[SOLVED] to install Canon MP520, I have to remove gcc??? (Arch64)

process reads as such...
[root@myhost adonus]# pacman -S gcc-multilib

gcc-multilib is required for lib32cups, which is required by the MP520 packages... before I do anything to bork my system, I just wanna make sure that all I need to do 'pacman -Rd gcc' followed by 'pacman -S gcc-multilib'...

make sure multilib is uncommented in /etc/pacman.conf
check for updated mirrors @ https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus
uncomment 2 or 3 of the most up-to-date from your area in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
pacman -Sy (or pacman -Syy)
update everything: pacman -Syu
install gcc-multilib: pacman -S gcc-multilib
allow all packages to be removed and replaced as requested
install MP520 package(s) from AUR (suggest clyde in place of pacman for this purpose): clyde -S cnijfilter-mp520
NOTE: if you don't already have clyde installed, grab from AUR package web page and install manually, THEN use it.

I thought it was good to open all mirrors....
Pacman picks the first mirror on the list, if it's not working, tries the second and so on. If the first one works, but it's outdated, pacman will still use it - because it's working and you wanted it.
Pacman doesn't know if it's up to date or not - it only errors out if it can't find the package - you have an old filelist and haven't run 'pacman -Sy' in a long time.
Just a couple mirrors is enough for pacman :-)

If you are purchasing from the Mac App store, then you would drag the trial version to the trash first and empty trash (since the trial version has expired).
Launch the Mac App store > sign in with your Apple ID > purchase Aperture (this is cheaper than the previous retail version many of us purchased anyway).
Note - you can rename your Aperture Trial library as needed if you want to work with that one once the full version is installed.

  • New to MAC, trying to install CANON MP520

    Hello,
I'm new to MAC, I bought an iMAC 8,1 several days ago with operating system 10,5 (I guess?!...)
I'm still struggling to get rid of old window-habits, but first days working with this machine was fun!... until i tried to install my new flashy printer via wireless router...
The printer is a CANON MP520, the router a USR5461. Tried following the guidelines for installation provided by USR, but it doesn't seem to be up-to-date (Printcenter is not installed on my MAC while USR thinks it should be?!...). Anyway, tried it another way (a bit on intuition, a bit on forum searching) by adding it in printerlist:
    First choose tab “IP”
    Protocol: IPP
    Cue: nothing
    Host: ip of my router
Location: printer location as specified on router status page
Now, I downloaded a driver from canon website for MP520 on MAC, went pretty easy (downloading software is nice and easy on MAC, I must say), so I could select “CANON MP520” as driver.
OK, everything works fine, tried printing a page; result: error message “no pages found”
Searched some fora for a solution (in fact first USR website, but that didn’t help me a lot) and came up with this forum. I found a thread on a similar problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1605028&tstart=0), but to be honest, I don’t understand the solution (I tried re-installing the printer several times, same problem…)
It’s my first post here, sorry if this maybe is a trivial problem, but I’m new to all this and don’t know where to start looking for the solution, so if anyone can help me out here or redirect me to a more appropriate place to find help for this problem, please do so…
    Thank you!

Wish that Windows habits somehow related...
OS X has two kinds of print drivers - Carbon and CUPS. With Carbon drivers, the author/manufacturer gets to specify which comm protocol(s) will work. Your Canon driver is a Carbon driver, and works only with USB. IP printing > IPP is a CUPS protocol, and requires a CUPS-capable driver. Apple included Gutenprint drivers (CUPS drivers) to try to get around this problem (that they created by allowing two kinds of driver). You might need to update your Gutenprint to have your model supported (I'm not certain - you'll need to check):
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
Next issue - US Robotics uses a non-standard port number for IPP, so you'll have to use the Advanced IPP protocol so you can put in that non-standard port in the setup. (Click the '+' button to add a printer. This opens the Printer Browser. Then hold down the Option key and click More Printers; this lets you access the "Advanced" options from the first popup menu.) Select IPP using IPP or http (they're the same). Enter the URI like:
ipp://[IP address here]:1631/printers/[queue name] listed in USR manual

