Spry menu changes - How to:

First. I'm not a developer or programmer. I'm a hacker (dabble unknowingly by trial and errororor).
I looked deeply for how to change font characteristics and found nothing helpful except comments that it can't be done or BEWARE! Horse puckey! Don't believe that all you can change is font, background and color.
I needed to change the font size and width of the bars in my Spry menu. This is how I did it and the details are for others to trial and error it themselves.
I created a page with a Spry menu (horizontal for me) and populated it to three levels. The first time you use Spry it will copy the necessary files into your directory and create a .css file you can see in that directory. You can open up the Spry menu and see the .css parameters, which isn't helpful at all. You can, also, open up the .css file as a window pane, which is what you need.
Next, open up your browser and use it to open the file you are using for test purposes (the .html, not the .css file). Now you can get an idea of what your file will look like in a browser on the Internet. Change back to the Dreamweaver window. Make sure you have the "SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css" (or vertical).
Go to the menu . . . Windows > CSS Style and make sure the CSS Styles tab with ALL selected is showing. If the tab only shows the tree view, drag from the bottom slider bar upward to show both the tree view and the Properties view. Now you're ready.
Do this one step at a time ready to undo any changes you don't like.
Set the window pane to the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css page. Go down the list of Rules in the CSS Panel until you find one that you think might change what you want.
Make the SINGLE change.
Save the change.
Change to the browser and click on Refresh. The changes will show up. Make sure you test each level.
Go back to the Dreamweaver .css pane and either change it back or try the next one.
You will find you can add properties not noted in other discussion or instructions.
I wanted to change both font size and button width. I found that in the Rules I made these changes that worked just fine.
ul.MenuBarHorizontal - I changed the font size from 100% to 60% and got a smaller font universally in the menu.
ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li - I changed the width from 8.2 ems to 16 ems and had wider menu bars universally.
Experiment, try it, be adventurous! Just do it carefully and be ready to undo unwanted changes.

Other than additional specific changes, this was NOT a question for further discussion. It was simply a solution for others to find.

  • Spry menu hover: How to get rid of white box with "false"?

    Hi--
    I'm encountering an IE issue with a Spry vertical menu bar. When the user hovers over the submenu, white frames appear behind the submenu with the word "false" in them. Of course this doesn't happen in Safari or Firefox.
    I was able to fix other similar problems with the menu by following tips posted on another forum. Namely, in the CSS, I disabled an IE hack that caused a white background to appear (menu background has to be transparent on this site). And in the JS, I disabled the following: this.removeIframeLayer(menu);
    Here's the URL: http://www.qic-ec.org
    Below are the css (1) and js (2).
    Any help would be DEEPLY appreciated.
    Thank you
    Jackie

    SpryMenuBar.js
    This file handles the JavaScript for Spry Menu Bar.  You should have no need
    to edit this file.  Some highlights of the MenuBar object is that timers are
    used to keep submenus from showing up until the user has hovered over the parent
    menu item for some time, as well as a timer for when they leave a submenu to keep
    showing that submenu until the timer fires.

  • The flash clip is always in fron of my drop down spry menu. How can i bring my spry menu to the front?

    Hi, Can someone pls help. I could get my dropdown spry menu to be shown as current when it pop outs, it goes behind my flash clip. How can i bring the spry menu to the front?

    well this is the embedded code:
    <object width="400" height="301">
              <param name="wmode" value="transparent">
              <param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />
              <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
              <param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=***&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" />
              <embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9959732&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" width="400" height="301" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed>
            </object>
    So I think that's ok? For the rest, all I changed in the spry menu is that I multiplied the z-index twice (menu and submenus) by 10. But that can't be the problem...

  • Spry menu-change links to carry through all 16 pages?

