Sparse Virtual Members in Partitions

Hi All,I am trying to learn how to write partitions, and I have done a few, so now I'm trying to get a little fancy, and it's causing me grief. I tried to make a few dimensions dynamically calced to speed up the calc time of the cubes. Now I am getting a warning message saying that my source cube has 'sparse virtual members', and although the partition is created, no data is being transferred. Can someone tell me what a sparse virtual member exactly is, and if this warning is preventing data from transferring? Thanks.Michael BulgerSelective Insurance

Correct me if I am wrong. Are you using Dynamic Calc on the sparse dimension (source & target db) with transparent partition? If you are, you need to make sure all of the Sparse Dimension's Dynamic Calc is not overlap on the source and target database. That means the target database's Dynamic Calc can only use on the level that the source database is not using. If you have any question or want to discuss more, feel free to email at [email protected]

Loading additional entity dimension members to essbase outline using load rule. Previously, the dimensions were loaded manually. File Layout includes Parent|Child|Alias|UDA|and some other Properties. Tested this in a QA enviornment successfully. All the new entities added and added to hierarchy. Since it ran successfully in QA, decided to run in PROD, and ran the load rule. The following error message was dumped into the .err file.
\\Level 0 virtual members must have a formula associated with them
The Parents of the Level 0 members were not in the outline, the same in QA. In QA, the new level 0 children's parents were added to the outline as they did not exist prior to running the load rule. When the load rule was executed, all of the new entities and parents were added correctly to QA. Expected same to occur in PROD. The outlines for QA and PROD were close to same, but were probably not exact.
Have seen posts regarding this issue for planning applications, but did not see for Essbase only. Would greatly appreciate assistance with resolving this issue.

    You can check following :
    1. If you are using Essbase, check the level 0 members have a formula associated to them if the data storage property is marked as "Dynamic Calc".
    2. If you are using planning, then make sure you do not ahve HSP_UDF as UDA attached to member in planning.

  • Virtual column based partitioning

    Hi,
we have a non-partitioned table in a production database and wish to partition it based on an expression. Since we are on 11.2 the first thing that comes to mind is virtual column based partitioning. The "problem" is that in order to partition by a virtual column, you have to create one, and adding a new column to a table could break any application that doesn't reference the existing columns by name, e.g. "SELECT *" or. "INSERT INTO table VALUES(....)".
My question is: is it possible to somehow specify the expression on which to partition directly in the "partition by" clause rather than specifying it as a virtual column definition?
    Example:
    Instead of this..
    SQL> create table test (
      2    id             number not null,
      3    content        varchar2(10),
      4    record_type    varchar2(1) generated always as (case when (substr(content, 1, 1)='B' and not substr(content, 1, 3)='Bxy') then 'B' else 'A' end) virtual
      5  )
      6  partition by list(record_type)
      7  (
      8    partition partA values ('A'),
      9    partition partB values ('B')
    10  );
Table created...I'd like to use something like this:
    SQL> create table test (
      2    id             number not null,
      3    content        varchar2(10)
      4  )
      5  partition by list((case when (substr(content, 1, 1)='B' and not substr(content, 1, 3)='Bxy') then 'B' else 'A' end))
      6  (
      7    partition partA values ('A'),
      8    partition partB values ('B')
      9  );
    partition by list((case when (substr(content, 1, 1)='B' and not substr(content, 1, 3)='Bxy') then 'B' else 'A' end))
    ERROR at line 5:
ORA-00904: : invalid identifierThank you in advance for any answers.

    Jure

adding a new column to a table could break any application that doesn't reference the existing columns by name, e.g. "SELECT *" or. "INSERT INTO table VALUES(....)". "Ok, i got it. You mean, in application you are using select * from yourtable; and those data is being used by a datagrid or any control, then where that application will show / handle the new column data right ?
Yes, thats why DBA and developers do SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle); that our table will be looks like this, these will be columns, these will be their data types, these will be followed in naming convention, privileges, indexes, storage parameters, constraints, dependent objects etc. Now after creating the table, you found a need to add a column, it means there was some lapses happened at the design time/phase or business requirements are newly defined.
So, as far as concerned of select * ... ; you have to change in the application by :
select col1, col2, new_col from your table... (as per order of your datagrid control columns). There is no other solution, you have to change in application code at every place where you have used select * and if those statements are being merged / deals into a control)
New column addition will hamper only at select * from... not with any INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE, because if they are running fine it means, they have well written column references. For DMLs you need not worry so far.
By the way, what is your technology for application ? I have worked on couple of applications in ASP.NET with using datagrid which auto add/removes the columns in itself as per cursor result (not rememberring the exact property of it though)

  • Virtual column and partition exchange load

    Hi All,

Why not run a simple test with a dummy table, a few columns (plus a virtual column) and a few partitions ?
    Excellent suggestion.
Shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes to create a test case - and if it takes more than 30 minutes the OP needs the practice anyway to get a better feel for the technology.
Hint to OP: make sure you put some data in the "incoming" table, make sure you put some data in the "non-exchanged" partitions, remember to include a unique/pk constraint if you're expecting one on production, and run with sql_trace enabled to see what's happening in the background.

