[SOLVED] Xorg started with -logfile /dev/null by gdm
Hi, I just installed arch and I noticed X server was not logging to Xorg.0.log at all. Then I did a ps -ef | grep X and have the following.
root 309 288 1 13:11 tty1 00:01:54 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -background none -noreset -verbose 3 -logfile /dev/null -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-nEsqh5/database -seat seat0 -nolisten tcp vt1
I followed the beginner's guide and is using gnome 3. I wonder why default gdm install would start Xorg without logging and where can I configure it?
P.S. when I disable gdm and manually run startx, Xorg started to log to Xorg.0.log.

Thanks for your reply! I search about this and was able to view the log via journalctl -e /usr/bin/Xorg

[SOLVED] Xorg freeze with nvidia GeForce 210 when resizing terminal
Hello,
I am working on Archlinux. My computer freeze when I resize a terminal window.
To reproduce the problem, I follow the below steps :
1- launch openbox (with tint2, xcompmgr and nitrogen)
2- start the "terminal" console emulator (with true transparent background)
3- launch opera and go to a website which take a while to load (with a lot of data) (I used http://www.lemonde.fr)
4- while the website is loading, switch to the terminal window and double click on the title bar to maximize it
5- the box freeze
I am not able to take the control back. I cannot exit or kill Xorg / Openbox. I cannot switch to a text terminal (ttyx). No key sequence is working.
Only a hard reset of the box is working.
I have tried to disable the transparent background of the terminal window without success.
I have tried to not start xcompmgr without success.
The problem also occurs with rxvt-unicode instead of terminal.
It seems the problem happens more often when using console emulator based on vte.
vte itself has the same issue.
The only workaround I have found is to disable the harware acceleration with the below parameter in the xorg.conf file:
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
The problem with this workaround are poor graphical performances.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea / clue to identify / fix this problem ?
Thanks and regards

Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
Thanks a lot
Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow. It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
Install the tool to downgrade
> yaourt -Sy downgrade
Downgrade
Note the item number can change
> downgrade xf86-input-evdev
Hit "s" key
Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
> downgrade xorg-server
Hit "s" key
Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
> downgrade xorg-server-common
Hit "s" key
Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

[SOLVED] Xorg Error with ATI Radeon 6650M
Dear ArchLinux Community,
this are my first steps in Arch but not in Linux. If you need more information to help me just let me know :-)
At first the basic installation works fine as I was expecting it.
After installing the Xorg (with xinit, fx86_ati, xorg-utils) I tried to start it with startx. An error appears and tells me to create the monitor config file. So I do.
Now an other error that tells me the "document 9 line 30" is wrong, cannot be done.
Sometime it tells me that xterm cannot be started or it shows up "exec twm" don't work.
This Post seems to be linked to the problem at first but there is no real solution.
Can anyone help me? Does anyone has some experience with that graficcard?
Greetings mutagen
Last edited by mutagen (2013-12-17 09:47:30)OK I found the problems:
- change the value 'tmw' in the xinit.rc to 'KWin' (KDE ;-) )
- forgotten to install xterm
Now xorg starts and with it KDE, everything works but a bit slow as gnunn said. I will try the AMD drivers as next step.
Thanks and can be closed :-) -

Does anybody else a a VGN-T150P or any of these problems? I'm not very good a writing/decoding xorg.conf files so if anybody could help it would be greatly appreciated
Last edited by jsh33 (2009-02-08 14:52:01)I download xf86-video-fbdev just for fun before I saw your post, I didn't do anything as far as I could see.
I commented these lines out:
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
Load "record"
Load "type1"
B, I didn't install any fonts but now I installed a buch of random fonts:
pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-cheapskate artwiz-fonts xorg-fonts-75dpi xorg-fonts-100dpi
and did some of what the X.org configuration wiki said:
fc-cache -fv
/usr/bin/fc-cache
/usr/bin/mkfontscale
/usr/bin/mkfontdir
ln -s /usr/share/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir encodings.dir
Then this I changed this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
EndSection
EDIT, halfway through this post I realized I type in biagio's code wrong, I re-typed it and now my X works!
Thanks Everybody for the help! , here's the working xorg.conf for reference:

[SOLVED]Xorg crash with some applications when using double screen
Hi,
I have a TV that I often use to watch dvd from my computer, and to do that I've set it up as a second screen in my xorg.conf, but on a daily basis I use a xorg.conf file with only my main screen. Up until last week I was able to use my second screen without problem, but yesterday I tried and it crashed instantly.
So I ran a few tests, amsn and vlc seems to be 2 applications that makes X crash (though there might be other, but I seem to be able to use chromium firefox and ktorrent just fine).
My WM is not to blame, I've launched X without any WM and vlc still makes X crash.
The problem does not happen when using a single screen.
I thought that my xorg.conf might be the problem, so I used nvidia-settings to create a new one, but that didn't change anything.
Here are my xorg.conf used for dual screen, and the logfile from the Xorg crash:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder62) Wed May 27 01:58:49 PDT 2009

You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

Hi,
xorg crashes for me with a segfault with these versions, first line of the backtrace mentions /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg (OsLookupColor+0x119) [0x594a29].
Anyone else seeing the same? I'll try with the previous NVIDIA driver in the meantime.
Thanks
edit: Solved by using nvidia 349.16, works now.

