I'm planning to buy a Sony HDR CX 160 camcorder.
Do you know if I can use iMovie '08 to import hd video? I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz intel core 2 Duo.
I'm interested to obtain clear/sharp video in low ligth conditions.
I have read about some problems with hd video, but I'm non so skilled about video formats.
    Many thanks

Open a Finder window and when the device is connected you will see it on the left pane. The easiest way to safely eject it is click the upside down triangle with a line under it that is next to the device. You will know it's safe to physically disconnect it when the device dissapears from the Finder window. It will look something like:

  • I have a sony HDR-SR5 camcorder and need to empty the iternal hard-drive. I have downloaded onto Picture Motion Browser and woud like to know if this will have stored all of the data on the hard-drive so can go back and edit later.

I have a Sony HDR-SR5 camcorder with a 40GB internal hard-drive. I need to clear the hard-drive as it's almost full. I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser, but am wondering whether PMB will have stored all the info from the camcorder hard-drive so that I can edit later.
Also, I would like to back-up on another hard-drive, but when I have tried this I can't view the footage stored on the hard-drive so am not sure whether I have backed up sufficiently and in what format? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful...

    >I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser
Isn't Picture Motion Browser available for Windows only?  If so, why are you posting in an Final Cut Express forum?  My apologies if I'm incorrect.

  • HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!! Sony HDR  SR-11 and connecting it to final cut express

I just got this new Sony HDR SR-11. I recorded a short clip and wanted to put it in my computer. I have Final Cut Express 4.0. So when I got the camera hooked up and went into the cameras files, not with final cut yet, tried to look for the files. Confused I went to a sony support site and it told me how to get to them , for a mac. I found the video file and copied it to my desktop. It was in that wierd black and grey shinney box format and said excu on the top , i think. I clicked it...Nothing. I opend it with quick time....Nothing. So I called up sony and after a long discussion the operator said that I needed to buy the MPEG-2 codec for quick time. which I did and...Nothing. So I called up again this new guy says i need Final Cut Pro to read HD files. Which Im pretty sure I dont. So I open final cut, i go to capture and...Nothing. PLEASE HELP ME. IM SOME WHAT NEW TO MACS AND I HOPE SO ONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

I have been trying for three days to the same thing.
I did get the video content off my camera via imovie 08 but the quality is very poor.
Haven't worked out how to improve the quality yet, I also tried importing the video
via ADVC 110 analog conversion device but that doesn't improve the quality.
I do have Final Cut Pro & MPEG-2 Codec and have been searching for the video in the camera's
hard drive but can not find it.
Can you tell me where Sony told you to find the video files so that I can try & import it to Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks

  • I'm trying to upload videos from my Sony HDR-CX550 camera and the files that contain the video (.cpi or .mts) are all grayed out on iMovie. I've been able to upload footage before onto Apple computers but now it doesn't seem to be working. Suggestions?

I've tried many different options including calling Apple Customer Support and talking to them for over an hour troubleshooting the issue. They couldn't do anything. I also called Sony who failed as well. Somebody please help me out. Thanks!

    Hello whatif95,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble importing video from your Sony HDR-CX550.  I found an article that provides some information specific to your camera and iMovie '09:
iMovie: Importing both HD and SD content with Sony HDR series cameras
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
For versions previous to iMovie ’11 v9.0.1, including iMovie ’08, ’09, and ’11 (v9.0 only):
To import the AVCHD content from the camera when MPEG-2 content has also been recorded, you must first import and erase the MPEG-2 content from the camera. You should then be able to import the AVCHD content.
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Sony HDR-HC7 camcorder and PB Ti with IMovie HD

Hello everyone. Im in the army and I will be deploying soon to Irak. Im looking for a good digital camcorder that will work with my PB. Im running Tiger with IMovie HD . I have been looking at different web sites and one that i like is the sony (nothing particular) HDR-HC7. Now the problem is that it is a high definition camcorder. I really dont know if my PB can handle the format or any software that it will require. Besides I dont know a lot about computers and cameras. The reason for the camera is that it has firewire connection( my PB has usb 1.1), image stabilization and good reviews for low light operations. I am a pilot and I'll doing a lot of flying at night. It also has a remote and good still pictures capabilities. Any advice or other suggestion on a good camera will be appreciated. Im I going to have issues with this particular camcorder? Anyone has this equipment setup? Can anyone suggest a good camcorder in the price range of 1000 dollars that will work with my PB? Please any advice and suggestions will be appreciated.

