[Solved] UEFI - Do I have to remake the arch .iso?

Hi
I am really struggling getting Arch to install in UEFI mode.
I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface - however I still don;t know what i'm doing....
I have Fedora17 installed in UEFI mode already, my partition layout is
/dev/sda1 /boot/EFI
/dev/sda2 /boot
/dev/sda3 Swap
/dev/sda4  /
What steps do I have top do to get UEFI to work for Arch?
- Do I have to extract and re-master the arch iso to include EFI/UEFI?
- Do I have to create another EFI partition (as I already have one for Fedora17?
- I tried to install the install disk and it could see 2 of every partition (which suggests it wasn't working..)
Any help will be welcomed
Cheers

First time you broke fedora because you was using standard iso without uefi support.
Second time with arch you installed bootloader to mbr - most certainly this wasn't uefi install.
After this I have no idea what you have done
Now let's start fresh - how to install arch in uefi mode:
Make sure your disk has gpt partition table - if you went back to mbr, it very easy to format to gpt and create partitions with gparted
live cd. Efi partition should have boot flag active.
Download tpowas's archboot iso and just extract it to usb - using dd won't work for uefi.
When you boot, run "ls -1 /sys/firmware/efi/vars/ls -1". If there is output, uefi boot was successful.
At mountpoints setup step, mount efi partition at /boot/EFI.
Everything is same as in bios mode until the install bootloader step. Make sure you choose uefi bootloader
and x64 grub2 if you want to go with grub (for other options read wiki). Installing bootloader might fail - if it does
exit setup and chroot (don't forget mounting efi part). Install grub2 following these instructions.
And this shuld do it!

I'm not sure I can make sense of this but without asking too many questions, you can resolve your question by contacting iTunes direct.
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us
But they will be wondering about the reference to hacking and you feeling bad about getting something for free.
Best step in my view is to make sure you don't get similarly involved in future.  You must know roughly what you were doing.   Then writie it off to a not to be repeated experience.

  • SOLVED - modifying the arch .iso

Hi all. Apologies if I'm doing something obviously wrong. I'm trying to copy EFI/BOOT/loader.efi to EFI/BOOT/boot on the downloaded arch iso.
Reason for this is to boot the iso on my lennovo e71 which even with a BIOS update refuses to boot with the following error: 'failed to install override security policy'.
I've followed the steps on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Re … nstall_ISO
    Essentially using the command:
    "genisoimage -l -r -J -V "ARCH_201209" -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -c isolinux/boot.cat -o ~/arch-custom.iso ~/customiso"
The newly generated iso refuses to boot. Any ideas? (yes I did amend the label to that of the original image.)
    Thanks in advance
    Ian

    Are you actually using ARCH_201209?
I know you wrote you had modified the label "ARCH_YYYYMM", but double check it.
EDIT:  Did you modify 'archisolabel' in loader/entries/archiso-x86_64.conf or/and in arch/boot/syslinux/archiso.cfg?
I have noticed that the latest ISO (2014-08) has some file names changed in its internal structure. Some files have been moved to other places, too. Perhaps that is why you ISO doesn't boot.
I have modified my script to work with the new structure of the current ISO, and created modified ISO's that successfully start in both BIOS and UEFI configurations on my virtual machine. I can add the copying of those .efis and send you the script to use or to see what it looks like.
EDIT2:  No reply, so this information is for those who might look for an arch ISO image starting with a passwordless sshd service on a standard port. I have put my bash script in AUR, arch-headless. The script includes a commented out solution to the original poster's problem, as he suggested in post 3. You can uncomment it and try if it works, I have never done it.

  • [SOLVED] Does anyone really have a "rock stable" Arch?

