Something like Gradient Map in InDesign?

Hi,
Wondering if in the new version of InDesign (CS6) there might be any way to do anything similar to the Gradient Map adjustment layer in Photoshop? I'm open to a plugin or any way to use a Photoshop adjustment layer in InDesign if that's at all possible.
We just need to colorize a bunch of grayscale images in InDesign and would like more control than the 2 colors you can get when doing it traditionally in InDesign (image color & background color). With a gradient map, we can add a dark/black shadow color and/or a light/white highlight color in addition to the main foreground/background colors. This allows for the same tonality as you could get in InDesign but with much more depth & contrast, much richer.
We just won't have time to be constantly opening all images in Photoshop to do this and do any color updating that needs to happen. Too many images for this to be practical.
Thanks. Any other creative ideas are welcome.

No gradient maps, but have you tried colorizing using a gradient swatch (I haven't, but I'm not sure it won't work)? You probably won't have as much control over stop positions or directionality, but you might want to see waht it can do for you.

  • Anything similar to Gradient Map in InDesign?

    Hi, we're using InDesign CS3, and wondering if there is anything in the new version (or any plugins/techniques) that would more closely match the effect possible when using a gradent map on an image in Photoshop?
    We have a project that uses many historic photos that are black & white. We need to colorize these with a good deal of control (so we can get predictable results, and change easily). We would usually colorize in InDesign by choosing a foreground and background color. Simple enough.
    But I know in Photoshop you achieve this by using a gradient map, and have the option of including more than just 2 colors. The advantage to this is that you can include a black (or very dark version of your 'foreground' color) for the darkest shadows, and/or a white (or light 'background' color) for the lightest highlights, in addition to your 2 typical 'background' and 'foreground' colors. The result, is that these images have the same exact coloration across most of the image, but look much richer and more dynamic with the extra darkness/lightness on the extreme ends.
    So, of course, we could adjust all images in Photoshop as outlined above, but there will be a LOT of images, and there will always be changes to the colors along the way. If we do all in Photoshop, that would mean any change to a color, even if slight, would mean opening/editing/saving all corresponding Photoshop images. Very time-consuming! In InDesign, it's as simple as changing the swatch color for all affected images.
    - Anything new in CS4?
    - Any other way to go about this?
    THANKS!

    Nothing really analagous to gradient map. You can use blending modes like Multiply or Screen, but that's not new.

  • Gradient map not selectable

    Hello! I'm using Photoshop CC on Mac and for some reason the gradient map option is not selectable at all. I'm working with PSD images that had been rasterized, duplicated, and merged. I am able to apply some adjustments like Hue/Saturation, Desaturation, Photo Filter, Channel Mixer, etc., but can't apply Threshold, Gradient Map, Invert, Brightness/Contrast, Curves, and a few others.
    Am I possibly working in a certain mode that wouldn't allow me to do such things? Or did I make certain adjustments to the layer that made these options unavailable for me?
    I'm running low on options and I'm wasting my time trying to figure out something so simple. Any help? Thank you.

    I'll make a note of that. I'm so used to RGB/8, I wouldn't have factored that in. Good work!

  • How to make a handwriting font look like real handwriting in InDesign CS5

    This is a script I've written (AppleScript) that addresses the  problem most handwriting fonts have — they look like fonts, mostly  because they're settled so regularly along the baseline and their glyphs  are so uniform.
    It began as a way for me to address a  need for a project I was working on, something designed to look like a  scrapbook. I was using the "Journal" typeface designed by Fontourist  (http://www.dafont.com/journal.font), which gave me a good balance of  readability and organic feel, but of course it had the same issues as  all other fonts of its ilk.
    To address that I wrote a  script to trawl the taxt frames in a specified CS5 INDD document,  looking fist to see if they had that font as their active one, after  which the script shifts each glyph up or down the baseline by a random  amount, gives each glyph a random stroke weight change, and finally  tints each glyph a random amount off of its basic tint.
    Each  of these changes is very subtle, with the result being something that  looks considerably more organic and hand-made than the font did out of  the can. The script should be easily modified by anyone who wants to run  it using a different font instead of "Journal". Here it is. Enjoy!
    -- This script changes the  baseline offset, stroke width, and color tint
    -- of any type set in the "Journal" typeface to randomized values,  giving
    -- the text a much more organic look and feel.
    -- Written by Warren Ockrassa,  http://indigestible.nightwares.com/
    -- Free to use, modify and distribute, but I'd prefer attribution.
    -- Note that this script can take quite a while to execute with  larger
    -- or more complex files.

