Sony DVD recorder

I am not sure if I am ******** or if this is a valid problem. I do not seem to be able to import the video files from my Sony DVD recorder (ie handycam) even though I have finalised the disks and have tried to import them as suggest under apple help. Is there a trick to this?

Hello Kittycat,
your DVD camcorder records in MPEG format, which is not supported by iMovie. In order to edit your footage with iMovie you'll have to convert.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ: Using Mpeg (DVD) footage

and also Matti Haveri's website: How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV

  • Hi ThereMy Sony dvd recorder has stopped working

    Hi There
I have a Sony DVd recorder and Sony TV, both bought from Sony shop 5 years ago, so out of warranty.
last night, recorder stopped showing Title List/Guide, and eventually, no power light.
Have checked fuse, and ******ed new one, no luck.
Went to local tv shop, and he said 4 customers have called today with similat problem, any advice please.

I'm sorry to know your Sony DVD recorder is no longer working.
May I have the complete model number of your unit? You can get either from the front page of the manual or from the back of the player. (e.g., RDRGX255)

  • I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie to MPEG -4 Video both worked well on my iMac but will not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD RW and DVD-RW.  Any suggestions?

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie using MPEG-4 Video.  Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs.  I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD.  iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable.  Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac.  I am at a loss as to what I can do.  I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange.  Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4.  You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD.  I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.

  • My Sony Dvd recorder is not recognized

Since I downloaded iMovie 09 I can get it to read my videos off of my Sony dvd camcorder. iMovie 08 worked well with the Sony but now I can't upload videos. Am I doing something wrong or is iMovie 09
    not compatable

I have similar problem with Sony dvd 505E, Imovie09 will not import files, says they are not readable, however Iphoto is able to read from same Handycam the still pictures stored on the memory stick. This Sony handycam, using same USB connection, has no problem importing movies into Windows PC but i would like to edit in Imovie09.

  • Inability to play on Mac DVD burned on Sony DVD Recorder

I burned an old VHS onto a Sony DVR-R disc, using a Sony RDR-VX560 Recorder. The resultant DVD played fine on the Sony TV set, but I could not play it on my Mac. On insertion into the Mac, I got a Disc icon titled: "SonyDVD_RECORDERVOLUME" but the Disc did not open automatically, as usual, nor would it open in the DVD Player app. Upon double clicking the icon a screen w/the DVD title as its name appeared w/a folder titled "DVD_RTAV" opened, w/2 items enclosed. The 2 enclosed folders, were titled "VR_MOVIE.VRO" and "VR_MANGR.IFO" respectively. Upon opening the folders, each produced a DVD Player app msg: "There was a problem opening the media. The media type is not supported." This was my 1st attempt at dubbing though I have been successfully burning and playing the same Sony discs on this Mac and TV for some time w/minimal problems. I'm at wits end trying to resolve this problem and will certainly appreciate any help. Many Thanks.

Did you finalise the disc on the Sony?
PS - This has nothing to do with iDVD, which is the software used to create DVD's on a Mac. You have posted the question in the wrong forum really, it would be better to post the question here :

  • How do I record music from Itunes to a dvd to play on a Sony DVD player dvp sr500h?

How do I record music from Itunes to a dvd, that shows it is finishing but will not play on my hardrive or on a Sony DVD player, dvp sr500H?

If you are burning a DVD directly from iTunes (a feature which is present in older versions of iTunes but which was removed in iTunes 10.4), that creates a computer-type DVD for backup only and cannot play in any DVD player I know of. If you want to create a disk that can play in a DVD player, you'll need to burn an audio CD, an MP3 CD if the player will accept MP3 CDs, or use some other software.
    Regards.

  • I have a Sony RDR-HDC300 DVD Recorder

I have a Sony RDR-HDC300 DVD Recorder hooked up via HDMI cable
Recently when turning it on, and it is "loading" it only stays on for about 10 mins.
The loading does not complete and the recorder turns itself off and the TV screen tells me it has no signal.

This camera works with both iMovie 09 and iMovie 11 (and all the older iMovies, too.)
If you read the supported cameras page, you will notice that no miniDV cameras are listed individually, because they all work.
For this camera, you need a Firewire connection. USB will not work, except to remove photos from the camera if you take stills.
If you have FW800, you need a 9 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
If you have FW400, you need a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries) when importing.

