[SOLVED] xmonad on virtualbox guest does not work

I'm trying to install xmonad on an arch guest in virtualbox.
I'm referencing both the Beginner's Guide and the VirtualBox doc. The beginner's guide says to install X a different way and points the virtualbox guide, which doesn't mention X.
So here's what I do:
$ pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils virtualbox-archlinux-additions mesa
$ modprobe -a vboxguest vboxsf vboxvideo
Looking online, I get the impression that virtualbox-archlinux-additions includes a video driver, so I don't install one (not sure which driver would work anyways).
After installing "xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm dbus" startx works. However, when I exit, the output says something about pixman: 0.24.0 and complains
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) AIGLX error: vboxvideo does not export required DRI extension
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(EE) VirtualBox USB Tablet: failed to initialize for relative axes
xinit: connection to X server lost
There is no default ~/.xinitrc (it does not exist)
I then install xmonad and xmonad-contrib. There is no default ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs
I then do
$ cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc .
Then I append "xmonad" (I also tried exec xmonad) and run "startx" and I get a black screen that hangs. I can't quit the environment, so I'm forced to close the virtual machine. Adding ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs doesn't help either.
Can someone tell me what's going on? Am I missing a video driver?

Hmm, so I now get:
$ xmonad
xmonad-i386-linux: user error (openDisplay)
with
$ cat ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs
import XMonad
main = xmonad $ defaultConfig

Using the last model of airport time capsule, i faced an issue with the guest wifi. I see the guest wifi on the available wifi list, then i digit the password (system accept it) but i cannot abtain any connection. I tried several time by making several set up (also without protection) but the connection does not work. The TC must be in router mode.. if it is in bridge even though it looks like guest network is available and even though Apple says it now works.. it doesn't.

Virtualbox: Compositing does not work, compiz crashes

So, here's my problem:
After installing a fresh Arch Linux, the first thing I did was install Xorg and Virtualbox guest modules. After doing all that, and running Xfce, it worked just fine... except there was no compositing.
When I installed Compiz and tried to run it, it just crashed, closing every program and just leaving me with the wallpaper, forcing me to killall X
Is there a way to fix this? I don't have a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11, and xorg :0 -configure gives me the error "No output drivers"

[SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

Okay. I played a lot Warcraft III The Frozen Throne with Wine in Ubuntu. When I started to use Arch, of course I wanted to continue playing.
But, when I started the game for the first time it gets into main screen (with 800x600 resolution, it is default when you start the game for the first time, my xorg.conf supports it) but freezes after about 2 secs. And I have to kill X. But now it even does not start (it changes resolution from 1920x1200 to 800x600, but does not continue)! I'm using KDE4.1 - is this somehow related to nVidia driver bug (I'm using nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra)?
Arch 64bit KDE4.1
Wine 1.1.3 (installed with this, but also tested this - same problem)
WC3 patched 1.22 - installed MS Visual C 2005 Runtimes in order to get it work (see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=3126 )
I'm running the game from NTFS partition.
Edit: Tested with emulated desktop. Problem remains.
Edit2: Solved problem with 32bit Arch. Works like a charm!

For some reason WarCraft III doesn't like those (Hardware acceleration in particular...) Set Hardware acceleration to Basic or Full and the game will launch...
It's set to "Full". And as I said, game launches but freezes after a few secs. But music continues even if a screen is frozen.

However, now qemu-kvm has been removed. If I replace "qemu-kvm" with "qemu-system-x86_64" and try to run it with an extra argument "-machine accel=kvm" or "-enable-kvm", what I get is

Interestingly, mine worked without being in the new group. However, I think that's because I hadn't logged out since the update, so the session didn't know that I had been removed from the group. Though I could be missing something.

I would like to set the window size of my vim to 95 when working with markdown files, so put
set columns=95
into an autosourced file when opening Markdown files. Unfortunately this has no effect and when I look at
set columns?
the window size is still 179 characters long.
When I try to do
set columns=95
with vim already open, vim very shortly resizes the text/window, but after a second return to the original size which is 179 character (screen width)
I tried ot figure out if it is a problem of my .vimrc by temporaliy working with a new empty .vimrc but the problem remains the same. I tried it out in another terminal emulator, but the problem remains the same. I tried it out logged in as root user before starting the XServer and here it worked as expected. So my gues is it has to do or with a X setting or with my window manager or with my shell.
I am using i3, urxvt and zsh in the context where it didn't work and the Arch install default setting in the context where it works. Still I have no clue what causes the problem.

Thanks, I haven't thought of that possibility and it works. Although what I wanted to achieve is not possible with this solution though I found the Vimroom plugin which did the job, so thanks again.

[SOLVED] Mounting /tmp as tmpfs does not work?

running arch since a few days now, and began a bit of tweaking.
I read, mounting the /tmp dir as a tmpfs adding the following line to my /etc/fstab should slightly increase performance. (plus removing the old /tmp mount rule)
none /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noatime,size=1000M,mode=1777 0 0
I have conky running showing my ram usage. Shouldn't the numbers increase if I copy something to the /tmp directory? I copied a large file to the dir. but nothing happened to the ram usage.

Sorry to say it, but I think you can see from Bob's response that there's no way to solve this rapidly.
Did you take an image of your Mountain Lion install before upgrading to Yosemite? Roll back to that. If you're not in the habit of taking a snapshot of your system before performing operating system upgrades - get in that habit. If you are dependent on anything at all on hour computer, having a reliable backup method in place is essential. If you don't have a Time Capsule, or some other way to run Time Machine onto a disk that's not in your computer, go set that up yesterday.
If you can't just remove Yosemite and roll back to Mountain Lion for whatever reason, you can partition your drive so that you can install both Yosemite and Mountain Lion on the same drive, and then boot into Mountain Lion when you need to work in CS5. Or you can take your Mountain Lion disc (I assume you have one, no?) and then use it to create a virtual machine in something like VirtualBox to run Mountain Lion from inside Yosemite.

Solved rEFInd does not work after update

Hello.
Today, I updated rEFInd with yaourt.
After the update, I copied the new files in /boot/efi.
I rebooted and now rEFInd does not work.
The only message I got is:
rEFInd - Initializing
After 2-3 minutes, the computer reboots and I got the same error message.
To boot, I had to use the UEFI shell.
First of all, is there a log file for rEFInd?
It is not easy at all to debug it when we don't have any error messages.
After that, I did the procedure to install rEFInd in /boot/efi twice without any success.
Do you know what to do to solve my problem?

@antoyo: The old one is compiled using gnu-efi-libs, the new one is compiled using Tianocore UDK2010.

The Game Center app is pre installed and cannot be removed from the device.
Best thing to do is move it to the last available screen.
Hold down the Game Center app until all the apps jiggle then sliide the Game Center app to the right from one screen to the next. This requires a bit of finesse, but it's doable.
Press the Home button one time to stop the apps from jiggling.
For the Apple ID issue, try resetting.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then try your Apple ID and password for the Game Center app.

Reinstall Safari 5.1.10 for OS X 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569. Might do the trick.
But, frankly, I don't think that simply reinstalling the old Safari will work because of all the peripheral, under the hood changes that happen when you upgrade from one version of Safari to another. Reinstalling 5.1.10 may be insufficient to turn back the clock. (This is the moment where a Time Machine or another form of full backup would save your bacon.)
While you're getting a copy of Safari 5.1.10, get a copy of Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/desktop/), too, so that you have an alternate browser to use as you're sorting matters.
