[solved] thinkpad_acpi: cannot load module

Hi, I can´t modprobe the thinkpad_acpi module on my x61, I get the error below:
FATAL: Error inserting thinkpad_acpi (/lib/modules/2.6.34-ARCH/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.ko): No such device
Although there is a thinkpad_acpi.ko in this directory.
Any suggestions? Sorry for this short discription, but the output is simple and maybe the solution just as well. :-)

I'm no expert on how the module reads the system info (from proc or sys perhaps?), but for whatever reason some ThinkPads just aren't detected properly. The force_load option is specifically for this case with thinkpad_acpi ('modinfo thinkpad_acpi' for details).
If using force_load bothers you, you could try updating your BIOS to the latest version. That might fix the detection problems with Linux and thinkpad_acpi.
As I tend to forget to do this, you may want to configure the option to be persistent by adding it to modprobe.conf.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I tend to run into forgetting to rebuild tp_smapi after kernel rebuilds. I was too quick to reply before realizing that thinkpad_acpi != tp_smapi.

  • [solved] acpi - cannot load module

    Hi,
    I know that I'am not the only one with this problem, but I haven't found a clear solution yet. After doing a clean install with Gimmick, I tried to scale cpu-frequency. Thought I would follow the instructions in the French wiki page: http://wiki.archlinuxfr.org/doku.php?id=acpi_powernowd
    I have installed acpi and powernow, of course. I have an AMB Sempron 2800+ processor, which supports powernow-k8. However, when I try "modprobe acpi", I receive this message:
    FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
    But the file manager tells me that this module might be found under exactly this path ...
    Searching around I have found that someone apparently solved this problem by recompiling the kernel without SMP support. I am afraid that this is somewhat beyond my reach (i don't even a have clue what SMP is). Please let know if there is an easier way to get things done.
    Best wishes, t.

    Ooops - yes, I see ... Admittedly, my French isn't the best
    It is running fine now with powernow-k8, cpufreq_userspace and powernowd.
    Thanks for the hint, t.

    Wrong version of what? Solaris was installed from JumpStart CD and patched appropriately. NFS server components came with the installation.
    What steps should I take to have NFS in service? More patches? Which ones? I really need NFS running ASAP.

    Hi Mark e Stefan.
    First of all, thank for your cooperations!
    Now... I've checked the env path as you say, and everithing is ok.
    After that I try to check the "List of  Dynamic Dependencies" with the ldd command, and this is the result:
    bwpadm> ldd $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
    /oracle/BWP/102_64/bin/oracle needs:
             /usr/lib/libc.a(shr_64.o)

             /usr/lib/libcfg.a(shr_64.o)

    Now, "just for fun", i've created a symlink to the quality test system (BWT)
    /oracle/BWT -> BWP
    and executing the ldd $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle command i didn't get any error!
    Now, after  executing the relink all command I get the following error message:

  • [SOLVED] can't load module-echo-cancel for PulseAudio (WebRtc)

    I have added the line load-module module-echo-cancel to /etc/pulse/default.conf as said in the arch wiki but after I do that , I cannot start pulse and it gives me the follwoing error :
    E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
    I have tried looking in the forum and google for a soulation but failed to find something  that works , also tried different variations of the line like :
    load-module module-echo-cancel source_name=echosource sink_name=echosink channels=1
    but nothing works ...
    so I think it is either the line I use is somehow wrong or I am missing some dependency for using webrtc.
    thanks in adavnce for any help.
    edit : well I solved the problem ..., it seems that after I have installed pavucontrol I was able to succsufully load the echo-cancel module

    ok, did and done. (However, note that this isn't raw code since I have to type from display of the monitor to the laptop.)

    According to file, I do have the latest kernel, which makes this even more peculiar since it isn't consistent with 'uname -r'
    3.5.6-1-ARCH
    and I'm using grub legacy, I think.

  • [SOLVED] Can't load module autofs4

    I am following autofs wiki page which instructs me to load module autofs4. modprobe autofs4 and sudo modprobe autofs4 result in no console output.
    Trying to remove module:

    modprobe: FATAL: Module autofs4 is builtin.
    Do I need to load this module at all?

    It's only for when you use a Mackie Control surface.

    What's strange is that Tp smapi's functionality seems to be there anyway... It's a module for battery control in Thinkpads and my battery indeed doesn't charge beyond 80%, the way I want it to be.
    I'm having the same issue. I think you will find that the "functionality" isn't provided, as you said, /sys/devices/platform/smapi doesn't exist, and that your battery is actually remembering the last charge limits you sent to it. Try to remove the battery and put it back, I'm nearly sure that it'll lose them. This is what happens to me on my second battery, the ultra-bay one, which I occasionally have to remove to insert my CD drive.
    No idea why tp_smapi doesn't load when put in MODULES in rc.conf, but workarounds should be easy. Alternatively, if you only use it to update your charge settings, you can just manually load it each time you need to.
    EDIT :
    Have just found out that by manually adding thinkpad_ec before tp_smapi in MODULES in rc.conf, everything loads. Strange, since thinkpad_ec should be loaded automatically with tp_smapi. But hey, it works.