  • Extern HD not recognized on E4200 due to Virtual CD "device" partition

I have an E4200 wireless router and have bought myself an external hd for media sharing (STOR.E STEEL S 1TB disk (PA4252E-1HJ0). Unfortunately this disk comes with a Virtual CD partition on it, which can not be deleted or removed (http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=247598&#247598)!! Despite this being massively annoying by itself it also renders my disk useless, as my router does not recognise the disk (to to the additional partition). Is there any possibility to extend the firmware or to provide a fix that allows me to use the partitions on the disk, despite this additional "virtual" device?

    Hi Klatch
Unfortunately the router does not recognize any partition on the disk. I've even created a 32GB FAT32 partition to be really sure that it is not the file system or something else that is bothering the E4200. I'd like to see the log messages created by the system itself but the loglevel and the messages via the web interface are too highlevel.
As I posted in my link I'm also working on getting the partition removed and am in contact with the manufacturer. Unfortunately their reply (see link in first post) is that the partition can not be removed. It is not a normal partition but required a firmware upgrade / flash to get rid of it.
As, while searching the internet for solution to getting rid of this partition, I'm seeing more and more manufacturers adding such partitions to their external disks. I think the E4200 should start to support this as I assue it will become more and more frequent in the near future.

[Target] - Partition definition is not valid: [Partition definition for slice [1] has [11] sparse virtual members]
Partition [serverx spend spend] contains member mapping errors

    what exactly this error refers
    Thank You for your help!

    Hi,
I'm also getting same error, where i have mapped only one single dimension which has no dynamic calcs, no shared memebers, no attribute dimension its just member names with alias names, marked to same dimension in other cube still got same errors.
    example
sales cube has dimension suppliers has members sup01, sup02 etc up to 20,000 members and other cube sales 2 cube has same dimension and i tried to create replicated partition got same error message.
I'm working on it to rectify will update once i have resolved it.

I'm afraid that, with this partition definition, partition pruning is working only when you use your virtual column time_id in your query.
According to documentation Information That Can Be Used for Partition Pruning:
Virtual column-based partitioned tables benefit from partition pruning for statements that use the virtual column-defining expression in the SQL statement.Maybe some tuning expert can confirm this or give another advice.

  • Replicated partition is taking a long time

I have been using a replicated partition to move some data from one Database to another and it has been working working fine.
All of a sudden the replicated partition is taking a long time ( does not complete) when I run a maxl script to refresh the replicated partition. I can't seem to figure out what caused the issue. I made sure the there are no virtual members defined in the sparse dimensions and the mapping are correct.
Any idea of why the process will take so long all of a sudden?

I have narrowed down to the problem on part of the hierarchy of the dimension. The parent member has about 2500 children under it and any time we include this part of the tree in the partition the partition takes a long time( the total number of members in the Cost center is 18K)

  • Adjusting chunk size for virtual harddisks

My data partition with VHD images is constantly run out of space. So I decided to repartition the drive in the next days. While doing that, I will redo most or all images files to sparsify the data inside the guest. There is one issue:
To reduce the amount of space needed on the host I want to reduce the "allocation chunk size" for (dynamically expanding/ sparse) virtual harddisks. Its my understanding that if a guest is writing to a filesystem block the host does actually allocate
more than the "guest block size". For example, if a guest ext3 filesystem has blocksize 4K and it writes to block #123, the host will not just allocate space for this singe 4K block at offset #123. It may allocate a much larger chunk in case the
guest attempts also to write ti #124. And so on.
A few months ago I read somewhere that this "allocation chunk size" can be adjusted. Either when the VHD image is created, or globally for all images. It was done with some powershell cmd AFAIK.
For my purpose I want to reduce it to a minimum, even if it comes with some performance cost.
How can this property be adjusted?
    Thanks.
    Olaf

