[SOLVED:] SLIM not reading slim.conf (no password auto-focus)

Yesterday I began having issues with SLIM.  I'm not sure if they're related, but  while running Puppy , I inadvertently deleted the desktop icon for my Arch home directory on /dev/sda8.  I rebooted Puppy and it reappeared.  After running Puppy, something went wrong with my clocks (system and hardware) and the times were all wrong.  I fixed that with NTPD.  I currently dual boot Arch and Windows 7 from the hard drive, and occasionally from a USB stick, Puppy Linux.  I'm using an ASUS K50IJ laptop.  I run Xfce4.  I do not have any disk encryption enabled.
When I boot up, the SLIM login appears as normal, but rather than password auto-focus, I'm prompted for a username.  If I enter the username and hit return, I'm still staring at the username prompt.  After three or four iterations of entering a username + enter, I finally get a password prompt and can log in.
I have tried:
1.  Reinstalling archlinux-themes-slim
2.  Uninstalling archlinux-themes-slim and slim, then reinstalling slim
3.  Removing old Xfce4 & Xfwm sessions
4.  Removing slim.conf and entering a pristine version.
5.  Reviewing /var/log/slim.log files for oddities.  I found one:
Before the trouble started, I the message in the log was:
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections

I solved this - slim was not the last daemon I started in rc.conf.  By moving it to the end, I get password auto-focus and everything works.
Now my rc.conf looks like
# DAEMONS
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus acpid @network @wicd @openntpd @cupsd @crond slim)
I found this recommendation in the Display Manager wiki page while researching the problem:
Ensure you start the display manager last in the DAEMONS array, otherwise X will later allocate a tty device which was previously claimed by Getty (see /etc/inittab). Not placing the display manager at the end can cause X crashes, and is therefore unsupported.
I'd just been lucky before that there wasn't a conflict.
There is a "flicker" during login where I'm shown the XFCE splash, then the SLIM splash again, then the XFCE desktop.  Not sure what's going on there, but it's no big deal.
Cheers,
Rob

  • [SOLVED] xrdb not reading .Xresources at boot

spent a few hours trying to figure this out yesterday to no avail but still learned alot.
so in my home folder I have .Xresources file:
    ! terminal colors ------------------------------------------------------------
    ! tangoesque scheme
    *background: #111111
    *foreground: #babdb6
! Black (not tango) + DarkGrey
    *color0: #000000
    *color8: #555753
    ! DarkRed + Red
    *color1: #ff6565
    *color9: #ff8d8d
    ! DarkGreen + Green
    *color2: #93d44f
    *color10: #c8e7a8
    ! DarkYellow + Yellow
    *color3: #eab93d
    *color11: #ffc123
    ! DarkBlue + Blue
    *color4: #204a87
    *color12: #3465a4
    ! DarkMagenta + Magenta
    *color5: #ce5c00
    *color13: #f57900
!DarkCyan + Cyan (both not tango)
    *color6: #89b6e2
    *color14: #46a4ff
    ! LightGrey + White
    *color7: #cccccc
    *color15: #ffffff
I also made a .xinitrc file in my home directory:
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
my problem is after boot I still have to manually use xrdb ~/.Xresources to have my .Xresources file to run.
I know there is a lot on Google about this but I read through a large amount trying to get it to work. Apparently there are various problems and they depended up how your Desktop Manager starts the X environment.
I am using LXDE (desktop manager) and openbox (windowd manager). At login I am greated with a login splash screen that takes me into my LXDE environment... I just can't figure out how to force startx to trigger the reading of my .Xresources file.
I made sure all files were not made as root and they have the proper permissions including being ecexcutable.
However my boot is configured,  the .Xresources is simply not getting run through xrdb as doing it manually after boot workds perfectly...
The arch wiki reads: "are using  a Display Manager t log into X. Most DM will autoload the ~/.Xresources file on login"
So is this more a lxde question?
Another blog I read said that LXDE may not read .Xresources automatically thus the need for the .xinitrc file.... I followed those instructions as well to no avail:
    create .xinitrc
    chmod +x .xinitrc
    add xrdb -load ~/.Xresources &
    to the .xinitrc file
... did not work for my setup
at this point I am at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome!
Have you tried adding the command to Openbox' autostart.sh file? I don't know exactly how it's called, but it's usually placed in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/openbox/ and if everything works correctly, it is executed upon starting Openbox.
    EDIT
... and having read the comment below, yes, please use code tags. It confused me at first whether you were literally typing 'add' and 'create' as commands in your shell or not.