[SOLVED] - XFCE Start with volumed muted
Hi! I have a issue that I can not resolve. I configure the keyboard multimedia keys (xf86raise,lower,muted). at first time I use alsa command described in arch wiki, then the first use and that every time I start xfce the volumed is setting to mute. I come back to wiki and remaped the keyboard shortcuts with pulse command, but issue continue.
That is my setting editor in xfce: http://imgur.com/6BNAKAk

Last edited by elrengo (2014-12-05 01:12:55)I don't think it's an XFCE issue. I use KDE with alsa and pulseaudio and every time I reboot my volume is muted as well. I just unmute it with alsamixer every time, but it'd be cool to have a better solution.
EDIT:
After 15 seconds of googling, I found a solution.
Set your volume to whatever you want it to be when you boot and use the command:
alsactl store
This will save your current configuration and it will be the default one every time you boot.
Solution comes from this thread.

[SOLVED] Xorg crashes with radeon xpress 200, KDE and no KMS
Hi all, I'm experiencing an annoying problem with Arch. I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver, and in KDE 4.3.2, with compositing enabled, everytime I open a new window of any program and already having other window opened (for example, opening konsole and then opening chromium), X dies and goes to KDM login. I've made some tests and figured out that this occurs only when ati kernel modesetting is disabled and KWin's compositing is enabled. But when I enable modesetting, 3D compositing turns very slow. Is this problem ocurring with anyone else?
Everytime X dies, this message appears when I run dmesg:

Hi, I have extactly the same problem. Have you already rebuilt those patched mesa, libgl, and ati-dri?
This problem is really annoying, not least for coming so unexpected. But, as for me, I don't have time (and to be honest, any desire) to rebuild those with some cryptic patches. I just wonder, how such a big failure made into a mesa package?
[EDIT]: I reinstalled the KDE packages yesterday, I didn't encounter this problem in GNOME.

Multiple Error Messages, starting With 500 null Error
I've been experiencing multiple error messages with
ColdFusion 7.0 on Ubuntu Linux/Apache2 for the past several days,
starting with the 500 null error (see
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=f9e312a2),
which ocurred on only part of the site (a set of forms requiring
remote login). Now, the following errors are appearing on various
CF forms: "An I/O error while manipulating the sort index" and "An
exception occurred when setting up mail server parameters" and
finally, "No space left on device." All these errors are occurring
on add/edit forms and cffile upload forms that were working fine a
few hours ago and that haven't been changed.
Right now, I'm replacing the license.properties file to deal
with the 500 null error. My question is, has anyone else
experienced this smattering of other error messages in conjunction
with the 500 null error? Or fast on the heels of it? What's the
deal with the 500 null error, anyway? Has Adobe made any progress
with this issue?Okay, this is a followup to my previous post (
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=143&threadid=1165765&en terthread=y).
Replacing the license.properties file isn't sufficient in
addressing the 500 null error. We are running Ubuntu Linux. I
understand that I need to replace jvm 1.5 with jvm 1.4.2. I'm
honestly not sure how to detect on Linux which version of jvm is
running or how to make sure that version 1.4.2 is what is running
when we reinstall ColdFusion. If someone could help me with this,
I'd appreciate it. The 500 null error is eating my Web site like
the Langoliers. Even some static .cfm pages are failing now. -
Improve hierarchical query speed using 'start with' and 'conect by prior'
Hi
The query within the 'explain' runs about a second and I need to imporve it.
There are indexes set for both the child_id and the parent_id.
The total number of rows for the PRM_COMPONENTS table is 120000.
I'm working on 'Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production' in a Linux OS.
I've included the explain plan below.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Recursive Hierarchical Query with CONNECT BY/START WITH
I want to traverse a tree which has is not hierarchical in linear sense. You know, like :
A
B
C
D
E
C
F
D
E
C
You see that D, Eand C are repeated and C is under E as well as under B. I tried using CONNECT BY and START WITH but I get tripliate occurances of C under B, and 2 occurances of DEC under A and under F. Clearly this is not correct. I believe SQL3 has special way of handling with such recursive trees. How does O9i handle these constructs? Please help.CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE hierarchy