                         if word 1 of myFont is "Journal" then
                             repeat with thisCharacter in (characters of  myText)
                                 -- Randomize the values of baseline shift,  stroke, and tint
                                 set baselineShift to ((random number from -5  to 5) / 10)
                                 set strokeWeight to (((random number 10)) /  100)

                         end if
                         set theFrame to (theFrame + 1)

    else
         display dialog "Operation cancelled" buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end if

    For the fonts, the really cheap and dirty method would probably be to load the names of the fonts you want to use into an array variable in the AppleScript, then get a random index count to grab one of the font names out of that array.
    The script as it exists now goes character by character - you'd want to revise it so it went word by word instead, or else you'd end up setting each word's character to one of your random font choices. Instead of
    repeat with thisCharacter in (characters of  myText)
    you'd do something like
    repeat with thisWord in (words of  myText)
    As for loading an array variable in AppleScript - I've not done that before, but it's probably something like:
    set myFontArray to {"Papyrus", "Arial", "Comic Sans"}
    The curly braces are necessary, as it appears that AppleScript supports lists rather than arrays (a minor but not entirely unimportant detail). Anyway, from there, you'd grab one font at a time, randomly, probably like this:
    set myWordFontNumber to random ( length of myFontArray ) - 1
      set myWordFont to item myWordFontNumber of myFontArray
    You do the first line to get a random number based on the number of items in your list of fonts. You subtract 1 from it because the count on the actual list begins at 0 rather than 1, which means that sometimes you'll get a random number that's actually 1 larger than the number of items in the list, and you'll never see the first item (which is at position 0). This is a very old-school gotcha when working with arrays and lists - a ten-item list will count from 0 to 9, not 1 to 10.
    From there, you'd set the given word in your text frame's font to the name of the font you pulled out of the myFontArray variable. You'll want to make sure that the font names you load into your list are the actual names of the fonts you're working with - the examples I used here probably won't work.
    Please note that this is just a high-level gloss of what you'd need to do in order to modify the script. You'll have to hit the AppleScript documentation (and InDesign's scripting documentation) to get the precise syntax.

  • Gradient Map in CS4

    I've just installed Photoshop CS4 but the Gradient Map tool is not working for me as in CS3.
    I want to change colors of black lines on a clear background ( in a CMYK document) to 100% cyan.
    I have done this many times in CS3 using the Gradient Map and setting both beginning and end points to 100% C and other colors to 0%. However, now it comes out to 69%C15%M0%Y0%K.
    I have not changed any defaults in the PhotoShop program. Solutions?

    open the scanned file into Photoshop
    1. change the doc type to CMYK
    2. duplicate the layer, change the background to white
    3. Apply Threshold to Layer 1 , adjust the slider to desired density, thickness of line. use Wand tool the select and delete white background.
    4. Apply GradientMap (color chip 100%Kto100%K) the get Black (100%K) lines.
    5. Then I lasso-select the lines I want to be Cyan and com-J to put them on a new layer and I refine the lines with erase-pencil.
    6. Apply GradientMap , this time with color chip 100%Cto100%C to this new layer.
    It takes much longer to explain than to do it. Except for refining (which depends on the complexity of drawing) it only takes seconds.
    The GradientMap should apply a given color(s) to the lines but some setting is different in CS4 on installation and I would like to find how to set it correctly so that Gradient Map will work correctly.

  • Using Gradient Map Adjustment Layer to Emulate Curves

    In PSE 4, the Curves function isn't available, either natively or via add-on
    tools. Personally, I like adding a modest S-curve to many of my photos to
    improve the contrast. Oh, well...
    I remember, however, that Susan Stewart (one of the early members of this
    forum) had developed a technique to use the Gradient Map Adjustment Layer as
    a curves surrogate. I'm not sure exactly what she did, but I believe it
    involved using the black-to-white gradient and setting the layer blend mode
    to Overlay. The gradient can be modified by adding Color Stops along the
    continuum between black and white to create the S-shape.
    Anyone have any experience with this approach - or another Curves
    replacement to consider?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
    It involves using the Luminosity blend mode. Here's a PDF that gives instructions. Skip down to Version two page 3 or 4 for instructions on using a gradient map to simulate curves.