    Hi Olaf,
It seems that it is beyond my ability to explain this .
But I have read this article mentioned the effect between VHD and physical disk :
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2515143
If I understand correctly , the physical disk and virtual disk only have two type of "sector" size (512 and 4K , vhd only support 512 )As for the "allocation chunk size" that you mentioned , I think it determined by different file system
(such as NTFS and ext3 ).
Maybe the powershell cmd you mentioned is " set-vhd " , it has a parameter " physicalsectorsizetype " only with two value 512 and 4096 .
For details please refer to the following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848561.aspx
    Hope this hlepsBest Regards

  • DynCalc And Transparent Partitions

Following Problem:We have a big cube (13 dimensions!!!)covering 5 years of data, which i build up every month (for performance reasons). The 5 years are members of a separate (sparse) dimension.I also have a scenario dimension (sparse) including members like actual, forecast, LastYear (DynCalc), variance (Dyncalc),...Now I think of splitting the cube in 5 single cubes, one for each year (including the scenarios actual and forecast) that should serve as the data sources in a transparent partition. The data target should be a cube with all 13 dimensions (including all years!) and all scenarios (incl. the dynamically calculated ones). Unfortunately a retrieve on e.g. the member "lastyear" (DynCalc) shows a very low performance!Any ideas?(BTW: all 13 dimensions are necessary....)

Depending on how much physical memory you have, bump up your Index Cache. You will also want to bump up your CALCCACHEHIGH to 199999999. Refer to this setting in all your memory intensive calc scripts. Unfortunately, using transparent partitioning adds a layer of overhead to data retrieves. If you have ample storage space, try changing the member option to dynamic calc and store. This will help out the performance for next user who retrieves this data. I have a very similar model. Less dimensions but some huge hierarchies.

  • How to Implement 30 days Range Partitioning with Date column. Not Interval

    Hi,
    I am using the db:
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit
    Current table structure is:
    CREATE TABLE A
    a NUMBER,
    CreationDate DATE
    PARTITION BY RANGE (CreationDate)
    INTERVAL ( NUMTODSINTERVAL (30, 'DAY') )
    (PARTITION P_FIRST
    VALUES LESS THAN (TIMESTAMP ' 2001-01-01 00:00:00'))
How can I define virtual column based partitioning with RANGE partitioning without using INTERVAL partitioning.
And that is with Intervals of 30 days.
For monthly I am trying as
    CREATE TABLE A
    a NUMBER,
    CreationDate DATE,
    monthly_interval date as (to_char(CreationDate,'MM-YYYY')) VIRTUAL
    PARTITION BY RANGE (monthly_interval)
partition p_AUG12 values less than (to_date('08-2012','mm-yyyy')),
partition p_SEP12 values less than (to_date('09-2012','mm-yyyy')),
partition p_OCT12 values less than (to_date('10-2012','mm-yyyy'))
    Enable ROw Movement
BUT CAN'T INSERT the data even for that:
    Insert into a (a, CreationDate)
    Values (1, '12-10-2012')
    Insert into a (a, CreationDate)
    Values (1, '12-10-2012')
    Please suggest..

    Hi rp,
Interval Partitioned to Range. Created Daily Partitions from Monthly Part. got complicated so I am posting here.
    Basically,
I know Interval Partitioning is a kind of Range partitioning. But explicitly for Interval Partitioned tables XML Indexes are not allowed as discussed here:
XMLIndexes on an Interval Partitioned Table??
I can do monthly partitions as :
    CREATE TABLE A
    a NUMBER,
    CreationDate DATE,
    monthly_interval varchar2(8) as (to_char(CreationDate,'MM-YYYY')) VIRTUAL
    PARTITION BY RANGE (monthly_interval)
partition p_AUG12 values less than ('09-2012'),
partition p_SEP12 values less than ('10-2012'),
partition p_OCT12 values less than ('11-2012')
    ) Enable ROw Movement
    Insert into a (a, CreationDate)
    Values (1, '12-SEP-2012')
    Insert into a (a, CreationDate)
    Values (1, '14-SEP-2012')
    Select * from A partition (p_SEP12)
    Select * from A partition (p_AUG12)
    Select * from A partition (p_OCT12)
Can we do it for 30 days partitions, instead of the monthly partitions. ANY suggestions..
    Thanks..

One minor thing I notice - your NOTE 2 problem script does not fix on your Working version, whereas the NOTE 4 script does.
With your small number of blocks, this should not be the problem, but it's probably worth quickly testing and eliminating before delving deeper.
Your script could be invoking member formulae from the Account dimension - does your outline validate ok..?
I cannot tell from your NOTE 4 script which member relates to the Account dimension - is it 2251026?
Whichever it is, it is worth expanding NOTE 4 script up to @RELATIVE("EBITDA",0)....
    - if it runs, you know the problem is with your sparse member selections (ie number of blocks being calculated).
    - If it doesn't run, then you know there is a problem in calculating one or more of the Accounts under EBITDA.  In which case, gradually narrow the range of Accounts to locate the Account or Accounts that trigger the issue.  Chances are there's a problem with the member formula

  • Partitioning by days of week

    Hi,
How would you partition a table with a DATE column (DD-MON-YYYY) by days of the week? Therefore, all data for monday in one partition, data for tuesday in another partition and so on.
    Thanks!

