[SOLVED] sudo trouble

Hi,
newly installed sudo isn't working properly:
$ sudo shutdown -r now
[sudo] password for me:
Sorry, user me is not allowed to execute '/sbin/shutdown -r now' as root on mybox.
$                                                         $
Curiously, sudo honors pacman, for instance:
$ sudo pacman -Syu
as specified in visudo:
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
%users ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacman
%users ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacman-color
%users ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacdiffviewer
Any ideas?

Thanks, WorMzy!
# gpasswd -a me wheel
is the soluiton.
By the way, the groups part as a step has vanished from the Beginner's Guide, which is supposed to be a step-by-step instruction. Perhaps 'be sure to consult' remark would be better than 'for more information'.

  • [SOLVED] Steam troubles. Segfault after login.

    Hello. I'm usually pretty good about solving my own problems, but this one has me beat. So, yay, first post.
    Recently my nephew brought me his computer for a nuke and pave, and since he doesn't have a legit Windows key and I don't use Windows anymore I decided to install Arch on his machine, since it's what I use and I'm their go-to tech support.
    Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting Steam to run correctly on his machine. It will start up, update/verify install, show the login screen, and after authenticating it promptly dies.
    Some details:
    This is a somewhat fresh install. I provisioned it from within a Vbox VM on my own workstation and then moved the HDD to the actual box.
    Full system update was done just today. Problem existed prior and persists after.
    Proprietary GPU drivers are not being used.
    lspci shows the video adapter to be: 07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71 [GeForce 7900 GS] (rev a1)
    I've already removed Steam's bundled libs, as per the wiki.
    I've tried steam --reset and rm -rf ~/.steam and removing and reinstalling the steam package. No dice.
    The presentation of problems detailed here seemed pretty similar so I installed lib32-dbus but this did not resolve the issue.
    I'm not checking remember password. This bug seems to be unrelated

    Perhaps hardware failure? But my nephew played Dust AET for a while and it ran fine.

    I'm also in a similar situation, surprised that it took this long for someone to post the problem here (it's been at least a week since this started)...
    There's a report here:
    https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam- … -67916730\
    I also get a segfault when running steam with STEAM_RUNTIME disabled now.
    Here's my command line output: https://gist.github.com/uberscientist/0 … 26de094ec5
    With STEAM_RUNTIME libs it runs fine (however TF2 fails to start...)
    If I can provide any more useful information let me know. I am running Arch Linux, systemd (so OpenRC probably has nothing to do with it), x86_64.
    I'll subscribe to this topic and continue crossing my fingers an update fixes things.

  • [SOLVED] sudo doesnt work

    Hi guys,
    I'm having the strangest issues since my last installation of archlinux. First I could not login into any tty (after entering the username, nothing happened). I could solve that by installing the util-linux package. Now I cannot use sudo.
    The user is in the group wheel (which is uncommented in sudoers). I have changed nothing in the sudoers file, here's the content:
    ## sudoers file.
    ## This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
    ## Failure to use 'visudo' may result in syntax or file permission errors

    Jul 12 13:46:22 localhost sudo: archUser: 1 incorrect password attempt ; TTY=pts/2 ; PWD=/home/archUser; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/pacman -Syyuu
    So I looked up the content of /etc/pam.d/sudo:
    root@arch /etc/pam.d # cat sudo
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth required pam_unix.so
    auth required pam_nologin.so
    The files pam_unix.so and pam_nologin.so are both saved in /usr/lib/security.
    I noticed that if I enter the password wrong, I need to wait one or two seconds before I can try it again (this behaviour seems to be normal). But when I enter the password correct, there is no waiting time and I can enter the pass again.
    I have no idea what to do and hope that anyone can help me to use sudo again.
    4 years ago, after installing archlinux the first time, I had not a single error. Everything worked just fine but now I get two errors at once after the installation!

  • [SOLVED] sudo and XDG_CONFIG_HOME

    I'm not really sure in which section my problem fits, but since I realized I had it creating a new package... Here it is.
    I submitted a new package (brogue) to the AUR. The way the code was written makes it necessary to have the executable in the same folder as the png and so files. To work around it I thought of moving all the files to one folder and then create a shell script that would cd to that folder, run the game, and return to the previous path. I could move them to /usr/ or somewhere in $HOME. I chose the second one and here is my problem.
    When I check for XDG_CONFIG_HOME in PKGBUILD I get one path and when I do it the same way to run the game I get another one.
    if [ -z "$XDG_CONFIG_HOME" ]; then
        _config_dir="$pkgdir/$HOME/.config/brogue"
    else
        _config_dir="$pkgdir/$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/brogue"
    fi
    if [ -z "$XDG_CONFIG_HOME" ]; then
      _config_dir="$HOME/.config/brogue"
    else
      _config_dir="$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/brogue"
    fi
    I know this happens because (obviously) I install as root and run it as normal user. One way to solve this is to sudo -u username pacman but it is a crappy way.
    What's wrong? Am I looking for XDG_CONFIG_HOME the wrong way in the PKGBUILD? Or should I have sudo using my user as default (don't really think so)?
    PS: Since the files are not really config files, sould I dump them on other place? For instance, I realize that I could have solved this moving them to /usr/share/. But the problem would come eventually and I would have to ask you guys just the same....
    Last edited by jlcordeiro (2010-10-14 13:36:58)

