[SOLVED] virtual machine or dual-boot for development

I'm about to setup a new machine and I am in need of some advice on whether to dual-boot or run a virtual box.  Arch Linux is my primary OS, but I need Windows 7 (64-bit) for certain development work.  Specifically, the tools I use are Visual Studio Express 10/11 and NI LabVIEW, and I almost always run them both at the same time.  Would this type of situation be better suited for a dual-boot setup or could I run it in VirtualBox?  I haven't done a lot of work with virtual machines, so I'm not sure of how they typically perform.  I mostly care about seamless performance and I honestly don't mind rebooting between the OSes, but if I cat get seamless performance using VirtualBox, then why not go that route.  Also, not having to setup up the dual-boot is a plus.
The hardware of this machine includes:  8 gigs of ram, AMD FX 8350, 128 GB SSD, and a 1 GB Radeon 4670 graphics card.
I know this question has been touched on in other posts, but most of the posts I've seen are more than a year or two old. Given advances in hardware, I'm interested in a current advice.

Hi,
I have a similar setup for my work. My hardware is : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3667U CPU @ 2.00GHz, 16GB of ram, 256GB SSD SED. I run a Windows 8 VM inside Virtualbox with the guest addition + extension pack and use VS 2012 Pro on daily basis.
My VM is configured to have only 1 CPU with a 100% execution cap and 4GB of ram. Thing run just perfectly like this, fluent and eye candy. Depending on my need I increase the number of CPU or tweak the execution cap.
Cheers
Edit:
Sadly modifying the VM CPU number must be done offline. However the execution cap can be tweaked online.

  • Dual boot for lion and SL

BHow do I set up the dual boot for Lion and snow leopard oon the same internal hard disK
What does Time machine do  under the dual boot?

I am also considering putting Lion and SL on separate hard drives.
Since this is an iMac forum, I assume you will use an external drive as the second drive. Use one that connects via firewire, not via USB.
Both on a single drive -
OK. Doing it on a single drive means you will need to partition the internal drive. Although this is straight forward, it is always best to back up the existing drive first, just in case. It's a good idea to have a backup on a different drive, anyway.
To do that, clone the entire internal drive to the external drive.
I would suggest, though, that you first partition the external drive. I would suggest four equal-size partitions, provided the drive is big enough - at least 1.0TB, though a 2.0TB drive might be better. You can use OS X's disk utility to do that. Go to the Partition page in Disk Utility, select your external driv in the list on the left, then use the Partition Layout menu to select the number of partitions. Set the format to Mac OS Extended (journaled) GUID for all partitions. Click the Apply button.
The easy way to do the cloning is to use a cloning utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Clone the entire internal drive to one of the partitions on the external drive. Then test boot to it (use Startup Disk in System Preferences to do that) to verify the integrity of the clone. At that time I would suggest you change the background design/picture for the desktop to aomething other than the one used on the original drive - this can be a handy visual reminder of which volume you are booted to.
Then add a partition to the internal drive. To do that, run Disk Utility. Go to the Partition page, select your internal drive in the list on the left, but do not use the Partition Layout menu this time. Instead, click the existing volume in the graphic display, then click the plus ("+") button underneath that display -
This will add a partition without erasing the existing information - i.e., the drive will end up with two partitions, one of which will contain your original boot volume.
Use Startup Disk to re-select your original boot violume, and restart back into it.
Now, clone the original drive again using CCC, but this time to the second partition of the internal drive, the one you just added.
Boot to that freshly cloned volume to verify it. Then, while still booted to it, install OS X 10.7 Lion onto it.
This will result in your original Snow Leopard on the first partition of the internal drive, and Lion on the second partition of the internal drive.
The external drive will have Snow Leopard on one partition, one partition will be empty (available for a clone of Lion if you wish, or use it for extra storage). The remaining two partitions can be used for Time Machine backups - one for Snow Leopard, one for Lion.
If you want to have each OS on its own hard drive, then you can use the first clone of Snow Leopard to the external to be upgraded to Lion, or upgrade the orignal on the internal drive to Lion. Be sure to boot to the volume to be used for Lion before installing it so that Lion is installed onto the correct boot volume.
You can then use the empty partition on the internal drive as the backup (or Time Machine) volume for the OS on the external drive, and vice versa. In this arrangement you may need only partition the external into two volumes.
If you have a different scheme in mind for partitioning, feel free to do that. I don't use Time Machine, so don't have the need to make space for it. Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to do incremental backups after the initial backup - but I don't use that, either. I'm old school - after the inital cloning for backup, I do manual backups of files on the fly.
    Comments -
    * I would suggest keeping both Snow Leopard and Lion on the internal drive. Reason - even though firewire 800 is fast, it is still noticeably slower than an internal drive. OS's on an external drive will run slower than those on an internal drive.
    • I don't like the concept of Time Machine. Amongst other things, it seems to want more space on the target volume than it actually needs; and it is not a bootable replication. A clone of a bootable volume is bootable.
    • It was just a few days ago that I went through the same process as you are planning. One slight difference - I used a 1.0TB external partitioned into 3 equal volumes, since I had no need to allow space for Time Machine. I have Snow Leopard and Lion each on its own partition of the internal drive; and cloned backups of each on the external drive, plus one GP partition on the external drive.
    • If you have not yet downloaded Lion, be prepared for it to take a while; it's almost 4GB in size. Probably be a good idea to defeat sleep for the duration.
    • Cloning takes a while, but not that long - it took 30 minutes to clone 45GB to the external drive, and 45 minutes to clone it to the second internal partition.