  • DVD from TV DVD Recorder plays on one iMac and not another

I've recorded DVD+Rs on a Sony DVD/VHS analog/digital recorder. They play fine on my white iMac, but appear as a blank burnable disk on my aluminum iMac. Could this be a software issue of something I've added to the white iMac they do play on? Darned if I know what it is...
    Any troubleshooting suggestions gratefully accepted.

  • Error message when burning to Sony DVD-r discs

Just bought 200 Sony DVD-R printable discs from Costco, and I am trying to burn a 15 minute short film in DVD studio pro. The DVD just spins in Formatting and I get this message:The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error.
I have burned this same film many times with my Nexxtech DVD's and it works fine, but the Sony discs don't seem to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    D-

Try burning at the lowest possible speed (probably DVDx2) and see if they work.

  • Recording a DVD with LG DVD Recorder and FIOS Standard Set Top Box

I have FIOS Standard Set Top Box, a Sony TV, and an LG DVD Recorder. I cannot figure out how to record a TV program on my LG DVD Recorder. I have 3 remotes: a FIOS Remote, an LG DVD Recorder Remote and a Sony TV Remote. What remote/s should I use, and in what order?  Thanks.

    1) Connect coax (cable) wire from the wall to the RF input on the back of the STB.
    2) Connect coax (cable) from the cable out (might say "to TV/VCR") on the back to the STB to the cable in on the back of the TV.
    3) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the STB to the input of the DVD player.
    4) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the DVD player to the back of the TV.
Let me know if any of those aren't possible based on your equipment. The SD STB (QIP 2500) has very few outputs so there are not a lot of options for a setup like this).
In order to record a program, you will have to do the following:
-Set the STB to whatever channel you want to record and keep it on. You will not be able to change the channel, because the DVD player will be recording whatever the STB outputs (the same feed the TV gets). With FiOS, it is not possible to have a DVD do the tuning for you, because it is an all-digital signal and most DVD players can only tune to analog chs 1-99.
-Set the DVD player channel to "input" or something of the like. This will get your DVD player to show the signal from the STB.
-Set your TV channel to composite input. This will show you whatever the DVD player is getting from the STB.
-If you want to watch normal TV without the DVD player, you can turn your TV to Ch. 3 or 4 and get the feed from the STB without having to turn on your DVD player.

  • DVD's not working on Sony dvd player

I just bought some TDK DVD-R 16x. I burned a DVD with my iMac G4 in iDVD. I tried to play it in my Sony DVD player and it said it was was not allowed because there were limitations or something. Can I fix this or do I need new DVDs??

Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the
    DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may
encounter. Once the disc image is created,
double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that
should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn
the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually,
you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which
    OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in
Applications folder), click on the virtual disc
(maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the
Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your
SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn
icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R
preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait.
Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor
over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to
work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower
for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to
click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This
may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk
to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD.
Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD
Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and
open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio
    disks.)

I'm reading through the forums trying to figure why I am not able to play a DVD burned in iDVD that is "R", but the "RW" ones work fine.
Your post is very helpful and I've looked at the links suggested too. I just want to make sure I'm understanding. I've copied the movie to my hard drive using iMovie and then created an iDVD project. I then need to use either Disk Utility or Toast to make the DVD. I do not need to use the "burn" feature in iDVD. Is that correct?
I would appreciate any other suggestions. Maybe there is something else in the settings or preferences I need to adjust.
    Thanks so much.

  • Standalone DVD recorder as converter

I'm tired of looping through my camera every time I want to output something to tape. I'd like to have a capture stream and a playout stream set up all of the time to minimize setup time. Is anyone out there using a standalone DVD recorder as a converter / recorder? My Sony RDR-GX315 is not recognized by Final Cut.
    pb g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Not exactly sure what the poster wants to do with the DVD recorder but here is my experience:
At home I have a fairly new BenQ DVD recorder. The only way I have successfully recorded to it from the puter was by first passing thru my Canopus ADVC 110. FW from the puter to the Canopus, S-VHS from the Canopus to the BenQ. For best results, I first export the sequence to a Quicktime movie then play that back from the Viewer. Works quite well. The one time I tried to pass thru the BenQ to one of my NTSC monitors I got kind of sketchy playback results; freezes and jitters
At the studio, I have an older Panasonic DVD Recorder. I go FW out of the G4s to the deck directly and can monitor and record with very little probs. Again, I find if I export to QT movie first and play that into the Panny, it works very well. Also works great for passing thru to the NTSC monitors.
The other day, due to some gear being in the field, I tried passing a VHS deck thru the Panasonic to the puter ... that did not work so well.

