[SOLVED] XTerm and the Terminus font

I having difficulty getting the Terminus font to display correctly in xterm.
In .Xresources;
When I use "xterm*faceName:Terminus:style=Regular:size=10" I get missing characters, like the curly quotes in man pages.  This line is from the wiki.
When I use "xterm*font:-*-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" there are no missing characters (that I've found).  However, the display output (like paging a text file, for example) is much slower.  Too slow, so I go back to the missing characters config.
One other issue I've noticed, which may be related.  When I use the control-mousebutton menus, they display very slowly taking 2 or 3 seconds to draw. This happens even without loading my .Xresources file.
Also note I'm using fontconfig-infinality-ultimate.
My complete .Xresources file:
xterm*Background:black
xterm*Foreground:white
xterm*cursorColor:green
!xterm*pointerShape:arrow
!xterm*pointerColor:blue
xterm*VT100.geometry:80x32

Switching to rxvt-unicode (plus rxvt-unicode-terminfo) fixed my problem with speed and missing Terminus characters.  I'm using the setting:
URxvt*font:xft:Terminus:pixelsize=14
The part that I don't understand is, if I specify my font as follows I get all the characters but slow display:
URxvt*font:-*-terminus-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*
You commented that this flavor (the XLFD form) is slow with both xterm and urxvt.
As I noted, the problem is in how the server handles the fonts.
urxvt's equivalent to xterm's "-fa" option is a feature introduced by konsole (a "xft:" prefix on the string).
Actually you don't get "all" of the characters.  To see this, use xfd.  The 10646 encoding appears to be the
original terminus (a small set of 256 characters) with a few others added.  But most of the 0-65535 range is
filled with a filler-character.

If the fonts are installed on the OS they should be there already. If they were only available to CS5 they are probably in the fonts folder in the Adobe section of the Common files (location will be OS dependent), or they may be in ID's own fonts folder.

Thanks Laparra!! Thanks to your original comment again-- at least now I know if I need a "work-around" I now know at-least-that-the original-fonts in PS TOUCH seem to work. No wonder the default-font worked.. but not the NEW COPPERPLATE FONT.. YaY, mystery solved.. (almost)!   [i wished they'd change that default-font..and get a new default font...Lol.. It's pretty homely looking..Hee.) I normally have been using that original TRAJAN PRO FONT.. but the letter "J" almost looks like a straight line vs a rounded J.. which at least the new COPPERPLATE FONT (which is a more normal usable font--That's not boring like aerial is,etc... ]. So yeah that will be great when all those new fonts gets fixed! // It would be great too (on my PS TOUCH wishlist, if someday they could fix the TEXT BOX too.. to be able to better & easily add A LOT [more] TEXT on a graphic .. as I always have to go to the "OVER APP" [That's the name of the app in the APPLE store] on my iPad to do that... PS TOUCH only seems to let you do TITLES vs a more lengthy text on a project. If I want to make an EASY border I take the image I've been working on into the CAMERA+.Plus App.. • The font "Georgia" appears blurred and the pixel fonts I regularly view and use (such as Terminal and Silkscreen) do not appear properly.

So in a few of the websites I use (namely livejournal and dreamwidth), I always use georgia and either terminal or silkscreen for an account layout, but ever since upgrading the 19.0 beta, georgia looks readable but blurry while every word styled in terminal or silkscreen appears as a sans-serif font. Is there a way to go around this? Something in the encoding used?

The terminal font is probably a bitmap (raster) font and Firefox no longer supports such fonts, so you won't see them.
The Silkscreen font is available as a true type version and should work in Firefox.

  • [SOLVED] Dropbox and the fluxbox Slit

I have a minor problem concerning the Dropbox icon in the Slit.
I'm currently starting Dropbox by using the dropboxd-userspace daemon, but it doesn't create an icon in the Slit of fluxbox (although it's confirmed to be running). In order to get it to create an icon in the Slit I have to manually (re)start the dropboxd-userspace daemon.
So, how do I get it to automatically add an icon to the Slit?
Also, is it possible to get a list of the wiki articles not translated to a certain language? I'm planning on translating them into my native language (Swedish) but a list of the untranslated articles would help to make sure that I don't miss any crucial articles.

By slit you mean notification area?
Myself I start Dropbox by running dropboxd and nothing else. I guess you could just put it in your .xinitrc and have it startup autmatically with Fluxbox.