  • [SOLVED] Can't install; dual-boot sharing partitions?

Hi, I'm currently dual-booting Linux Mint 14 and Windows 7 on my laptop, and decided to replace Mint with Arch. Somehow, though, I don't think I ever divided my HDD into seperate partitions for Linux and Windows. Using gparted (or fdisk), /dev/sda (my HDD) has essentially got a Dell utility partition (100MiB, sda1), a recovery partition (15GiB, sda2), a 1 MiB unallocated space, and a 284 GiB section labeled "OS" (sda3). I can't touch the partition on Linux because it's always in use.
I can't get through with the installation because of this, and can't find an answer no matter how often or in-depth I RTFM. If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.
    Thanks.

I would recommend downloading the gparted cd here, and setting up your partitioning scheme from there. I am quite suprised about your system setup though, you may want to nuke it and start again because something weird is going on.
Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what's happening. I'll look into using gparted as a LiveCD, but I'd rather not wipe everything if I can help it.
I don't know if this is the case, but Ubuntu had (has?) an option to install to an image on the windows partition (wubi), rather than a partition of it's own. It's possible that Mint adapted this for their spinoff, and would explain why you only have a Windows partition.
I recommend that you modify your partition scheme if you want to install Arch. Shrink your Windows partition as much as the Windows partitioner will allow (avoid gparted and similar tools for this purpose, the Windows in-built partitioner should be adequate), then create an extended partition to house your Arch partition, swap partition, data partition, or whatever partitions you want.
Yeah, I installed Mint from a mounted image in Daemon Tools, so that could explain it. I'll look into shrinking my Windows partition and seeing if I can somehow remove Mint from my Windows partition. I still have grub and all, if that makes any difference.
there is a mint4win,  do you see something like this on boot? http://i.imgur.com/sPOMx.png
Yep! I may have installed mint4win. Let me look into that.

  • Unable to set up a dual boot for Snow Leopard and Lion

I'm running an early 2011 MacBook Pro.  I originally ran this machine with Snow leopard for quite a while.  I've got 8 GB RAM and lots of free space on my hard drive.  I upgraded to Lion and it works well.  But I want to boot to Snow Leopard from an external drive to run some old Rosetta apps.  However, I couldn't run the Snow Leopard installation disk on the Lion Machine.  When I tried to boot to the installation disk, I would get a beeping sound during startup, three beeps in a row - repeating, and it would not boot.  So I connected the external to another machine running Snow Leopard and I installed a new version of Snow Leopard on the external drive.  But my Lion machine will not boot from that external.  I am able to select the Snow Leopard drive in the Start Up Disk pane in the prefs. But when I restart, I just get the three beeps.  I must be missing something here.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not in cases when the computer successfully boots to one OS but produces three beeps when an attempt is made to boot it to another. If it really was a RAM problem that serious, the computer wouldn't get as far as checking the OS version, and it has no problems booting Lion. In the event of a minor RAM problem, it wouldn't produce three beeps like that at all.

