Split string based on number of characters

Hi,
I have a simple map where I receive a Streetname out of the source and have to write that streetname to the Address1 element in the destination. The issue is that the destination Address1 element can only contain 100 characters.
If it has more then 100 characters then I have to split the string into the Address2 element.
The next question is how I can do it the good way so that the string would be split between spaces and not in the middle of a word. For example:
Streetname1 Streetname2 Streetname3 Streetname4 Streetname5 Streetname6 Streetname7 Streetname8 Streetname9
The hundredth character is between t and r in Streetname9. So the cleanest solution would be to place everything in address1 and Streetname9 in address 2.
How can I achieve this?

I had faced a similar situation in which output element could only contain 100 characters after that i had to split rest of characters in batch of 100 characters and repeated the element.
This was achieved by implementing recursion through XSLT. For this I created a template which will return a substring a generate an element with that element. This template will take two parameters-1) Complete string 2) Length (100 in your case).
check the below article for a sample

Prashant

  • How to split string based on either space or tab delimitation?

    I'm trying to split a string into 4 fields.  The strings sometimes have space delimitation and sometimes have tab delimitation.  Is there any way to do this in a SELECT, or do I need a couple staging tables, or what?
    I'm trying to work with this.
    Select PARSENAME(replace(replace(replace(replace([Column 0],' ','<>'),'><',''),'char(9)',' '),' ','.'),4) Date,
    PARSENAME(replace(replace(replace(replace([Column 0],' ','<>'),'><',''),'char(9)',' '),' ','.'),3) ID,
    PARSENAME(replace(replace(replace(replace([Column 0],' ','<>'),'><',''),'char(9)',' '),' ','.'),2) Rank1,
    PARSENAME(replace(replace(replace(replace([Column 0],' ','<>'),'><',''),'char(9)',' '),' ','.'),1) Rank2
    Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    My solution was, using a user defined function to split the text:
    Use Master
    Go
    CREATE FUNCTION dbo.udf_SplitString(@InputVal VARCHAR(200), @Delimiter CHAR(1))
    RETURNS @Items TABLE (RowNo TINYINT, ITEM VARCHAR(100))
    As
    BEGIN
    DECLARE @FieldLen TINYINT = 0, @FieldEnum TINYINT = 0, @TempItem VARCHAR(100) = '', @ItemLoop TINYINT = 1
    SET @FieldLen = LEN(@InputVal)
    WHILE @FieldEnum <= @FieldLen
    BEGIN
    IF (SUBSTRING(@InputVal, @FieldEnum + 1, 1) = @Delimiter OR @FieldEnum = @FieldLen) AND @TempItem <> ''
    BEGIN
    INSERT @Items (RowNo, Item)

    SET @TempItem = ''
    SET @ItemLoop += 1
    END
    ELSE

    END
    END
    SET @FieldEnum += 1

    Hi All,
    Is there a FM available which can split string based on seprator e.g ABC XYZ needs to be separated using space delimeter.
    Thanks!

    if you dont know the number of occurrences of the delimeter you can use the following code.
    data: source type string ,
          target type standard table of string .
    source = 'This is for test.' .
    split source at ' ' into table target .

  • Retreiving number and characters from string

    Hello fellow developers,
    Lets say i have the following string ER686 and want to split the string into a number and characterpart resulting in a String "ER" and an int "686". What is the best approach to accomplish this?
    Thank you for any help offered.

    The format is that there's a sequence of strings 2 or
    3 and a squence of numbers 3 or 4You might use a Pattern matcher, using a regular expression like the following :"(\\D{2,3})(\\d{3,4})"This expressions represents "two or three non-digit characters followed by 3 or 4 digits". The parenthesis are here to allow getting the two elements (groups) separately.
    Use the find() method of the matcher, then retrieve the two groups with group(1) and group(2).
    Eventually, parse the latter if required.

    hi,
    Use STRLEN for Calculating String Length..
    Assign it to integer variable for Further Use.Suppse u need to find string length for "hai".. this piece of code will help u

  • Number of characters in a string

    Hi,
    I need to find the number of characters in a string. For instance, i have a string type variable with the value "ABAP". How can i know how many letters "A" there are in that string? Is there any FM that does this?
    Cheers,
    Roberto

    Hi,
    you can make use of string operation FIND as:
    DATA: text1 TYPE string VALUE `A`,
             text TYPE string,
          off  TYPE i,
          moff TYPE i,
          mlen TYPE i.
    off = 0.
    WHILE sy-subrc = 0.
      FIND text1 IN SECTION OFFSET off OF
           `ABAP`
           MATCH OFFSET moff
           MATCH LENGTH mlen.
      IF sy-subrc = 0.
        WRITE / moff.
        off = moff + mlen.
      ENDIF.
    ENDWHILE.