    Packages should never touch the user's home directory in any way. Namcap could have warned you about this. You're also missing some dependencies.
    Just install the executable and image files in /usr/share/brogue, the .so files in /usr/lib and add a frontend script to /usr/bin.
    Note that this is still ugly. Installing the precompiled binaries and libraries should be avoided. Instead, create a separate package for libtcod and have your brogue package depend on it, then properly build brogue from source in your PKGBUILD.
    In your frontend script, just cd to /usr/share/brogue and run it. No need to cd back to '-'.
    Also, makepkg runs as a normal user, so using an environment variable in the PKGBUILD should yield the user value.

  • [SOLVED] sudo -i changes ownership of .Xauthority to root, breaks X

    From a normal user's terminal session running in xmonad, I tried to enter a root terminal session with "sudo -i".
    I got sent to the virtual console and couldn't switch back to X. An error message told me .Xauthority was not writable. The user's .Xauthority file was now owned by root and not writable.
    After removing the root-owned files, I could start X and everything seems normal.
    "sudo -s" and "su" work as expected.
    Do I have a bad configuration? Do I not understand "sudo -i"?
    Edit: Could sudo's "initial login" try to start X as root? I have auto-login configured for the first virtual console. I'll try to switch that off and try again.
    SOLVED: The cause was my root user's .bash_profile and .zprofile. I copied my user's .bash_profile and .zprofile over to root and didn't notice that I should comment the following line to automatically start X:
    [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx

  • [DIS-SOLVED] Sudo hangs after a few uses

    I've been searching around for this for some time, but haven't found any enlightenment yet.
    Basically, after rebooting I can use sudo a few times (usually 3) successfully. After that, any sudo command just hangs. Interestingly, "sudo -k" still returns normally, but "sudo -v" hangs. It is worth noting that sudo gets as far as prompting me for my password before hanging.
    Background - possibly useful:
    I've had arch running for a few months now, and this just started happening yesterday, when I left my machine running overnight doing a large dd to an external drive as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … _hard_disk . I woke up, found that the i/o was all finished (I could tell because I was using pv to monitor it), but the command ( which was "sudo dd if=/dev/sda conv=sync,noerror bs=32M | pv -pbert | gzip -c > /run/media/jimbo/Backup2/sda_82513.img.gz") hadn't returned and wasn't responding to SIGINTs. The hanging behavior started here, and I wasn't able to kill the process or unmount my external cleanly. I'm not sure exactly what I did then, but I'm pretty sure I just hard-rebooted my machine, and I've been seeing this behavior ever since.
    Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll post any config files you guys are interested in, with PII redacted.

    Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm having a blast using arch so far.
    So I restored from the dd that I had done, and things are working fine now. I'm not sure what I should do with this thread: should I mark it solved? I didn't actually discover the cause of the problem, so that doesn't seem right.
    To answer your questions:
    1. I may have had one of the partitions on sda mounted. Is this likely to have caused what I saw?
    2. pv, which I just discovered, allows you to see the progress of data through a pipeline. It's pretty neat. The p, b, e, r, and t flags should turn on the progress bar, byte counter, ETA timer, rate counter, and timer, respectively. After looking at the man page, it appears that this is actually the default behavior. So I could have just used pv with no options.

