[SOLVED] - upgrading lib32-glibc 64-bit fails but doesn't!?
On the original bauerbill -Syu I get the error message below, on subsequent ones everything is fine and dandy. Is that expected behaviour?

[SOLVED] Upgrades broke glibc
At least I think that's what happened. I usually upgrade with a 'yaourt -Syu --aur --devel', select no to edit PKGBUILDs, and if it's been a while opt not to use existing sources and instead downloading everything again. I've now got a whole schwack of programs that don't want to start - nautilus, gnome-terminal, evince - and a couple that have issues that may or may not be related - chromium, firefox (webkit ?) - and crash whenever I try to download a file.
When I try to start nautilus et al I get:

multilib/lib32-glibc 2.14-4 [installed]
Some threads suggest telling glibc to continue after receiving a memory free error by setting MALLOC_CHECK_=1 but this did not work for me. Would it be advisable to downgrade glibc? If so how is that done in Arch, I'm relatively new to this distribution.
Thanks for any help.

The grep part is handy (but he should grep for the package name), as pacman searches the whole 'pacman -Qi' output:
[karol@black ~]$ pacman -Qs syslog
local/perl-device-modem 1.54-1 [0,12 MB]
Perl extension to talk to modem devices connected via serial port
local/syslog-ng 3.2.4-3 [1,16 MB] (base)
Next-generation syslogd with advanced networking and filtering capabilities
'--quiet' doesn't help of course:
[karol@black ~]$ pacman -Qqs syslog
perl-device-modem
syslog-ng
Why would I want perl-device-modem if I'm searching for syslog?

[solved]Just made a 32-bit chroot, but have some issues
I can't run anything from it as a normal user. It says the user does not exist. Was I supposed to create a new user in chroot-land?
How can I change my PS1 in .bashrc to tell me when I'm working in the chroot?
Last edited by pogeymanz (2008-06-16 22:39:09)The chroot has its own /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow, so yes, you need to recreate the user there. It would be kind of silly if the chroot used the same config files as the real /, wouldn't it
And if you recreate that user, you'll probably want to copy over your real .bashrc and make a slight modification to the PS1 line. -
[SOLVED] lib32-glibc conflicting files
Hi,
After the qt upgrade i had to remove Skype and when i wanted to install it again i had to uncomment the [multilib] line from /etc/pacman.conf (for my x64 system).
When i uncommented it, i run -Syu command i this occured. I am not sure do i have to remove all those files or i have to do something else?
Any kind of help would be appreciated (i tried to search similar problems on forum but i couldn't find it).

Last edited by grmix (2013-03-12 06:39:01)Well, few days ago i noticed that i didn't uncomment multilib line from /etc/pacman.conf file. After i uncommented it and ran "sudo pacman -Syu" that happened.
I had some problems with updating arch and glibc (not lib32-glibc) few months ago (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154391) but i solved it. Maybe that is somehow related to my actual problem. I really don't know.
So i can type that command without fear for my system? Nice . -
time capsule drop wifi connection issue .I have already upgraded new firmware 7.7.3 but problem in not solve i am very confuse to resolving this issue.also i attached my log here.

Javaws 64-bit fails to installer newer JRE (Java7u6 auto-upgrading to u7)
Hi,
I have a machine with an previous version of java installed (tried with 1.7.0_06).
My Jnlp file is set to automatically download the latest JRE. This works fine if the JRE installed is 32-bit. But if the user has downloaded the x64 bit version (on windows 7), everything works, except when I change the required version spec to 1.7.0_07.
The confirmation dialog to install 1.7.0_07 comes up but fails, as it tries to download and run the 32-bit installer while the javaws is 64-bit. Shouldn't the 64-bit version download a 64-bit version when auto-downloading?
The user is running javaws from the commandline
javaws.exe http://myserver/myapp.jnlp
h3. This is the jnlp file generated by javaws to auto download the JRE

Edited by: 889232 on Oct 4, 2012 7:13 AMHi outpaddling,
Remember, you tried the "cacls" command and it did not work for you. I spent sometime on it and found that on Win7, there's command called "takeown" on Win7, which allows an administrator to recover access to a file/folder that was denied by re-assigning file ownership.
Could you try the following?
Note: You must elevate the level of permissions for Win 7 with UAC enabled.
On Windows 7
Choose Start > Programs > Accessories.
Right-click on Command Line and select Run As Administrator.
If Error 1321 is being caused due to some file e.g. if it's ACE.dll, then it's containing folder e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0" is to be mentioned in the below command line. The below command in blue can be typed at the command line and the end press Enter Key.
C:\Windows\system32>takeown /f "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0" /r /d y && icacls "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0" /grant administrators:F SYSTEM:F /t
After running the command, you should be seeing something like this,
Successfully processed 1367 files; Failed processing 0 files
And then try installing Reader 9.3.3 from http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3.3/enu/AdbeRdr933_en_US.exe
Hope, it helps. -
I have a sony laptop with window 7 64 bit initially which I upgraded to windows 8 64 bit. But due to formatting later, I had to reinstall the windows and this time I installed windows 8 32 bit. Now I have tried installing iTunes for 64 bit windows 8 as well as 32 bit Windows 8 but none of them is getting installed. The message I get is, "this programme is not compatible for your pc" (or words to that affect since I dont remember the exact words but this is the meaning).
Can some body send me the link to the right file please. I need iTunes to transfer files from my iPod and iPhone to my laptop.
RegardsHi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