Hold c and reboot off the 10.6 disk, run the installer.
If the machine your upgrading is the 2006, I'd highly advise you stay on 10.6.8
It's a 5 year old machine, you're in the last life stages of that machine and 10.7 will push it right over the edge.
10.6 is a GOOD upgrade for that machine, faster than 10.7 or 10.5.
And 10.6 will run your 10.5 software, 10.7 will not.
Get iCloud with a new 10.8 machine coming out after this summer, seriously.
Your machine is too old to bother with Lion.
Or else you can learn yourself and use this link to get back to Snow, good luck finding your 10.5 programs.

  • Canon MP520 wont print

Has anyone had any issues trying to get the canon MP520 printer to work?
I have a windows machine which i have a canon MP520 installed and shared (USB plugged).
When i search via the mac it detects the MP520 and appears to install ok. There were no default drivers for this model, but i managed to find one on the canon website which i installed on my mac (and now appears in the list of drivers).
I'm new to the mac, so don't know too much else. I have tried all sorts of stuff and even tried resetting the print system. I have checked the cups logs and they read as follows:

  • Since installing mountain lion i have a problem with mail. when i delete a message close  and open mail the message has come back. please help!

Since installing Mountain Lion i have a problem with Mail. I delete a number of messages from the same person but keep the newest message in my Inbox. I actually delete them from the Trash. The next time i open Mail the deleted messages are back again. Can anybody please help as this is getting annoying. Thanks in Anticipation.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

My Macbook pro often won't start up since I installed Lion, and I have to shut it down using power button. My desktop icons don't appear and the dock won't open. I only have the little circle of color spinning endlessly. What's wrong now!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't install Canon EOS Digital Solution disk

    Hi,
Have got a problem installing 'EOS digital solution disk' which came with my Canon EOS 400D digital SLR camera. Here is a description of what happens:
I click on 'CANON EOS Digital Installer' icon as instructed. First something called 'MasterInstaller' launches, and I select 'Europe' then 'UK' when prompted. The main menu appears again and I select 'Install', then 'Next' then 'Easy Install'.
I 'Agree' the terms, then hit 'Next' in Starting Installation window.
At this point, 'Installer' launches and a window appears with the text "Preparing to install ImageBrowser" (with a blue striped barber pole type line beneath) but nothing happens. The blue stripes do not 'move' as is normally the case when something is working. It just locks up, and usually the Mac beachball of death will spin. I've tried leaving it ages to sort itself out, but nothing changes.
When I go into the 'Force Quit' option from the pull down menu in Finder, (as everything is stuck) the 'Installer' and 'MasterInstaller' are usually highlighted in red, I guess meaning they've either crashed or got lost. Sometimes the Finder joins in too (being highlighted in red).
I'm not running any other applications, and I've tried doing a Custom Install, (instead of 'Easy') and choosing only 1 application at a time, and disconnected my external drive but to no avail.
I tried emailing Canon, but they have just suggested I try loading it onto another Mac but I don't have one or access to one either.
    Some help would be appreciated.
P.S. Gave disk to my partner to try on his PC and he said it loaded ok, so I assume it's not a faulty disk.

So it still said Keys out of order ? That is a pretty serious error that Disk Utility rarely is able to repair. I would run it again and report to us exactly what is reported when you attempt a repair (not verify) please.
    Hi Dale,
    Well, the plot thickens....
I kept running the DU repair (about 5 or 6 times), and interestingly enough kept getting EXACTLY the same message:
    Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
    Keys out of order
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
    Repair completed
No details or other messages about what the specific problem was. (Is there a way to find out?)
Well, I took another look on the link you posted and ran an 'fsck'. (I still have no idea what that means but it sounded as if it may throw up some info.) Indeed it did and here's what appeared after I typed '/sbin/fsck -fy':
    ** /dev/rdiskOs9
    ** Root file system
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file
    ** Checking Catalog file
    diskOs9: 0x8 (UNDEFINED)
    Keys out of order
    (4, 1886)
    ** Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
    diskOs9: 0x8 (UNDEFINED)
** The volume Mac Hard Disk could not be repaired.
    sh-2.05a#
(Hopefully there aren't any typos, I just typed this in myself, having written down the info on paper.)
Obviously the DU knows there's a problem, but simply thinks it's fixing it every time I run a repair. A bit like Groundhog Day I guess....
    Now what??
    Cath

