[SOLVED] startx works only as root

Hi to all,
I just installed arch on a vaio SVS13A with EFI and dual graphics, both HD4000 and nvidia. I am having troubles running X, startx works and shows the minimal environment only if I'm running it as root, if I'm running it as a normal user only a black screen appears and nothing happens, but there are no errors in Xorg.log. What's happening?
A thing I noticed is that if I try to run
Xorg -configure
it is not able to do it because it says there are two screens and only one device or something like that (I'm sorry I can't remember well but I'll check next time). Maybe Xorg is not able to find the correct screen (?) when I'm running it as normal user?
On the laptop there's a switch between "stamina" and "speed" to enable the discrete graphics card, I'm doing everything with the graphics disabled but the nvidia card seems to be recognized corretly anyway, maybe it's only a sw thing?

I added the configuration file for the two graphic cards but startx for the normal user is still terribly slow to start and I'm not able to use gdm.
I don't want to use both graphic cards or use nvidia optimus or something like that for now, I just want to access gnome and use X. I'm using the intel integrated graphics since it seems the other is not working (if I configure xorg to use it it's not able to run). From xorg.log it seems intel i915 module is able to recognize the card but for some reason gdm is still not working and whowing me only black screen with the clock instead of mouse cursor. To me it seems HD4000 is recognized but for some reason gdm is not working.
The situation is: two graphic cards (intel HD4000 and nvidia) and one monitor (my laptop monitor). I'm using nouveau and intel. No Ati and no dual screen.
Where can I find some logs in order to find the problem? daemons.log says there's a problem with dbus: no such file or directory but it seems dbus is up and running.

When using startx, it only works as root.
There doesn't seem to be any problems in the xorg log, either.

have you configured your .xinitrc?
edit - i don't know what i was thinking when i asked the question that way... did you configure the one in /home/yourusername/.xinitrc

[SOLVED] systemd problem: scanimage works only as root

Hello,
I can list the scanner with lsusb, and it works with no error messages when I run scanimage. But the image file I get is corrupted. However if I do it as root, then the file is OK.
I've just changed to systemd and I wonder if that might have something to do with it.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment. My line nuber 13 of cupsd.conf looks now like this and sort of fixed the issue.
SystemGroup sys root users
Scanimage -L works without complain, but it takes much longer time then before. There is huge delay fore the scanning starts.
If I stop cups by issuing /etc/rc.d/cupsd stop The problem starts again, however there is no delay.
The corrupted scan image file has got the "Failed cupsGetDevices" at the very beginning of it added. That is why it is corrupted.
If I do scanning using xsane, there is no delay nor corrupted file. It just works fine without cupsd running.
Is there any way I can fix this issue and don't let cups to delay the scanning nor add the "Failed cupsGetDevices" at the beginning of the file ?
Is there a way to say scanimage not to use cups at all?

[SOLVED] Pkgfile works only if I source file in shell's run command

Hello. I have created discussion here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Talk:Pkgfile, where I was told to open forum thread.
At the Command not found section it is explained that it will automatically search the official repositories, when entering an unrecognized command
But for me, it only works if I source file, as it is explained further:
To enable it in all children shells, you need to source the hook from one of your shell initialization files.
Example for Bash: ~/.bashrc
source /usr/share/doc/pkgfile/command-not-found.bash
I think we shold make it workable as it is explained in wiki or edit wiki as it works.
By the way, why there was removed useful information about command-not-found aur package? See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=317469 I think we should explain in wiki about this package too.

Am I missing something here? The wiki says that pkgfile includes that hook, and immediately afterwords says how to enable it. You are claiming it only works for you when you enable it. Good. This is the expected behavior, that's why the instructions on how to enable that feature are right there in the wiki. What is the issue here?

Yes, there is. It says to source that file from your shellrc file. It even gives explcit examples on how to do that for bash and zsh.

I had similar issues to you and also found that vuescan works fine - my previous investigation of this issue seemed for my system to point to a problem with a scanner plugged into a usb3 port where the same scanner plugged into a computer that only has usb2 worked fine. I wonder if your scanner is plugged into a usb3 port? You might also find that plugging your scanner into a machine with only usb2 might work - this has been the subject of a bug report in the xsane scanner bug list for quite some time without a resolution yet.

[SOLVED]Sound works only in phonon

I'd like to know why I can hear nothing. I've tried lots of solutions, but none has worked fine. But strangely the tests in Phonon work.
My sound cards are:
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]

And the one that should work is the 1,0; I can tell you that because it works in Phonon.
- I've checked out both alsamixer and Kmix and the channels were unmuted.
- I've tried to set the default sound card using a global asound.conf.
- I've checked whether all modules have been loaded correctly
- Trying to play something with aplay, the device is busy
- In the UEFI, the audio is enabled
The issue is always the same:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2, No such file or directory
I think I've written everything, I'm sorry if I haven't.

I just had an issue with no sound after recent updates. Not sure it's the same problem you are having.
I found I had to open Audio Mixer, select Sound card: HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer), Select Controls, check box for Speaker and check box for Headphones. After doing this I found the Speaker volume was set at minimum (although Master and PCM were already set at maximum). Adjusted Speaker volume up and I finally had sound again.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Ichat video not working only to one person

I've read most of the post on "i chat not working"; but has anyone had it to not work only to one individual. This is my case. I can video i chat with my son in FWB FL. with no problem. He has an Apple also. I can take my laptop to his location and video i chat with my sister-in-law in Jefferson Ga. But, I cannot video i chat with my sister-in-law from my location, Valrico, Fl. to her location in Jefferson Ga. I have had a 3 way phone conversation going with Apple, My internet provider and her internet provider and no one can solve the problem. Does anyone have any assistance they can provide. I'm not computer savy; so be patient and go slow and detail with me; thanks. Norm

More often than not this is about the way a modem or router or combo at either end use NAT.
NAT is Network Address Translation.
It is the way a device shares an Internet connection with several devices/computers.
However NAT means different things to different devices and not all devices therefore are doing what is called NAT the same way.

