Special Characters in post

I am having trouble with my HTML forms posting special characters like trademark symbol, copyright symbol, etc, to a servlet. If the user uses the html equivalents (ex. & #153;), it works fine. But I have alot of clients who do a copy-paste from an excel spreadsheet which explicitely pastes the symbol. My servlet log displays a ? instead of the symbol.
Is this not supported in the post? Do I have to set the accept-charset attribute of the form tag?

Thanks, that is a good idea (assuming JavaScript is able to interpret the character). I am still hoping there is a way around that.
The TM test on my original post did not work. Yet, if you paste the TM special character in the search box on the top of this window the search will return the special character on the results page. So, there should be a way to do it.
Any other suggestions out there?

I would like to know how does IE browser handle slug if the value field has certain special characters.
For example if the slug header has special characters while posting the http request (say "äøéëåæ")
Then I see using http watch under the "Stream"tab , the slug value is getting converted to a different value(now the value for the above mentioned slug is " Ã¤Ã¸Ã©Ã«Ã¥Ã")
Could someone please explain how does this happen in IE browser?

ISO-8859-1 Special Characters turn to Question Marks; How to post Resumes?

I am building a web based application and I have a TextArea in an HTML form. Users can copy and paste their resumes (source - Microsoft Word Docs) into this text area. Once the resume is posted, tomcat handles the request. The request is posted to another JSP, Struts Action Class (Any Java Class that can write to a database).
When I do a System.out.println(request.getParameter("resume")); I the special characters like bullets and quotes and a bunch of others are getting transformed to Question Marks. When I insert the resume into an Oracle Database (into a clob field) they are still being saved a question marks.
I have a JSP Page that displays the posted resume. It has 2 things - It writes the request.getParameter("resume") to the HTML and this comes out fine. But when it writes the resume that is retrieved from the oracle database, i am getting back question marks.
I understand that Java uses unicode for character encoding/representation and I tried changing my HTML page's charset to UTF-8. Did not work. I see that there are a million websites that let users copy and paste their resumes. How are these resumes stored and retrieved from a database using server side java? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

FindNode returning Null And XML Not Accepting Special Characters

Hi All,
i am trying the get the attribute value in the element "ns4:InfoCFDi" using FindNode method, but the method is returning NULL. I used the same code for other sample as well and was successfull. but for this specific XML file(which is below) I am getting a Null.
i can get till S:Body, but when i try to use FindNode for ":Body/s4:ResponseGeneraCFDi" I get Null value.
And I used "S:Body/*[local-name()=" | "ns4:ResponseGeneraCFDi" | "]";
as mentioned in other post but still no success.
==>I Have one more question relating to special characters. I need to use characters such as - ó in my XML to read as well as write. When I try to read i am getting XML parse error and when writing, i cannot open the file properly.

First of all you have to supply a value you want to search for and this has to be the complete path to the value. You're saying you already tried that, but can you paste the code which you used for that? I don't see the path mentioned in the code you posted.

Concering the special characters; you will have to change the encoding of the XML. Peoplecode sets this to UTF-8 by default, but doesn't include this in the header. There's a little hack for that somewhere on the web, I'll see if I can find it.

I want to replace the ascii representation with the apostrophe and have the returned data show up as: CREEK's LANE
When I try the query below I get prompted for substitution variable value.
I don't seem to be able to find the right syntax to make this query work.

streets WHERE street_id = 1
Does anybody know how to do this?

GeorgeHa! The codes you specified rendered in the HTML, but showed properly when I listed your original posting above. I didn't understand what you meant initially because the 5-character string represenation got rendered as the quote that you said you weren't able to get - a display problem.
You're getting prompted for the substituon variable because of the ampersand; you appear to be doing this in SQL*PLUS. The first thing I would try is to SET DEFINE OFF when using the ampersands to see if that works. If That doesn't work check the docs to delmit the ampersand (I think its a backslash before it but can't remember offhand). Another, harder option might be to use the TRANSLATE function replacing the literal character instead of using REPLACE (though replacing a quote will be a little tricky). If you're on 10g also consider using the advanced quoting

to equation by function Sendkeys, but the return value of Asc() or AscW() for "double arrow", "in" , " not greater than " such special characters or signs, to name but a few are the same ,i.e., 40 And I cannot distinguish them.

I have a Flash Sample to rotate images and text but I not find a way to display special characters

I would appreciate if any of you know how to do, so that the text displayed, including the characters I use in my language (Spanish), such as á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ, and other special characters.
In fact, I could not find a way to do it, because I'm not expert Flash, and less in ActionScript.