Please see the  Rock Stable Arch Linux HOWTO  wiki page and contribute. The short answer to this thread for those who want to know if Arch can be really stable is yes.
Lately I've been looking into FreeBSD, but I haven't installed it because some of my important hardware (wireless card, etc.) are not supported until 8.0 and I would prefer to wait until the official release rather than run betas & RCs. In almost all of the comparisons between FreeBSD and Linux that I read, there are references to FreeBSD being far more stable than Linux because of the base system and how thought is put into how the programs at the base work together and the FreeBSD team makes sure everything is working correctly before deployment of a release. From what I've read, FreeBSD is designed with thought and effort put into how the base system should function to ensure stability and correctness, whereas Linux is grown as haphazard development and hacking is dropped onto the kernel piece by piece, with everything being an add on.
That doesn't sound very fair to Linux, for if that were 100% true, Linux wouldn't even work! The Arch Wiki elucidates that the people behind the Arch project put plenty of effort towards code-correctness, elegance, and cutting the BS out of the system, right?
So after reading up on FreeBSD and having some time to still enjoy Linux until FBSD 8.0 hits STABLE, I started to think that maybe Linux is still right for me, the best for me. After all, Arch takes everything the entire Linux community has to offer and allows us to put it together with pacman and the awesome AUR. The only problem is, as soon as I fired up my old reliable Arch install and did a pacman -Syu, I found that my nvidia driver was broken for this release and I would probably have to downgrade. I know it's probably an easy fix, but I really don't like when this kind of stuff happens. I get that feeling of finally finishing my configuration just the way I like it, finally conquering the beast that is Arch, and then a simple update causes a showstopper breakage.
Is this really possible to avoid? Is it because I'm using proprietary software that can't really be controlled and that going (almost) all open-source would help prevent this? How often do these breakages happen to you guys? Do you consider it a pain to fix or do you just shrug it off as part of the process of using Arch?
I used to not mind so much but that was when I was still configuring and it just felt like one extra step. Now I'd like to have that rock of a system I know (hope) Linux can be. I even considered switching to slackware or another distro, but I love Arch so much! It's just so perfect! But how can I avoid these kinds of breakages? I'd really rather not just accept them as a part of using Linux because that makes me feel like I'm using Windows and accepting the fact that my computer crawls and crashes every other day.
I know the easy post for you guys would be to tell me "just try FreeBSD/Slackware/other OS and leave me alone", but I really want to stay with Arch. I love the community, the documentation, the software, the everything! I feel it really is "Linux done right". But what about these update breakages?
One more question (well, two more, but related): Is it true that not updating for a long time and then doing a pacman -Syu can break your system? Do I have to update every day to keep Arch happy and stable?
Thanks everyone. Hopefully you guys can shed some light on this for me.

I got your message, so here's a reply:
I've walked the line between bleeding edge features and rock-solid stability for several years now.  I finally made a decision a few months ago and came down on the side of stability.  There really isn't a right answer to this question - it comes down to personal preference.
There is a lot to be said for a bleeding-edge rolling-release distro such as Arch.  I remember the time I ran my first pacman -Syu and felt awed at the fact that I was one of the first users to get the latest version of *.  However, I've grown more pragmatic since then.  Sure, it's fun to get the latest and "greatest"; but is it really worth it?  Are you really much more productive with the new version than you were with the old?  In my case, the answer was usually no.  I just don't care if my stuff is at the latest version (provided that the latest security updates are installled, that is!)
So, I started using Scientific Linux (a RHEL clone from CERN, Fermilab, and some other research institutes).  It has a fairly lightweight live CD available and works beautifully for me.  My kernel version is 2.6.18 (with some newer drivers).  Do I care?  Not really.  It works and it does what I tell it to do.  There are some exceptions.  While I mostly browse with elinks, sometimes I need to use Firefox for Flash or whatnot.  And I like to have that in the latest version.  So, I just download the latest binary and run it from my home directory.  Problem solved.
You don't have to go as far as I did.  There are some other choices:
Slackware.  I know you decided that Slack wasn't for you, but it's a remarkable system and it can be pretty modern if you choose to keep it up-to-date.  Even if you end up not liking it, I feel that Slackware's package management (or lack thereof) is something every user should experience.  It gives you a new outlook on the KISS philosophy.
SliTaz. I include SliTaz because it is the perfect system to customize completely.  If you want it up to date, it will be.  New versions not in the repos?  Build them; it's easy.  SliTaz is what you make of it, provided that you are willing to put in the time.
Arch.  You can stay with Arch (sounds like that's where you're at right now).  If you want the latest software just for the sake of it, or use bloated amalgamations that are hard to update yourself (*cough* desktop environments *cough*), Arch is the best rolling-release system I've used.  The team is dedicated and this community is great.
Think it over and come to your own decision.

  • [SOLVED] Many modules are not loaded in the Arch USB key installation.

