[solved] Wrong display of fonts (all square boxes now)

Hi!
I tried Infinality  (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … Infinality) for font-hinting a few days / weeks ago. Everything worked fine until I recently did - like every day - a
pacman -Syu
since that update my Fonts are all Squares now. Only the real standard fonts (e.g. Bitstream Vera Sans) are displayed correctly now.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us also tried already a
# pacman -S --asdeps freetype2 libxft cairo fontconfig
and I refreshed my font cache via
$ fc-cache -vf
I even followed the described command
pango-querymodules > '/etc/pango/pango.modules'
in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51316.
But none of the above mentioned worked. Would someone please be so kind and help me out?
UPDATE: Meanwhile I tried a
# pacman -Rscn gnome
and reinstalled gnome & gnome-extra. But this doesn't work either, fonts like 'Verdana' aren't displayed correctly.
UPDATE 2: After deleting my manual installed Windows 7 fonts and reloading the cache everything works fine now. I don't know why, but it works

hacosta wrote:I highly doubt reinstalling gnome would actually do anything, since blackbox is not affected, have you tried just choosing another font in gnome's font thing
I fixed this by uninstalling gnome, all config files for pkg's removed, their dependencies, and all packages that depend on those - with the following command
pacman -Rscn gnome
This removed A LOT of packages.  Then I had to reinstall gnome and my fonts were once again readable.
Before anyone tells me how stupid I was for doing that, or how there may have been a simpler theoritical solution - realize that I use my computer for work daily.  I had made a few posts and wasn't getting the help I needed so I had to figure something out.  I tried removing gnome and all it's packages without the '-n' option (config files), but that didn't work.  So I reloaded gnome, then retried with the '-n' option and that did work.
I googled this and apparently many other people had this problem with gnome (not Arch-specific), but nobody gave any workable solutions to any of them either.  Hopefully someone smarter than me can comment on the true cause of this, and maybe deduce a better solution - as I am sure some other poor sap will run into the same problem and surely come across this thread.
I appreciate everyone's input on this, and hopefully someone will chime in here with a much simpler solution that wont cause as much trouble as it did for me.
cheers.

  • What is wrong with my font? Squares instead of letters - Help!

Can someone tell me what is wrong with my system font? Everytime I need to put my administrator key the login page will appear but with weird glitched font of squared A's all around (see picture).  I can't recall that I have done any installations that would mess with it.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Bart

You have a bad System Font.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Once Disk Reports OK, reinstall the OS.

  • [Solved] Steam Displaying Oddly on All Workspaces (Openbox)

Recently I've had Steam behave oddly on all non-steam workspaces. I have it on workspace one, but it is showing through other applications. If I scroll over to the browser workspace, steam will display the main steam window through firefox window, or through various other applications (such as a file browser). It does this almost 100% of the time, and it only started happening recently, but I don't recall any large changes. It does not do this on any other WM/DE that I have tried either (Gnome, Fluxbox, Cinnamon, etc). It seems it may be an issue with Openbox exclusively.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Or even pointing into the direction of the issue so I can do my own research. But I'm at a loss currently as to what I can look for.

Awesome, thanks! I just enabled compton, and immediately it looks like things are working as normal again. This is such an odd issue. I hope nvidia fixes this soon. I'm really glad that I did not roll back anything, however. That would have been a tedious process. Thanks for the advice!

    Hi Don
I and Jay are facing this issue together. We had already installed the Arial Unicode font and are using those fonts in CR. Its working in the UAT server but in the live server its' not working.
I double check that  the font is already installed in the live server. Only difference I can spot is in Live server the actual Windows directory is called SIOUXSIE althought there is still a Windows directory. I have installed the Unicode font in both directories but still having this problem.
    Hope you can help !!

  • Grid does not display special characters (as square boxes)

    SQLD 1.5.1 (54.40):
We found out, special characters like newline will not shown in data grid in any way. But we need to know, if there are such characters. If there any way to get these characters visible?

    create table mytab (mycol varchar2(20));
    insert into mytab(mycol) values('Test'||char(13));
    commit;

You will not see the appended newline character within the grid, while toad is doing .

You're right that whitespace doesn't show as squares anymore (I think they did in the past), but everything else seems OK.