In Oracle 11g, there is now support for virtual column based partitioning. So you should be able to add a virtual column to your table and have that use the to_char function to extract the day of the week -
    day_of_week AS TO_CHAR(my_date,'DAY')
Then, you should be able to just use range or list partitioning on this virtual column to create your day of the week partitions. The ILM Assistant only supports partitioning by DATE columns, so this partitioning scheme would not work with the Assistant.

  • Odd Behaviour using User Variables to select members in Planning form

I have a form to enter budget adjustments and another form to review the effects of those adjustments at a parent Entity level.
For each area of the business there are obviously different adjustment and parent levels required in the form.
In summary I can drive a form from a User Variable using the functions (Children, IChildren, ILvl0Descendants, Descendants and IDescendants) but trying to use other options results in unexpected behaviour.
For example with the following structure:
    Entity
    -Total Cost Centre
    --Group A
    ---SubGroupA1
    ---SubGroupA2
    ---SubGroupA3
    ---GroupA-Adj
    ----GroupA-AdjX
    -----AdjEntityA1
    -----AdjEntityA2
    --Group B
    ---SubGroupB1
    ---SubGroupB2
    ---SubGroupB3
    ---GroupB-Adj
    ----GroupB-AdjX
    -----AdjEntityB1
    -----AdjEntityB2
For the adjustment entry form the users would want to see AdjEntityA1 and AdjEntityA2 if they are in business group A.
For the review form they would like to see Group A and its children.
I am trying to avoid writing multiple forms for each business user (largely because the number of groups can vary dramatically). I can't really use generations to drive the selections as whilst the business has effectively levelled the hierarchy business units can be working at different levels of this hierarchy.
I want to offer a couple of options to the business. One will be to define a form that pulls all of the relevant entities into the form and relies on security to restrict the values displayed to the user. The second option would be to utilise User Variables to drive selections. It is the second option I am struggling with.
If we consider a user working in Group A, I think I can see a formulaic way to select the various combinations of Entities if I set the user variable to be GroupA-Adj.
I can define a data form that sets Entity to the L0Descendants of say GroupA-Adj and this is fine.
When I try to define a review form that selects the Isiblings and Parent of GroupA-Adj I hit a problem.
It seems that Children, IChildren, ILvl0Descendants, Descendants and IDescendants works as I would expect.
Using IAncestors and IParents return just the User Variable setting (i.e. just the 'I' part, not the parents or Ancestors).
Siblings, Isiblings, Parents, Ancestors all result in an error message because not all dimensions are represented in the form.
This prevents me using a User Variable to build the review form in which I would like to display the siblings and parent of the entity GroupA-Adj.
    Anyone got any ideas?

I would love to see the ability to select EDA's from Planning Forms, it would definately make life a little easier.
As CL says, attributes are great at filtering forms and BR's, their only drawback is that you can only use them on sparse dimensional members.
To get round this problem i've relied on security to filter out the accounts i do not need to see in the forms for the specific users, and kept the form selection on @IDESCENDANTS(Account_Parent).
If you wish to filter on the Period dimension and this is a dense dimension, can you not get round the problem with rollups and, for example, @DESCENDANTS(Q1) to only return 3 months in the form, it really depends on your outline structure.

  • Select Members in Data Forms via UDA or Substitutionvariable

    Hello,
I want to select members in row or colum dimension of a Planning data form via an UDA. But it is only possible to select members via hierarchy (member, sibling, parent,...).
Is there a possibility to select members via UDA?
    What I tried is:
1.) in the definition of the dimension members for the dimension "Period" in the data form I filled in: "@UDA(Period,FC01)".
I get the error "The member @UDA(Period does not exist or you do not have access to it."
2.) Instead of the UDA I tried to use a Substitutionvariable "&PER_LIST"
This works if the Substitutionvariable contains only one member. It doesn't work if it contains more than one member (comma-separated list).
I get the error: "A substitution variable required for this calculation is undefined. Variable: PER_LIST" (even though the variable exists and I selected it in the member selection dialog)
Can anyone help? I'm using Hyp. System 9.3.1.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nicole
