Spotlight reindexing EVERY TIME !
I have an issue with Spotlight - especially when I fire up my Firewire drive (2 partitions) and the Bootcamp partition - it seems to index them everytime I turn it on - I understand it's meant to do that a bit but it seems to start from scratch and takes yonks to get it going....is it easier to turn Spotlight off completely ? I've tried taking out the stuff not needed to search, but it doesn't affect the indexing.
Hi Paul
Look at this article I just found from [AppleInsider|http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/07/firstbuilds_of_mac_os_x_10_5_1_pack_over_two_dozenfixes.html] looks like maybe a fix in 10.5.1....?
and the [Latest Mac OS X 10.5.1 build fixes Finder data loss issue|http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/12/latestmac_os_x_10_5_1_build_fixes_finder_data_lossissue.html]

Continuous Spotlight reindexing of Time Machine/Capsule backup
I have recently noticed that Spotlight tries to reindex the mounted image of the backup on the desktop and that prevents the machine from going to sleep, etc., as I have 113 GB of data being backed up and it is done wirelessly to a Time Capsule. So, anyway to prevent it from doing this? Just using Spotlight preferences to do this doesn't work as the next time it mounts for backup the reindexing starts again.
It is very annoying.I have done that a myriad times, but all of a sudden the problem went away on its own. For a week or two it was really bad.
The Privacy tab solution is a temporary one until the .dmg file gets unmounted, then it is like you never used the privacy tab to exclude that volume because the next time the volume gets mounted it is like starting from scratch. That's why I made the original post. -
Spotlight crashes every time I try to type something
Well when I satrt typing in spotlight the toolbar at the top chrashes and it gets rebooted, but same problem occurs over and over again. I have tried to index it a million times, killed things in sudo and other quests but nothing have helped so far. I got plenty of RAM and HDD space with good speed so I don't think thats the problem.
Sincerely,
ThomasNo that did not work , Thank you

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!
Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS). -
Spotlight not working under 10.6.6- reindexed several times.
Spotlight is not showing up results as expected, and when searching inside folders, doesn't throw any results and keeps on searching endlessly. I've reindexed several times and this started happening only after 10.6.6.
any suggestions…
NeeravI had this issue. My Spotlight Icon was not showing up in the menu bar, however, searching within folders seemed to be working just fine. I did everything under the sun.
+Repaired Disk Permissions+
+Used Onyx & MainMenu+
+Terminal Commands+
+Replaced files+
Most of these older solutions did not work, however, because 10.6 handles Spotlight so differently.
*Here is what worked for me:*
I noticed that using Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app) to restart the SystemUIServer would refresh the menu bar, but not make Spotlight reappear in the menu.
I then opened up Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) and saw that SystemUIServer gave the following error:
+Error loading /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search: dlopen(/System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search, 265): Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Calculate.framework/Versions/A/Calculate+
+Referenced from: /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search+
+Reason: image not found+
From that I deduced that there must be a problem with the Calculate.framework, because it wasn't loaded and SystemUIServer was trying to access it. Needless to say, after checking out the Calculate.framework (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Calculate.framework/) I found that it was completely empty. That didn't seem right.
I got onto another macbook running OS X 10.6.6 and copied the Calculate.framework. After replacing the empty one with the healthy one, I restarted SystemUIServer from Activity Monitor and WHALA, it works again.
Hope this was helpful. -
Spotlight indexing of Time Capsule - feature or bug?
I understand why backups are indexed: the ability to use Spotlight from within Time Machine is a fantastic feature. But the method by which this index is created does not make sense where a Time Capsule is in use (or indeed most networked storage, but since many configurations are officially unsupported let's just keep this discussion focused on the officially approved one!).
Typically (from my sample size of 1), a complete system backup is of the order of 100GB; however, after the initial backup is complete, Time Machine only needs to copy modified files to the backup drive, which can lead to very small and fast subsequent backups: unchanged files are created in-situ with a hardlink to the existing copy on the backup drive.
A problem arises when, after a backup completes, Spotlight attempts to index the changes to the backup drive: it appears that it inspects every unindexed file (involves transfer to the local machine) including such unmodified/hardlinked files. This therefore gives rise to a situation where a backup that writes only a few kilobytes to the backup drive results in Spotlight reading hundreds of gigabytes from that drive.
Even with a throughput of 100Mbps, this would take close to an hour and a half (in reality, especially over wireless networks, it takes many hours); meanwhile Time Machine reaches its next scheduled backup and cannot proceed until Spotlight has finished indexing.
Altogether, this appears to render Time Capsules useless for system backup (unless one is connected via gigabit ethernet, which is neither a requisite nor a desirable constraint). One does not need to look far to see how many users this issue is affecting.
In previous versions of OS X, one could workaround this issue by disabling Spotlight indexing of the backup volume; however, since Lion (or Snow Leopard?), this is no longer possible.
To my mind, the design is flawed - some might call it a "bug": there should be a more efficient method of indexing drives, especially networked ones (ideally avoiding the redundancy of reindexing hardlinked files). At worst, Time Machine could provide to Spotlight all the metadata it requires for the entire backup: thus avoiding the need for Spotlight to read such files from the backup volume.
...or have I misunderstood something?nickety wrote:

That's not the reason; Time Machine requires the indexing in order to work, especially for the "Star Wars" display.

That's not normal; you have something else wrong, possibly a corrupt index. See the pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Not really. The backups were still indexed; you just didn't get a message. See the note in item 2 here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8991.html -
Spotlight reindex, mds crash
Hello,
I was searching a lot of stuff and I didn't found any resonable solution.
It starts about the last update to 10.9.1. (17.12.).
Main problem is like this: every time I open a lid on my AriMac, spotlight is starting reindexation.
I found some lines in console about mds crash report with information in it:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

mds is the metadata server that is used primarily by Spotlight. That file probably appeared because mds crashed. It's possible the file should have been invisible but lost its invisible status, but of this I'm not sure. If you look in the console log for the date and time when that file was created you may find a log entry. If not in the console log perhaps in one of the other logs such as the crash reporter logs.
Kappy,
I searched for mds-crash-state in the console, system, and other logs, and could find no reference to it at all. However, searching for just mds yielded the following on July 10, 2008, in the crashreporter.log:
Thu Jul 10 08:04:30 2008 crashdump[3522]: crashdump started
Thu Jul 10 08:04:33 2008 crashdump[3522]: Started writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mds.crash.log
Thu Jul 10 08:04:36 2008 crashdump[3522]: Finished writing crash report to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mds.crash.log
The file called mds-crash-state in my Macintosh HD folder has a creation date of July 10, 2008, 8:04 AM in Get-Info, so the above is almost certainly connected to that event. But there is no indication that it exited abnormally, as far as I can see. There are no more entries on the 10th at all, and no more references in any of the logs to mds, so this appears to be a one-time event? The file I have detected is a "state" file, not a log file, and it is stored in a different location.
As always, thanks for your help.

not sure why, but spotlight seems to be reindexing every few minutes....haven't added any new software
wife had an issue with a bad CompactFlash card downloading images from her camera, but can't see the connection between the two (if there is one)
any ideas?
patrick laffertyHello:
Take a look at system preferences>spotlight. Time Machine is automatically excluded, I think, but indexing external hard drives can cause what you describe (I exclude both of mine from indexing).