  • Non-english character display as square box

    Hi all,
I'm not very sure if this question should be asked here or in the JRE board, thus I'm trying here also
I have been trying an opensourced application called Alliancep2p (could be obtained from www.alliancep2p.com) using JRE 1.6 on an English Windows XP Pro machine.
    The problem:
all chinese input are displayed as "square box". It looks like the programme "gets" the correct character, only that everything is displayed as "square box".
It looks like a font issue, though I'm not that sure. Is there anyway the default fonts could be changed, or to get the characters correctly displayed?
Note: I have east asian fonts installed, and the Java config panel can display chinese or other non-english characters correctly.
I tried the same application under GNU/Linux (locale is UTF-8) and chinese input/display correctly without any problem at all. Does it mean that it is not the problem of the application, or?
The original question in the JRE board:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5265369&tstart=0
    Thanks for all the input.

I'm not really sure if it's a problem of the application or not. But the fact that it works perfectly under Linux makes me think maybe it's not the problem of the program, and actually their developers said that unicode is being used all over the program and seems like they're not CJK users also.
I'm not a java guru so I can't really tell from the source if there's anything wrong.

    Hi,
I am using Windows XP Simplified Chinese Version SP3, Sun JDK5.0 Update 20. I want to run Apache Ofbiz POS; however, the Chinese characters (zh) in PosUiLabels.xml are all displayed as square boxes.
I have tested run Ofbiz in Mac OS X and the Simplified Chinese are displayed normally, and other languages can also be displayed in Windows XP.
    What should I do?

When you say "displayed" I assume you mean displayed in some GUI component. In which case you should assign a font to that component which can render those characters properly.

  • Menu fonts all turn into boxed capital "A"s

At some point last night, while I was working on my 10.4.9 PowerMac G4, something happened and my menu fonts all turned into some glyph that looks like a capital "A" inside of a box. All of the text on the desktop, menu bar, window titles, and the left side of a finder window have this change. Files displayed within a finder window, however, do not.
Does anyone have any idea of what might have gone broken to cause this, and ideas on what I can do to try to fix it? I'd rather not reinstall if that's an option.
I've run Disk Utility and DiskWarrior to make sure the drive is up to spec, and it checked out.
    PowerMac G4 Dual 1Ghz (MDD)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Would it be possible to replace that font from
    another 10.4.9 system?
Sure, from any OS X system at all. But I imagine you
still have Lucida Grande (look in
System/Library/Fonts) and I doubt replacing it will
help. Worth a try, but I think the problem is
something messed up in the OS that makes it think the
    font is gone.
That, also, appears to be the case. Sigh. Looks like it's reinstall time.
    Thanks for the tips, though!

  • Embedded fonts are missing characters in display despite having all glyphs...

    Hi,
As per the subject, I have a vast array of different fonts that I need to load on demand via CSS to SWF.
For the most part, this works very well. I have around 600 fonts where everything is just fine.
    I also have some problem fonts like the below;
    That is _supposed_ to display;
    "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
All the glyphs are there, and have been validated using font.hasGlyphs(string) method.
The font works perfectly in numerous desktop applications
The font works perfectly when converted to a web font
Nonetheless, no matter what I try, or what SDK I use, the problem fonts always fail to display on the same characters.
My guess is, because they are allowing spaces for the characters, that the glyphs and / or metrics are slightly out, but I have absolutely no idea where to begin debugging this and I would welcome any input from anybody who _has_ got an idea!
    Thanks,
    G

Well, hasGlyphs just says there is data in the slot for that character, not whether the data is any good.
Essentially,  all embedded fonts are transcoded into a Flash-compatible data format.  Then Flash uses that data format to draw the glyph.  There are 4 data formats that Flash uses, but they fall into two main categories: CFF, and non-CFF.  The transcoding is done via the compiler with help from some font manager libraries listed in the flex-config.xml.  Depending on whether you need CFF or non-CFF, I think different libraries are used.  I've heard you may get slightly different results by messing around with the list of font managers, but I haven't proven it.
Anyway, first thing I would try is a simple, AS-only test with whatever configuration is failing (CFF or non-CFF).  Then I would try the opposite configuration.  Getting Flex and TLF out of the equation helps narrow down the possibilities.  But it is probably some issue with the transcoding.  Are there other commonalities with the non-working fonts?  Are they all OTF or CFF fonts?