  • Windows XP - Dual Boot for Satellite U300-134

Hi. I have read the other replies to this problem of adding Windows XP (as a dual boot) but it still won't work. My laptop (I bought a few days ago) comes with Vista, and I bought Windows XP Home Edition - OEM. I got the intel matrix storage manager onto a USB floppy drive, but now it gives a message that "The file txtsetup.oem could not be found". I have to have XP because it turns out my work VPN will not run under Vista (I found that out AFTER I bought the computer unfortunately).
Can you please tell me what I need to do next to get this working? And any other surprises I might come across? I have looked round the internet but can't find the answers to this. I tried nlite but haven't managed to get that working yet either.
    Thank you.
    Ian

    Hi
There are different reasons why you cannot install the Win XO on the U300.
First of all do you use the right Intel Matrix Storage manager?
You notebook seems to support the Intel GM965 + Intel ICH8M chipset!!!
    Please check this thread!
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=26040
User Markus77 has listed the details!
Furthermore please dont format the HDD or create any partitions AFTER installation of the Intel Matrix Storage manager. This would delete the already installed driver.

  • Virtual machine setup mini guide for thoes with XP or 7

Sorry this guide is very rough.
Why do we need this? Because application loader works only on mac. Not on PC. The final step to submit the application requires application loader. There is no way around it at the moment.
So you need to submit your app but you don't have a mac or money for a used mac. You can still submit but You will need the following
    1. Retail DVD of snow leopard (ebay has brand new copies for $45 shipped)
    2. computer with AMD or Intel CPU
    3. about 20gig HD and 2gig ram
    4. fast internet connection
    5. a big cup of coffe
    6. a gigantic bag of patience.
    also needed
Latest Empire EFI boot discs, combo update 10.5.6 for snow leopard, usb flash drive, multibeast, vmware preconfigered files for snow leopard, xcode
all available if you just google them.
    1. start download process on vmware workstation 7, combo update 10.5.6, EFI bootdisc for AMD or Intel, multibeast
    2. install vmware, reboot. open up the vmware preconfigered files, make changes to HD and ram size. save it.
    3. mount the EFI bootdisc in VMware, boot VM up, on the EFI boot screen, insert your Retail DVD and change the VM dvd drive to connect to your physical drive
    4. hit F5, it should change the icon to MAC OSX INSTALL. Install Mac. configure it if you want. after install is finished, reattach the EFI bootdisc to boot your system. you willl not be able to boot without the bootdisc.
    5. before it boots, shut it down and make a snapshot. when EFI boots up again, you will see your mac installation, select that and it will boot into mac desktop.
    6. now copy multibeast, combo update, xcode on to your usb flash drive. then connect your flash drive with mac osx, copy all the files onto your desktop
    7. open multibeast, don't install it, run combo update, then complete multibeast installation with Easybeast option
    8. now reboot your VM, if everything works, shut it down and make another snap shot
    9. install xcode! finaly! after xcode finishes installation, you are good to go.
couple of questions you might ask
    1. how to copy files around xp and mac on vmware. My suggestion, don't invest time into connecting the computers. just use the flash drive.
    2. must we always use the bootdisc to boot. No. You can find out how to resolve that. I just left it alone.
    3. why not just use xcode to develope. Well, vmware is extremlily slow running mac osx.
    4. finaly, vmware workstation 7 is trial version. Yes, you might be able to get the vmware player to run your vm after you finished the setup.

  • Virtual Machine Generation 2 Boot Issue!!! (Windows Repair Bootloop! ) Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hello people, I'm having the following with the GEN 2 in Hyper-V 2012 R2.
Issue: After bouncing my GEN2  Hyper-V VM I get this.
Then I get the Windows Repair and nothing happens after this point!
Does someone have experience this issue ?
The bad thing with it is as it's production there's no checkpoints and I cannot recover it!
    Note: this doesn't happens with GEN1 VM's.
Any help will be really appreciated

Hi, thanks for the quick response. Now the images are appearing... oh well...
    Quite familiar to me this one.  I have a couple of, or more, remedies;
1: increase the available memory to at least 4096 - just whilst installing you can alter it later.
2: make sure the enhanced session switches (both in Server and User) in the hyper-v manager are not enabled - you can re-enable them later
3: Disable "Enable Secure Boot" in the VM settings - Firmware - you can enable it after the install
4:  make sure Heartbeat is enabled in the VM's settings - Integration Services
5: Last, but not least, make sure the Smart Paging File Location is the same as the VM's location. Eg: VM: <D:\VMS\Machines> Smart Paging Location: <D:\VMS\Machines>
One or more of these has "always" worked for me in the past.  I don't offer any warranty with these "solutions", but by disabling or enabling the various options I have nearly always been able to get the VM started.
Is the ISO you are utilizing good?  One client of mine assured me he had never touched the ISO saved in that 'special place'.  A quick peer at the files inside the ISO revealed that he had been at the files and changed a minor file and then changed
it back to what he thought it had said...
    Cheers

