SOS tones at start up on 2007 IMAC

Hoping someone can be of help. I purchased an IMAC for my children about 2 years ago. its been great. last night my wife shut it down - when I went to turn it on - it would not turn on. i immediately heard an SOS tone (3 short 3 long 3 short) each time i turned it on. The screen is black and i cannot access anything. i have looked at all of the suggestions in MAc Support and i cannot find anything that deals with this. is there anyone who can help a novice like me figure this out.
Many Thanks
Ned

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Below is a sumary on startup tones on Macintosh computers.
iMac (Mid 2007) and later model iMac computers, unlike other Macintosh computers, do not use the power LED to indicate there is an issue. iMac (Mid 2007) and later model iMac computers use tones instead.
Products Affected
iMac (20-inch, Mid 2007), iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), iMac (24-inch, Early 2008), iMac (20-inch, Early 2008)
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
Tone(s)
Description

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off. Please help!

This sounds like a hard drive issue. First I would try to boot to safe mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
If that works do a backup ASAP with Time Machine: Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support or copy your important files to an external drive if they are not already backed up. If that does not work, Boot to recovery:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
The next step would be verifying and if needed repairing the hard drive using Disk Utility.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
If it successfully repairs, do a restart and see if it boots as normal. If it cannot be repaired, it means that the hard drive has failed/is failing. If you do not have the data backed up you could try getting the data using target disk mode: OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode ,booting from an external drive that has OS X installed on it: OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support, or 3rd party data recovery service.
After data is backed up or recovered, you would need to do an erase and install of OS X: OS X: How to erase and install - Apple Support
If it fails to erase, then the hard drive needs to be replaced.

My 2007 iMac 24" attacked' while on Youtube and cannot start up. I need first aid to get it going again...
True, it's retired as working machine but serves as family entertainment center.

At this point you have 2 choices.
Erase the disk entirely and reinstall (you will lose everything that is not backed up)
Take it to an Apple Store (you will probably lose everything that is not backed up)
I believe this is a hardware (HDD) issue and would expect a Store trip to be the best approach, sorry.
    BUT
Did you try a safe mode start?

  • 2007 imac won't start

Hi, I have a 2007 iMac, yesterday it froze while backing up so I ended up unplugging and left it overnight. Now it won't turn on at all. I've tried unplugging from the power and the computer, holding the power button for 5, reconnecting but still nothing

Time to take the computer to your local Apple Store or an AASP.

  • Connecting mid-2007 iMac to LG TV via mini dvi to HDMI

I am trying to connect my mid-2007 iMac to my 42" LG HDTV to no avail. I am running iOS 10.6 Snow Leopard. I bought the mini dvi to HDMI adapter and plugged the iMac into the TV. I went to the display tab in the system settings and see that the iMac recognizes the tv. I went to the arrangements section and it recognizes the tv. When I click on gather windows it even calls it the LG TV. However, there is nothing showing on my TV. It says no input detected. When I move my mouse to the right side of the screen it disappears like it is going to a second monitor.
    Any thoughts?

Hey Corinthone, did you ever figure it out? I have a mid2007 iMac running snow leopard & a 120hz LGTV 42". I was having the same issues as you(yes Frankie, I made sure I was selecting the correct hdmi input). Now with the same setup, my LG recognizes the HDMI input from my iMac. It says connecting but then 'no signal' on the screen. The hdmi2 is still showing a connection in 'inputs' just no picture on TV. I started changed the setting via my mac but still nada. The lg is 120hz. Does that have anything to do with it?  Thanks

  • I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive.

I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive. The internal drive is completely dead, it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility.  I'm running 10.8.2 from the external drive.  When I start Boot Camp Assistant, at the Introduction page, when I press the continue button nothing happens.  Do I have to have internal drive to run Boot Camp Assistant?  Can anyone provide me with the steps to dual boot, with his setup?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi maczimillon,
Only follow these steps, it works for my:
Open "System Information" and note your "Boot ROM Version" (some like MBP51.007E.B06)
Navigate to "Utilities" in Finder and open the package contents of -BootCampAssistant.app- with right click. Duplicate the "Info.plist" file to the Desktop e.g. and open that with Text Editor.
You must locate the keys "DARequiredROMVersions"and "USBBootSupportedModels"
Add new strings with the information of your machine under booth keys (step 1), always respect the format, such as: <string>MBP51.007E.B06</string> for the frist key and <string>MBP51</string> for the second key.
Save changes and replace the original plist file (it may ask you to enter admin pass)
If you proceeded correctly you will see the checkbox "Create a Windows 7 USB install disk" enabled in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then you can follow the usual Boot Camp installation using your WIN8 DVD iso image . The assistant program will proceed resizing your disk partition and installing necessary drivers for your iMac.
I strongly recomends you to use thirld party's bootloaders like rEFInd (rEFIt) because of the Apple SMC versions of some old machines should not be able to boot properly from external devices like USB drives.