    I am sure this is easy to do. I just don't know where to begin.
    I have a 16 page website "northeastohioweddingexperts.com.   The side menu is the same on all 16 pages. Its a spry menu. What is the easies way to change the links so it changes through all 16 pages? I  have been doing it the hard way by make a change to the spry menu, and opening each HTML page and pasting the change in that area. I am sure this can be all changed simply in CSS.  So if there is one document that can be altered, or on CSS file that can be changed THIS would be helpful.
    Please point me in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    Tony

    HTML = content.  CSS = styles.  I'm sorry to say that changes to your CSS file won't have any global effect on the links in your HTML code.
    If you had built your site around a DW Template or Server-Side Includes, making site wide changes to menus would be much easier.  See links below for details:

    Server-Side Includes

    If you don't want to start over, use Find & Replace (Ctrl+F) to change hyperlink code in your local site.

  • Spry Menu - Changing width of menu blocks to fill 100% of sidebar

    I have set up Spry menu, see here. http://www.singlesonly.co.uk and then personalised it. All was easy until i attempted to make the menu bar fit the entire width of the side bar, or width of sidebar less the margin. Having spent considerable time reading instructions I can't seem to find an easy way of doing this and can't seem to find an article or specific set of instructions that deals directly with this requirement. The instructions i read don't seem to do what you would expect them to do. All help appreciated. Amber

    Hi Eager Bob,
    Thanks for the pointers (and your time), all of which i have tried, i see my question was not clear and i'm sure im missing something obvious, so i'll re-phrase.
    Basically I can not move the the entire menu at all. I can do just about everything else, such as make it wider/smaller/ etc but not set the initial position. can you point me to a tutorial or Dreamweaver instructions as i can't seem to find what i need to read up on.
    Example of current problem, sort of sorted but only be a visual work around.
    http://www.singlesonly.co.uk/spry_tests.html
    My problem is simply the intial positioning of the entire menu, i want it as close to the left of my web page as possible. To be exact... within my left #sidebar1, i want to center the spry menu, to align with the other content on that menu and then make the spry menu as wide as is possible, to fill as much of that sidebar1 as possible, perhaps even all of it. Unfortunately i can't see in the spry instructions how to move a spry menu further left (or further right) on the page. This is possibly about my lack of indepth CSS skills (which i am working on), although i did expect Spry to have an easy way to set the initial position. Again i am sure i am missing something obvious! Like the part of my brain which deals with CSS positioning.

  • Spry Menu Template question

    I am fairly new to Dreamweaver and am self taught so I am
    trying to learn the best way to do things. I have created a
    horizontal Spry menu on one of my pages in DWCS3. I then copied and
    pasted that code on each page I wanted the Spry menu. How can I now
    go back and make the menu a template so that any changes I make
    will be reflected on every page that has the menu - instead of
    having to change each page every time I change the menu.

    > If I create the whole page as a template, then are all
    of the subsequent
    > pages
    > that use the menu also templates
    You need to read DW's F1 Help about how to make templates and
    spawn child
    pages. If you make the page a template, you would need to
    also specify
    editable regions (regions in which content can be edited on
    the child
    pages).
    If you use includes, you would need to create a text-only
    page in DW, into
    which you paste the content for the menu *ONLY*. Save this
    file as whatever
    filename you like. In any page that you want to use the menu
    you would need
    to a) have the required Spry javascript already in the head
    of the page, and
    b) use INSERT | Server-Side Include, to browse to and select
    the menu
    include file.
    It's a bit tricky. Make sure you get the hang of this using
    test pages
    first, with simple content.

    I'm trying to insert a Spry menu bar in an existing site to replace one previously built with an F-source product. There is a Flash movie above the menu bar. It looks fine in Live View, but when I look at it in a browser, it expands to about ten times its height with only the last menu item visible (out of nine). It also displaces the Flash movie to the left and up. Any idea what's causing this, and how to fix it? Thanks for any help you can provide!
    Live View:
    Browser View:

    Thanks for your help. I tried to add the code above the menu bar (you didn't specify whether to add before the body tag) but it didn't help in either location.
    I've uploaded the page in question to the site. You can access the page via http://www.acsi-cybersa.com/index2.html
    If you back up to the "www.acsi-cybersa.com" URL, you will see a working homepage with an f-source menu that is acting a bit squirrely, and which I am trying to replace with the Spry menu. The URL above "index2.html" is the working replacement for the home page.
    If you can figure out what's happening with the Spry menu and how to fix it, I would be eternally grateful.
    Thanks, Dan

  • How do I change the alignment of a Spry Menu in Dreamweaver

    I know CSS but I can't figure out how to change the entire alignment of a Spry menu to either center in a table or even right align.  I have tried both changing the div alignment and the td alignment and neither one works.  Any ideas?

