Sony/NEC Optiarc AD-7170A Problems

I added a 2nd Sony/NEC Optiarc AD-7170A to my Mac Pro Purchased through Newegg. The new Optiarc drive will play DVDs but will not burn. It says it is unsupported. It also has another firmware version. Both drives are on CSL.
How do you update the drives firmware? Is there another setting that needs to be adjusted?

Sorry to hear you are having problems. It does sound as if the drive may be bad. I would try a few things first if you haven't already done so. Have you tried using Patchburn? It is a free program widely used in the Mac world to allow newer drives to work with older versions of the operating system. Although 10.4.10 would work with your Sony, 10.3.9 won't. The drive is too new for the OS. It's easy to download and install and I've never heard of it causing problems. Have you also tried different brands of media?
Both these things can make a difference. But if the drive really is bad, you really don't need to buy an Apple drive, in fact, there are many reasons not to. My MacPro came with a Sony Optiarc that was defective - it's not just retail or oem drives that can go bad. Apple almost never updates their firmware, and from all your work you should now realize how important good firmware is. I have 2 non-Apple drive in my MacPro (a Pioneer and an LG) and two in my G4 (a Pioneer and an LG) and all work just fine. You just happened to get a defective drive. It has nothing to do with EFI, or having the drive supplied by Apple. Please consider a Pioneer 112. It is a much more reliable drive than the Sony, and is being used in the latest MacPro's. If you get an "Apple" drive it will simply be another Sony or the Pioneer for twice the money you could get it online. It would have Apple firmware, which is never as good as the original drive makers firmware. A Pioneer you buy online will do everything an Apple supplied drive does, only better, because of Pioneer's superior firmware.
Good luck, don't let this get you down it's fixable without spending $80 more. I always tell myself in situations like this (and I've been there often) that I spent my money not on a bad drive but on all that I learned in putting it right. It helps a little

  • Replacing Sony Nec Optiarc AD-7170A

    Hi,
It seems the drive doesn´t work because when I load a CD or DVD, the drive never stops seeking and I must reset. I don´t know if I can buy any DVD/CD-ROM drive or Leopard can only work with some manufacturers. I wonder if it´s the same as graphic cards. PC nvidia cards don´t work in MAC or viceversa.
I would be very pleased if someone could recommend me a good drive. When I used to work with PC, I loved Pioneer drivers but I don´t know if I can used it with MAC.

Help me please with recognition of this model DVD-RW ROM in Windows Vista SP1, SP2.
Windows does not detect it, apparently because of the controller...
Optical drive have the SATA interface.
    I connect it to the:

I don't think you will find any help on Apple logicboard even if it is an off shoot of basic Intel server board.
The optical drive ports are now used, in 2009 Mac Pro.
What you can do is run OS X and data off those ports, and use some of your 4 SATA sleds for Windows etc.
I've build an array for OS X using both ODD ports and regular SATA, mix and match, move drives around, the array stays intact, and full I/O.
Eventually I "built" an Intel board with Core i7 and other parts, and run OS X or Windows on Mac Pro and Windows 7 on PC, and a KVM - so I can switch between computers and operating systems with a switch, and not have to deal with Boot Camp or other issues.

Panoramic photos. I have a Sony Cybershot camera. My problem is that I can't view my panoramic photos properly with iPhoto.  Sony says to contact Mac support. Has anyone any info on this prob, please?

Not sure what you want - you shoot the photo by doing a sweep and the camera makes a static JPEG that is long (panaromic) and you import it - on the camera and in iPhoto is is a panaromic photo

  • Sony Bravia "There was a problem signing you in to...

    Hi,
I have a new Sony Bravia TV (55": KDL55W800A) and just bought the Skype camera so I could use Skype (CMU-BR200).
When I try sign in I get the message  "There was a problem signing you in to Skype. Please try again later." If I enter incorrect details it gives a standard "wrong username/password" so it knows these credentials are right.
It is the same with other skype accounts. I have done the usual steps of restarting the router, veriying the account works on other devices, checked the internet and other apps on the tv etc. I am at a loss.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

I agree with Laith, but I did the factory reset this morning (before reading the forum), and this also did the trick.  Far from ideal, and pretty irritating that this should be necessary... but for now, it has worked.  We'll see if I'm still able to logon later (especially as I've now logged into my account from this laptop to post a comment on the forum!).  Will update either way.