  • Small square boxes appearing on blank lines (UPDATED) - The question is, how to get rid of them?

*******  As to my display name "All I tried were in use" - when I registered at the Adobe site to use the Browser Lab, I tried something like 10 or 12 user names and finally gave up and went with "All I tried were in use" - my name is Bob
    ------------------------------- UPDATE --------------------
The problem, small square boxes showing on lines in Freetext Tool comments, is not limited to blank lines, as I originally reported here. These boxes are showing up at the end of every line. It does not matter if the line break is hard or soft, whether the line is empty or not.
Please read the original post bearing mind that the  problem is occurring at the end of all lines.
Also - here is a screen capture of a part of one comment box, showing the square lines. I didn't show the entire box because the material above the area I'm showing is a tad private or confidential. Here is the image showing the boxes - note that there is no box at the end of the last line in the comment.
    -------- Original Post ------------
We have a copy of Acrobat 5.0. and up until now it has done what we need, which is not much more than adding bookmarks, links, and some touch up. I know it is very old and I know things change. I'm hoping this has nothing to do with the release we are using. I would think this would be a backward compatibility issue if it is a problem with newer Reader versions dealing with PDFs "edited" with 5.0.
I am having small square boxes showing up on blank lines. (read my update above  - the boxes are at the end of all lines, soft break or hard break))
I'm a programmer (37+ years in most all aspects of Data Processing) and I decided to learn the PHP programming "language" to add some server side processing to some of my web sites. So, I found a fairly good manual on PHP in PDF form and have been using it.
I quickly found that the PDF didn't have a single link in it and no bookmarks, so I've been adding them as I look up a particular subject. I'm also adding comments and notes to document things not in the original manual or to add comments that would help other programmers` (who know  other languages) to adjust to PHPs' way of thinking - for example: in all the other languages I know (perhaps two dozen) to get rid of a file, you "delete" it. In PHP you "unlink" it.
I've added a lot of comments and notes like that and when I view the PDF in Reader (on this computer I have 9.4.2) I'm seeing small square boxes on empty lines. The lines were created when I pressed Enter twice to insert a blank line between paragraphs. (again, read the update at the top of this message - the boxes are at the end of all lines, soft break or hard break)
How can I get rid of them?
They are not present when I've got the PDF open with Acrobat, only when I'm using an Acrobat Reader.
They are also not present if I look at the comments using the Comments navigation panel - that is, they still show on the page, but they don't show in the copy of the comment displayed in the navigation panel.
They are not present in Notes or when I use one of the shape tools (Square Tool, Circle Tool, or Line Tool) to create notes. They are only present in Freetext Tool comments
They are clearly being show where there are successive line feed/carriage return characters - but how do I get rid of them?
I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING - I realized that I'd not printed any of the pages on which I have placed comments and wondered if the boxes show when printing the PDF with Reader -- they do. They are not present if I use Acrobat, not a Reader, to print the same page.
Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Please don't tell me to get a newer version - an expenditure like that is simply and totally out of the picture. For us, this is a Depression, not a Recession - we are self-employed and our businesses have been severely hammered since 2006 - we are down to about 1/4 of our income before the big guys trashed the economy.

P.S. Do you know that you can have a heart attack without chest pain, shortness of breath, or left arm  pain? Well, you can! I've had two and the first one nearly killed me because I had no clue it was a heart attack. You can read about it first one here.  Pass this on, it could save a life.
My second heart attack occurred on October 4, 20112 - it began, around 3:15 AM, as the first one did, with a headache. It turned out the stent implanted in 2002 had been completely clogged by too much tissue grown. The doctor put another stent inside the first one.

Problem Resolved - it is a font issue. Apparently Acrobat can't handle particular fonts and it is best to stick with a very small slection of fonts - Arial, Helvetica, Times Roman.
I haven't test a lot of fonts. If I do, I'll post there results here.

yeah, I don't think that key gets formatted correctly. I don't know if changing encoding will help... My one thought is that maybe you can do something creative like write a wrapper for Graphics that prints that character correctly.