  • Inside Virtual Machine I see 10Gbps for 40GB nic

    Hi,
I have a 40GB nic in HOST. I have created a virtual switch and assigned to the VM.
In host I see 40GB Link speed but in VM i see 10 Gbps only.  Virtual switch does not support 40Gbps or any configuration issue?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks, Krishna

    Hi Krishna,
"I have created a virtual switch and assigned to the VM."
After you did "assign" , the virtual switch still belongs to Host .
"assigned it to VM"  it means you connected the VM's virtual NIC to the Virtual Switch .

  • Dual boot machine- snow leopard and Lion

It appears I will need to set up one of my machines as dual boot, containing partitions for Snow Leopard and Lion. The reason is that Quicken is NOT compatible with Lion, and will apparently never be. Intuits "solutions" are to go to other, far less capable software, or not upgrade. Which, of course means, NEVER upgrade again.
So, I think my best solution is to set up a partition for snow leopard and one for Lion. How do I go about this? Size of partition. How to partition? Which boot disks do I use to do this?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, I just got done doing this yesterday so I can lay it out for you.
1: Copy all your user files to a regular external drive and disconnect.
2: Carbon Copy Cloner your 10.6.8 setup to another blank HFS+Journaled external drive and disconnect.
3: Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and erase your entire boot drive in Disk Utility (under the Utilities menu) format HFS+Journaled (default) of course.
4: Quit and install 10.6. Setup with the same user name as Snow. Run the 10.6.8 Combo Update. Then Software Update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
5: Use the MacAppStore to download Lion, BUT DO NOT INSTALL yet! Cancel it and click on the Installer and select "Show in Finder" follow these instructions to make boot DVD's and dmg images of Lion installer.
    http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
6: Once you do that, then Install Lion. On a pristine 10.6.8 with no third party programs or other BS it should go perfectly. Check it out that it's stable just in case or else hold command r and boot into the Recovery Partition and redownload/install again.
7: Once that's done and Software Updated, run Bootcamp and create a Windows partition larger than your 10.6.8 clone naturally. The size is up to you to decide. Cancel the Bootcamp when the partition is created.
8: Hold Option and boot off the 10.6.8 clone with all your stuff and programs, use Disk Utility to change the "BOOTCAMP" partition to "Snow Leopard" and make it a HFS+ Journaled partition from the MSDOS format (not the whole drive now or you'll lose Lion and the Recovery Partition) If this doesn't work then use Disk Utility c booted from the 10.7 DVD or command r from the Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility there.
9: Once that's done, Option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and Carbon Copy Clone 10.6.8 onto the Snow Leopard partition.
Walla, a dual boot system with all your stuff intact. Just hold option upon boot and/or use the Startup Disk in System Preferences to set a default.
I'm currently working on a quad boot system now. It's got Lion, Snow, Linux and will have Windows too. A lot more complicated than simply Snow and Lion.
Note: OS X Lion reguires a internet connection to install, even from a boot DVD.
    Enjoy.

  • Pre-built Virtual Machine for SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g - console logons

    Dear All
Excellent work on VirtualBox SOA suite image, very very cool
All started up no sweat, logged into virtual image no probs (oracle:oracle)
Firefox all nicely set up with links
BUT what are the console logins for
    1 - Oracle EM
    2 - WLS Console
    3 - BPM Workspace
    4 - BPM Process Composer
    5 - Oracle B2B Login
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I cant find them
    many thanks all

