Sound problems, ALSA can't find sound card at boot

Sometimes, my sound randomly drops out, and I can't get it back until I reboot. Even when I reboot, 1/20 times, it will not be back.
When I watch stuff on youtube, sometimes the sound just drops out. Nothing gets muted. My audio player can't produce sound.
If I do
lsmod | grep snd
I'll see the some output.
When I reboot and try to play music from Quodlibet, I'll get an error like this:
Output Error
GStreamer output pipeline could not be initialized. The pipeline might be invalid, or the device may be in use. Check the player preferences.
"lsmod | grep snd" will have NO output and when I try to start alsamixer:
[xz@gestalt ~]$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
I can't figure out what's going on, and googling has just led me to various not-completely-related posts on this board... what could be the problem?
EDIT: A few more things to note--
I have alsa in my daemons list in rc.conf
I'm part of the "audio" groups.
soundcore is not blacklisted

Audio devices aren't even mentioned. I noticed when I tried to boot up that I get an error like "sound card not detected." Why would arch suddenly not be able to find a soundcard? It looks like it almost has nothing to do with my ALSA configuration, and has more to do with my sound card not being found at all in the first place....

Ok, problem fixed, if not solved. A very helpful Apple tech walked me through opening terminal and entering a sudo command line that established my user name as the owner with owner access. Like magic, everything reverted back to original state of affairs.
Reviewing the console log of the error, it started when I tried to wake up the iMac from sleep with network access from another Mac, which should not have been a problem. This is in the category of "Who knows?" If there is a repeat, I'll come back here and post it.

  • Where can I find airport card or airport extreme card

I want to make my g4 wireless where can I find these cards to do so? Any recommendations to purchase them? Thanks in advance

Instead of using either of the AirPort cards, you may want to consider using a USB wireless adapter instead. The advantage of this would be that thise adapters support the newer 802.11n networks. FWIW, I use one with my G4 Quicksilver Power Mac and it works great. There are a number of vendors out there that sell these. One example would be Other World Computing (OWC).

  • Where can i find sound driver for Satellite 2100CDS?

I reformatted the hard drive on my Satellite 2100CDS and I need the sound driver to get the sound working.
    Where can i find this?

    I can confirm that.
As far as I know the PCI communication device could be audio and modem device.
But it could be also a installed ISDN or LAN card. But I think teh LAN driver was installed already and the ISDN card is not placed in the notebook.
Simply download the modem driver and try to install it.

  • Old Problem/New Problem: Lightroom can't find file, then finds, but won't edit it.

    (Lightroom 2; Macintosh G5; OS X (10.4.11))
First, the old problem which, though unresolved, is here mostly for background:
    A little over a month ago, I posted a question (at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/480423?tstart=0 ).
The short version of that problem is that certain previously accessible images were not able to be opened in Lighroom. The preview image appeared in the main window accompanied by this message across the top of it:
"The file named "[name of image/file]" is offline or missing."
When I right clicked on the image and selected "Show in finder" I got this message:
"The photo '[name of file]' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Below which was shown the original path to the file. In the middle of that path, one or more folders appeared with colons in their names in place of the slashes originally part of the names (some folders have dates in their names). Following the path via the Finder, the file was exactly where it was supposed to be, although, of course, slashes appeared instead of the colons that were in the Lightroom summary of the original path, but Lightroom couldn't find them.
I was convinced that Lightroom was renaming the folders (but only in its interface; the original folders had correct names in the finder -- which is the only way they could have been named, since colons are illegal characters and won't be accepted as part of a file name). But I see now that there is some weird thing going on in the Finder itself. Even though I see the correct name on a folder when I search for it, or navigate through the hierarchy, if I click on the file at the end of that hierarchy (the file that Lightroom said it couldn't find) and ask for file info (via Command - I, or other method), the path to that file shows colons where slashes should be, but only in the names of the folders that were so named in Lightroom. All other folders with slashes in their names are listed correctly. So it's a Finder problem. Though this is still a mystery, I have been able to work around the problem. But how is this happening? (Note that I will be reformulating the question and posting it on the Apple discussion groups soon; I don't expect this forum to deal with Apple system issues. Just thought that others here may have had the same problem.)
Now, the new problem, possibly related to the old one:
In the same collection where I noted the previous problem, I selected an image that I wanted to print. The preview came up with this message:
"The file could not be found."
But when I right click on the image and select "Show in finder" it opens the correct Finder window with the file in question highlighted. The file, a TIFF, opens normally in Preview or Photoshop.
So why does Lightroom think it's not there? (even though it can show me exactly where it is)
I have edited this photo in Lightroom before. I have printed it from Lightroom before (as shown in the Lightroom history). But today it can't be edited, won't print and "could not be found"!!!
I know I can print from Photoshop, or re-import this photo into Lightroom (along with any others that Lightroom "can't find"), though both would require time and re-editing the original. I would rather understand (if that's possible) why this is happening in the first place, so hopefully I can avoid such wackiness in the future.
I realize that may have to burn some sage and hire a Shaman, but any ideas that won't smoke up the house or scare the cats would be most welcome.
    Thanks for reading.
    Leonard B.