If in the message window it says that "...MSVCR80.dll was not found", go to this guys webpage: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/msvcr80-dll-not-found-missing -error.htm.  I followed his instructions exactly and problem solved.

  • Installing Canon MP600 printer

Cannot install Canon MP600 printer. I've cleared out all the old Canon software, then downloaded all latest drivers form Canon, but when I try to add the printer I get message
"An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer.
    successful-ok-conflicting-attributes"
Any ideas how to resolve this?

My mp600 installed perfect. If you have the cd that came with it, I just installed the included drivers and all went fine. Try trashing all the canon software again. Search with spotlight to see if any other canon programs are in folders elsewhere and trash them too. Then try reinstalling again. Even without installing the drivers, your mac should recognize and make usable the mp600 (it just has less print settings than the actual canon driver).

Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with installation of arch. When i boot with pendrive "made" with dd i get some "Install override security policy" (or something like that) anyway i can't "edit" pendrive after dd so i create MSDOS partition table and format as FAT32 and copy content of the iso to the pendrive. Boots the same so i googled that i have to overwrite grubx64.efi with loader.efi so i done that and it boots fine. But pendrive doesn't install grub it says that my system doesn't support efi, so i followed this and and from google i read about  i have to activate efivars with modprobe but it doesn't work either. I tried EFI install with VirtualBox but error still is the same. Anybody installs arch on UEFI machine ?? Ubuntu (and Xubuntu, Lubuntu...) & Fedora works fine with UEFI install. I don't want to move disk to MBR because of MBR limitations (for example only four primary partitions) and i have important data on the disk so i can't do that.
I tried Arch based distros and there are also problems with install. Manjaro after install shows that UEFI variables wasn't detect properly ( or something like that). Antergos doesn't boot because there is not necessary files (who even release that? this doesn't even work in virtual box) after adding these files i've get 30 seconds Arch problem because label is incorrect antergos says that label have to be ANTERGOS201311 and i can't give that label because FAT32 has 11 characters limitation and if i tried work it out with ext4 it doesn't work at all (there is no prefix UEFI in boot options). I can't also solve that with dd because i have to paste missing files to the pendrive and dd make pendrive unwritable.
Doesn't matter, issue solved. All i have to do is to
    mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

That all depends on the settings you give your VM, you can make it virtualize either a BIOS or a UEFI machine irrelevant of the host firmware.
    https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#efi
I'm not sure if UEFI is still considered experimental or how well it works, as I always just use BIOS mode.

  • Problems with installing Canon mp460

Im not able to install the drivers for my Canon MP460.
I dont got the install cd anymore, but have downloaded the new drivers from canons site.
I have done everything thats noted in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1322537
But it did not help. Beside I dont got the CanonPrinterDrivers.pkg file in the Macintosh HD, Library, Receipts folder.
When installing the drivers downloaded from the canon site I cant find it listed in "Printers and faxes" in the preferences pane.
    Anyone know what to do?

Hello sestian and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Canon driver for this machine has only been designed to work when the printer is directly connected to the Mac via USB. If you have it connected to a Windows share, then you will not find the Canon MP460 when you search through the Print Using menu.
Note that you cannot browse for the Canon driver at any stage. The driver software has been designed to select the print model automatically when the printer is detected during the Add printer stage. If the printer is not detected, then the driver is not added and the user does not have the ability to browse to it.
If you do have the printer directly connected to your Mac via USB, then you may have a problem with the cable, as the other person suggested.
