[SOLVED] Unable to Boot Windows 7 from GRUB

I recently reinstalled Arch onto my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad t520) and have been having problems with Grub. For the last week I've been having trouble getting it to run grub at boot at all, only being able to run windows 7 by flagging it as the bootable drive. The other day I finally got it to boot into grub, and from grub I can boot into Arch. However, I can not boot into windows 7 through grub. When I attempt to, it throws an error:
Invalid EFI file path
I'm somewhat new to arch, and especially new to efi bootloading and such. Right now the only way I can get into windows is either booting from the arch install disk > boot other os and specifying partition 2 (where I have windows installed) or by pressing f12 at boot. When I do this (not sure what the term is, if anyone knows please tell me), it brings up a menu asking where I want to boot with "arch_efi" "cd drive" "Hard drive" etc. I choose hard drive and it will then boot to windows by default. Booting normally takes me to grub where I can boot into arch but not windows. If there's any more info you need please let me know and I'll try to provide it. Thanks in advance.
Also, here is my current partition setup
/dev/sda1 /boot/efi
/dev/sda2 Windows7
/dev/sda3 Extended partition containing sda 5,6, & 7
/dev/sda4 swap
/dev/sda5 /boot
/dev/sda6 /
/dev/sda7 /home
UPDATE
Terminator seems to be right (still on a roll!), so I wiped the partition I had grub on, removed grub, and installed syslinux. Now I have another problem that I'm hoping can be solved in the same thread to avoid another. It boots to syslinux no problem, and I can boot to windows from there all good, but when I select arch I get:
Root device mounted successfully but /sbin/init does not exist
I haven't been able to look for solutions too much on my own, but any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Terminator wrote:If I understand it correctly, what you are trying is impossible: you are trying to boot windows using UEFI on a disk with MBR partitioning. Windows 7 only supports UEFI on discs with GPT partitioning but AFAIK, extended partitions only exist in MBR partitioning.
i also saw this in the arch wiki, but i have a brand new lenovo ideapad y570 running windows 7 64-bit that i'm in the process of setting up for someone, and it has what i think is an efi system partition but the disk uses mbr partitioning.  does anyone know why this might be, or is there a way i can verify that the system is actually being booted via bios-mbr?

  • [Solved] Unable to boot Arch off SUSE GrUB

    Hi,
I have several OS installed on my machine. I used to boot everything including Arch but BSD, Solaris & PCBSD with GrUB2 off UbuntuStudio. Earlier today I installed SUSE GrUB on sda and now I am unable to boot Arch. I've used SUSE GrUB earlier and was able to boot Arch off it.

After experiencing some issues with 2.6.38 and my Intel video card (external monitor support). I decided to go back to 2.6.37 for the time being.

Then I rebooted and to my surprise I got stuck very early during the boot process.

Hopefully I had a 2.6.39rc3-mainline entry in my grub so I selected it and was able to boot as before. I then upgraded from 2.6.37 back to 2.6.38 and guess what... still unable to boot (same message).
What could be the root cause?
    Thanks

Finally I got both 2.6.37 and 2.6.38 to boot again but boy it wasn't pretty. Before I start here is what I did before the boot issue.
    - Running     2.6.38.2-1 from [Core]
    - I also have 2.6.39rc3 from [miffe] repo with a dedicated entry in Grub (testing & recovery)
    - Downgraded to 2.6.37 using from /var/cache/pacman/pkg:
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-api-headers-2.6.37-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    - Rebooted
    - Boot would stop early during the process
    - Booted 2.6.39rc3
    - Upgraded to 2.6.38.2-1 via
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.38.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.38.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-api-headers-2.6.38.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    - Rebooted
    - Boot would stop early during the process
    - Booted 2.6.39rc3
    - Downgraded to 2.6.37 using from /var/cache/pacman/pkg:
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-api-headers-2.6.37-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    - Rebooted
    - Boot would stop early during the process
    - Booted 2.6.39rc3
    - Copied via USB kernel26.img and vmlinuz26 from a friend's PC (running same Arch configuration with 2.6.38 kernel)
    - Rebooted
    - This time, my friend's 2.6.38 would start
    - Upgraded to 2.6.38.2-1 via
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.38.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.38.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-api-headers-2.6.38.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    - Rebooted
    - This time, my 2.6.38 would start
    - Downgraded to 2.6.37 using from /var/cache/pacman/pkg:
    pacman -U kernel26-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.37-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-api-headers-2.6.37-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    - Rebooted
    - Again I can boot from 2.6.37
So overall there have been two issues. One when dowgrading from 2.6.38 to 2.6.37 while running 2.6.38 and then when downgrading to 2.6.37 or 2.6.38 while running 2.6.39.
A bit confusing I admit but I think there is a glitch here that does bad thing when generating kernel26.img