If you have an old goat around that's not doing so well, consider the sacrifice.
The one thing that occurs to me besides the Gremlin, is the use of colons or slashes or some other character that the OS or LR doesn't like in some file name or other.  I think you'd have to change same in Finder, then show LR where the images are.

  • ADS problem: How can I find out the SP of ADS?!

    Hi,
when i try to run the Dynamic Form tutorial i get the following exception:
    java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out
The execution of "Test" under http://<host>:<port>/AdobeDocumentServices/Config
    was successfull.
I have SAP Developer Studio SP 11, J2EE SP11,  but I am not sure what ADS SP I have.
    So my question:
Is it important that the ADS has the same SP than the J2EE and the Developer Studio?
And how can I find out what ADS version I have currently installed?
    Kind regards,
    Tobi

    Hi Tobias,
This can be due to lot of reasons.
Please have a look at the following SAP Notes:
826419 Setting socket timeout for WS Clients in SP10 and SP11
849851 Importing a Web Dynpro patch for Support Package 12
867502 Read Timeout using AdobeDocumentService in Web Dynpro
Also there are few more notes, that you should check.
To check the version of all the components in your J2EE Engine, goto
    http://<server>:<port>/sap/monitoring/ComponentInfo
You can see the version of Software Components.
For ADS check ADS_SAP and ADS_SAPOFF components version. It will be like 1.00 SPXX.
Let me know if you still got this problem.

  • How can I find Smart Card frequency ?

I have been developing an ATR parser class to parse ATR, calculate Bauds rate and and something like that, I have two question to ask:
    - first is that I don't know where can I find frequency value to calculate Bauds Rare?
    - second is that are we able to change any card bauds rate?

    Sebastien,
The ATR specifies the "FI" and "DI" parameters which are mapped to respectively the supported clock rate conversion factor F (and maximum frequency fs) and the bitrate adjustment factor D, all of which are used to calculate the ETU and bitrate. Refer to ISO/IEC 7816-3 Section 8, specifically Table 7 and 8.
The clock frequency used by the reader must be supported by the card for a given protocol (T=0, T=1, etc).
    EDIT:
This ties in with what you said about PPS exchange (a.k.a. protocol negotiation a.k.a. PTS request):
If the ATR indicates that protocol negotiation is allowed, the reader can send a PTS request to the card containing the reader's preferred choice of the FI and DI parameters for a transmission mode; the card's response will indicate whether those parameters can be used for subsequent communication. Alternatively, the reader can use the first protocol given in the ATR and default values for FI and DI.
This is just an overview - there are many more details regarding protocol negotiation; refer to ISO/IEC 7816 Sections 6.2.4, 6.3 and 9.
Note that protocol negotiation (PTS request) may take place at one time only: after the reader has received the ATR but before it sends any other traffic. Protocol negotiation does not follow the usual command-response APDU exchange format. For this reason the reader (or its driver) handles the negotiation transparently.
    I hope that clarifies things...