  • [SOLVED] Having trouble dual booting Windows: normal.mod not found

    Hello every one, I'm a Gentoo user who wants to try something different. So I thought I'd install Arch on my new laptop.
    Anyhow, this is my first proper UEFI install on real hardware. So I might be doing something stupid here, but I've searched all over the forums and the internet and can't seem to find anything similar about it. So please excuse me if there is already a similar or very similar topic
    Since I'm new to Arch I followed the Beginner's guide. Everything went fine, install was very quick compared to Gentoo phew... anyhow there came the tricky part, the bootloader install, as I am a real total noob with EFI. I followed the instructions carefully.
    The result is: I now have 4 entries in my GRUB menu, 2 are Arch and its fallback, one is Windows 8 detected by osprober, and one is my custom Windows 8 with the usual chain loading setup that i've always used (with some fixes found on the 'net). Arch boots fine, but Windows doesn't; I get booted down to the recovery console, with an error that GRUB cannot find /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod. Even though the file is of course existing. I tried to "insmod part_gpt" and others, and it couldn't find any of them, except part_msdos. Yeah I know, it's weird. Unfortunately I need to use Windows sometimes for some programs like Guitar Rig which need a good native audio connection.
    My opinion is that there must be some place where the paths are not correct. But I keep looking at the config files and I can't find anything wrong with them...
    The system had a Linux Mint 14 install on it previously but it bricked itself while updating to Mint 15. And I only really had Mint on there because of the automatic bootloader setup. Which worked well up to when I got rid of Mint (it was on /dev/sda8, where Arch is now). I hope it doesn't complicate the matter.
    My EFI system partition is /dev/sda2. There are so many partitions because it's a Samsung laptop and there's a partition for samsung recovery, one for windows 8 recovery, and so on... The only "real" partitions are /dev/sda2 for EFI, /dev/sda4 for Windows, and /dev/sda8 for Arch.
    Here are some command outputs to show you what my system is like. I hope they are helpful. If there's anything missing I shall supplement it of course!
    Thanks in advance
    sudo efibootmgr -v

    Hello cfr,
    Thanks for your reply!
    Yes, I had /dev/sda2, my EFI partition, mounted at /boot when I did grub-install and grub-mkconfig. I also had the efivars filesystem unmounted, and ran rmmod plus modprobe on efivars as written.
    umount /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
    # modprobe -r efivars
    # modprobe efivars
    My command was exactly the same as the beginner's guide, and it was
    grub-install --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    Now looking at that command, I am wondering, should it have been "--efi-directory=/boot/EFI" or something similar like that? But the fact that Arch boots and runs fine kind of shows the bootloader did indeed install correctly... Or partially at least.
    Maybe an ls -l of some of my /boot directories might be useful. Thanks!

  • [solved] "sudo meld" doesn't work

    Hi there,
    recently I've installed "meld" for merging tasks. The problem: as a user meld works pretty fine but obviously doesn't save any changes to files that require root permission. Now I have tried to start meld with sudo, but this doesn't work:
    $ sudo meld

    I must admit that i don't have an idea what that means
    So, any help would be appreciated

    Seems you are right . I've installed gksu and now it seems to work - the GUI starts when I use "gksudo meld".
    Maybe gksu should become a dependency for meld?!
    Thanks a lot

  • (Solved) Having trouble installing vlc and openoffice

    I am having trouble installing both VLC and Openoffice.
    VLC
    I tried typing in:
    yaourt -S vlc
    At first, it finds the package, and the first time I did it, downloaded quite a bit of stuff, and then it failed after installing a rather large package and then says :
    error: failed retreiving file 'vlc-0.9.9a-6-i686.pkg.tar.bz' from archlinux.unix.heads.org : Not Found
    Any idea what may be causing this?
    OpenOffice
    I tried typing in:
    yaourt -S openoffice
    Then it said it could not find openoffice in my /etc/customizepkg.d and then asks me to change my PKGBUILD and I had no idea what to edit in it.
    Then, it tried to install it,  and it tells me svn is not found in AUR.
    What does this mean and how can I get openoffice?
    Last edited by iscalio (2009-07-09 08:26:02)

    You need to use the -y flag to update your local repository list.
    Ie pacman -Sy
    You can conveniently combine all of your tasks..
    pacman -Sy vlc openoffice-base
    Error retrieving a file means either
    A) The mirror you are using is updating itself and you were unlucky enough to sync right when it was doing so.. youll need to wait a little while and try -Sy again then..
    B) Related to A.. your database could be either older or newer than the mirror you are using. If you switched mirrors recently, this happens sometimes. Most mirrors update ~daily, but some update ~weekly. -Sy to sync.. you could try -Syy to force a full sync so that even lists of supposedly up-to-date repositories (core,extra,so forth) are synced (doing so is only good/useful if you have problems)..
    C) Your mirror is offline.. change it to another one in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    D) Your internet is not running / your DNS is not working properly.. try to ping a site you know is online to be sure. Google is always a good choice. ping www.google.com. You can ctrl+c to end it if it responds as expected. Fix your internet (see the wiki) and domain name server (/etc/resolv.conf and your router) if you have problems.
    You may or may not also wish to pacman -Scc in order to clean out your cache of saved packages in case there is a download problem.
    Your post gives the impression you don't understand pacman vs yaourt.. apologies if i'm wrong, but just in case:
    Pacman is used for official binary repository files. Yaourt can do pacman's job in addition to its own with the same syntax (imo it does a pretty slow and lousy job of such though), but it's real original function is primarily to install 3rd party / community packages that the Arch devs either can't or won't maintain (and most often, have not "ok"ed them as safe to install). You should look at yaourt in the wiki.. when it asks you to change the pkgbuild I imagine you mean when it says 'what do you want to edit it with?'.. which you dont need to edit it at all. The reason it asks you is because yaourt can install stuff from AUR, which like I said is 3rd party / community stuff that can contain something malicious (AUR is open to submissions, unlike the official repositories) and you are highly advised to look it over for something fishy before compiling and installing. FYI -- believe me, you don't want to compile openoffice without reaaally good reason on a really fast machine. It hurts. Your machine will be as usable as a doorstop for a very long time while it's doing it's business. Just save your time and patience, install the compiled binary via pacman instead.
    Please use the wiki, forum search functions, and man pages. Most of the Arch community is friendly and knowledgeable, but people get (rightly) irked when their work maintaining the aforementioned to answer queries like this one are ignored.