  • Gradient map for shatter

    Hi
    I've ceated this shatter map with After effects.
    http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/2644/bild2yr8.png
    It's made out of 256 solids via Scripts and expressions.
    Now,how can i create a gradient map so i have got control over all pieces .
    I'd like to reveal them in a specific order.First row reveals from left to right then second row from right to left and so on...one row after the other.
    Any expressions to give them a slight color change?

    Position:
    //===begin expression===
    //grid size
    gSize=16;
    //grid spacing
    gSpace=30;
    //rows and columns
    pRow=Math.ceil(index/gSize);
    pCol=Math.ceil(index-(pRow-1)/gSize);
    //positions
    X=pCol*gSpace-gSpace*gSize*(pRow-1);
    Y=pRow*gSpace;
    [X,Y]
    //===end expression===
    Opacity:
    //===begin expression===
    //grid size
    gSize=16;
    //rows and columns
    pRow=Math.ceil(index/gSize);
    pCol=Math.ceil(index-(pRow-1)/gSize);
    iStart=pRow*gSize-(gSize-1);
    iEnd=pRow*gSize;
    oStart=100/Math.pow(gSize,2)*(pRow-1)*gSize;
    oEnd=100/Math.pow(gSize,2)*pRow*gSize;
    if(pRow % 2 == 0)
    mOpa = linear(index,iStart,iEnd,oStart,oEnd) //even row
    else
    mOpa = linear(index,iStart,iEnd,oEnd,oStart) //odd row
    [mOpa]
    //===end expression===
    Use this in a pre-comp with white solids on top of a black solid to generate a b/w gradient.

  • Gradient Map selecting colors?

    Recently, while trying to use the Gradient map tool (CS6, Mac 10.9), it seems like the eyedropper can only select colors from the layer I am currently mapping, or my swatches, and not colors from any other layers of my image. I tried resetting my preferences and resetting my eyedropper tool, and it still doesn't seem to be working properly. How can I apply a gradient map and choose colors from the other layers in my image? Thanks!

    I don't know if this helps, but anyway, you can see I'm working with a lot of layers. I'm trying to make a particular leaf layer match the other greens in the picture, but while gradient mapping clicking with the eyedropper tool on other layers doesn't register (on the screenshot it looks like an arrow though). The layer does not cover the whole image and you can see many other layers in the document area.

  • Gradient Map uses

    I'm trying to compile a list of uses for the Gradient Map in Photoshop (for my own use and yours). Can you add to the list (please)? If you have a link to an example or a tutorial that would be great as well!
    Toning images using gradients (e.g. sepia)
    Recolor or colorize B/W images/art
    Target areas for selection (example here: http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=132)
    I know there are others and some of the above cover a broad area, if you have something more specific, please feel free to add that.
    Example of a toned photo using Gradient Map adjusment layer:

    My take is that you are simply seeing the lossy conversion between CMYK and RGB. The values in the color picker appear to be fundamentally RGB based.
    If I check the gradient color stops in the color picker  by reopening the gradient dialog immediately after creating  the gradient  the CMYK values are preserved.  If, however, I do any other operation, say click on the base layer, and then open the gradient,  the values have changed. So it appears that once the gradient is incorporated into the work flow the CMYK - RGB conversions take place giving the results you see.

  • About Gradient Map in one action, call for help!!!

    Things I meant is to import EPS files into photoshop (already CMYK, 300dpi), then make into single black&white (things like c0 m0 y0 k48 etc.) by using Gradient Map, which to ensure there is empty in all the channels except black.
    I recorded this process in one action, for I got massive pics to solve out.
    But it came weird.
    After the action was done, the pic didn't became single black. Instead of that, there are still amounts in those 3 channels (things like c10 m7 y13 k34).
    It drives me crazy...Anyone can give a hand?
    Cheers.

