Some sort of malware
Gmail account had been compromised.
Thought it was from logging on to another computer that was infected.
Changed password on my netbook with Arch Linux here.
A day later, more suspicious activity, from THREE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.
Therefore there must be some form of malware on my netbook.
I've used Clyde to install packages from AUR, so I assume that's where the problem stems from.
How do I go about weeding out the malware?
I'd rather not have to go through the trouble of reinstalling Arch (USB drive is iffy now, constantly disconnects itself), but if I absolutely have to, I will.
Sad, sad days.
Check extensions in firefox (/ other browser), maybe there is something suspicious. Also, with this script, you can check if any files on your system are different from ones in repo:
#!/bin/bash
TEMP=$(mktemp -d)
cd $TEMP
echo ' => Comparing fs with pacman db...'
/usr/bin/pacman -Ql | cut -d ' ' -f 2- > db.txt && sort -u db.txt > db.sorted.txt &
sudo find / -xdev -type f -o -type l > fs.txt && sort -u fs.txt > fs.sorted.txt &
wait
comm -2 -3 {fs,db}.sorted.txt > non-db.txt &
comm -1 -3 {fs,db}.sorted.txt > missing.txt &
wait
rm {fs,db}{,.sorted}.txt
echo ' => Checking installed packages...'
pacman -Qq > pacman.qq.txt && sort -u pacman.qq.txt > pacman.qq.sorted.txt &
pacman -Slq > pacman.slq.txt && sort -u pacman.slq.txt > pacman.slq.sorted.txt &
wait
comm -12 pacman.{qq,slq}.sorted.txt > packages.txt
rm pacman.{qq,slq}{,.sorted}.txt
rm -f md5sums.txt && touch md5sums.txt
for package in $(cat packages.txt); do
echo -n " -> Checking $package..."
sudo powerpill -Sw --noconfirm $package
rm -rf pkgtmp && mkdir pkgtmp
bsdtar -x -C pkgtmp -f /var/cache/pacman/pkg/$(pacman -Sp $package | sed 's@.*/@@g')
cd pkgtmp
find -type f ! -name .PKGINFO ! -name .INSTALL ! -name .CHANGELOG -exec md5sum {} \; >> ../md5sums.txt
cd $TEMP
tput el1; tput cr;
done
echo " => Checking filesystem..."
cd /
md5sum --check --quiet $TEMP/md5sums.txt > $TEMP/diffrent.txt
echo " => Done. Check non-db.txt, missing.txt and different.txt from $TEMP"
It's very dirty (hacked from few other scripts), but it get jobs done. You will need change it to match your system. It check every file in filesystem, if it's from repo then it compares md5 sums, if it's not from repo then it should inform you about it (so don't worry about config files in /etc/, they should be different from stock ones).
And maybe run this from livecd, because if your system was hacked / compromised, then you can't even trust your /bin (eg. /usr/bin/md5sum may be changed to return original checksum on modified binaries).
Is there a way to print this output? The currently running applications I mean.
ps aux
Check "lsof -i -P -n", "last" and /var/log/* too.

When I try to open my safari browser, if freezes and a message pops up from onlinediagnosisnow.com. It's some sort of malware I don't know how to rid from my computer. Any suggestions?
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Tool. Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -

0x7fff9272a0There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked. -
I think some sort of Malware or Virus appropriated of a root file of my Firefox.
I need help. Every time I reset Firefox and then try to load any website, it gives an 'Untrusted Connection'. This message appears EVEN when I try to open things from the own browser, as the Add-on tab, for example, and it only goes away when I restart the computer. That doesn't make sense. Why does it only happen when I reset the browser?
Also loading tabs is VERY slow, if not stagnant, right now there are four tabs opened, all with very simple websites and Firefox is consuming 390k of RAM.
Right now I clicked on "Automatically add" and it gave me this "The addon could not be downloaded because of a connection failure on support.mozilla.org."
I don't think this is a security software problem, right now I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, and nothing else. This problem also happened when I used another security software.
Unless there is something else installed on my computer that I don't know.You can check the connection settings.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Network : Connection > Settings
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Options+window+-+Advanced+panel
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.
See "Firefox connection settings":

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br>
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br>
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Do I have some sort of Malware? HELP!
Hello!
Today my Macbook Pro suddenly turned off. I restarted the machine and ever since then it has been behaving oddly. When going to websites they either display very poorly with no images (please see attachment to see what I am talking about) and/or would display a pop up saying "Safari Can't Verify The Identity of The Website" "The certificate for this website is invalid. You might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be "___insert website here___" , which could put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the website anyway?"
The only other odd thing I have noticed is that something popped up saying my date and time are set to an odd time which could affect things. It appears it is set to January 1 2001.
Everything seems to be functioning normal (ie applications, etc). Any ideas on what the issue is?hockeymonkey44 wrote:

Sounds like a low power issue, connect to line with little other devices/machines connected.
Reset the SMC
Instructions to reset SMC
Reset the PRAM
Apple: PRAM reset
Hold the option/alt key down while booting (wired or built in keyboard) for Startup Manager, select OS X and set System Preferences > Startup Disk.
Hit System Preferences and set the time and date, it's updating to Apple's servers and your area.
Leave it connected to charge up. Check your battery status by option/alt click on the icon in the top corner or via Apple >About this mac > more info.
If the time and date are off, it could be responsible for all what you have seen.
Mac's don't have seperate batteries to maintain the PRAM like PC's do, they use the main battery which might not have been charged correctly, thus the SMC reset.
The PRAM holds the time and date between reboots and between OS versions.
Certificates have time and dates, then they expire.
One thing leads to another. -
Hello Last night while watching a video on Facebook a pop up window said I had a virus and to clean it click on the link. I did so and followed a prompt or 2 and then I thought this was a scam so I stopped. However I looked at my download file and it shows Mackeeper listed 4 times. Does this mean I have installed MacKeeper and if so does this mean I have installed some sort of malware/spyware or problems for my computer hence for myself.
Thank you for your help

What is going on with Apple? I've just downloaded their Mavericks and my computer is performing so badly, I'm wondering if Mavericks is some sort of diabolical malware! How can I get Mavericks out of my computer?
What is your year and specs of your Mac Pro?
How much RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and have negative effects on system performance.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary.
They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
These apps potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software company's that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk! -
I think I have a keylogger virus of some sort
Hi
I recently bought somthing from ASOS with my credit card and then the next day that credit card was used for things which I did not authorise, luckily american express sorted it out. I think I have some sort of keylogger virus or osmething becasue ASOS is a trusted website (right???) so I don't think anything went wrong there.
Any ideas on how to scan for it or get rid of it???
Cheers.Malware should not be your first thought here. There's almost certainly some other explanation. However, if you want to set your mind at ease, get Sophos and do a scan with that. And take a look at my Mac Malware Guide.
As to what the problem is, most likely the card number was stolen some time previously, and the fact that it was used the day after a particular purchase is likely to be nothing more than coincidence. There are many opportunities for credit card numbers to be stolen, and at this point it may be impossible for you to ever learn how it was stolen. Just cancel the card and have a new one issued. -

Hi
Level 2 posters and Above can report various posts.
When they do so they have various options that they can attribute as the issue.
I have reported your post.
I found the one block of text very difficult to read.

Tried to restore my ipod classic on a windows computer... there was some sort of failure and it is now stuck in "disk mode." The ipod is no longer being recognized by itunes.
I am having the exact same problem. My ipod has been stuck in disk mode for over two hours and now itunes is frozen.

My iPhone 4s didn't do it until the latest update so imnpretty sure it's on the apple server some sort of bug maybe? Not sure. But whatever it is I really would like to download apps. It won't let me download any apps and my phone is brand new.
Sorry guysy iPhone says unable to download application at this time and I try all day and it still won't let me download no matter how hard I try.

When I use Firefox the images and logos don't show up clearly/correctly. I'm using Windows 2000 Pro. and just installed Firefox 3.6.6. I'm sure I have the right graphics driver as I'm able to see the images and logos clearly in Internet Explorer. I only have the "default plugin 1.0.0.15" installed. I'm thinking that I'm missing a plugin or add-on of some sort, but I'm not sure which one(s). When I go to "updates" it says there were no updates available. When I go to "Add-ons" it gives a list of Add-ons but I'm not sure which would help my issue. Any help would be appreciated.:)

I have iPhone 4s, and using latest iOS. When I try to open any link from Twitter or Facebook, it goes to open some wrong webpage. My iphone seems to be infected or suffering from some spyware or malware. How can I remove this wrong link opening ? Please help me to resolve...
I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435
The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

I have recently had a problem with one of my hotmail accounts, some sort of virus sending random emails from my address book. Hotmail advised me to delete all contacts and change the password for that account, which I did on my laptop running windows XP. The change was successful and I was able to send and receive emails with no problem. I then had to change the account password on my iPhone 4s, which I did and it too was successful but when I came to change the password on my iMac, running the latest version of Lion it would not recognise the new password. I have tried to remove the account details and re-install but every time I go to add new account my old details are in the box. This is very frustrating as I use my iMac for all my profects and I need to access my email. Please help.
hi guys,
I had already deleted all reference to the hotmail account in question from the keychain access app, I have also tried to delete and re-instal the account details from within mail. The icon in the side bar dissapears but when I go to Add Account, the old account details are in the new account box. I then input my new password but am told that the server does not recognise it. If I access hotmail via google on the iMac I can get into my account with no problems. I am thinking there must be some other form of security system within the mac software that is blocking the new password. This is driving me nuts. I have been trying to resolve this for the last two days. Thank you for your advise anyway. -
I followed this procedure to check my files:
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
The following procedure will help whether your system has been modified. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.
I believe that I have a keylogger or some sort of spyware installed on my mac, please help!