  • UJ-845 + Sony DVD-R media: VIDEO at 8X, DATA at only 2X????

    Drive: Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845
    Revision: D8PB
    Media: Sony DVD-R, 250MR47LS3. 120 min, 4.7 GB, 1x-8x compatible.
When I create a Finder burn folder and try to burn a data DVD, to the Sony DVD, the only choices it offers me are 1X and 2X.
But, when I burn a video DVD, I am not asked for a burn speed... and in fact the burn takes places as 8X. And the resulting DVD passes verification and plays perfectly.
    (Apple-branded DVD-R's offer 1X, 2X, 4X, and 8X for burning data).
Why should video and data DVD maximum burn speeds be different?

    Finally......
TDK "video" DVD-R, 1-8x. On sale at Target stores (you might need to go to the next aisle, as it is marketed for "video" recording, so it was near the VHS tapes...). $14 for 25. Blue label on package, UPC code 020356485986.
"drutil status" gives the media code TTG02 and 4x burning speed!

  • Sony DVD Camcorder to iMac

I've been trying to figure out a way to import video from my Sony DVD camcorder. I've searched these forums and so far much of the advice is not to buy Sony DVD camcorders. While I understand the good intentions of this advice, I like all the other advantages which the Sony DVD camcorders offer.
That being said, I have two questions which will help me decide whether I really should return the Sony DCR-DVD 205 and/or use a Sony DCR-DVD 305 instead:
    1) Some others have suggested exporting the A/V out from the DVD camcorder and feeding it into the analog port of a DV camcorder. I happen to have a DV camcorder (broken lens but fine for this purpose) which can record the analog input onto a DV tape. This allows me to use the firewire out from the DV camcorder to the iMac just fine. I have tried this technique and while it is a hassle it appears to work well. Here's my question: Am I losing a significant amount of quality or resolution by converting DVD to analog to DV to iMac? The picture quality seems OK so far but I'm wondering if I am missing something.
    2) So my next question is thiis: Is it worth getting the 305 model instead? Unlike the 205, the 305 has a USB 2.0 port. But from everything I have seen, USB 2.0 ports are far from ideal when it comes to transferring digital quality video.
Thanks in advance. I am going a bit crazy trying to figure out what to do about this.
    iMac g5

welcome TeamIguana to the  board ...
you've done your research on this board about DVDcorders, so you do know, the iApps don't support such devices ... you miss the convenience of simply plug-in/hit import/done... and some others...
    you have two options:
convert from dvd (please use the forum search for that popular issue), or, as you wrote, a playback-analoge-digital conversion...
the loss in pic quality happens while playback a dvd...- you record in a codec called mpeg2, which is a very, very effective compressor...- a standard iM project of 2h=~26GB gets compressed with mpeg2 to fit onto a 4.7Gb single-layer dvd-r...
to be so effective, mpeg uses different "tricks", e.g. it doesn't store every frame of the 30fps a video contains... dv (as on miniDV, or iM's native internal codec) does so... as you probably know: mpeg2 is a delivery format, no edit format...
so answer to 1): due to mpeg standards, you have a loss of pic quality. any miniDV would be ... better.- but it has to fullfill your tastes and standards, if it is ok to you.. just do it
ad 2) iMovie doesn't support the import via usb2.- when you're lucky, you get some Sony-made app with that device which allows to remotely control the corder via usb2 to force it to playback/stream the video to the Mac.. HardDrivecorders behave like some ordinary harddrive, easy to drag'n drop file from them to the Mac.. but a DVDcorder? even, when you hit manually "play"... how should your Mac know what to do with that stream of data coming via usb??
you guess it allready; I'm not convinced by DVDcorders
so, just to feed my personal curiosity:
I like all the other advantages which the Sony DVD camcorders offer.
    ... which one?