  • [solved] could not load module 'processor'

    Since the recent upgrade to kernel 2.6.20.7-1 the acpi kernel modules have to be loaded manually. Thats all good, i don't have a problem with that. On my desktop I load  'button', 'processor'.
    But since the upgrade to 2.6.20.7-2 the module 'processor' disappeared.
    > /lib/modules/2.6.20-ARCH/kernel/drivers/acpi$ ls

    Is that normal or what happened here?

    I see you are from Germany, so have a look at this:
    http://www.laber-land.de/?page=Postings … hread=5973
    Translation:
    Since kernel 2.6.20.7-2 the modules thermal and processor are directly integrated into the kernel and must/could not be loaded separatly.

  • Hauppauge WinTV HVR 850 - cannot load module

    Hi,
    I recently got TV and thought i'd give a try to a tuner card and record some stuff on my PC.
    I read on the net, and the cheapest, yet linux-ok was the Hauppauge WinTV HVR 850, so i got that one.
    I read alot on the net about it to make it work. I tried pretty much everything i could, but now i'm giving up.
    I saw it needs the au0828 driver, as you can see in /usr/src/linux-2.6.39-jni/drivers/media/video/au0828/au0828-cards.c
    [AU0828_BOARD_HAUPPAUGE_HVR850] = {
    .name = "Hauppauge HVR850",
    .tuner_type = TUNER_XC5000,
    .tuner_addr = 0x61,
    .i2c_clk_divider = AU0828_I2C_CLK_30KHZ,
    .input = {
    However, when booting, it seems to use cx231xx/cx25840 and those seem to crash miserably.
    here is what i can see in dmesg :

    Here are some more info. I am still totally lost in this though.
    I managed to get rid of the driver issue posted above.
    I plugged in analogic cable and tvtime would show some images, but with no sound (despite me trying every possible channel my alsa has to offer).
    I then tried plugging in the cable directly from the wall, without using the decoder... image went black and i couldn't see a thing (as i thought).
    However, now that i went back to my original setup (simply plug in, plug out and plug back in... simple as that), i no longer have the picture!
    Here are some verbose output from tvtime and xawtv. If someone can understand something out of that, help would be greatly appreciated!

    Any ideas?

    Why do you have both the host and guest modules installed on the same machine? Hint: you should have only. I'm going to guess that you're attempting this on the host (aka the machine which runs virtualbox, not the virtual machine itself), which means that there's nothing wrong here.

  • [Solved by itself] Loading module aha152x failed after kernel upgrade

    Hi all,
    I have a ten-year old Epson GT5500 scanner plugged onto an ISA card.
    This was quite hard to get it working under linux but it worked well untill yesterday last update.
    I have the following error output when trying to load aha152x module:
    # modprobe aha152x
    FATAL: Error inserting aha152x (/lib/modules/2.6.27-ARCH/kernel/drivers/scsi/aha152x.ko): No such device
    I have the following line in /etc/modules.conf:
    alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x options aha152x aha152x=0x140,9
    How can I get the scanner back to work?
    Thanks.

    fwojciec wrote:Did you build the module yourself?  If so you might have to rebuild it for the new kernel version.
    No. The configuration to get the scanner working under linux comes from a how-to and remains valid after kernel upgrades -- until yesterday. It does not need any module building, only loading.

  • Loading modules when using enter-pssession

    Hello
    I see some thing that appears unusual to me.
    Server1 is running PowerShell v2
    Client1 is running PowerShell v2
    If I am logged directly to Server1 and do
    $Host
    $PSVersionTable
    I get the result I would expect e.g. version 2 and PSVersion2. I can also load Modules in the normal way directly from Server1 e.g. Import-Module ...
    From Client1 (or any other client) if I Enter-PSSession Server1 then
    $Host
    $PSVersionTable
    I get the following verion 1 and PSVersion 2
    So basically even though the PSVersion is 2 the Host (e.g. PS-Session Host) is version 1, and therefore I cannot load Modules as I get the following error if I try
    Import-Module : The current PowerShell host is: 'ServerRemoteHost' (version 1.0.0.0). The module
    'C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\pspki\pspki.psd1' requires a minimum PowerShell ho
    st version of '2.0' to execute.
    So it occurs to me the "Host" execution environment you get with PS-Session is a cut down version e.g. version 1
    Is this normal? is there a work around for it?
    Thanks All

    What is a client system? YOu say "client1" which is some PC that is not a "server class" PC is running PowerShell V2.  What does that mean.
    At any V2 system prompt this is what V2 displays:
    PS C:\scripts> $host
