had this problem until last night:
    I noticed that Quicktime 7.5.5 was available via Software Update for installation. I did so, and it worked fine, as it usually has.
    Later, iTunes 8 and Front Row updates were available. I proceeded with Software Update. It downloaded the programs successfully. I clicked through and agreed to all the Permission screens, again with no problem.
    The install button then glows blue, and I click it. It grays for a few minutes, but does NOT proceed to the Administrative screen that allows me to type in my password for the install. Nothing. It just sits there on the "install" screen. NO error message of any kind, just no progress.
    I've scanned everything here I could, even problems that sound similar. To date I've tried:
    1 - Logging out of my account and back in. No effect.
    2 - Shutting down and restarting. No effect.
    3 - Downloading the updates individually. No effect.
    4 - Repairing permissions via Disk Utility and restarting. No effect.
    5 - Making sure my network connections are solid. No Internet Sharing in NETWORKS, no attempt to use a wireless connection for downloading. (the updates have always downloaded correctly and fully).
    6 - Booting in safe mode. No effect.
    In my eyes, the programs ARE downloading correctly. It doesn't seem to be a Software Update issue. They downloads are ready to install, but the INSTALLER program does not proceed. It just sits.
    Is there an Installer preference that needs deleted?
    Again, this has never happened to me before. It just began after installing Quicktime 7.5.5.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen halfway through boot before login screen appears

    I originally installed my Arch Linux 64 system on a quad core intel cpu with 4GB RAM and a Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card. Arch is installed on 2 500 GB HDD running on software RAID and LVM. A few months ago I decided I wanted to upgrade my machine to an i7-2600K with 8 GB RAM and a Nvidia 580 GTX graphics card. Since I was using pure software RAID I knew that I could just reuse my installation. So I popped in the drives into the new machine and glory glory Arch booted just fine. One thing I notied though and this has been bothered me since then. On my old machine I could see the whole boot process from start to finish. On my new machine I only see the first few seconds and then a black screen for few seconds and then I get the login screen (KDM in my case). Now I'm running a pure systemd system and I can see the boot process until
    [ok]     started loading random ...
    and then the black screen sets in. Why does this happen? Why can't see if udev, samba etc. start correctly anymore?

  • [Solved] Wait for external usb disk before mounting partition

    Hello,
    I have a fresh setup where 3 btrfs subvolumes are supposed to be mounted on /var /home and /opt. Those subvolumes are on an external usb drive (root fs is on a sd card).
    During boot, systemd tries to mount /var first but encounter "var not empty, mounting anyway" (probably due to several boot attempts) and then "special device uUID=12f15a3e-cf5c-4bc2-9475-6b4686a30f90 does not exist" where 12f15a3e-cf5c-4bc2-9475-6b4686a30f90 is the correct id of the drive.
    From journactl extract it seems that usb drive is not ready yet when /var is being mounted.
    Is there a way to make systemd wait for "the disk is ready" before trying to mount /var ?
    Information:
    - mounting /var in rescue mode works perfectly (mount -o subvol=var /dev/sda /var)
    - device is a raspberry but I think it has no link to the issue (except maybe being slow to send power to usb)
    - the usb drive is behind a 4 port usb hub (externally powered)
    - the usb drive indeed take some time to be powered up
    - /home and /opt are mounted in rescue mode automatically a few seconds later

    Thanks for your reply.
    I don't see any btrfs subvolume information in /dev.

  • Recording finishes before the end of the programme

    Recently each programme I record finishes 3-4 minutes early, which is a really pain. At first it was only a couple of programmes now its doing it each time. I don't see anywhere in the settings to correct the issue. Any ideas?

    As this is controlled by the EPG it sounds like an issue with the channel you are recording
    Can you tell us which channel and programmes ?
