Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects your version of OS X, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A remark such as "X doesn't work" conveys no useful information. If X did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead." Include the complete, verbatim text of any error messages you saw, and specify where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever.
Also describe the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, give details.
Post in the most relevant discussion area. Usually that means the area for the type of Mac you're using, if the problem is hardware-related, or for the OS X version you’re running, if it’s more software-related.

  • Speech dictation not working

I purchased the new iPad and the speech dictation will not pick work or makes any indication that it is analyzing any speech or sound for that matter. Is this something apple is in the process of working on?

My mic was functioning when my dictation stopped working. Apple suggested that a system file may have been corrupted, which explains why a simple reset did not work. Solution, connect your iPad to iTunes and do a full restore of your iPad. By the way this was written using dictation. Looking forward to the Siri update!

  • Dictation not working on Mountain Lion?

I enabled dictation on my mac through the System Preferences. First I tried going to notes and pressed the fn key twice, the Siri like mic appeared and I began to say simple words such us "hello" "how are you" and pressed done. The thre dots appeared for a few seconds then the 'three dots' went left to right and nothing appeared. I've tried this on notes, microsoft word, and also while typing this discussion. Any ideas?

Everything else is working...Facebook, Google Search, iTunes store, I downloaded updates for Pages and restarted hours again. Slow connection or not, something is not right. Here is what I am seeing: In System Preferences, Dictation & Speech note the Dictation option is OFF and the radio button to "turn it on" is greyed out. I have tried pressing the FN key and then quickly pressing and holding the Fn key down and talking using a open Pages document. I am not sure what's going on. Dictation just is not working.
I am using a MacBook 13 inch Mid 2009 2.13 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, on a 6 Mb DSL Internet connection.

  • Speech recognition not working

I have an iPhone 5 and for several months, no form of speech recognition has worked, whether for Siri or, for example,  voice dictation when sending text messages,
Whenever I try to use the feature, the line does not wave at all, as though the mic is not picking up any sound. But I can speak to people on the phone just fine.
It's been this way for several months, and the phone has be reset and shut on and off several times in theat period. I switched Siri on and off in that time as well. Can anyone help me?

You should have mentioned that so I can saved some typing.
Have you tried these 2 basic troubleshooting steps?

  • Speech Recognition Not Working Well

Not matter how hard I try to get my speech recognition to work on my MacBook Pro, it is very temperamental! Even when I am in a quiet space it will respond, but after a while it won't. I've tried calibrating it, etc but doesn't make a huge difference.
What makes me think there is a problem is the fact that when speech recognition is activated there is supposed to be lights that light up (on the actual speech recognition widget thing - as I have noticed on various other MacBook Pro users' YouTube videos). But for mine, the bottom, blue light only lights up; and no matter how loud I shout at it, the blue light DOESN'T then go on to the green light. However, when I calibrate it, my speech is recognised as being in the 'green area'; so I am speaking t the right level.
    I appreciate your help!

  • Speech Commands - Not working after 1st command

Speech commands were working properly several days ago just after doing a fresh 10.8 install, not upgrade.  I have since installed many programs.
Speech Commands are turned on and my microphones are all working.  The first command is heard perfectly by the system.  Any further commands are not acknowledged by the system.  I can reboot and I can again issue one command.  The calibration under Accessibility>Settings shows it hears the commands.  I can change the microphone, I have several and still only the first command is acknowledged.
I have looked over many posts concerning this and I see others are having the same problem and some have tried manually installing the newest Java directly from Oracle.
Oddly enough, dictation works perfectly, so I know my MAC can hear me ok, just something loused up with the speech getting to the accessibility>speekable items.  I have tried various Key to actively listen for commands.   I have modified the listening method in various options "Listen only while key is pressed" and "Listen continuously with keyword"
Does anyone have this issue and know how to solve it?

This is an update in case anyone else has a similar issue with Speech Commands.
I ran accrosss a post in Apple discussions from 2011, regaurding a very similar issue.  The acutal issue had something to do with the system voice.  I had changed my system voice to Sangeeta, one of the Aplle English voices with an Indian accent.  It seems that only the default voices seem to work correctly with the speech commands.
I changed my system voice back to Alex, deleted the speech files (above) then rebooted my computer.  Calibrated the speakable items then there was no issue with speech commands.
In my NSHO, Apple needs to fix this issue, at least properly address it.  I so wanted to use Sangeeta's voice, but I would rather have Alex and a properly working speech commands.

  • Dictation not working. Please help.