if this works good to go or we can try these steps
Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run.
In the Open box, type "msiexec /unreg" and then press Enter. THAN

  • The other optiarc bc 5500s problem

ok i see that the people with player problems fixed their issue but many others have this issue
the drive works fine except for bd rom playback when you put a bd disk in it will go ba-dump 3 to 5 times and then give up doesnot matter what program you run i tried them all tried filters trick no good
anybody found a fix yet or should i buy a new drive
and lets try to keep on topic please

Not sure what version of Windows you are running, but here's what I've found out from HP support on my dv7 with a Optiarc BC-5500S blu-ray drive on my Windows 7 x64 laptop.
I had bought "ID4 Independence Day" on blu-ray so I could compare the disc to a DVD of the same movie since I'd never seen a blu-ray movie before. When I loaded the blu-ray movie I got a error saying that I needed a firmware update for the drive to watch the movie. I then downloaded a trial of Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 and the movie played fine, so I knew it wasn't a firmware problem with the drive. I then contacted HP support and they had me install SP48296.exe which is a update to the DVD player with support for blu-ray. Still had the firmware error. They then had me install SP47676.exe which says it's a update for MediaSmart MVP. After installing this one it did the trick! Don't know what it updated that corrected the problem with blu-ray, but it did the job.
Both these updates are available on the HP.com website under Support & Drivers. I found them by going to the downloads for my dv7t cto 2000 and selecting Windows 7 x64 for my OS. Then I found both under the Multimedia expandable section. Both these installs are actually good for all versions of Windows 7 both 64 and 32 bit versions.
Hope this helps you all! Oh, and by the way... Blu-ray is noticeably better than regular DVD!

  • OPTIARC AD-7170A Not enough power to burn.

My DVD burner in my Mac Pro reads discs fine, but burning always fails. I get the message there is not enough power. I'm wondering if having more RAM will help this probelm? I only have 4gb. I'm still on 10.5.8 because i fear upgrading my system when everything is working so well with my applications (except burning obviously). Is it simply time to buy a new burner, if so my choices are limited, right?

    Hi-
Samsung is a popular drive, though I have no personal experience. I use the Pioneer DVR-116, and it is an excellent drive.
OWC is a Mac specialist, and only sells that which they deem acceptable for Macs.
I think you would be safe with the Samsung.
An optical drive isn't that hard to install.
    Instructions are Here.
You must, however, remove the plate that is on the tray of the optical drive, or it won't clear the slot in the tower.
That is one note that is not in the instructions.
As for the scanner, for 800 slides, a dedicated film scanner may not be the best choice.
Current flatbed scanners offer some nice features, and many are able to make good scans of slides and negatives.
Current Nikon slide scanners can run a couple thousand dollars, so one would want to have good use for a dedicated scanner.
A scan service may also be a more economical approach.

  • SONY answers for mini display problems

I have successfully hooked up my SONY KD-34XBR960 via the HDMI input to work with my new Mac mini. Most of the explanations in the forum about how to do this were incomplete, and lacking a final (albeit obvious) step. I followed the directions listed here: http://tenant.com/mini.php
We used a DVI to HDMI conversion cable and DisplayConfigX. After setting the new display parameters with DisplayConfigX, you still need to change to that display setting in the OS. Then you'll get a picture. You can play with settings a bit and will probably have to adjust for overscan, but it works very well, and the picture is amazing. Text is very readable, and the digital video playback is as good as my high end dvd player. I am glad we have this forum to talk about solutions to tech problems, Apple's tech support people couldn't have been less helpful or more clueless.

The resolution of my Sony with the Mac is 1192x680 which is 720p according to Michael and Jim at http://tenant.com/mini.php.
I am very happy with the Sony Wega 60XS955. The image quality is pretty good on analog and excellent on digital/HD. The mac mini looks absolutely fantastic on it as well. It's perfect!
The DisplayConfigX application is easy to use. You have to purchase a serial number to use the advance DisplayConfigX features. It is required when configuring the resolution for the XS955. It costs $12 to register it and the serial number is emailed immediately.
Setting it up can be a little awkward. You have to install a VNC server on the mini and use another pc or mac to remotely connect to it. The VNC is very simple to use and so is connecting to it. Then you configure the resolution, install it, and then set it. That's really all.
Yes. I had to reboot a couple of times to get it up and running. Once your done, that's it.
If you need any help, you can email me @ [email protected] or vist the http://tenant.com/mini.php. If it wasn't for Michael and Jim from that website, this would not be working.
FYI... I did test the mini on a top of the line Samsung and it looked incredible. But I chose the Sony because I watch more TV than I do surfing the internet. It was more important to me to have a better television image than a computer image.
    Good luck!
    David