Start with Connect by: Showing the whole hierarchy even if child parameter
11g
Hi There,
In our case the manager_id i= employee_id for the top level manager. So when I run the sql, it eliminates the top level manager and shows the output for the next level onwards.
For the regular start with connect by option on the employee table the query used is
select case when connect_by_isleaf = 1 then 0 when level = 1 then 1 else -1 end as status,
level,
First_name as title,
NULL as icon,
EMPloyee_id as value,
First_name as tooltip,
NULL as link
from EMPLOYEES
start with Manager_id is null
connect by prior EMPLOYEE_ID = Manager_id
order siblings by First_namenow this will show the hierarchy and level starting with managers. Now if we provide the "start with Manager_id = 171" then since 171 is not a manager no rows are returned. So for this we can use something like
start with manager_id =171 or employee_id = 171However, the output would be only the employee record since 171 is the last child.
The requirement we had was that, Irrespective of the value entered, whether ultimate parent or ultimate child the output should still show the top down hierarchy. starting with that persons ultimate manager.
So for example if there are two employees, 170 and 171 and 170 is the manager of 171
If in this query I use Start with manager = 170. It will show me the manager and the child records.
However, if I use start with manager = 171 or employee_id = 171 then it will only show me only the child record. I want it to show me both the manager and employee records. i.e all the levels
I hope that make sense!
Thanks,
Ryan

Edited by: ryansun on Dec 13, 2012 1:59 AMHi Alberto,
I was using this query and the output is correct. Except for one thing, the nature of our data is such that the top most manager in this case has "Manager_Id" as null so we can use "start with Manager is null"
But in our case the manager id for the top most manager is the same as his employee id.
So If I modify the query, it then does not show the "top most managers record"
WITH entire_tree AS
SELECT *
FROM employees
START WITH manager_id = 171
CONNECT BY PRIOR employee_id = manager_id
UNION
SELECT *
FROM employees
START WITH employee_id = 171
CONNECT BY employee_id = PRIOR manager_id
SELECT CASE WHEN CONNECT_BY_ISLEAF = 1 THEN 0 WHEN LEVEL = 1 THEN 1 ELSE -1 END AS status
, LEVEL
, first_name AS title
, NULL AS icon
, employee_id AS VALUE
, first_name AS tooltip
, NULL AS link
FROM entire_tree
START WITH manager_id = 100
CONNECT BY PRIOR employee_id = manager_id
ORDER SIBLINGS BY first_name;the only change I made is from
Start with manager_id is null
to
start with manager_id = 100Basically, in this case the manager_id of the top most manager is the same as his employee id. So how can we have that condition incorporated instead of checking for null.
Thanks,
Ryan -

Hi.
I have data in a table which looks like:
Top level Step 3rd Level 4th Level Script Name
NORMAL_DAY Step 1 of NORMAL_DAY DATE_FEEDER Step 1 of DATE_FEEDER INT_EOD_DATE_FEEDER
NORMAL_DAY Step 2 of NORMAL_DAY EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD Step 3 of EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD SEND_MAIL_FXSPOTS
NORMAL_DAY Step 2 of NORMAL_DAY EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD Step 2 of EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD FXSPOTS
NORMAL_DAY Step 2 of NORMAL_DAY EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD Step 1 of EOD_FX_RATE_UPLOAD FX_FTPS_GET_EOD
NORMAL_DAY Step 3 of NORMAL_DAY CALENDAR_UPLOAD Step 1 of CALENDAR_UPLOAD CALENDAR
NORMAL_DAY Step 3 of NORMAL_DAY CALENDAR_UPLOAD Step 2 of CALENDAR_UPLOAD MDS_STOP
NORMAL_DAY Step 3 of NORMAL_DAY CALENDAR_UPLOAD Step 3 of CALENDAR_UPLOAD MDS_HOLIDAY
NORMAL_DAY Step 3 of NORMAL_DAY CALENDAR_UPLOAD Step 4 of CALENDAR_UPLOAD MDS_START
NORMAL_DAY Step 4 of NORMAL_DAY FA_VALUATIONS Step 1 of FA_VALUATIONS IMPORTMTM
NORMAL_DAY Step 4 of NORMAL_DAY FA_VALUATIONS Step 2 of FA_VALUATIONS INT_EOD_VALUATIONS
As you can see, it lends itself to a tree type structure. I am trying to display this information using the start with/connect by clauses.....
My initial query looks like:
select main.name "Top Level",
level2.name "Step",
level3.name "3rd Level",
level4.name "4th Level",
level5.name "Script Name",
level5.run_start,

This is a bit restrictive, so I need to make it more generic, because we can actually have more than 5 levels of depth.....
I haven't included the time element in the sample data. This also appears to be another conundrum.....how to display milliseconds in a reasonable date format?
Thank you very much in advance!
Devtry this way:

Lightroom 4 crashes when trying to open the slideshow module. I spent over three hours with both Adobe and Apple tech support and we know it is a permission issue but have not been able to get it solved. It started with the last upgrade to 10.8
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