  • Install of latest Firefox upgrade won't complete, now having multiple problems and can't find how to revert back to previous mode.

I got a prompt to upgrade, but the install mechanism just keeps looping, says connecting but nothing ever happens. Daily I get warnings to install, and each effort ends as above. Now some of the prompt boxes (such as "are you sure you want to delete...") appear in subdued/basic mode. I was going to simply revert back to the previous edition that worked, but can't find how to do that.

I am having an issue with the Software Update also. The window says, "It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible"....It won't let me see the information of this update. I click on it as it highlights but nothing happens. So when I do click next it starts to update but updates all day long. It is not right. I thought maybe a virus? Could somebody tell me what to do? It is constantly happening everyday. thank You!!

  • Itunes can't find network drive on boot, but fine after

I have a MacMini server for my house providing light control, emal, websites and other fun stuff.   As it is on 24x7 it made sense to put the iTunes library here as well and have my primary workstation simply connect to it.  As the MacMini is in a closet I really need the primary workstation as the point of connection for all iPads and iPhones.
This seemed simple enough in theory but it's got a quirk in it somewhere.
On startup, the primary workstation always comes up with an error that it can't find the iTunes library.   But when I click the option button to choose the library, it opens to the proper place - the directory locatino on the MacMini.
After I have done this, iTunes works just as expected.   I can even close iTunes on the workstation and open it again - poof, there it is as expected and no problem.   If I shut down the workstation and start it up again then once again I get this same error from iTunes regarding it being unable to find the library.
I wrote an apple script in an effort to establish connection to the network drive (i.e., the MacMini) and it works just fine - it even has a delay to make sure the connection is established (I can disable this but it makes no difference).  The problem is that it seems to run AFTER the iTunes Helper has tried and fialed.
Under my Login Items, the iTuens Helper is always the First application listed.  I can't seem to reorder them at all.  I can delete the iTunes Helper, but then of coruse iTunes doesn't launch.   Once I set the preferences again to start iTunes at Startup, it reasserts itself to be first in line.
I am using a Mac Airport Extreme (had the original and now have the 802.11ac) as the central network controller - but this issue was there before.  Although there is a Netgear Gigbabit router in the house too, the workstation and the MacMini are both on diret lines to the Airport Extreme and are not using wireless.
The sharing of the media files works just fine, and from the Apple TVs in the house I can select and play either from the MacMini or the workstation as long as the workstation is on.   Of course the media is all coming from the MacMini drive as the original source, but there are no latency issues perceptable.
It's only the initial startup boot of the workstation that seems to trigger this error.
I have tried removing the network connection script, and simply reidetifying the library location using the option key when starting iTunes - but the behavior remains.
Searching for how others have recommended doing this, most articles don't have the login script but others do - but none of them have any sort of a bi-line warning that for the initial startup there may be this lost library error.
The MacMini is new as of February and the workstation is an older Mac Pro - both are running the latest versions of OS X 10.8.4 with all updates in place.
I don't have any other startup applications that require info from the MacMini.  However, since I adminster it via screen share, and usually have no exited that - screen share is happily there and fully connected after startup.   Leaving this open or shutting it down doesn't have any affect on the iTunes issue.
This seems to simple an issue for it to have a complex cause - but I am clearly missing something.
Hoping someone here has some fresh thoughts and ideas.
    Cheers -
    Dan

On a whim, I tested the remote library with my MacBook Pro.
I shut down iTunes on the MacPro Workstation and then used the Option key to startup iTunes on the MacBook Pro - and selected the remote library on the MacMini.   Worked jsut fine (of coure the size of the open window was too big) but no issues at all.
And once selected, I can close and start iTunes repeatedly with no issues on the MacBook Pro.
Then I did a Shutdown and Restart.   Following the login I get the very same popup window telling me that the iTunes library can not be found.  AND just like on the Workstation, I hit the option for Choose and it takes me right to the correct location on the MacMini - all I need to do is accept and poof it launches just as it should.
    The MacBook is on wireless.
Indications here are that this is an issue with iTunes starting up before the netowrk handshakes have completed.
    Anyone have any thoughts??