So what you may have is a device at either end that does not or will not play nicely with another device.
This can be particularly the case if the device has to use Port Forwarding or Port Triggering or is using the DMZ to open ports.
Using UPnP reduces the problem in many cases.

Makes and models please with what they are doing to open the ports for iChat.
As Defcom has pointed out with certain connection it can be the Speed difference in the Internet connection both up and down that can be a factor.

Badi working only in Debug mode

Hi experts,
It's my first time with Badi, and I'm facing a issue I can't understand.
I've activated badi ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST , and everything work's fine .
From the method "Close" I call a Z... function which writes data on a custom table.
I've tested it and the system correctly update the table , but when I deactivate the debug in the badi's method , it looks like the badi is not implemented and the system doesn't pass trough the function.
Can somebody adress me to solve it ?

Thank you for your help Sudhir , but the table update it's done by the custom function which should be called by the BAdI. My issue is that the BAdI's method works only if I set a break-point on it. If I do not put a break-point on the BAdI , the function is not called at all !!.

Function Module working only in debug mode

Hi all,
The following Function Module works only in debug mode. The purpose of this FM is to create a notification and to put it in progress status. If I put a breakpoint before "CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_ALM_NOTIF_PUTINPROGRESS'" it works. If I execute this FM without putting a breakpoint at that place it creates the notification but doesnt put it in progress status.
In other words, the last BAPI call doesnot work if I dont put a breakpoint before.
Can somebody help me to find out where is the problem?

Now I get your problem: you want to wait to have the commit finished! The call to BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT has an optional parameter 'WAIT' which is space by default which causes only a commit. When you set this parameter to 'X' it will do a commit work and wait.
This should solve your problem!

Hi all,
After correcting a table-of-contents error in my .epub file, I am unable to upload it via iTunes Producer. It lists this error message:
ERROR ITMS-9000: "META-INF/container.xml in 9780615431727.epub must contain one and only one root file reference." at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)
The file has been verified and only has one root file reference in the container.xml file.
Has anyone been able to find a solution to this problem?

For those of you who have run into the upload roadblock, getting an error message similar to this:

Following is a "specific" fix, but the idea of the fix will help you with your specifics too.
I tried for 17 days to upload a book that looked and worked perfectly in iPAD via Preview.
After many discussions with Apple, who to their credit stayed with me over 2-3 days, I decided to play a hunch.
I went into a duplicated copy of the book and on every page, (because the error message was not telling the whole story), looked for what InDesign would call "Overset Text."
Now... the "flaw" in iBOOK Author (hint) is that it won't advise you of this "overset text" as does InDesign.
And to compound the matter, the exported ePUB document WORKS in iPAD Preview.

Okay... Couldn't add it but it is a Warning Box that says there is overset text. (Characters which exceed the text box.)
Nevertheless, I played this hunch, and sure enough found a few boxes with the + in them. In other words I clicked on EVERY text holder and every text block in the entire document.
Where I found + signs, I simply deleted some carriage returns from the iBOOK file... (please note… carriage returns and literally empty spaces that caused the overset text) and then erased all previous copies of the Music to Picture Book on my hard drive, iTUNES and iPAD.
The result? A "text-book" upload with no snags! As my Son would say… "Victory!"
So, first make sure that you are using only PNGs, Jpegs and Movie files to iBook Specs. Then... make sure there are no overset text boxes, which you must do manually.

Video control works only with right click

I published a podcast in my iweb website.
One of the videos has been published, but the play button works only by right clicking, instead of normal left click...
Other videos work well....
I Just tried to delete, rebuild and publish again the page, but nothing changed...
Does anybody know how to solve my issue?

Since you do not provide useful information so I can check it, I have to guess :
Is an image or object blocking the video? Or is the video below the bodylayer and in the footer area?
In a browser window, do Command-A to select everything on a page.
In iWeb do Command-Shift-L to see the outline of the page and it's object.
Study everything very carefully to see what's hiding.

Android and mtp - only for root

I''m trying to access my Android tablet via usb cable. I read the wiki page on mtp and I tried mtpfs, go-mtpfs and simple-mtpfs.
Each time I have the same problem, it doesn't work as user, only as root. As user mtp-detect doesn't find anything. As root simple-mtpfs works ok.
I uncommented user_allow_other in /etc/fuse.conf and added myself in fuse group (that didn't exist) as archwiki suggested.
Any idea what's the problem?

FWIW, if you are trying to transfer files between your android device and computer, I have found that using some kind of network file service on your computer works great. So I have a file server that runs a samba service (for my family), ssh/sftp (for me), and nfs4 (also for me). Unfortunately, I have not found a decent nfs application for android. But using either samba/smb or sftp seems to work great over my LAN. Then it can all be handles wirelessly as well.
I have noticed that there are quite a few file manager applications for android that also include clients for sftp, ftp, smb, and some of the online syncing services (like dropbox). So I use my file manager application, which I think is called Solid File Manager. Of course, you could also use bittorrent sync to handle this as well, though on my device it seems to eat away at the battery rather quickly.