  • Acquired a 2007 Imac 5,1 - need help

I have been given a 2007 Imac after my old work office closed down. I am a Newbie to macs so am a bit lost.
    Its an Imac 5,1
    Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    2.16GHz
    Memory 1GB
    Operating OS X 10.4.11
I dont think it runs as fast as it should. Probably has alot of old files on it as it was the artists computer.
I'd like to make it work as well as possible and get all the latest software etc.
Please can someone kindly advise where I should start? Bear in mind i'm a novice!!
It has photoshop and AI which I'd like to keep if possible.

Do I have to do anything to wipe it or will that happen when I install the new OS?
I have the disks for photoshop and AI so I can just put these back on with the new OS right?
How do I get more RAM? I am a bit of a novice regarding this - it says it has 1GB memory on the "about this computer" menu, but then says it has 198GB free disk space in another menu??
    Thanks
You can upgrade to Lion as long as the system meets the system requirements which are:
Mac OS X Lion System Requirements
In order to install Mac OS X 10.7 you will need:
Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended)
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with the Mac App Store installed (10.6.8 recommended)
At least 4GB of additional disk space to accommodate the download, but more is obviously recommended
Note that it says 10.6.6 (SL) as a requirement so if you want to get to Lion then yes you must first upgrade to SL. Also note that old PPC (Power PC) based applications will not run on Lion. They must be replaced or upgraded first. The types of apps that will run are Intel & Universal. You can easily tell what your applications are by running System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) or click Spotlight (the little magnifying glass in the upper right) and type System Profiler. Once in SP then click Applications on the left and look at the Kind column, it will list all the apps and state Intel, Universal or PPC.
Upgrading RAM is incredibly easy, to find the correct RAM and how much can be installed in your iMac contact www.macsales.com (OWC) or Crucial. I prefer OWC because they specialize in Macs, have terrific service including how-to videos on how to install the RAM and excellent prices. Crucial is great too however if I gave OWC an A+ I could only rank Crucial as an A, still excellent just not quite as excellent.

  • Have a 2007 imac running mavericks and want to change ownership

I was given a mid 2007 imac.  It is running OS X 10.9.1.  I want to change the ownership to my apple account for upgrades and app purchases.  What do I need to do to make this imac mine?  This is also my first mac and I am looking to change from pc to mac.  I know i will lose all the programs on the imac but I can purchase any I need later.  I do not have any install discs with the machine, can I make an OS X install disk from the system on the machine now?

The iMac you have came w/system DVDs.  See KB Article:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
You will need to get them from the person that gave you the iMac.  If that is not possible you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

Any idea's what this means and what would be causing ?
    Thanks for any help.

You apparently have some possibly incompatible HP software installed. Note the filename: com.hp.help.tocgenerator. I suggest you uninstall any HP software you now have installed on the computer after which you will need to restart. What would be more helpful: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller

  • 2007 iMac Crash.

My 2007 iMac running SL froze up opening a website and slowly started shutting down windows until all that was left was a gray screen with the spinning startup dial showing.  I tried a hard reset but now all I have is a white screen with the Apple, the startup spinner and for a short term a progress bar.  Any ideas on how to fix?

Boot with the SL install disc, launch Disk Utility, and repair the HD. Once you've ascertained there aren't any HD errors, reinstall the OS, launch Software Update, and get up to the latex 10.6.8. Your .4 version is woefully outdated. Finally, launch Disk Utility, repair the permissions, and restart.

  • Would a 2007 iMac go through 3 hard drives in 3 years?

    My computer's specs:
    2007 iMac
    OSX 10.6.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB ram
My computer ran like a dream for 2 years. Three years ago I started getting the error that the startup disk did not have enough space to run applications, blah blah blah, so after doing some research I replaced the hard drive and the problem was solved. A year later it happened again, so even though I thought that was wierd, I replaced the hard drive again. It's happening again about a year and a half later. I feel like there has to be something else going on besides the hard drive. Also, Time Machine isn't working - it keeps giving me an error that the backup disk cannot be found.
I know computers don't last forever-- is it just time to move on a get a new computer? Or am I missing the real problem and have just replaced my hard drive twice unnecessarily?

You probably did not prep the drives correctly. Do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
To fix the Time Machine problem:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences and select the drive as the Time Machine backup drive. Click on the Options button to configure any exclusions you may want. Close Time Machine preferences after the backup starts.

  • 2007 iMac Gray Screen After Boot - Can't do anything

    Hello,
I have a 2007 iMac. When I turn it on, I hear the boot chime and see the light gray screen, and then it goes to a darker gray screen. It won't get past the dark gray screen, and the screen doesn't show any icons or anything. It's just a solid dark gray. I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, starting in safe mode, etc., and nothing seems to be making a difference.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in advanced!

I've tried all of those things. I don't believe the peripherals are causing the problem. I forgot to mention that I have it connected to a TV via VGA adapter. The iMac's monitor doesn't work.
