Spotlight keeps indexing in snow leopard
Spotlight keeps indexing for the last 2 weeks. I tsometimes has 45 mins till finishing, but when I check later, it still indexing without a estimate of time when it will finish. I have selected my ext. HD not to be index, but it still states it indexing my main HD. What can I do? I'm using 10.6.8. Also have 4 USB, 2 tb ext HD attachded. 2-to a usb hub and 2 -to the back of the imac. What can I do?
Austin
I had the same problems with spotlight that kept indexing. I solved them by using the following commands in the Terminal:
$ sudo rm -rf /.Spotlight-V100/*
$ sudo mdutil -i on -E /
As explained here:

hi,
The Time Capsule at work stopped taking backups of my machine on July,1. For my colleagues, it still works fine. I also noticed spotlight keeps trying to index the disk.
As a solution I removed the latest backup (indicated with 'inProgress' and I verified the disk with disk utility. I took 3 days, but mentioned no errors. I tried a couple of times to restart the backup, and now it finally seems to work again. Backup works (but very slow), however spotlight keeps indexing.
I already tried restarting the spotlight server, but it does not help. I tried other suggestions on the web but nothing seems to work...See #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Spotlight after TM restore (snow leopard)
Hi guys,
I restored my Mac with TM. Im booting Snow Leopard. After the restoration spotlight isnt working.
Someone can help?
ThnxDo you mean you get no results, or it won't index, or what?
TM does not save the Spotlight index; so when you restore, Spotlight should rebuild it. While it's indexing, there should be a (rather tiny) dot inside the Spotlight icon in your menubar.
You can force re-indexing via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. Exclude your internal HD for a few moments, then remove the exclusion. The dot should be shown in a few moments; wait for it to complete the re-indexing. -
Spotlight Privacy State on Snow Leopard and Leopard dual boot system
I have leopard 10.5.8 running on the internal HD of my iMac, and decided to start fresh with a clean install of Snow Leopard (now 10.6.1) on a firewire drive. The game plan is to slowly add my apps as they are updated and compatability issues are ironed out, and use Super Duper to clone the SL system over to my internal once it's where I want it to be.
The issue I'm having is when I boot between the systems, whatever Spotlight privacy settings I have set on one system is transferred over to the other upon booting into it. For example, I have the SL disk in the privacy list on my Leopard system, so I don't accidentally launch the Snowy versions of Disk Utility and whatnot when using spotlight. When I boot into SL, it remains on the exclude list, so all my spotlight hits are from the Leopard system. I redo my privacy settings on SL to include the SL disk and exclude the leopard and the system re-indexes itself.
But the next time I boot into Leopard, the changes I made while in SL are carried over, and my Leopard Disk now appears in the privacy settings and SL isn't. I redo the privacy settings, wait while it reindexes, and this vicious circle continues every time I boot between systems.
Isn't the spotlight privacy settings supposed to be written to each system's disk? I tried using the app spotless, but same deal..whatever disks I include or exclude from being indexed on one system are automatically written to the other system as well.
Any ideas? Is this a bug, or how it's supposed to work? Thanks in AdvanceThe privacy settings for a drive are stored on the drive itself in the /.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/VolumeConfig.plist file.
This is drive specific so if you move a drive between systems, the privacy settings are maintained. There is no practical way to solve the problem unfortunately.
You do not however, have to worry about launching Snow Leopard apps on your Leopard system. You won't be able to, receiving an error similar to "not designed for this architecture".
As an alternative, have a look at BlackTree's Quicksilver application. You could use it instead of Spotlight on one or both of your systems. -
Mail keeps disappearing in Snow Leopard
All of my mail, mailboxes and folders keep disappearing in Mail 4.1. Ever since I updated to Snow Leopard this keeps happening. I constantly have to remove and reenter my MobileMe Imap Info and I am afraid one day I will not be able to reconfigure and all my mail will be lost. PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS!