Spotlight reindexing on bootup
Can anyone tell me why Spotlight would suddenly want to reindex my startup disc and an offboard drive from scratch every time I start or restart my iMac? I had two hard freezes recently while a Bittorrent client (Transmission) and Toast 8 were running. Fixes to once again make the indexes persistent would be appreciated.
For testing purposes, see what happens with spotlight in a new account. If it's OK there then look in
Users/yourname/Library/LaunchAgents . Is there anything there that doesn't belong?
All I seem to have there is several com.apple.folderactions.... .plists
(And also check in System Preferences>Log in items.)
Then go to Activity Monitor in Utilities and see if that process, whatever it may be, is still running there.
Spotlight might be getting hung up on one of these, if they exist. -
Slow backup (and spotlight problems) after time machine restore
Hi All,
After having some shaky moments with my macbook pro's internal hard drive, I have now installed a new one. I am running the latest version of 10.6.8.
The machine is running fine after a restore from my Time machine backup, but there are a few problems:
1) Time machine is now making a new backup - it looks like it wants to do a complete backup, which is ok as I have the space. However, after about 30 mins it has completed 156k and is now running at about 1k a second (or less).
2) Spotlight is reindexing, but appears to be stuck on "Estimating indexing time".
3) I tried opening mail, and it said it had to convert my mailbox - it got part way through the number of messages and stopped. I force quite, I'll try that one again later.
Any ideas for 1) and 2) above? I can't see any odd looking messages in the console...
CheersSo... thought I'd update this since it may help someone else later...
The time machine backup completed fine in the end - it looked like it wanted to do a complete backup but I think it just did a delta in the end.
The spotlight reindex ran for about another 6 hours, judging by the console messages.
However, now I'm trying to run mail - and it's stuck on importing the mailbox - it got to 14157 of 57904 and stopped there. The "time remaining" is increasing by about 5 minutes every minute....
I've seen the following message in the console, which I also saw while it was trying to do the spotlight index last night:
NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body
Anyway, I'll let it run and see what happens... -
Beach ball every time iMovie opens
I get the beach ball every time I open iMovie. Have repaired permissions and verified the disk to be OK. I have the latest 9.07 iMovie.
Any advise to fix this frustrating experience ?Hi
How much free space is there on You STAR-UP (Mac OS) Hard disk ? (others do not count)
Did You try.
• Trashing iMovie pref files (while iMovie is NOT running)
• Repair Preferences
Else
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• No File Vault on - Important
• NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
• Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
• Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
• And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery (if a PowerBook)

ITunes Makes Me Log in Every Time I Open It
iTunes v. 12.0.1.26 and Yosemite updates recently installed. 2012 27" iMac
iTunes makes me log in every time I open it. I thought the problem was fixed in THIS THREAD and it was a very helpful set of instructions by Linc but the problem keeps recurring.
I reposted the question in that thread, but since the thread is marked as solved I'm afraid no one will see it. So I'm reposting here.
Situation:
Upon opening iTunes I get messages popping up telling me to
Sign in to iTunes to use this computer for automatic downloads
Sign in to iTunes for iTunes Radio to use autodowload
Sign in to iTunes to check for downloads
(repeat of) Sign in to iTunes to use this computer for automatic downloads
Sign in to use iTunes Store
These happen one after another, rapidly. Every time. I called Apple help as well and they didn't have any further help.
I've repaired permissions, trashed my plist for iTunes from my Library, done all of Linc's instruction in the other thread.Back up all data before proceeding.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
IPhoto crashes every time I try to repair thumbnails
After using CleanMyMac 2 the other day to save space on my MacBook Pro running Mavericks and latest install of iPhoto, a lot of thumbnails in iPhoto now appear rotated or squished. I want to rebuilt my thumbnails, but every time I do so by opening iPhoto and holding option-command, iPhoto runs for a few minutes but then crashes. I've Repaired Permissions and Repaired Databases with no problems, but they don't help the thumbnail issue. Nor does repairing permissions for the entire computer. Any tips?
Thanks!A.
"CleanMyMac" is a scam. The developer's instructions don't completely remove it. Follow those instructions, then do as below.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Repeat with this line:
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
B.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -

Quit Safari if it’s running. Then select
▹ Force Quit…
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Safari may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
Step 1
In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Select the Safari icon in that folder and press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in the Info window labeled Open in 32-bit mode. Uncheck it, if checked. Close the Info window and the Applications folder.
If Adobe Flash Player is installed, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If you still have problems, quit Safari again.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
rm -fr $TMPDIR../C/com.apple.Safari
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal. Launch Safari and test.
Step 3
If Safari still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (some may not exist):
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Internet Plug-Ins
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
(Note: you are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”)
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings and bookmarks will be lost. The default set of bookmarks will be restored. Delete them all.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that may have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in step 1. Stop here and post again.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select
File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each step to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 3, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place.

Lightroom 3 - Flickr Publish Bug
I am experiencing an issue where when I publish images to Flickr they immediately show up as "Modified Photos to Re-Publish" and will not ever move to the "Published" section even though I have not changed a thing. Anyone have any ideas as to what I