I have created an classic SQL Report with one of the columns being a decode that gives a value 'Post'(the value should be highlighted in Red) on one condition and 'Pre' on another. I have followed the advice given in the page (URL provided above) , i.e. I have changed Strip HTML to 'No', changed Display as to 'Display as text (escape special characters, does not save state)'. I have also passed this value back to the same page to be stored in a page item each time a link (another column in report) in report is clicked. I have tried passing it as #DEADLINE# and \#DEADLINE#\. The issue I face is, instead of the value being highlighted in Red, it gets passed back as a string holding the value 'Post'. Is there any way I can get this to display as it should without the Strip HTML being changed to 'Yes'.

You can't pass HTML and CSS around in URL parameters.

I created another hidden and protected page item <tt>P0_HIGHLIGHT</tt> as the target for the highlight value, and used the Pre/Post Element Text properties of the <tt>P0_G_MGR</tt> to wrap it in a <tt>span</tt> whose colour is changed using the <tt>P0_HIGHLIGHT</tt> value as a subtitution string:

I have a MacBook purchased in 2009 with Snow Leopard. I tried to access "special characters" from the Finder menu and an intermittent blank pop ups and will not stop. It also happens when I run Word or Pages.

The blank pop up began as I tried to access "special characters" from the finder menu. I restarted, turned off and restarted and it did not work. It interferes with any application because I cannot work fast. Every new step takes a few seconds longer such as saving, finding text, check spelling and many more. I am desperate to solve this. Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Special characters are not showing properly in FF.

I am developing an website where user can input special characters like '¥' or '╩' like this. I have to store these value to DB and wold display it from DB. When I try to fetch these value from DB, it looks like '�'. I am using <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> in my jsp page. This is working fine in Chrome, problem occurs with FF only. Please help.

Are you serving the page fully formed, or inserting the characters into the page from an XMLHttpRequest? Could you post a link to a page demonstrating the problem?

Special characters in XML document

I have a Flash file saved as version 8 with the following script calling an xml file:

My xml file contains the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<![CDATA[Smith's dog & cat are "crazy"]]>
When posted online my flash file displays the encoding tag in the xml file.
AND the apostrophe, ampersand and quote marks display as html code instead of the actual character.
I can take the encoding tag out of the xml file but my characters still don't display correctly.
My dynamic text field in flash (myText) does have special characters embedded, plus I have them entered manually in the field for 'include these characters'.
Does anyone have suggestions for me?

Perhaps you need a slightly different approach to loading the XML. Instead of loading the entire XML file, what if you loaded only the child you were looking for? This is what I usually do:

Mac file name restrictions/special characters

What are the Mac OS file name restrictions? What are the special characters to avoid?
Is this a legitimate file name? Are the colons allowed?

A user tried to provide a file with a name similar to that in my original post (e.g. "name 3:4:07.rtf") using a web form, and I'm at a loss as to how they could have saved it with the colons. Thank you for your assistance.

Storing carriage return and other special characters in a TestStand variable and passing to LabVIEW

I am using TestStand step to call a LabVIEW VI that writes commands to a serial device. The device expects a carriage return at the end of the command. I can create a constant string in TestStand with the carriage return, e.g., "ATA\x0D" and pass that to a LabVIEW string control which shows ATA\r and the VI works properly.
To provide consistency and flexibility in my code, I want to store the terminator character(s) in a TestStand variable. However, when I try to use an expression to create the command string, i.e. "ATA" + "Locals.Terminator", where Locals.Terminator is set to "\x0D", my LabVIEW VI string control shows "ATA\\x0D" which doesn't work. And when I try Locals.Terminator set to "\r", the LabVIEW string control shows "ATA\\r" which doesn't work either.
Is there a way to store special characters in a TestStand variable and pass them to LabVIEW as special characters? I saw in another post that if you edit the TestStand variable by pressing Cntl-Enter, it will store the newline \n properly and it can be sent to LabVIEW - that works for me as well for \n. But I need to send a carriage return.
I've attached my test sequence and the corresponding LabVIEW VI with a string control.

Thanks for your detailed explanation and examples. In TestStand, change the String parameter's String Type to Binary String instead of ASCII. Then it will pass the desired value.

RegExp for excluding special characters in a string.

Im using Flex RegExpValidator. Can anyone suggest me the correct expression to validate this condition?....
I have tried this expression :----- /^[^///\/</>/?/*&]+$/...But in this it is also negating the alphabets.Also I have tried with opposite condition that in the String we should have alphabets and the expression is:-- ([a-z]|[A-Z]|[0-9]|[ ]|[-]|[_])*..... Please can anyone help me on this.