Having the same problem - random messages just keep disappearing
A colleague noticed that messages are just vanishing from her inbox in front of her eyes. She was in the middle of reading one when it just disappeared! It doesn't show up in any searches or other folders. Sometimes they re-appear when she quits Mail and re-opens it, but sometimes they don't which is a huge worry. I've tried re-building mailboxes when they don't re-appear but no joy. She hasn't got any rules or filters applied.
Could it be anything to do with the 'compact mailboxes automatically' option in mail - preferences - accounts - advanced? It's greyed out so can't change it?
She's got an IMAP account and mail is controlled by an Exchange 2003 server. Recently upgraded her OS X to Snow Leopard as it was an issue on Leopard too. Posted the problem on the OS X 10.5 boards too but got no answers. Running out of ideas and i'm getting flack for not knowing what's going on or how to fix it.
Why are you doing this Mail, why?!

Lion's spotlight is wors than Snow leopard's
I'm very dissatisfied width the spotlight in Lion. When I type a word and click Show All in Finder, the opened window is regressed.
I can't set the width of the columns, set the location of search (e.g.: home folder / This Mac) or type of search: Contents or File Name.
This functions was very smart in the previous spotlight...
Spotlight in Snow Leopard:
Spotlight in Lion:Thanks. It was helpful.
But I still can't set the width of columns.
I've found a solution for set the type of listed files: With the + bottom, I can add a new search criteria. But it was better and easier in the previous verison of OS X. -
Help! My iMac keeps crashing since Snow Leopard and RAM upgrade...
...tried starting up from disc...new user...reset PRAM...still crashing...is it bad RAM? Is my Mac too old for the 10.6.8 upgrade?
Model Identifier: iMac4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you!Backup your current system. Do this:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Upon completion quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. -
Why does my computer keep ejecting the snow leopard install disk
I am trying to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my MacBook Pro. However, every time I insert the install disk, the machine whirs for a moment, and then ejects the disk with no error message. I tested my drive with a different dvd and it works just fine. All of my other software is up to date. Any idea what could be causing this or what I can do?

Clean the bottom of the disk with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth, polish to a shine.
If it's a PowerPC Mac it won't upgrade.
Must be a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk (white with cat like my avatar)
Try holding the c key down with the disk inserted and then reboot.
If all that fails, the disk is likely bad. It happens.
You can chose to copy it and hope the errors get fixed or exchange it for another with Apple.
Insert your Snow Leopard DVD.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app.
In the left side of the window, select the “Mac OS X Install DVD”.
Click “New Image” from the Disk Utility toolbar and select where you want to save the temporary image. For “Image Format”, choose “DVD/CD master” and for “Encryption”, choose “none”.
The image extension in the “Save As” box will be .cdr (this is what you want) — click “Save”.
Once the temporary image is created, it will show up on the left side of the Disk Utility window. Select it.
Insert a blank dual-layer DVD
Click “Burn” from the Disk Utility toolbar. -
File Sharing Keeps Crashing on Snow Leopard Server
I use a Snow Leopard mini server running OS 10.6.4. The server works as a file sharing hub for my network. Lately, something strange has been happening. On several occasions, the network file sharing function has suddenly gone dead with no warning -- in other words, open file sharing connections are suddenly cut off, and when I try to re-access the server to reinitiate file sharing, it lists no drives available for browsing.
When I restart the server, the problem seems to resolve itself (temporarily), and the server gives no indications of anything having gone wrong. The other weird part is that this problem is exclusive to Mac systems trying to access the Mac server. In other words, PC computers on my network are still able to connect and share files without any trouble, even after the apparent stall has occurred.
Any ideas? It is getting annoying to have to restart the server every few days. Thanks!tibbs01 wrote:
I have a Mac Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and experience a similar problem - Windows clients, XP Vista and 7 alike can not access the server, This was all fine before going to Snow Leopard.