  • 10.10.1  I use sysctl.conf to increased shared memory.  10.10.1 does not read sysctl.conf anymore

I need to increase shared memory.  In 10.10  is use /etc/sysctl.conf with a line   kern.sysv.shmmax=16777216 and this works.  Also in 10.9.  But in 10.10.1 shared memory can no longer be increased from the default 4194304 by this means.
The question is simple:   how in 10.10.1 does one increase kern.sysv.shmmax  in a way that survives a re-boot

I have the same problem on my windows 2003 server but the
thing is that I have not been able to get the same error on any
other machine including a windows 2003 I installed on VMWare on the
same machine. I have narrowed down to where in the encoder this
happens. The encoder uses page file backed file maps to register
session information. The call to MapViewOfFileEx method of the
Win32 API fails with the "access denied" error. Whatever it is,
it's due to some defect in the Windows installation I have because
I do not get that message on any other windows installation even
the ones I do with the same windows CD !
I am still trying to find out what the defect might be but I
thought you should know it's got nothing to do with you Windows
make and model...it happens for me on 2k3 and for you on XP...so
    you should looke elsewhere..

  • [SOLVED] xterm not reading ~/.Xresources

Apparently, .Xresources is the new file of choice for x-clients and .Xdefaults is deprecated, at least so I read on the internetz. I have tried the following in my .Xresources:
    xterm*background:Black
    xterm*foreground:Green
but not luck. A quick "$ strace -eopen xterm" reveals that xterm doesn't even bother reading that file anymore, but rather prefers ~/.Xdefaults-arch ???
I am thinking lol wut, What is up with that? Anyone know why xterm is behaving that way?
Anyone got xterm to work with ~/.Xresources?

As far as I know, you have to use xorg-xrdb. execute xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources, e. g. in your .xinitrc, depending on how you are starting your wm. It is also not mandatory to use .Xresources. In my xinitrc I'm using the following:
    xrdb -merge << "EOF"
    URxvt*font:xft:monospace:size=12
    URxvt*scrollBar:false
    EOF

  • I thought I would be able to scan barcodes with my iPad 2 but it won't because it does not have an auto-focus camera. Can the camera be upgraded? can a peripheral cam be plugged in?

I thought I would be able to scan bar codes with my iPad 2 but cannot because it only has a fixed-lens camera. Bar code scanning apps require auto-focus cameras. Can I upgrade the camera within the iPad2 to auto-focus? If not, can I add a peripheral auto-focus camera and plug it in the the usb port?

Your not able to upgrade the  camera, it's not really there for photos . Also there is no USB port on the iPad just a cable that connects to you computer.

  • [Solved] slim not working after installing nvidia 331.20

    Hello Arch Community!
I recently joined your ranks and already have some problems with the graphics driver from Nvidia.
my system has been running perfectly for a week now and until today i used the nouveau drivers, but im not very happy with the performance, so i deinstalled them and installed nvidia + nvidia-utils.
no problems so far, in configured everything to my liking with nvidia-settings.
problem: after reboot slim does not start anymore,  i just get to tty1. funny thing is i can either use startx and my cinnamon will fire up or i can just use "sudo slim" and slim will start normally.
    i already tried
    sudo systemctl disable slim
    and
    sudo systemctl enable slim
to see if its still starting at boot and it does, so im quite confused here.

