I just purchased a Seagate Slim portable drive for backing up.  I just did my first backup and now I forgot how to eject when finished before I unplug

I just purchased a Seagate Slim portable drive for backing up my mac.  Used it the first time today.  Now I forgot how to safely eject it manually when it is/was finished backing up.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu, select it, and press the Command and E keys.

I just did the recent upgrade and now I keep getting an error message when I try to open a book on my Kindle app, I have deregistered the app and reloaded and the same thing happens, does anyone know how to fix?

You are seeing the message because the new AirPort Extreme has some specific System Requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in Snow Leopard may or may not work correctly with the new Extreme for all functions. As long as things are working OK for now, you can probably leave them "as is" and wait for another Mavericks update to fix some issues before you "upgrade".
If you have an iPhone or iPad, you could use that to administer any settings changes on the new Extreme.

  • Just did a software update and now my mac won't boot

On Monday I did my Apple update, and when I tried to reboot after the update I was greeted with a circle with a line through it. I still get the moving circle on the bottom, but it never boots.
I do not have my original install disc, but I was able to use another G4 install disc to repair disk permissions and repair the disc. After doing so, I still have the same issue.
Any ideas would be really helpful. Thanks

Since Disk Utility can see your drive that is at least a good thing. I am just trying to establish where you stand on booting. Normally if you can boot but experience problems then you can try Disk Utility to repair the drive, which obviously doesn't work in your case. Next is Safe mode which starts up pretty much normally but bypasses some things, and that too is not working. Single User Mode takes you to a text presentation boot stage.
Once one starts with the stronger medicine it is a good idea to back up your data files at least in case the things you do make the drive worse. Booting into TDM makes your computer act like a giant external hard drive and gives you the chance to copy off those files, assuming your friend has the room on her computer. Then you're more at liberty to experiment with different things to get your computer up and working again. If nothing works you always have the option of reinstalling OSX. You might consider an archive and install, or if you can copy your files off elsewhere just reformat the drive and do a clean install and rebuild everything.
It may be a case where you may have to buy a utility like Diskwarrior which does things like Disk Utility repair but much more. Or if Diskwarrior doesn't work and you do need your files you may have to let a program like Data Rescue II have a go at recovering the files (but will need an empty harddrive at least the size of the data on your computer).
At this stage you might also start looking at external bootable hard drives, both because it might come in handy now and also because you'll be able to backup your computer in the future in case of a repeat occurrence.

  • Just did a software update and now iTunes or other Mac accessories won't work?

I did a software update for my Macbook and now iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb won't work. I keep getting the iTunes quit unexpectedly thing and it sends the report to Apple. Is there anything I can do to fix this???

Download the 10.6.8 combo release from the Apple download site. Use Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to repair permissions, then apply the combo release, then repair permissions again. That sometimes fixes odd system errors after a Software Update.

My brother and i both just bought iphones and want to know how we can both have one itunes account and share our music.  our phones are on the same plan and i am paying for the bill. so my question is is this possible?

Yes. It is possible. Just sign in to your Apple ID on both of your iPhones in the App Store.

  • I recently moved my iTunes folder to a portable drive to make space on my macbook pro with Mavericks, and now the space is still taken up by back ups? any help to clear this space up would be greatly appreciated! Oh btw, macbook pro backs up to time caps

Im trying to free up some of the space on my macbook pro, its been filled up with itunes hd movies, so i purchased a 1TB portable hard drive and moved all my itunes files to it to free up some space. When i went into about this mac and checked storage, it says i have over 400GB's of back ups. I back up everyday through time machine to my time capsule, not sure what to do, any help is much appreciated! thanks

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself, nor should you disable them or Time Machine.

  • I am having a hard purchasing a itune it says I need to verify account i did that several times and now it won't work still

HelloI went to purchase an itune and it would not work credit card is on the account

The problem is probably the lan cable connection. I'd recommend connecting both via Firewire, if your old machine has a FW 800 connection only need a Firewire 800 cable. If your old machine uses FW then you need a cable like
    http://www.amazon.com/Firewire-800-IEEE-1394B-Cable/dp/B0027DPM1U/ref=sr_1_3?ie= UTF8&qid=1304893201&sr=8-3
To be honest I'm not sure why people have trouble using the lan connection but that seems to have more problems than any other type of connection. If you used a bootable clone or Time Machine on your old machine for backup you can also start over and migrate from the backup. Pondini's Setup Assistant tips will provide all the information you need on how to do it, I'd recommend starting where he talks about "Second Chance."

  • I have an iPhone 4 and just did a software update and now my phone won't turn in. It looks like it wants me to connect to iTunes but I'm traveling and can't access my account...or don't know how. Help!

I did a software update and cannot get my phone to turn off, on, or anything. It shows a gray apple and then an iTunes icon with a USB cable picture. I am not able to connect to my iTunes account because it's on my home computer (I'm traveling). It won't let me add my laptop because it says I have it tied to too many computers already and I can't deauthorize any of those computers because I don't know what they are, and I'm traveling. Can anyone help make my phone usable again? Preferably with contacts in tact.
    Pleeeeease!

A drop or two of water may have been enough to cook it. If it was bad enough to prompt you to put it in a bag of rice, then I'd venture to guess it was more than a drop or two.
Try putting it back in the bag of rice and leave it there for several days.
If that doesn't fix it, then you're more than likely looking at paying for an out of warranty replacement.
Water and delicate electronics don't generally get along well.

  • I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac.

I have a Seagate Slim Portable 500 GB USB 3.0 external hard drive that worked great with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina but gets ejected and won't show files on any iMac. My Macbook Pro and the two different iMacs I tried it on were all using Mountain Lion, so the only difference was the iMac versus Macbook Pro.

I just tried this, no luck...
I connected a different USB cable, still the same problem. Tried both cables with the problematic hard drive on two different computers, still the same problem.
At this point I assume I'll probably need professional help in saving the files, thanks for the assistance.

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive Experiences

I was wondering is Mac users general had good experience with the Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive? I was thinking about getting either the 1TB or 2TB for backup/storage.
It also says it has pre-loaded NTFS driver for the Mac. And the drive can be read by both PC and Mac. How does that work? And does anyone know if it is formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Also, what does journaling actual do. I read a few conflicting threads, it either actively defrags to increase speed and prevent data corruption especially in the case of a power outage or it significantly slows down the disk.

That drive is bus-powered, meaning it can get power only from the computer's USB ports. Unless you need small size so you can pack the drive around with you while traveling, consider instead a self-powered drive. If traveling with the drive is not an issue, also consider a larger desktop-type drive that holds a 3.5-inch form factor drive. The larger drives are historically more durable than the 2.5-inch laptop drives as would be installed in the Seagate you linked.
There are a fair number of reports in these forums of bus-powered drives working for a time and then not being recognized. With age, electric motors can demand more power than when new and, if that demand exceeds what a USB port can provide, the drive stops working.
IF you MUST use a laptop-class mobile external on a desktop computer, at minimum consider adding a self-powered USB hub to the purchase. It will overcome any lack of power issues the drive experiences:
NewerTech 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
OWC makes a mobile, bus-powered drive that can also use an optional power brick--best of both worlds. I have one and like its having a FireWire interface. However, you have a choice of interfaces:

    Ciao.

  • What do I need to do to be able to read and write files to a Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive on BOTH a Mac and a PC? I downloaded "Paragon NTFS for Mac" onto my Mac, so now I can write to the drive, but when I plug it into a PC it won't work.

If the HDD is formatted NTFS, then it suggests that there is a problem with the PC.  Check with the manufacturer.
    Ciao.