Thanks bluebanana 66Hi bluebanana 66,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a few reasons why you might receive this message after installing iTunes. You may need to verify that iTunes has been completely removed before trying to install again. See this article for the steps to completely remove and reinstall iTunes:

I have an IAMc 4.1 with intel core duo. Upgraded from tiger to snow leopard but cannot get safari to run in 64 bit. Is this because my older IMac won't support 64 bit?
Hi,
the Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit only processor and not capable of 64-bit.
Only the Core 2 Duo and later processors are capable of 64-bit.
Sorry

Last edited by mpz (2012-10-02 12:50:40)Glibc is a very basic part of the system on which *many* (most?) other programs and tools rely. Glibc provides shared libraries that are used by nearly every program - if you've ever looked at any C code, near the top you'll see lines like "#include <stdlib.h>" and "#include <stdio.h>", these header files are provided by glibc. The header files are not necessary for your computer to run (but are to compile anything new), but the libraries that are referred to by those headers are required. If glibc is gone, those shared library files are gone. Without these basic shared libraries, only statically linked binaries, or programs that don't require these very fundamental libraries can run. As nothing is statically linked (by default) in arch, the absence of glibc results in a severely handicapt system. If you are curious, you can google around on "C standard libraries" and "dynamic linking".
But all that is rather 'academic'. To fix your system follow techryda's advice. Also see the wiki page on chroot, or the many other threads of other users who found creative ways of botching the glibc update. Simply tryng to copy glibc files over would almost certainly lead to a whole new set of headaches - but a little reading of the appropriate docs should make this relatively easy to fix with a live media, chroot, and pacman. -

Hi, my mail applicatin is not working properly. It says cannot get main...the connection to the server failed but everything else is working ok. How can I solve this problem?
The connectivity test indicated that there was a problem with the user's ActiveSync folder, typically fixed by checking the box "Allow inheritable permissions ...".
Since it already was checked and even by removing the inherited permissions and then re-inheriting them didn't do the trick, I ended up just deleting the whole thing and then made a new duplicate account and blank mailbox. That was pretty drastic
but it fixed the problem. After restoring his mailbox contents from backup, the user is now a happy camper.
The connectivity test tool was helpful because the external URL was blank so I filled in the URL. But ActiveSync was working fine for everybody without the URL before although I don't know why it did work without it.
The other funny thing is on one of my iPads I am able to synch my mailbox and also the user's mailbox but on another iPad it just wouldn't synchronize when it worked before I added the external URL. The iPads have the same OS version so I
just don't understand it. Oh well.
Thanks for your help. That was a good tip!

Can I upgrade from Vista 32 bit to Win 7 64 bit on hp pavillion d4790y?
I have 2 gig ram, but really need to speed it up to 8 gig. I'd like to also get win 7 for the desktop. Before I get any of this, I need to know since my current OS is 32 bit but 64 bit capable, if I install windows 7 64 bit will it upgrade from 32 to 64? And then will the 8 gb RAM actually work if I purchase that as well? Will I run into any problems the hardware inside (processors or motherboard (intel core 2 cpu [email protected] ghz))? I don't understand 32 bit to 64 bit conversions... Thanks
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi:
Yes, your hardware is 64 bit capable.
You can install 4 x 2GB of PC2-6400 memory for best memory performance and capacity (8 GB).
You cannot do an in-place upgrade of any 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS.
You will need to back up all your files, gather any program installation disks/files you want to reinstall on the 64 bit OS, and do what is known as a custom or clean install of Windows 7.
If you live in the USA or Canada, this is the memory I recommend for your PC once you bring it to a 64 bit OS:

[SOLVED] Upgrading to nvidia 260
So now I want to upgrade to nvidia-260.xx.xx but I can't because of the I used this http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=42037 to keep it at nvidia-256, the reason why I wanted to do this can be found here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=109273 . When I do
$ sudo pacman -Syu
Password:
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
multilib is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: nvidia-256: requires kernel26<2.6.37
I tried to:
$ sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
:: nvidia-utils and nvidia-utils-256 are in conflict (libgl). Remove nvidia-utils-256? [y/N] y
:: nvidia and nvidia-256 are in conflict. Remove nvidia-256? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: ndiswrapper: requires kernel26<2.6.37
So I guessed that I could remove everything with
$ sudo pacman -Rs nvidia-256 nvidia-utils-256
Password:
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: compiz-core: requires libgl
:: lib32-nvidia-utils: requires nvidia-utils

:: qt: requires libgl
:: stone-soup: requires libgl
:: supertux: requires libgl
:: wxgtk: requires libgl
:: xine-lib: requires libgl
:: xorg-xdriinfo: requires libgl
I thought of doing sudo pacman -Rnsc nvidia nvidia-utils-256, but then I see everything that its dependent on, and don't really want to go through a whole lot to fix my system afterwards. Betting that a lot of programs are dependent on the compiz-core.
What do you guys think of maybe installing the nouveau and then install nvidia again? It would be nice if there was just a way to upgrade without having to use a lot of time with it right now...
Last edited by plitter (2011-02-08 05:04:33)Remove your old nvidia drivers with:
# sudo pacman -Rsnd nvidia-256 nvidia-utils-256
The 'd' means ignore dependencies. Obviously your machine needs the nvidia package for many things, which is why we will replace it immediately after removing the old drivers. Install the new drivers:
# sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
Once you've done that, your -Syu should work fine. Don't forget to restart X and reload the nvidia modules (or the entire machine) to apply the changes.