thank you very much, i didnt know i can add modules=nvidia in mkinitcpio.conf too. i always thought this was for opensource drivers only
anyway that fixed my problem. in a way. can i instruct slim to show the login prompt on only one monitor? because now the login field is "between" the two monitors. in other words slim uses both monitors like they are one big screen.
it looks like this now: http://abload.de/img/img_20131125_1801054ii4l.jpg
solved it by editing /usr/share/slim/themes/mytheme/slim.theme the line:
    input_panel_x 50%
    to
    input_panel_x 25%

Hello there, am new here and very stressed, i have an Imac core i3 which is logging off itself after a few seconds of login, it goes back to the login menu where i put the password. I have tried to repair the os but my pioneer rom is not reading the disk. I press the :c" button on startup but its not picking up the disk in the rom, i have tried to put the disk in an external rom but same answer, am starting to think that my os disk is bad. Please help me.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

You can try to this in ~/.xinitrc :

    or any other path.

  • My MacBook Pro does not read NTFS format, how can I solve this problem?

I connected my external Hard drive to my Mac and it gives the error abou not reading the NTFS files... is there an app that can solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot

You can take the drive to a PC, off load the files and right click and format the drive exFAT or FAT and place the files back on, then the Mac can read it.
If you install NTFS reading software on your Mac, you will always be paying for it and it's updates, breaks your connections to the hard drive as well.
Neutral formats are best, proprietary ones that require one to pay is bad.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's

    Hey saandyy,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • [SOLVED] hplip not asking for administrator privileges

I'm trying to setup My HP PSC but when is ready to setup , it does not ask for administrator privileges password so the setup fails .
i tough it was related to just my printing settings but when using Shaman it lets me select the software programs  that I want to install but the apply never gets turn green and if i use the icon to force the installation it fails, looks like it never tryes to ask for the admin password to proceed ???? any ideas?
    SOLVED
    gpasswd -a user adm,sys,lp

To boot, like it has always done;)
So, I miss somethings in my mkinitcpio.conf, I will investigate , but it strikes me a little bit since I never changed anything.
Ah, I remember having a upgrade for mkinitcpio.conf a few days or more back, will look into it.
Update: after falconindy's hint') added lvm2 and encrypt to the hooks.
    After that I ran; grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg  &&  mkinitcpio -p linux
The system boots, but I have to add; cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:ar ro    in grub by hand!

  • [solved]Cryptdevice not asking for passwd, LVM not accessible

So,after the latest kernel upgrade, Arch won't boot.
    What have I done so far;
    First I ran this commands;
    cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda ar ro
    modprobe dm-mod
    vgscan
    vgchange -ay
Then I try to mount them, and chroot into my install.
    mkdir /mnt/arch
    mount /dev/ch/ro /mnt/arch
    mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/arch/boot
    mount /dev/ch/ho /mnt/arch/home
    mount /dev/ch/va /mnt/arch/var
    mount /dev/ch/tp /mnt/arch/tmp
    arch-chroot /mnt/arch
This brings me into chroot, checking home dir, everything is oke, so far!
I try updating with pacman -Syyu, but no updates.
    Reinstalled mkinitcpio and Linux,
Ran mkinitcpio -p linux, unchroot, unmount and reboot didn't solve it.
I was running grub legacy, installed Grub2 in chroot, but this leads me to the same problem.
    What should happen normaly,
I boot and it should ask for the password to decrypt volume 'ch'.
It doesn't and comes with an error not being able to find the root device on /dev/mapper.
If it's not asking for the crypt-password in the first place, of course it won't be able to find the root-device;)
Perhaps boot is going to fast and it just runs over decrypting the LVM.
Maybe there is something wrong with my kernel line, but I don't see it,(
    /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/mapper/ch-ro ro cryptevice=/dev/sda2:ar ro
    My mkinitcpio.conf
    MODULES="i915"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems usbinput fsck"
If I need to provide more info...)
    Legenda: ar=cryptdevice   ch=LVM
    edit:typo & mkinitcpio.conf