  • Macbook Pro Retina unable to boot windows 7 from USB

    I have an unusual problem
i cannot install windows 7 on my macbook pro retina. Thats not the weird part. This is what happens.
    - I use bootcamp.
    - I make bootable USB.
    - Download drivers.
    - Install windows 7
    - Select partition size as 50 or 60 or 70 GB
    - mac restarts, then a black screen appears, a cursor on top left appears just for a second and then dissappears and i am left with a black screen with nothing on it. (No text or cursors)
I have tried installing 32 bit, 64 bit windows 7.
Weird thing is i had encountered this problem before and did a bit of searching n found out that you cannot upgrade to 64bit from 32bit. But thats not the issue here. A fix given to that problem worked for me as well. Make a bootable usb with 32bit windows and manually remove all non-hidden files on it and replace with non-hidden files of a 64bit win7. It worked for me then. Win7 installed. But recently i got battlefield 3 and needed additional space to install so i had to remove win7 and repartition. Now no solution is working. Not even the replacing 32bit files with 64bit files.
I really wanna game!! Please help!!

    SOLVED:
    64bit still acts cocky.
But i tried that work around with another USB and it worked. Just Like that
    Cocky Mac.
Create USB with 32bit OS, replace non-hidden files with non-hidden files of 64bit OS of windows 7.

  • Unable to boot Windows XP in a dual boot setup

I have Windows XP installed on my desktop, and decided to install Arch onto the desktop's second hard drive (space considerations), and installed Grub2 as the bootloader onto the second hard drive. I'm not able to boot Windows XP from the Grub2 menu on boot (I can boot the other entries, and can still boot XP by switching the order of the hard drives around in BIOS).
I've used Grub2 on my laptop for over a year now, and I've never had problems using it to triple boot Ubuntu, Arch and Windows Vista.
I created a custom entry for Windows XP (from various forum posts on this site and elsewhere):
    40_custom:
    menuentry "Windows XP (loader)" {
    insmod ntfs
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod chain
    set root=(hd1)
    drivemap -s hd0 hd1
    chainloader +1
When I select the Windows XP entry, all I get is a black screen, and all I can do is reboot with ctrl+alt+del.
I went ahead and installed os-prober from the AUR:
    ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/09_os-prober ###
    menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (on /dev/sdb1)" --class windows --class os {
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod ntfs
    set root='(hd1,msdos1)'
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 50ACE008ACDFE68E
    drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
    chainloader +1
    ### END /etc/grub.d/09_os-prober ###
But I get the same black screen when I select this entry from the grub menu. Can anyone tell me what the correct entry to boot Windows XP should be?

I'd honestly just recommend installing legacy grub, or better yet LILO, the people who work on GRUB/A lot of gnu software seem to think it's a great idea to just add and add and add pointless and bloated features to things that don't need it, GRUB is a perfect example of this, and so is the coreutils, 750 lines of code is used for 'cat' whereas on an operating system such as plan9 about 40 lines of code is used to do exactly the same thing.
On legacy grub it's as simple as
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
Which would be able to let you boot into windows on /dev/sda1

  • Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

Read https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5043762?start=0&tstart=0 to discover you can't do it.

No grub legacy does not support GPT partitions as stated in the wiki. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gr … cessary.3F
try syslinux. its simpler than the mess that is grub2 (IMO, of course )
So, as I have read what I have to do is the following:
    Install syslinux
    Execute
    # syslinux-install_update -i -a -m
    for an "automatic" installation
Create and configure syslinux.cfg (I think I'll ask for some help here)
    Make it graphical:
    # cp /usr/lib/syslinux/bios/vesamenu.c32 /boot/syslinux/
    Reboot
It should work like that. Am I right?

  • Trouble booting Windows 8 from mSATA SSD drive on HP Envy

I’m having an issue booting Windows 8 from my mSATA SSD drive (I believe that’s the correct terminology, it connects directly to the motherboard.)  I have a HDD that, it appears to me, it is trying to boot from.  The bios does not let me specifically select the boot drive, just disk.  I can boot from the SDD if I either remove the HDD or go through boot options and select to boot from an EFI file. A little background – I’ve had this running Windows from the SSD drive since I got it (installed that way) and using the HDD for storage.  My SSD drive had been removed and Windows installed on the HDD (since this is the HP forum I won't get into how this happened when I sent my laptop in for an unrelated repair.)  Seems I should be able to get it booting from the SSD again since it has not changed.  I’ve since removed the partitions and reformatted the drive.  I also tried setting up the EFI files on the HDD using BCDBOOT, maybe I didn’t need to/did it wrong/something else.  Seems this is not an uncommon issue but trying various things I’ve not yet been successful.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Ralph,
thanks a lot for the helpful information! But the problem still persists, and I don't know what's wrong about the installation. I again checked the case and device are fully compatible with Windows 8 on USB 3 and the current boot camp drivers are installed - so everything should work perfectly fine as Windows 8 does natively support booting from external USB-3-devices.
I personally still assume it's rather a driver related problem as the external SSD doesn't even show up whilst booting into the boot menu with "Alt" pressed - I can only choose to boot from the external SSD within the "start volume" menu in OSX (which then doesn't work out when rebooting, unfortunately). I mean, if there was a chance to boot from the external SSD with the configuration I got right now, but OSX/the iMac just "doesn't know" it shall boot from the external partition and therefore rather chooses the internal boot camp partition, the SSD would at least show up in the boot menu when pressing "Alt" on start-up, or do I go completely wrong? I even tried to rename the internal bootcamp partition (which did not work out) or disable it in order to prevent OSX/the iMac to boot from the internal bootcamp partition, but it didn't help: After rebooting it again chose the internal boot camp partition to start from.
Might the deletion of the internal partition be worth a try? Meaning is there a realistic chance that the issue might be caused by that? I would give it a try although I really don't wanna loose the internal boot camp partition for no good reason (btw: would it be possible to clone an image back from the external SSD to the internal HDD then?). Or do you maybe have any other idea what driver could miss resp. could be wrong about the installation so the boot process from the external SSD fails...?
Again MANY MANY THANKS in advance for your further assistance, everybody!!