I will try to explain in more detail what i am trying here:
I am planning to use the Virtual Machine as server, just for running Weblogic with SOA/BPM.
All the development i will do on a different computer, where I have installed JDeveloper. From the development environment I will try to deploy applications on SOA/BPM Virtual machine.
As I understood, bridge networking are problematic when using wireless connectivity and VirtualBox. Therefore, I am trying to use NAT with port forwarding instead.
    To make port forwarding work:
First, you need to execute on the host the following command line:
    +VBoxManage modifyvm "vbox-oel5u4-soabpm-11gr1ps2-bp1-otn" --natpf1 "guestswls,tcp,,7001,,7001"+
Next, on guest VM, Network Adapters, choose NAT and as Adapter Type choose: Intel PRO/1000 MT Server
With this settings, I am able to connect from development computer to the Em console, WLS console etc. I am able even to 'see' the WLS SOA/BPM instance with JDeveloper from LAN machine. But when I am trying to deploy from JDeveloper, under SOA Servers step2 screen, I see the server URL as localhost:7001. Therefore I cannot deploy yet...
    Thanks,
    Florin

  • Deleting dual boot OS

i only found one post that was somewhat applicable to my issue of removing a dual boot (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation/Thinkstation-E20-Dual-boot-from-Windows-7-into-XP/m-p/21871... and that led me on a merry chase. if this is useful to anyone else, great - if posting a solution as an FYI is inappropriate and i should wait to reply to someone with the same issue, pls let me know
the situation: my former IT guys installed W7 Pro x64 (thx, Lenovo, for the free upgrade from Vist Business ) on a new partition alongside XP Pro x32 and it worked great, but i only kept using XP for my !@#$%^ genius scanner, which i have never gotten to run under XP Mode/Virtual PC in W7.
one day, after several months of XP inactivity, i decided to boot into it for some reason and had a BSOD. so then i set out to just eradicate the offending OS and its partition...simple, right? not in this case. i found the guys had put the W7 OS onto a logical drive not a primary:
    Local Disk (C
    156.71 GB NTFS
Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Logical Drive)
my boot.ini was on the XP partition and W7 uses bootmgr so i poked around and found that EasyBCD should take care of the issue by copying the boot.ini info to bootmgr on C:\ through this link in the SevenForums:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/209885-bootmgr-move-c-easybcd.html
again, not so easy. i could not move the bootmgr because of the logical status of the partition and also because the partition wasn't set to active; i converted the partition to active with no troubles under the native Disk Managment but failed when i tried to convert the partition to primary.i feared having to do a wipe and reinstall to tidy up as i saw some (forums unnamed) folks advocating.
i looked into it a bit further and found that i needed to use use a partition tool from bootable media (i used a CD with EaseUS Partition Master - the freeware version ) to convert to primary at boot and then i used the above link to copy the bootmgr to C:\ with EasyBCD
now my OS drive looks like so (the partition is large owing to the GIS files that like living there):
    Local Disk (C
    226.71 GB NTFS
Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
that solved the problem of the W7 OS being on an inactive, logical drive instead of an active primary - and in future if i set up a dual boot for any other OS, i'll make sure the disk is set as primary before i install and the backwater IT guys here will never touch my machine again

  • Dual Boot Ubuntu Macbook Pro 8,1

I have learned through trial and error (mostly error) that the newest Macbook Pro (early 2011 8,1) has a problem with ubuntu liveCDs and will not boot from them. I want to get Ubuntu running primarily so I can root my android phone. As of now I have Ubuntu 11.10 running on a virtual machine with VirtualBox but virtual machines don't work for rooting purposes. Is there still a way to dual boot a Macbook Pro 8,1 with Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Live CD's are designed for generic PC machines, not Mac's with a GUID Partition Table and EFI.
Booting and installing Ubuntu on a Mac can brick the machine, as the header on the GPT has a partial MBR like Windows full MBR, so it's mistaken for one and attmepts to install.
Also Linux requires two partitions, one a swap partition which it mistakes the hidden EFI partiton for that.
Getting a Lion based Mac to dual boot Linux is much harder than Snow Leopard, as there is a new hidden Lion Recovery Partiiton to deal with, also on the newer 2011 Mac's with recent firmware updates has caused all sorts of headaches for the required rEFIt needed (hasn't been updated) and creating two more partitions that Linux requires.
If you had a pre 2011 Mac and no Lion, just Snow Leopard, I would say no problem.
A much better option for you is to get a inexpensive machine and install Linux on it, or buy one already installed, until this Lion buisness settles down and urber geeks tweek Linux on Mac's again, but right now it's appearing Apple has charted a course for a closed operating system like a iPhone/iPad and that doesn't generate a whole lot of interest in running Linux on Mac's.