Good camcorder. But importing hi-def HDV will be -s-l-o-w- on your PowerBook, and especially on your 400 MHz G4 PowerMac.
You really do need at least a Dual G5 or a new Intel-powered machine for importing hi-def in real time, and lots of memory (1GB or more).
Hi-def also uses up much more space on your hard disc than standard-definition 13GB/hour video. So you'll need (a) more space, and (b) more patience!
When hi-def has been imported and edited the only reasonable means to create a hi-def DVD is to use Apple's (expensive) DVD Studio Pro software, or external software and hardware such as a Blu-Ray burner. (No Macs presently come with these ..and your existing Macs certainly don't have them.)
So you can shoot in hi-def with the camera ..but using that hi-def material may be problematic.
HDV isn't too good when you're shooting anything fast-moving (..because of the way the compression works..) so shooting from a pilot's seat in hi-def may give inferior results compared with shooting standard-def! ..It may look a bit sharper, but the detail won't really be there, and it may judder, compared with standard-def.
For fairly static shots, hi-def is much (about 4x) sharper.
So, the camera's good, but you may need to upgrade all the rest of your Mac equipment to match the camera's capability if you use its hi-def features. You can, of course, use the camera in standard-def ..but then that defeats the purpose of spending the money on hi-def, doesn't it..?
NOTE that all miniDV-tape camcorders have a FireWire connection, and so do your two Macs. USB is just for transferring photos, not video. Sony call the FireWire connection either 'DV' or 'i.Link', but it is normal FireWire, nevertheless. You'll also need a separate 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire/DV/i.Link cable ..Sony doesn't put one in the box with the camcorder ..and I don't think many of the other manufacturers do, either.

  • I have a Sony HDR-PJ260V camcorder and I use iMovie, is there a way to import my videos in 1080?

Okay, so I'm pretty new to this, and today when I tried to import my videos via iPhoto they got all grainy and stuff.
What should I do to import them on their normal quality?
    Thanks

  • SONY HDR XR150 - Camcorder is not recognized by iMOVIE

    Dear all:
_I own the Sony HDR XR150 camcorder and cannot get my MAC to recognize that my camcorder is connected._
    I have a Mac laptop Powerbook G4 and am running OS X version 10.4.11. I have iMOVIE 6.03 (267.2).
When I am in iMOVIE the camcorder is not recognized. :[
It states "No camcorder attached" even when I have small Firewire cable running from camcorder to larger firewire cable plugged into MAC. My footage on camcorder is on hard drive. I have no idea if the footage was taped in a certain format and I mention this because there are lots of formats written about in this forum - I just assumed everything was recorderd in HD. I simply hit record on camcorder to tape footage. When connected, I click on a button on camcorder for USB connect that uses the Internal Hard Drive (where my footage is). However, my camcorder is not recognized on iMOVIE.
I am worried that the problem is I do not have an Intel based Mac. The software that came with Sony camcorder called PMB (Picture Motion Browser - only works with Windows.)
This is what I dug up online.
    Tapeless Camcorder Support
iMovie '09 works with many tapeless camcorders that record to flash memory, a hard disk drive (HDD), or DVD media. These devices use a USB 2.0 cable and include camcorders using MPEG-2 (standard definition), MPEG-4, AVCHD, and H.264 formats. If you use the AVCHD format you will need a Mac with an Intel-based Core Duo processor or better.
Due to the wide range of media types, and the different ways manufacturers store video on these media types, not all tapeless camcorders are compatible with iMovie '09.

*CAN ANYONE CLUE ME IN AS TO HOW TO GET MY SONY CAMCORDER TO BE RECOGNIZED IN IMOVIE?*

My friend just wrote this to me as a possible solution...
It doesn't surprise me that AVCHD is only supported on Intel machines. Apple tends to stop updating older products/software in favor of their newer lines. To their credit, high compression HD codecs are processor intensive, and older hardware would have a hard time with it.
The camera may have some alternate options for video file type... Check the manual or help docs. Unfortunately, that could mean SD recording rather than HD.
I DON'T KNOW IF MY FRIEND'S INFORMATION MIGHT HELP SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME EVEN BETTER IDEAS AS A SUGGESTION. AVCHD is a high-def video format that allows HD camcorders and some digital cameras to record video at resolutions up to 1920 x 1080. SOUNDS LIKE MY FRIEND IS SAYING IF I DON'T RECORD IN HD ON MY SONY CAMCORDER MAYBE MY IMOVIE WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH IT. BUT MY IMOVIE DOES NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE MY CAMCORDER... SO I DON;T THINK HIS SUGGESTION WILL WORK...
    SUGGESTIONS?