  • T60P Can't find NTFS.SYS for Boot

I have 2 - T60P's, and one of them just recently stopped booting.  I receive an error message that it can't find NTFS.SYS, and to consider using the original Windows Install disk with a REPAIR process.  I have pulled the hard drive and placed it in the other machine, and it boots fine.  I have even formatted the HD and restored a ghost image of the drive (I run ghost weekly), but same issue occurs.  I am wondering if the disk controller is fried, or if there could be an issue with the Bios.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Have you tried running any of Lenovo's Diagnostics Software on the T60p?  If so, what was the result?

  • Can't find sound card after clean reinstall from scratch to vista 32 bit from 64

    Greetings Everyone,
Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me with this frustrating problem.
I did a clean reinstall from scratch to move to vista 32 bit from vista 64.   None of my goodies (mp3 player, phone.. all sadly antiquated) played on the 64 version.  That's why I nuked it.
The reinstall worked like a charm, except now I can't get anything from the external jacks, which worked fine before the reinstall.  I've used every aspect of the device manager, and checked for downloads on each.  When I go to sound devices, it lists the soundcard as "high definition audio device," and says that the software has been updated.
The internal speakers are the delightful Altec Lansings.. and they work fine.  In fact, when I plug something into the headphone jacks, they continue working.
Therefore, I'm trying to find the name of the sound card installed on my build, and then find the driver for it.
Here's all the specs from the back if you need them:
Product: hp pavillion dv 9843cl refurbished
I'm a music lover, and I love this computer, and I'll be sooooo happy if I can get this fixed.   I'm facing music withdrawals, and getting weaker by the day.
Could anyone please offer me advice?
If there's any other information you need to know, please let me know.
    Thanks so much!

  • No sound with ALSA, using an intel sound card

    Hello !
I have got a problem about sound on my computer. Indeed, my soundcard doesn't seems to be recognize by ALSA. It's weird, I'll show you. Well, my soundcard is :
    lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
Next, my sound modules loaded are
    lsmod | grep snd
    snd_hda_intel 21837 0
    snd_seq_dummy 1479 0
    snd_seq_oss 29240 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 5516 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 50562 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
    snd_seq_device 5281 3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
    snd_pcm_oss 39509 0
    snd_hda_codec 74609 1 snd_hda_intel
    snd_mixer_oss 17730 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd_hwdep 6222 1 snd_hda_codec
    snd_pcm 72321 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_codec
    snd_timer 19537 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
    snd 58906 10 snd_hda_intel,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_codec,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
    soundcore 6161 1 snd
    snd_page_alloc 7361 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
Then, I want sound. I use alsaconf, of course, and I can choose my soundcard in a list (the other choice is "legacy"). I answer yes to the question "Do you want to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf [...] ", and then, during a few seconds :
    Loading driver...
    :: Saving ALSA Levels [BUSY]
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1519: No soundcards found... [FAIL]
It's eerie, I found my card in the list, and then not >_<
Then, alsamixer say me : "cannot open mixer: No such file or directory".
Here is my /dev/snd directory :
    lsi /dev/snd
    total 0
    crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 3 Mar 4 15:06 seq
    crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 2 Mar 4 15:06 timer
    /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer don't exist.
So, to summarize, I finally don't have sound in my computer (I never had since I made it). I also tried using OSS, but it didn't work as well.
So I need you help, if you need some more informations, I can get them. Thank you very much !