    Here's a truly radical idea. Convert your email to IMAP (get a new email server) and keep everything stored on the mail server. That way each computer gets exactly the same thing. I use IMAP mail this way with four different computers. Never a hiccup, no downloading mail, no data stored on my computer except what I want stored on the computer, no syncing between the computers just to keep mail current on each one. In fact I can get on your computer, configure your Mail to use my email server and see everything as it would be on any of my computers. I could send mail from your machine, read replies, etc. When I get home and open my own Mail I'll see everything as if it had been done from my home computer.
    You can then use MobileMe to sync your mail rules and configuration changes if you want, which is what I do.

  • CMYK gradient maps don't work correctly in Photoshop CS 4

    Gradient maps built with CMYK colors in Photoshop don't work correctly in CS4.  For one particular client I often use a brushed steel background. To control color shifts on the press I used a gradient map blending from C0 M0 Y0 K0 to C40 M20 Y20 K100. This has worked great in the past, but once you open that gradient map in CS4 and start editing that gradient at all, even if you edit it back to the original CMYK numbers, the colors shift drastically, and if you watch the info palette, the colors get totally remapped to a different black. I can go in a reset the black to the C40 M20 Y20 K100 mix, but it doesn't work. When I go back in, it completely changes them.
    Since this works fine in CS3 and not in CS4, is this a program bug? I'm not doing anything differently.
    It was a great way of controlling neutral gray mixes (and other color mixes) for CMYK printing. Is there a fix for this? Adobe, is anyone addressing this bug? I've read other threads on this, but with no solutions.
    Kent Bingham
    Digital Illustration and Design
    I couldn't attach the .psd files, so I uploaded here for reference:
    http://www.kentbingham.com/gradientmap-error.zip

    I have not gone back to check how this is handled in CS3 yet I could duplicate your problem in CS4.  The changing of numbers in the CMYK looks like it has to do with the color mangement settings in Photoshop.
    I was able to make sure the numbers input to the gradient map did not chang.  I did this by going to Edit>Assign Profile  and then clicked the option "Don't Color Manage this Document"
    This may not solve your problem directly yet it does indicate that the problem you have (or that Adobe has) is related to how the color management is being handled.
    So one question would be are you using the "exact" color management settings in CS4 as you did in CS3 and were those in place when you imported the file into CS4.  If not, and if you did not have the correct warning options set, there may have been a color setting change of which you were not aware.
    While I was able to keep the original settings from changing in the Gradient Map, there was still a problem in CS4 where the Lab values would change (and the appearance on the LCD screen) after doing any color picker editing and changing the CMYK values back to 40 20 20 100.  This definetly seems related to the color model/probile/management system in place.  So it appears that even though I can get the CMYK numbers to stay and not change, there is still a bug when making no changes to the color management settings, and the CMYK values are the same, that the Lab values and the appearance on the screen change.
    Hope you can get Adobe's attention.  Looks like a bug to me.

  • Gradient Maps doesn't work properly when editing a photo from Lightroom

    When I open a file in photoshop to edit and apply a gradient map to the image, it works fine. However, when I open an image from Lightroom (right click image, EDIT IN Photoshop) and apply the exact same adjustment layer, NOTHING HAPPENS. It's the strangest thing and for the life of me, I can't figure out what I'm doing different! As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the image from Lightroom is in 16 bit ... but when I change it to 8, still nothing happens.
    My process: I apply a pastel gradeient on top of the image (preset: brown, tan, beige) and choose the "Pin Light" blending mode. Normally (as in opening an image outside of Lightroom), this gives my picture the desired effect. But when I open the image from Lightroom and apply the exact same gradient map, nothing happens. If I shift the color within the selector in the map window, I can eventually get the gradient map to reveal itself and the picture to show different colors, but ONLY if I move the color selection to the more saturated end and away from where I actually need it to be.
    My setup: I'm working on an iMac, OS X > Lightroom 5 > Photoshop CS5. I'm clicking on DNG pictures within Lightroom and then selecting EDIT IN Photoshop > then working within photoshop.
    Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated! Thank you.