  • [SOLVED] Having trouble making QT apps use GTK theme

    Hello everyone, I'm having trouble making QT apps use my GTK theme in openbox.
    Some apps seem to work just fine but others don't.
    ^Such as above, as you can see VLC is working, as is qtconfig, but k9copy and k3b are not.
    I've did the suggestions that are listed in the wiki. (http://tinyurl.com/ybhb7yr)
    And even rebooted after I did them, still no go.
    My .gtkrc-2.0 file simply contains:
    gtk-theme-name="Clearlooks_blackblue"
    gtk-icon-theme-name="Tango"
    Does anyone have any ideas why it's not working with k9copy and k3b/how to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Yes, but don't they use QT?
    And if not, what do they use? lol. And is there anyway to make them use my GTK theme?

  • [solved]Sudo asking for password when it shouldn't through a sh script

    Bottom of my sudoers file looks like this:
    user username = (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/g15daemon
    user username = (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/g15stats
    Shell script looks like that:
    #!/bin/sh
    sudo /usr/bin/g15daemon -k &
    sleep 2 && sudo /usr/bin/g15daemon &
    sleep 5 && sudo /usr/bin/g15stats
    If I run these commands from the terminal they work as intended (no password) but when I execute that shell script it asks for a password.

    teateawhy wrote:1. The reason it asks for a password is the first command in the script. The complete command including arguments must be specified in /etc/sudoers. If you want to allow "/usr/bin/g15daemon -k" to be run from  sudo, write this string after NOPASSWD.
    I've seen this claim before on these forums, but that's not true:
    man sudoers wrote:A simple file name allows the user to run the command with any arguments he/she wishes.
    The reason it doesn't work is the "user username" part. You probably have an actual username there that you don't want to share with us, but then what exactly is the difference between "user" and "username"? The second element should be a host list:
    man sudoers wrote:The basic structure of a user specification is “who where = (as_whom) what”.
    To keep it simple you can use ALL for both "where" and "as_whom".

  • [solved] sudo command in a Bash function?

    Hello there,
    I need to use sudo inside of a Bash function in order to allow my laptop to hibernate after a certain time using "systemctl hibernate".
    However, I cannot figure out what's the correct way to include sudo inside of my function snippet:
    function hibernate {
    echo "System is going to hibernate in $1 minute(s)..."
    sleep $1m ; systemctl hibernate
    alias hibernate_timer=sudo hibernate # sudo misplaced here
    Last edited by orschiro (2013-06-26 20:33:47)

    you'd need sudo's -E parameter for that, otherwise that function is not defined in the su environment.
    EDIT: -E is not sufficient.
    man sudoers wrote:In all cases, environment variables with a value beginning with () are
         removed as they could be interpreted as bash functions.  The list of environ‐
         ment variables that sudo allows or denies is contained in the output of “sudo
         -V” when run as root.
    You cannot pass functions to sudo - the alias is not relevant, you couldn't do this directly: `sudo hibernate` would fail.
    I'd also recommend putting the sudo as "deep" as possible: right on the systemctl command.  There is a reason bash functions are not allowed to be 'sudo'ed - and running sudo on a function that includes a sleep command seem particularly bad to me.

    After upgrade to xserver 1.16 I noticed strange thing - any command I try to run with sudo "hangs" keyboard and mouse. It looks like after typing password and pressing <Enter>, this key is not released.
    System is still responsive, for example I can watch youtube, listen to music, there is no high cpu usage, but inputs are blocked.
    For example:
    sudoedit /etc/whateverrc
    opens editor and cursor goes down.
    This is not a problem with my keyboard
    In tty sudo works fine.

    What DE/WM?
    AwesomeWM, quite old setup.
    What is in your journal/logs?
    After "hang" X still works, so I need to kill it (alt+sysrq+re) or reboot.

    Can anyone tell me why sudo pm-suspend still requires a password even though I have set the following in my sudoers file

    You definitely need the space, if you're not using visudo to edit sudoers it won't pick up the errors.