  • Is a Sony HDR SR7 compatible with FCP HD 4.5  ???

Ok I have been trying to get the video to work on my computer for way too long now. I have a Sony HDR SR7 Camera and I am running on the Leopard 10.5.2 OS and have FCP HD 4.5. I copied over the AVCHD folder into my external hard drive and then got Voltaic to convert the files into .mov files. Now when I try to set up the correct sequence in FCP I can't get it to work right. I have tried many different sequence settings and I get one that works for the first clip, but then every other clip i try to put on the timeline is squished and not at the right screen width.
    Please can somebody help me?

You have two strikes against you.
    1. FCP 4.5 is not supported under leopard (aka OSX 10.5)
    2. FCP 4.5 does not support HD video other than DVCProHD - which your camera does not record.
The simple solution is to upgrade to FCS2 (aka Final Cut Studio 6.0.3)

  • SONY HDR UX3E - dvd camcorder with usb connection

does anyone know how to get video out of those new DVD video cameras ?
First, do those new, mini 8cm dvds go into a PowerBook G4 SuperDrive slot?
This camera has a usb cord, so i'm plugging that into PowerBook G4 usb port. The volume shows up on my desktop, but clicking on it just brings up various files that I can't see thumbnails of or open with imovie, dvd, or quicktime.
my previous camcorder used a firewire connectionl. Does anyone have experience with the new SONY HDR UX3E camera and a mac? it is High defintion.
is there a way to hook camera up with Firewire? my manual doesn't mention it. does anyone have this camera, and use it with a powerBookG4??
    ay help would be appreciated

WARNING!!!! Never pop in any thing other than a standard size CD/DVD in your slot-loading Macs!
You will damage your optical drive severely. You can only put those things in a tray-loading optical drive.
Second, the only connection supported by Macs are FireWire connections for digital video cameras. (Unless something has changed recently, which I don't believe since I am a video editor--not professional--myself in my job).
The best cameras for Macs are the DV cameras. If you want HD, you can record to mini-DV. The hard drive cameras work too, but it takes multiple steps before you can start editing your video.
I'm not sure how to extract the video from your DVDs since they are encoded, but I will look for you. (Unless someone answers before I do).
Check your camera to see if it does have a FireWire connection. Some cameras have both, though Sony tends to use USB 2.0. Theirs would be called "iLink" for the FireWire port.

**your DVDs have your videos encoded in MPEG-2 format so you need an application that will convert that into .DV or .MOV formats so that you can edit in iMovie or Final Cut. (Or QuickTime). There are many third-party apps for Mac OS X that can do that for you.

  • Using my Sony HDR-PJ50V

In October of this year,I recorded 16, 1.5 hour lectures at a remote location using the Sony HDR-PJ50V camcorder and transfering to an external hard drive every night, for back-up. Using Sony's HQ HD 60i setting, I exported each one to QT and burned to DVD with Toast 8. The DVDs play in the letter box mode which is what I want. I don't remember , however, selecting letter box.
Also, when I use Easy Setup, I can select any of the i60 AVCHD or HDV options. My videos still work ok.
I also send the QT file to Toast 8 for Divx burn to DVD and use Divx payer to play in full HD.
Even though I have been very successful at producing videos, there is a lot that I do not know.
    David

That's great to hear, Mr. Fahnestock, and I'm sure the recipients of the DVDs are happy to have a chance to attend the lectures, if not in person, at least via your DVDs.

Anyone using this camera with Imovie 11.
I wonder because I´m about to buy a new camera, because the one I have (Canon Legria HFR 106) doesn´t work properly with Imovie even though it is posted as supported camera on Apple´s website.
I need someone to confirm that they are using Sony / HDR-CX550V (PAL) and thatthey don´t have any issues using it with Imovie. I would hate to spend a lot of money (again

  • Mac + FCS 2 + SONY HDR Z1 for broadcast quality?

Can I get the broadcast quality US TV channels (PBS, Discovery, Nat Geo...) are asking for if I shoot a documentary with a SONY HDR Z1, edit and the post production in FCS 2 ? I also need to make a Blu Ray DVD, is it OK?
    Thanks.

    hey there paoloj,
it can depend on the context-- POV & Independent Lens are shows on PBS that may consider your doc as they are for indies shooting intimate, "closer look" stories generally using non-intrusive means. the same may apply for a similarly styled show on Discovery. it would be best to check out the requirements for submission to POV & Independent Lens or anything you're interested in. several years ago(pre-DV) there was a doc on PBS shot on Hi-8, the standard then was Beta SP--i believe it was "Reflections On A Spring Roll".
    good luck.