  • Unable to boot Windows 7 Premium from an external harddrive

I recently gained an interest in playing microsoft based games, and just recently got my late 2013 macbook pro retina 15". I have been trying for several hours for the last two days to get bootcamp to boot Windows 7 Premium from a 500GB external harddrive without re-partiitioning my internal harddrive. I can get to the first screen of the Windows 7 Install asking about language, but neither my keyboard or mousepad respond with the windows installer. I assume this is because Windows 7 premium does not have USB 3.0 capability. Is there a workaround for this that doesn't involve partitioning my internal drive?

That's all fine and good, but I would strongly prefer not to have to use internal drive space for Windows. Even If I were to use the internal drive to install it, I would still run into the same problems of not having a keyboard or trackpad as I've seen other users having issues with. It stands to reason that if I had a working keyboard and mouse that I would be able to install it to an external hard drive, using a workaround method found here:
    http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.fr/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external.h tml
If I had to partition my internal drive, what would be the absolute minimum amount of space I would need?

Oh, looking at your setup, it would seem that your system is likely still configured to boot to /dev/sdd (the windows drive).
As a user with numerous drives, you should be aware that using /dev/sdXY to identify your disks is a bad idea.  There is no gaurantee that Arch will be /dev/sde every time, nor that windows will be /dev/sdd.  You should use either filesystem labels (LABEL= or /dev/disk/by-label) or UUIDs (UUID= or /dev/disk/by-uuid).  Though if you are using GPT, there is also the option of the PARTLABEL as well (which are the labels you create within the partitioner).

  • [Solved] Unable to boot (startup job is running)

    Hi there!
Today I went home and tried to boot my laptop there, but was unable to boot Arch.
Before I went home I did a system update using  ' sudo pacman -Syu '  and shut the laptop off normally. Right now I get the following message whilst booting:
" A startup job is running for dev-disk...25EFDCE0.device"
It fails after 1 min. 30s and shows a time out error for dependency /mnt/6776F38425EFDCE0, and refuses to boot. I waited for 5 min. but the only thing working at that stage is the shut down button (which appears to enter a normal shutdown mode).
Grub 2 is functioning; Windows 8 boots up fine (same HDD); though all options to boot arch fail because of the 'startup job error message'.
Do any of you know how I can fix this, or how to boot/fix arch such that I can attempt to fix it? Based on a search trough this forum it might be an error in FSTAB,  although all cases reported on this forum appear to boot normally after the 'a startup job is running 'error message'.
    Many thanks.

    Thank you for your response.
Changing the UUID's to /dev/sdaX did not do it's magic, unfortunately. The ' a start job'  message is gone, the boot however gets stuck at
/dev/sda2 clean .... (beginning of boot)
Unfortunately I did not properly save the back-up of my fstab file, so the initial set up is lost. Was able to acces arch using alt+f2 and have restored it manually with
    lsblk -f
It currently looks like this. I did have a line to automount my data partition (/dev/sda4, label: Data), but didn' t know how to restore that one as that line got deleted too.  My gut says this automount was causing the initial error, but it should boot up normally with the current fstab file, right?

  • My iMac can't boot Windows 7 From USB while my Macbook Pro can do it

I install Windows 7 64 bit and rEFIt into a USB hard disk and hope to boot from my iMac 27" (2010 Mid). However, it shows that no boot deivce is found.
If I plug the SAME disk to my Macbook Pro 17" (2009 Mid), it can boot Windows 7 without any problem.
I tried with Linux and get same result, iMac says no boot device while my Macbook Pro can boot it without problem.
I tried experiment for weeks and still can't get iMac work.
I think it is very abnormal and I wonder if someone can tell me how to fix it or any directory to solve this problem.

My iMac runs snow leopard and my MacBook pro runs Lion. Both of them are updated with latest updated. I just get one external USB hard disk with Windows 7 32 bit installed and magically, my iMac can boot it from rEFIt. However, I don't know what makes it works. I tried to make same configuration, software and steps on other USB hard disks for hundreds times but I can repeat it again. All other attempt can make USB hard disk boot on MacBook Pro but not iMac only.