    Hello!
I installed Arch Linux on my USB key. I did it few months ago and it worked, I had portable arch.
Yesterday I decided to make a fresh installation. Unfortunately after booting it from my USB key
most of the modules were not loaded. Because of that I couldn't start the X server and connect to
the internet (ethernet card was not detected).
Even after loading the module which corresponds to my ethernet card manually (modprobe e1000e) it was not
    displayed in the lsmod list.
I though "maybe I screwed something up during the installation?". To find out I used GParted to copy
my OS partition (perfectly working Arch Linux installed on the hard drive) to the USB key. Of course I changed the UUID of the USB partition.
After booting it I was suprised because the situation did not change - modules that are loaded on my main system for some
reason were not loaded on it's exact copy placed on the USB key.
I have no idea why my portable OS is acting like this.
Commands below were executed on another PC so don't look for the e1000e module.

  • HELP: I sync my iphone ios 4 to another iphone ios5, sync was completed but after a few mins, iphone will auto restart and freezes at the home screen which I can't unlock. I have to hold the "home"   "off" button to restart the phone.

    Dear all, please hel!!
I sync my iphone ios 4 to another iphone ios5, sync was completed but after a few secs, the iphone with the IOS 5 firmware will auto restart and freezes at the home screen which I can't unlock. It will then freeze for a few secs before repeating the restart phase again and again and again.
To solve this issue, I have to hold the "home"  + "off" button to restart the phone. Afterwhich, it will restart the phone. However, although my stuff are still on the phone, all my sms are gone.
    Can someone please assist urgently.
My data was transferred from another iphone 3GS which is running an IOS 4.0.1 to another 3GS running ios 5.0.1
Is there a serious compatibility issue with both firmware?
    Please help.
    Thanks!

Can't I just set up Exchange as one of my calendars in ical?
Only if you're running Snow Leopard and your employer will allow access (different than iPhone/mobile device access, so most likely not), but not needed - keep reading.
Is it really true that I have to choose between syncing Exchange with work server OR syncing iCal with personal Macbook?
No. It was true, but with the v3.0 software that changed - you can now sync your Exchange contacts and calendar over the air, and your Address Book and iCal via iTunes over the docking cable.
What is the best work around for this?
None needed. When you set up the exchange account, and choose to turn on syncing of contacts and calendars, you will be prompted to remove all other data, or keep it on the iPhone. Choose the keep option. Note that in that case, your personal data will not be uploaded to the Exchange server - the iPhone keeps them separate (although you can choose to view them in a merged fashion).
I have this set up on my phone (Exchange calendar along side personal and other calendars from iCal). Same for contacts. Works great.

  • Booting Arch-ISO from USB-Stick in UEFI mode fails

    Hi there,
I'm running an Asrock H77M-ITX UEFI mobo. On this system I've already installed Arch on a Samsung 830 SSD (GPT formatted) - but in BIOS legacy mode because I've written the Arch-ISO image with "dd" to an USB-Stick (and UEFI boot mode wasn't even presented at boot).
    Out of curiosity I've re-formatted the stick and copied Arch-ISO following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … B_from_ISO.
Now I could start the ISO in UEFI mode, but it failed to start gummiboot with the "No loader found. Configuration files in \loader\entries\*.conf are needed." error message, concerning a problem with gummiboot.
Following some advice on the forum, I did this:
    - install refind-efi 0.4.7-2
    - copy /usr/lib/refind/refindx64.efi to [USB]/EFI/boot and renaming it to bootx64.efi (i.e. replacing the original bootx64.efi from gummiboot)
    - Create a new file in the same directory ([USB]/EFI/boot/) called refind.conf
    - Add this to it:
    textonly
    scanfor manual
    menuentry Arch {
    loader /arch/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz
    initrd /arch/boot/x86_64/archiso.img
    options "gpt loglevel=7 add_efi_memmap none=UEFI_ARCH_x86_64"
With this I can launch Arch-ISO from the USB-Stick in UEFI mode and I can choose Arch from rEFIND. Then Arch-ISO starts booting but it always stops at the same point with this message:
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/' device did not show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [rootfs /]#
sdb is the USB-Stick from which I start Arch-ISO. Again - I didn't use dd to write the ISO to the stick.
Maybe this is pretty easy to solve, but I have to admit that I'm somewhat stuck