Just bought an iMac. Updated to mountain lion yesterday. Wanted to try Dictation, but doesn't seem to work. Have tried rebooting, changing language preferences, region preferences etc etc. but still not working. Three blue dots appeared and then disappeared. Please help.

I think that the best thread that resolves this issue for most involves many options/suggestions.  I tried the above and it didn't work for me, but changing or adding DNS numbers under 'Network' in sys. preferences seems to have worked for me.  What a frustrating experience though!  I have a few glitches and I think I'll eventually do a clean install and hope that this resolves the issue.  I've already spend money on doubleing my RAM, which seems to have helped (but not for this issue) the beachball issue, and bought an 8GB thumb drive to create an install disk to do a clean install. Now I just fear that I'm going to lose many files/folders, even though I use time machine to back up, I'm not convinced that it's best to reinstall from this as I think it may recopy all the 3 year garbage I have and result in the same issues.  Ugh. I sort of regret 'upgrading' to Mountain Lion now, but there are a lot of cool features.  Hopefully more updates are coming soon that will resolve some of the multitude of issues that people are talking about here.  Here's the thread that resolved my issue, the first reply on page one that has the green 'this solved my issue' flag....https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4137078?start=0&tstart=0

  • Yosemite dictation not working in safari and others

I was using dictation in all apps until recently. now it only works in Mail. I've tried turning it off, restart, on, restart. Not working. Any suggestions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to start Dictation in app where it doesn't work. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • HT5176 iPad 3 - Dictation not working

For any reason dictation is not working on my iPad anymore. Did that happen to anybody else as well? Or does someone have a solution for that?
It used to be working and I have no idea what is the problem.

Not sure I could even tell you what I did specifically and in what order. I really didn't hold out any hope that it might work. To be honest both my iPad and my iPhone 4S were acting up this morning. Siri was unbelievably slow and couldn't finish simple tasks for me. So I did a full reboot of the iPhone and that didn't seem to work either...
Wow just as I was using dictation on my iPhone to finish this post it gave up half way through giving me the three purple dots then finally giving up. I tried a couple of times with very simple dictation and no dice. My iPhones loading wheel is still spinning so I'm figuring it's a server glitch or dictation is suddenly requiring too many resources.
    Now it's back working fine.
I know that I did reboot both my iPhone and iPad after I disabled dictation from my iMac but then reenable it again and it's working okay on my computer. Strange that this happened after updating to Mountain lion. Curious?
Sorry I can't be more help

  • Enhanced dictation not working

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with dictation not starting up completely.  When I hit the fn key twice, it starts to load and gives me an error message.  I've googled this issue and came across a few different suggestions that didn't work, hoping to have more luck posting here.  Any help would be appreciated.

Still having an issue, does anyone have any experience solving this particular problem?  Thank you

  • "new line" in dictation not working in Outllook for Mac 14.2.4

Today I tried using dictation and it works except when I give it the commands "new line".
Again, the dictation is working in all Apple applications.

    Killbygirl,
I am going to do what I can to help resolve your issue in a timely manner, and what is most easiest for you. Ok lets get started!
First ensure that you have all software updates installed. You can do this by following the instructions provided here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh292.html
Once you have verified that all updates are installed open system preferences, locate Sound which is located in the hardware category. Once located click on Sound and the Sound preference will open. On the top you will see three tabs. Sound Effects, Output, Input. Click on the input tab and in the "Choose a device for sound input" box click on Line in. Also verify that the settings in any audio recording applications that you are using are setup correctly.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please don't hesitate to let me know and I would be happy to be of assistance!

  • Dictation not working in Illustrator CS5 / OS 10.9.4

I finally managed to get dictation to work on my new iMac and the one program I do most of the dictating to is Adobe illustrator CS5. My first text block I was so excited to see everything I say turn right into text (especially for our proposals), but I got nothing. I hear the beep as it normally does in all other apps but I don't see the microphone pop up within the text block that I'm trying to dictate into. Any possible help or a fix would be greatly appreciated.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account and install it there.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • SIRI Dictation not working with google docs

I was wondering if anyone knew why siri dication does not work in google docs. It wont work on chrome, works only once on firefox, and wont work in safari. Yes I followed all troubleshooting documents already. Just in the physical google doc when typing a document it does not work. It'll work anywhere else in general, just not on that page. Any ideas? thanks!

I am assuming that it has to do with Apples feud with Google. I have the same problem, it is begun to appear that Apple is trying to make it as difficult as possible for Apple users to integrate Google applications into their workflows. It is an incredibly frustrating miscalculation on their part and will be a major factor in my decision to discontinue patronage.