  • Method to count number of characters in a string?

    public class Stringcheck
    public static int maxStringLength;
    public static double minSize;
    public static boolean testStringLength(String x)
    // Insert method for counting number of chars in String x and name as 'int numberOfChars

    ummm, you dont need anything fancy. try:
    String test = "this is the test string";
    int length = test.length();

  • Split string into two based on end of word and max length

    I have the following procedure, which is passed a comma separated string as it input, and it has to split it into two, and the split has to occur at the end of a word, and the first split part can't be more than 15 in length.
    Is there an more efficient way of achieving this? I have a loop in my main code that calls this procedure and in effect a nested loop has been created here.
    e.g. Hello, everyone, welcome, to, split, string' would be split into 'Hello' and 'everyone, welcome, to, split, string'
    create or replace procedure split_str
                   (pi_str  in  varchar2,
                    po_str1 out nocopy varchar2,
                    po_str2 out nocopy varchar2) is
      i number;
    begin
      if (len(pi_str) <= 15) then
        po_str1 := pi_str;
        po_str2 := NULL;
      else
        i := 1;
        loop
          exit when len(SUBSTR(pi_str, 1 ,INSTR(pi_str, ',', 1, i)-1)) > 15;
          po_str1 := SUBSTR(pi_str, 1 ,INSTR(pi_str, ',', 1, i)-1);
          po_str2 := SUBSTR(pi_str, INSTR(pi_str, ',', 1, i)+2);
          i := i+1;
        end loop;
      end if;
    end split_str;

    You want to find the last space character before the 15th character.
    x := INSTR ( SUBSTR ( pi_str, 1, 15) , ' ' , -1)Then the first string is SUBSTR(pi_str,1,x) and the second string is SUBSTR(pi_str,x+1)

    Thx

    But there is the while statement which filters null
    values..Which is useless in your case, because you proceed to change the value of st to something else which you don't check for null.
    At any rate, what you have to do is this:
    1. Look at the stack trace to find the line number where the error occurs.
    2. Look at that line in your code.
    3. Look at each object variable in that line. Find out how it became null and fix that.

    Helena, I think you might get a better response either from the SQL-PL/SQL forum, or perhaps the Portal Applications forum - both of these tend to have folks very familiar with PL/SQL and the OWA packages.
    This forum is on Web services based on SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. These can be PL/SQL based but typically don't use the mod_psql or OWA web solution.
    As a pointer, I suspect you may already be familiar with, but just in case, you can always take a look at chapter 3 of the OAS documentation, "Developer's Guide: PL/SQL and ODBC Applications" where they go through a number of examples using parameters. See:
    http://technet.oracle.com/doc/appsrvr4082/guides/plsql.pdf
    Hope this or folks from the other list can help.
    Mike.

  • How do I limit number of characters in a JTextField?(different from others)

    Hi,
    I know this question has been posted several times on this forum, but my question is actually a different one. So please read.
    I have the following code that puts two JTextFields in a JFrame. I want to limit the number of characters in the first JTextField to three characters. What's different about my question from other solutions provided, is that I don't want to be able to type more than three characters in the JTextField, and then not be able to get out of JTextField unless I have three or less characters. What I do want, is to have maximum of three characters, not be able to type the fourth, and have access to the other JTextField at all times.
    I have tried the following solution of setting an InputVerifier to my JTextField, but it hasn't worked, since I can still type the fourth character.
    Looking forward to your help!
    Thanks.
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import java.awt.event.KeyAdapter;
    import java.awt.event.KeyEvent;
    import javax.swing.InputVerifier;
    import javax.swing.JComponent;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    import javax.swing.JTextField;
    public class TextFieldVerifier {
         public TextFieldVerifier()
              JFrame frame = new JFrame("My TextVerifier");
              JPanel panel = new JPanel();
              JLabel firstTextFieldLabel = new JLabel("First: ");
              JLabel secondTextFieldLabel = new JLabel("Second: ");
              final JTextField myTextField = new JTextField();
              myTextField.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(100,20));
              myTextField.setInputVerifier(new InputVerifier()
                   public boolean verify(JComponent input) {
                        if(myTextField.getText().length()<=3)
                             return true;
                        else
                            return false;
              myTextField.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter()
                   public void keyTyped(KeyEvent e)
                        if(!myTextField.getInputVerifier().verify(myTextField))
                             myTextField.setText(myTextField.getText().substring(0, myTextField.getText().length()-1));
              JTextField secondTextField = new JTextField();
              secondTextField.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(100,20));
              panel.add(firstTextFieldLabel);
              panel.add(myTextField);
              panel.add(secondTextFieldLabel);
              panel.add(secondTextField);
              frame.getContentPane().add(panel);
              frame.setSize(new Dimension(200,100));
              frame.setVisible(true);
         public static void main (String [] args)
              TextFieldVerifier v = new TextFieldVerifier();
    }

    Thanks, JayDS! Your suggestion worked. And I've come up with the following code with help of your suggestion. However, I'm not happy with the fact that I see empty spaces in my JFormattedTextField when I don't have anything entered in it, or when my textfield has focus and I click it again. Also, I'd like the text alignment to always stay on the right, even if I have less than 3 digits.
    Could you please help me out with that?
    Thanks!