WonderWoofy wrote:See what the difference is between archiso and archboot maybe?  Seriously, have you made any effort whatsoever?
    Of course. Read:
    The "Main Page" ( https://www.archlinux.org/ ) states:
"You've reached the website for Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible Linux® distribution that tries to Keep It Simple."
    "Keep It Simple". Yeah!
In line with that, the "The Arch Way" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way ) states:
"The following five core principles comprise what is commonly referred to as the Arch Way, or the Arch Philosophy, perhaps best summarized by the acronym KISS for Keep It Simple, Stupid."
The ArchWiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/ ) links to several other pages, such as these:
The "Forum Etiquette" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Forum_Etiquette ) states under "Ineffective Discussion":
"Arch is a Do It Yourself community" and "treat others as you would be treated; respect them and their views". I am very much a "do it yourself" person -- that's why I like The Arch Way. I also go by the Golden Rule stated here.
Now, everyone is a newbie at some time. I and other posters here are obviously newbies with respect to ArchLinux. Even experts were newbies at one time. Newbies, by definition, do not necessarily know what they're doing, or where to find information. Hence, Arch's "Beginners' Guide" and such. Hence, posts on this board from newbies asking for help.
As regards initial installation of ArchLinux, and consistent with the above, the FAQ ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAQ ), under "Q) Arch needs an installer. Maybe a GUI installer", states:
"A) Since installation doesn't occur often (read the rest of this article to know more about what rolling release means), it is not a high priority for developers or users. The Installation Guide and Beginners' Guide have been fully updated to use the command-line method. If you're still interested in using an installer, consider using Archboot."
So the basic installation instructions explicitly state that Archboot is not needed.
The "Installation Guide" ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide ) says nothing about either Archboot or Archiso.
The "Beginners Guide" ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide ) says nothing about either Archboot or Archiso.
The "Archboot" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archboot ) is consistent with the above information, because it states:
"Archboot is a set of scripts to generate bootable media for CD/USB/PXE.
It is designed for installation or rescue operation."
    The "Archiso" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archiso ) states:
"Archiso is a small set of bash scripts that is capable of building fully functional Arch Linux based live CD and USB images. It is a very generic tool, so it could potentially be used to generate anything from rescue systems, install disks, to special interest live CD/DVD/USB systems, and who knows what else."
So the pages describing both Archboot and Archiso clearly state that these tools are oriented towards already-existing installations -- even though it seems that they might be used, in certain circumstances, for initial installations.
I happen to be very new at playing around with installing Linux distros (although I've used Unix/Linux as a regular user for more than 30 years), and am brand new with respect to ArchLinux. I only began playing with it this past Saturday. So I would expect a bit of useful help as opposed to "RTFM!" I will soon get past the need to RTFM for basic tasks, but I have a way to go.
The fact is that for me and a number of other new ArchLinux users, the installation guides simply do not work. C.f. my post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153170 . I've done a lot of googling as well as searching the archives on this board, and others have come up against the same show-stopping installation problems that I have. I and others have posted to several recent threads on this board, trying to get past the problems, so far with no success.
    Now, the.ridikulus.rat had written:
"You guys are using Archboot's kernel options for Archiso. Thats the issue in both the cases."
Given that neither of these sets of scripts were used by me or swordfish, this comment is not useful.
Given the above, can you or anyone else tell us what Archiso or Archboot might do to help us with our installation problems? Also, can you tell us how we, as newbies, ought to have found out how these might help?
    Alan

This is a scam. Do not phone these people, at best they will charge you for unnecessary 'cleaning' and at worst they will gain access to your Mac and steal your data. You've probably managed to install some 'adware' which is producing this fake warning. 'Adwaremedic' should remove it and is safe to use - please see

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened.  I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

My iphone 4s has stopped working and the wifi warranty ends in 30 days, I spoke with Apple support in Brazil and all steps performed as the attendant handed me this afternoon. I want to know if my problem will be solved or if I have to fight in court to get what is rightfully mine and equipment that really works.
    Thanks, André Garzo

I live in Brazil and ensuring the apple does not work here and the nearest town for a possible exchange of equipment is 150 miles away

    Hi Don ...
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store, rather than your actual geographic location."

Usually the HDD is the frist place to look.  Use the original install disk and start up the MBP with the C key down.  Go through the installation process until you see on the display a menu bar on top.
    Click on UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu select Disk Utility.
Open Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
    What are the results?
    Also look at these articles:
