The same problem here. I compiled virtualbox-source 4.1.18-4 with "dkms install" under linux-ck-3.4.6-2 but had "ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Exec format error" whilie trying to modprobe.
Solved:According to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=145925, I should delete "old" vboxdrv generated by vboxbuild.
Yeah! Removing the modules from /usr/lib/extramodules... and doing a depmod worked fine!

  • Missing /usr/bin/reboot

i use GNOME and arch is up to date as it can be after doing a "pacman -Syu".
when i use GNOME's shutdown-dialog to reboot the system, GNOME and X stop as they should, but then the system gives a message, "Command failed /usr/bin/reboot" and a short description that it wasn't found.
the system then takes a short breath of about 5-10 seconds and reboots as it should.
well, there is no /usr/bin/reboot on my harddisk, just /sbin/reboot...why?
had the same thing some days ago on another system. was /usr/bin/reboot removed during one of the last updates and GNOME still tries to use it instead of /sbin/reboot?
    Thanks!
    Cheers!

I had this problem as well and couldn't work out what I had done wrong - I hadn't been fiddling with any settings, honest.  Anyway, it first occurred last Saturday when I shutdown my PC after these updates:

and not only was there an error about the missing file but gdm-binary segfaulted.  Here's the entry from everything.log:
    Feb 2 09:53:50 gconfd (david-9810): Exiting
Feb 2 09:53:50 darkstar gdm-binary[9706]: WARNING: Command failed /usr/bin/poweroff: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/poweroff" (No such file or directory)

Thing is, looking back through older log entries, the warning about failing to execute /usr/bin/reboot or /usr/bin /poweroff is always there on reboot/shutdown but I had never before seen it echoed to the screen.  Anyway, I wasn't sure where to report the bug but made my own fix in the meantime by adding the following to the daemon section of /etc/gdm/defaults.conf
    RebootCommand=/sbin/reboot
    HaltCommand=/sbin/poweroff
The other consequence of those Saturday updates, which hasn't gone away yet, is that the normal shutdown messages - stopping this, stopping that etc. - don't always appear.  It's not consistent but more often than not gnome will drop to a console with a login prompt and my PC will shutdown a few seconds later  If I don't start gnome and just run /sbin/poweroff from the console then the usual messages will appear.  As far as I can tell, however, my PC is shutting down properly despite the lack of messages.
EDIT: And /sbin is in my path.
EDIT 1: And the segfaults continue (I thought that they'd gone away):
    Feb 6 23:27:08 gconfd (david-9811): Exiting

  • [SOLVED] Freezing while executing /usr/bin/openbox from Openbox menu

I'm following the instructions in this webpage to create a dynamic menu. I have successfully achieved this on my laptop by installing the openbox-menu package and typing the following lines in menu.xml:
    <menu id="desktop-app-menu" label="Applications" execute="/usr/bin/openbox-menu lxde-applications.menu" />
For some reason, the same doesn't work on my desktop PC. After editing and saving the menu.xml file, I restart Openbox and when I right click the desktop and hover the "Applications" menu item the desktop freezes. However, I can still move the mouse and switch to other ttys with Ctrl+Alt+Fx, therefore I believe it's reasonable to suggest that the problem lies in the permissions.
What should I do about it?
Last edited by Martificiam (2013-02-03 11:29:21)

Umm, that's not "some random" webpage at all... It worked on all of my Arch Linux installations. The "lxde-applications.menu" is just an argument. But thanks for the link, I'll look into it.
It's just that it's more of a workaround, not a solution, really... since it has ALWAYS worked for me.
Furthermore, while setting up Arch on my laptop I remember experiencing similar problems (running a particular program from the openbox menu and resulting in a desktop freeze). This must have something to do with permissions.
Edit: the xdg_menu worked perfectly, but I would still prefer to use the openbox-menu. I'm marking this as solved anyway.

  • Missing /usr/bin/make

    (Oracle Standarad edition 8.1.5, RH6.1)
When I ran the 8i patches I get a bunch of error messages in the log files saying that the command gmake is missing. This in turn creates other errors and causes the relinking to not work correctly. I have read the 8i patch FAQ, but unfortunately I don't have /usr/bin/make either. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Then you have to install make from your RedHat CD, then if needed, do the symbolic link.

  • [SOLVED] .. error: coreutils: /usr/bin/install exists in filesystem

    Hi All,

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    coreutils: /usr/bin/install exists in filesystem

    Anyone help here?
Last edited by bmentink (2012-04-05 02:26:42)

I just ran into this same issue today while performing a full system upgrade. After some investigation, I came to agree with the OP that manually removing "/usr/bin/install" is the correct action to take.
Prior to successfully executing the full system upgrade, I found that /usr/bin/install was a symlink to /bin/install. Using "pacman -Qo /bin/install", I found that the file /bin/install was owned by the coreutils 8.15-1 package. The symlink /usr/bin/install, however, was not owned by any package. The conflict arises because coreutils 8.16-2 wants to put the new install program in /usr/bin instead of its previous location under /bin.
My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to recall running into a problem installing some third party library that had /usr/bin/install hard-coded into its build script and claimed the file didn't exist. I may have manually created the symlink /usr/bin/install to /bin/install as a quick-fix, then forgot to remove it. In retrospect, I could have confirmed/refuted this hypothesis by comparing the time stamp on the symlink /usr/bin/install to /bin/install. If the symlink was created well after /bin/install, then I'm probably to blaim; on the other hand, if the symlink was created essentially at the time /bin/install was created, then most likely the creators of the coreutils package forgot to claim ownership of the symlink.

  • [SOLVED] Binaries move to /usr/bin - Few Questions

    Hi All-
I just learned about this recent change to the filesystem. Wondering if this page outlines the correct steps for moving binaries to /usr/bin:
    https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
When I ran the second command (paclist...) on that page, I got a syntax error:
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `|'
Other than that, none of the commands listed on the page give me any results, so I'm assuming that means there are no conflicts and it's safe to run the final three commands to upgrade the system. Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi- Hmmm, I think this requires an explanation... I see that /bin /sbin/ and /usr/sbin directories are symbolic links, but what I meant is that if you cd into /bin for example, and do "file filename" on any file in there, it'll show that it's "dynamically linked"... I mistook this for meaning a symbolic link.
    Example:
    └──╼ file mev

  • Virtualbox modules compilation from virtualbox-source no longer works

Since virtualbox-source dropped /usr/bin/vboxbuild and started depending on dkms, I can no longer compile VirtualBox modules for my kernel.

    But then:
    thar@myhost ~> sudo modprobe vboxdrv
ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Exec format error
I have seen similar topic on Chakra support forums. The advice was not to use dkms. Because in Arch virtualbox-source package has a dependency on it, it is not applicable (and anyways, virtualbox-source doesn't have vboxbuild anymore).

None of the previous mentioned methods worked for me:
I'm still using the stock kernel  3.3.4 because of the high load problems since 3.3.5.
    $ uname -a

    BUT:
/usr/lib/modules/3.3.4-2-ARCH/build exists and contains a symlink to the correct headers under /usr/src/linux-3.3.4-2-ARCH:
    ls -l /lib/modules/3.3.4-2-ARCH/build
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Mai 2 18:39 /lib/modules/3.3.4-2-ARCH/build -> ../../../usr/src/linux-3.3.4-2-ARCH
What can I still do to get virtualbox working?

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox complaining after each kernel upgrade

I'm using virtualbox-bin from the AUR (the one with USB support) and after each kernel update this error comes up:
    I know it's actually /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
(apparently VirtualBox isn't aware of which distribution it's running on)
This message comes up every once in a while (usually after a kernel upgrade) and I was wondering if I can do something about it... Should I install the DKMS package from the AUR prior to running the above command? Maybe that will shut it up once and for all.
    What do you think?
PS: The wiki says to run "vboxbuild" but /usr/bin/vboxbuild doesn't even exist.
Last edited by DSpider (2012-05-15 15:39:13)

Solved it a year later because I got tired of running "sudo /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup && sudo modprobe vboxdrv" after every kernel update. Hmph... After reading this and studying the virtualbox-hook package from the AUR, I decided that it's finally time to look into it.
    It's easy.
    1. Create a "/lib/initcpio/install/vbox" file (or whatever you wanna call it) with the following contents:
    # vim: set ft=sh:
    build ()
    echo "Building VirtualBox modules..."
    /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
    echo "Ok."
    help ()
    cat<<HELPEOF
This hook rebuilds VirtualBox modules. It does nothing to the initrd image.
    HELPEOF
    2. Add it to the "HOOKS" section from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput filesystems vbox"
Now the next time the linux and linux-headers packages are updated, the script will kick in and the modules will be rebuilt. I used to have it during boot process and it took forever until it would load X. Haha. I remember I used to go to bathroom just after I turned on the computer... Yeah, it took that long before it was done. Anyway, I asked the author if he can perhaps create a virtualbox-bin-hook package or somehow modify it to also work with virtualbox-bin. We shall see.
Oh, and don't forget to add "vboxdrv" to the "MODULES" section from /etc/rc.conf, if you haven't done so already.

  • $PATH missing '/usr/local/bin'

    $PATH missing '/usr/local/bin' in /etc/login.defs and /etc/profile.
I only noticed, being somewhat a noob, after compiling the NEW Dillo 0.7.3 and finding that it places its' executable in /usr/local/bin (!).  This, not being in my $PATH by default.
Please consider adding this line to future ARCH 0.6 or beyond for WORKSTATION users:
    # /etc/profile
    export PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/bin"
    Thanx.

A very wise decision to use this great browser :-) ... and I'm even serious about that.
Mt.Tam-Luxer wrote:and finding that it places its' executable in /usr/local/bin (!).  This, not being in my $PATH by default.
For some reason it is in my /etc/profile ... but I don't remember if I put it there or not.
Firstly, (and as already mentioned more or less) I can see arguments why AL does not include /usr/local/bin by default (mainly because there is nothing there when only installing AL packages).
But OTOH, this is the beauty of AL : you can (and are even supposed to) configure your system as you like by editing the files in /etc. I guess that's why I don't remember, because the first thing I would do if need be is editing /etc/profile ;-) ...
Oh, but something (very general !) to consider : if you want to keep your system "Unix-style", don't put every posible PATH in /etc/profile, but put it in ~/.profile (or whatever shell you are using). If you are the only user, it does not really matter. But in a "true multi-user Unix system" you should not have /funky/path/bin in /etc/ ... not that /usr/local is exotic ....this is more of a general note.
sarah31 wrote:but imho if there is a PKGBUILD for a desired app (such as dillo)
yes, the PKGBUILD for dillo works fine, however, last week they released the latest version 0.7.3 which Mt.Tam-Luxer tried to install ( ... hint ... hint ... package maintainers ... :-) ... ). It was not quite clear from your post if yo wanted him to modify the PKGBUILD script or to just use it.
Oh, and besides changing pkgver, the source should now point to http://www.dillo.org/download/dillo-0.7.3.tar.bz2

    Seems like wget isn't installed.
Thank you. That was the problem.

  • /usr/bin/install is missing!

Well, I don't know how this one happened.  I was trying to "make install" a program I had just finished compiling, and then I get a message saying that /usr/bin/install is missing.  I checked /usr/bin for "install", and it isn't there, even though it was before.  How do I fix this problem?

Problem solved.  I made a link to /bin/install under /usr/bin, and it worked fine.
Now then, another question: why did Nodoka get installed under /usr/local/lib, rather than /usr/lib?
EDIT: Should have waited a moment before posting, I guess.  How do you install packages from AUR?  Or packages that you downloaded onto your system?

Thanx Chok. I know that. That's why I'm posting this. This app was make for debian so it's something to do with:
    install:    jconv fconv mkwavex
        /usr/bin/install -m 755 jconv $(PREFIX)/bin
        /usr/bin/install -m 755 fconv $(PREFIX)/bin
        /usr/bin/install -m 755 mkwavex $(PREFIX)/bin
    solved...I removed [/usr/bin/install -m 755] and replaced with [install]
    so it looked like this:
    install $(PREFIX)/bin