    Why not keep things simple and create a shortcut on the user's machine that uses this target command:
    \\SRV2\d$\dir1\subdir1\subdir2
    Simply because dir and subdirs are no constants.
    Just imagin you have a webpage that looks like this :
    Proj. #   Custommer    directory                                                bunch-of-other-stuff
    4538      Microsoft        \\SRV2\Big_contracts\US\2014\software   etc

    4540      So-else          \\SRV3\Big_contracts\EU\2013\software    etc
    Instead of the full path you have a small folder icon (to save space). And clicking on this icon will bring you directly to said path.
    It was extremely convenient, very user-friendly. And it has been working for over a decade, and today my users are frowning...
    I think you are pushing psexec.exe beyond its limits.
    No, it's working perfectly on Win XP. I just find it too sad that it no longer works on Win 7. I view this as a regression.
     When you run it the way you do it you actually do open a further Explorer process but it remains invisible to you because it runs in the background.
    No, the user does get a new explorer windows that pops to the foreground. The
    only trouble is that it opens in "My Documents".
    Of course I could (try and...) teach them to right-click, copy the link, paste it in an explorer and so on, but they are going to hate me.
    Thank you

    Can you package files in Premiere Pro CS6 like you do in Indesign so you don't looses links?
    We are sorting out our filing system and want to be able to move files and rushes to new locations without loosing the links between them, is their a way of doing this? When using InDesign you package a file and it creates a folder of links and fonts, something like this would be useful.

  • CS4 Gradient map in CMYK mode bug (program error)

    Hi,
    when using gradient map or gradient map adjustment layer in cmyk mode, colors values after apply are different from values that i entered,
    for example:
    entering:
    C=0
    M=0
    Y=0
    K=100
    after apply on image, read values are like from RGB:
    C=77
    M=75
    Y=62
    K=81
    Importing file with gradient map from cs3 are ok until i click on the adjustment layer.
    I have catalog printed with this bug and colors was printed bad!
    Please help with this!

    I know this already!
    Question is how to do it correct? I think it's CS4 internal error and it's quite important bug for cmyk workers.
    Maybe development team will interest with this?
    It's more dangerous in dtp and catalogues, brochures etc. printing.
    I had troubles with this error when printed ~1k borchures - client didn't accept this.

  • Gradients in CS5 InDesign ("How the...")

    I sure hope I can get some answers to this one - I posted another question regarding leading in Paragraph Styles two days ago and by now it has 28 views and 0 answers! Such support.
    Just designing a two-color gradient in CS5 InDesign is headache enough...click on Swatches control panel, see that there is no "New Gradient Swatch" button at the bottom (despite what the books and online help say), click the microscopic menu at the upper right of the panel, select "New Gradient Swatch", only to find that there are only two choices - Linear or Radial - and fiddle with every feature in the window to finally get the color range you want.
    Frankly, five very expensive versions of Creative Suite later, I am both amazed and disgusted at the fact that:
    - There is no horizontal gradient, only "Linear" (and that is vertical; that is, each color within the range goes top-to-bottom; the range itself is left-to-right)
    - There is no seeming way to get a horizontal gradient, or a vertical gradient with the colors reversed. InDesign decides the orientation and polarity (in this instance, dark (left) to light (right) ) of your gradient
    And before anyone launches into a lecture about the Window > Color > Gradient option, I already tried that. I don't know what your copy of CS5 InDesign displays on your system, but on mine, that window has no OK button. In other words, you can play around all day long with the Window > Color > Gradient window but you cannot apply what you've settled on to your current project because there is no way to tell the program that "OK, I'm done, please apply the options I've selected to my project or selected swatch."
    So, tell me truly, how can a newly-bald user design a simple two-color gradient that has vertical range, where lightest color is at the top and darkest color at the bottom?

    It's not really that hard. To make a new gradient Select New Gradient Swatch from the Swatches flyout. You should get a dialog that looks like this
    When you click on one of the gradient stop at thebottom of the ramp you will activate the ability to choose a color for that stop in the color mode you want
    If you choose CMYK you can mix the color or you can choose Swatches and choose from existing swatches in the file.  This is how it looks with both selected
    When youOK the dialog a new swatch is added to the Swatch panel. You can apply it by drawing or selecting an object in your file and making the fill box active . It should look like this
    In the Gradient window shown to the right of the object you can change the angle by using either the Reverse button or the angle window like this
    Or you can use the Gradient tool from the tool box to drag across the gradient to change it as you want
    If you want here's the difference in a radial gradient changed with the gradient tool from the tool box