  • Sony Xperia Z1 push notifications problems

I've had my Xperia for about 2 months now and as of about 3 days ago my push notifications stopped coming through when I'm using mobile data. When I reconnect to my home wifi they all come through, but when I am out I have to go into apps (such as facebook, messenger, snapchat, gmail) to be able to see that I have notifications.
Additionally, I was going to try to uninstall and reinstall the apps but now the Play Store will not let me in. It tells me that I have to enable background data (which I do have enabled) and then when I click on the enable button that it pops up with it opens sync options.
Does anyone have a way to fix either of these problems? The push notifications is my biggest annoyance.
    Thanks for your help!

Then you likely have slightly more recent software and this menu has been changed to "Xperia Connectivity" in which case the Internet Settings option will be found under the "More" option in settings.

  • Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 illumination problem

One of the four exterior LED illumination sets appears to have failed. I've used plenty of Sony Ericsson phones, and this is the first to ever have a problem (probably because it was the only one manufactured by HTC).
Any other X1 owners on agoraquest that have had a similar problem?

  • Sony Xperia L (C2105) charging problem

I will tell the whole history just in case, it might be relevant. It started with battery problems, it was charging at a very slow rate (4-5 hours)  and it was lasting 1 hour top. The camera was the cuplrit, it wasn't working at all and by disabling the camera app the phone worked fine for a week. Suddenly stopped charging now. When  the phone is on it doesn't recognize the charger not even the computer, no bottom led. The computer doesn't recognize the phone either. When the phone is off, if i connect the charger, then the bottom led turns red for a second, SONY logo appears, battery appears for another seconds and reboots... infinitely.I thought that the USB connector was the problem but i can connect it to my laptop in fastboot mode and flashmode, the phone is recognized in both modes, i even "repaired" the phone with Sony PC Companion and i'm having the same problems like before: no camera and no charging. I don't think it is a firmware problem, i've re-flashed the stock firmware from XPERIA Firmware and no success. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

thanks for replying so fast but i was hoping for some ideas, i have no intention to contact Sony. The phone is 2 years old out of warranty, if i can't repair it on my own then i will go buy another one. It's not worth the effort to contact some specialized departement to tell me that they can repair it for 100€ when i can buy a better new one for 150€. I think that i've asked for help in the wrong place

  • Any Sony HX9V dig camera compatability problems with imac?

Hi Anyone aware of compatability problems between the new Sony HX9V dig camera and my Mac before I buy
    Cheers Vernon

    I don't see any problems.
    1. Images
When you connect the camera to your Mac you can copy the JPG images from one of the appearing  camera folders to your hard drive.
    2. Movies
There is a (little!) problem with best quality movies US format 1080/60p / EU format 1080/50p. These can't be imported directly. (I'm using FCP X.)
But you can use the free Media Converter (http://media-converter.sourceforge.net)* with the free Re-wrap AVCHD plugin (same website) to convert the available MTS files into QuickTime MOV files (1080/60p) which can be imported into FCP X. (Before I import my movies I trim them using QT X.)
(Note: I assume in iMovie you can only use them as 1080/30p (losing every other frame). I'm not 100% sure - I made a test some months ago.)
*) You can also use ClipWrap ($50) but I can't see a difference.

  • Sony Experia Neo V WIFI Problem

    Hi,
I purchased my sony ericsson neo v in the singapore under a postpaid plan last nov. 2012. Now I am here in the philippines and a few days or a week ago I have problems connecting via wifi. The wife application always turns off everytime I turn it back on. I just upgraded to android 4.0 today and still got the same problem. Is it a hardware problem? Is this still under warranty and if so, where is the nearest sony service center?
Hope to receive feedback as soon as possible. Thanks!

I suggest that you check if this problem could be related to some software glitch by reinstalling the phone software using SUS.
    http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/
If the same problem remains after software reinstall I suggest that you contact your local support team to have your phone examined at an repair center.