To fix it , I switch SMB sharing off and back on again, then it works fine. This happens several times per day, I am so far unable to detect pattern or even any log entry that might shed light on it. This is a big problem for me, as I have approx 40 windows clients accessing that server and it's shares.
There are so many post all over the internet about SMB and Snow Leopard having problems, Is Apple aware of this , has anyone heard back from them about fixing this ?
Apparently there's a major problem in Snow Leopard using a version of Samba that is not compatible with Windows 7. I think there are workarounds - a search on Google should help.
However, the original poster was complaining of a problem with AFP, which is what I'm having a problem with as well. If anybody has the solution ... -
Backup keeps crashing with Snow Leopard
Anyone still using Backup, the Apple program, to still back up certain smaller files to iDisk? I was until I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now all of a sudden Backup just crashes every time I try to use it.
I use TIme Machine and that's great for local backups, but insist on backing up important files (like Quicken) to a remote sight in case of a major catastrophe. Any ideas how to back up to iDisk automatically if Backup no longer works?Hey - I have the same issue with Backup and iPhoto.
I understand what you wrote about Backup's limits - though I can't see any logic in such a limit. Backup needs to look at file sizes or dates and transport them to a destination. Regardless of size (?!)
In the case of IPhoto I've made the same mistake and upgradet iDisk, only to find out that Backup 3.1.2 reports a "no space left on the device". As I understand the iPhoto Library folder it's just a fancy look for a 100% regular folder with sub-folders and jpg files.
None of my (single) pictures are >90mb .. so while they take up a lot of space when counted all-in-all, I can't see that as a reason for Backup to reject the upload/transport ?
I realize it would take quite some time to upload my 13Gb picture collection in the first batch, but was counting on Backup to only upload pictures with newer dates in the future. So uploading a couple of hundred mb's once in a while would be very much achievable on a household upstream connection.
My questions:
1. Why upgrade a iDisk to 40+ Gb if Apple have no method of backing up peoples images ? Everybody have digital cameras and if the iPhoto Library folder is percieved as one big file .. then 90mb is a very very unusable limit !
2. Can any of you name a transporter software/ftp thingie that will do as described above ?
3. Can iDisk handle the iPhoto Lib if you manually drag it up ? (just to know if we're only searching for an alternative to Backup 3.1.2. or to iDisk itself)
Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro keeps beeping during Snow Leopard upgrade
I am excitedly moving into the Mac world and have had my MacBook Pro for almost a year and wanting to move to Lion. I ordered the Snow Leopard disc from Apple and finally loaded it tonight. All went well for a while then the screen went grey and just began beeping (3 short beeps over and over and over). The disc won't eject, and all seems frozen except for the beeping. PLEASE, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spotlight keeps "indexing iPhone" since upgrading to Mavericks
The Spotlight indexed my MacBook Pro's hard drive once after upgrading to Mavericks. That is fine. But when I went to Spotlight to search for something after that, I often find that the Spotlight was "indexing iPhone". It didn't take long for it to finish but is it normal? And what is indexing iPhone anyway?
This is getting annoying!
The computer goes to sleep. I can wake it by pressing a key on the wireless keyboard. It thinks for a while. It asks me for the password. I can't enter the password because during that time the keyboard has disconnected from the computer. I have no choice but to hard restart the computer.
Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks in advance. -
Spotlight keeps indexing external set to Privacy
After completing a SuperDuper backup Spotlight started indexing all of its contents ('30 hours remaining...'). To stop this I dragged the backup image into Spotlight's Privacy panel, but to no avail. To stop the indexing I had to do a force unmount of the external drive. Somewhere else I read that as soon as the drive is dragged into the Privacy folder Spotlight's indexing stops. Is this how it is supposed to work?
Thanks in advanceWell, this time immediately after SuperDuper started doing its backup operations I went to Spotlight's Privacy panel and added the SuperDuper image there, and Spotlight didn't index anything. So I suppose this is the way it should work.