  • [SOLVED] bc and the decimal point

    Hello,
I've been trying out bc today and I've come across something:
If, for example, I try and calculate 1/10 in bc (whilst setting scale to, say, 5), I'll get .10000. Is there some way to always display the number to the left of the decimal point, even if it's a zero (i.e. 0.10000)? 5/2 will get 2.50000, which makes sense.
    Thanks for your help.

I did something quite similar, but using a bash script to concatene a '0' in front of the decimal place. I just thought there was a simple variable to set that I'd missed but I guess not. I wonder what the design purpose of missing out the 0 on the left hand side of a decimal place is.

  • [SOLVED] Zsh and the move to /usr/bin

  • [SOLVED]Conky and the phantom CPU

So I am running Conky with Fluxbox on a laptop with a duel core CPU. Playing around with Conkys different output and variables trying to get a set up I liked. I notice I was able to monitor three CPUs when there should only be two. I can't seem to find any documentation on why this would be. All output different numbers is it possible one is the sum of each core added together? I also noted that if I add ${cpu cpu3} to the code below it does not show a fourth or more CPUs.
    ${color}CPU: ${cpu cpu0}%
    ${color}CPU: ${cpu cpu1}%
    ${color}CPU: ${cpu cpu2}%
If someone could shed some light on this for me and maybe let me know which ones I should be using it would be greatly appreciated.

The conky man page has the information you need, and so does the online conky documentation: http://conky.sourceforge.net/variables.html
    man conky
    cpu (cpuN)
CPU usage in percents. For SMP machines, the CPU number can be provided as an argument. ${cpu cpu0} is the total usage, and ${cpu cpuX} (X >= 1) are individual CPUs.

Good question, thank you for asking
LFS -> FreeBSD : Because once you have done an LFS and you learnt so much there is nothing fun anymore in day to day life. However you feel strong enought to use a more confidential OS and that lead me to FreeBSD.
FreeBSD -> Gentoo : At that time I had a Zaurus and a Palm and other exotic devices. FreeBSD was great, but I missed some hardware support. However I was very satisfied witht he OS. So I chose Gentoo, which is quiet close to FreeBSD spirit (so is Arch), but benefit from Linux's bigger driver set.
Gentoo -> Kubuntu : After having spent hours, days and months recompiling the world, and finding out that my PC was not so fast I was fed up with configuring things. I wanted a distro which just works. I fell into Kubuntu arms, like a kid into his mother arms after he did something bad.
After a few months I discovered that the "it just works" principle is a lie. It is a lie for MS Windows, for Mac OS ... and for Ubuntu. Things never "just works". And when the time has come to fix and/or trick things, it is a real pain with those distros or other OS which claim that they "just work".
So I choosed the distro which make you understand what is going on, and make configuration tasks easy whithout having to rebuild the world with thousands of command line tools for day to day maintenance. This distro you know it well ... it is Archlinux

  • [SOLVED] Problems with xterm and terminus font

    Hi,
For some reason I can't get my xterms to display the terminus font correctly. It mainly shows up when I display man pages, all the dash characters show up as filled black boxes. It happens with other stuff too though. I've been asking in the IRC channel, but so far, no luck. Just other people confirming that it works for them.
I'm using fluxbox to start my xterm, and in .Xresources I have "xterm*faceName: terminus:pixelsize=14". I've got the default terminus-font package installed. Xterm is using the font at the correct size, it is just not displaying some characters. My locale is set to "en_US.UTF-8".
After spending hours searching the web for this, I'm left completely clueless as to what may be wrong. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Nope, does not seem to work. I've tried several ways of specifying the font in .Xresources. But none seem to work.
Yesterday I've decided to try using urxvt, and that actually works. I've now got this in .Xresources:
    urxvt.font: -*-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
    xterm.font: -*-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
And then when I try this in bash:
    printf "\u2010\u2011\u2012\u2013\u2014\u2015\u2016\u2017\u2018\n"
I get dash like characters in urxvt, and non-printable characters (displayed as black boxes) in xterm.

  • [solved]terminus font without xorg.conf

    Hi
I start X without a xorg.conf as every conf I tried did not work. Without the conf X works perfectly.
But I now want the terminus font for my WM and pacman installed them in /usr/share/fonts/local
This directory is not recognized by X by default.
Additional font directories are usually specified in the xorg.conf, but I don't have one.
I can manually set the font path with:
    mkfontdir
    xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/local
    xset fp rehash
I now see the font in xfontsel.
    But when I restart X, it's gone..
Is there a way to fix this?