    See here http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/ and go down to the menu.

  • How do you make a Spry menu view on all pages but only have to change it one place?

    How do you make a Spry menu view on all pages but only have to change it one place? Someone told me maybe I could create a Library item. Any help will be appreciated.

    If your pages all have the same basic design, using a DW Template would be a way to do it...

  • How Do I Create an Editable Spry Menu as part of a Template?

    I am having considerable trouble trying to work out an issue and hope you can help. I have been working on a webpage that I would like to be a template for a fundraiser we are doing. I used a horizontal spry menu and a vertical spry menu. I have two youtube videos that I would like embedded on the page, but I would like the flexibility to change them for different pages. I am trying to make my horizontal and vertical spry menus editable since I am going to be making pages for all items in the menus. I can't seem to set this up correctly. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I have been able to set up editable regions according to my template file, however, when I open the template, I am unable to edit the spry menus or edit the youtube videos. Setting up editable regions also seems to change the look of my page.
    Here is what I would like all the pages to look like: http://www.ymimusic.com/shoppers_guide.html
    But this is how it looks presently when I try to make a page from the template I created following the instructions from the course: http://www.ymimusic.com/test.html
    Since I cannot get the template to work the way I would like, I have not created any links yet. I can send you the template and html page if this will help. Thank you for your help in advance./p>

    Murray,
    I am just opening your responses now. I will try to clarify again. "There's the rub.  This is not a wise choice.  A completely different  menu in each page will not only confuse your visitors, it will drive you  insane.  I strongly suggest you not do this." You were referring to "What throws us off the track is your wish to be able to have a different  menubar in each page. In that case the menubar will need to be in an  editable region."
    What I am simply trying to do is this: If I create a menu that has the following links: About Us, Products, and Contact Us on one page, I want my customers to see the SAME menu on the About Us page, the Products page and the Contact Us page. I am NOT creating different menus on each page. I am trying to automate the format by creating a template that will show these links on each page without me redoing it every page.
    When I attempted this, and created a page from the template, I could not get into the menu to assign links to different pages. Using the above example, If I created my About Us page as the template for the site, then created the Products page from the template, I need the ability to assign the links on the Products page to the About Us and Contact Us pages. The page created from the template does not allow me to do this. I cannot get in to assign the links in the Properties section of Dreamweaver. I even attempted to do the following action in the .dwt file I created:
    Modify > Templates > Make Attribute Editable
    I did this to make the links editable after creating the template. This obviously didn't work.
    To summarize: I do NOT want to make different menus on each page. I simply want to create the two menus you see (one horizontal and one vertical) that will be part of the template. I am trying figure out when I assign the links and How. I will go back and read your notes as well as read the help section (F1) as you requested, however that is why I contacted you; I did not understand what I was doing wrong. I have been working with a course series in Lynda.com that has explained much of what to do up to my problem spot, I simply need to understand the concept.
    Thank you for your assistance.

    You will have to update your spry code (do not know how (possibly in editing the css), but it is causing the problem).
    If you have CS3 or 4, you can use the spry updater extension from -
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/
    Delete your old spry files then apply the spry updater by selecting,  Site - Spry Updater - then select the options req'd.
    Check your page works, modify the spry css as required, checking the site in the browsers after every change.

  • How do I remove the gap above my Spry Menu bar?

    Hi Folks,
    I have an extensive web site which I built over many years and using different programs but have now jettisoned all of thse and work exclusively with Dreamweaver to maintain and improve it myself. To date I have always had to edit each item on each page separately then upload everything to keep my now vast website updated.
    I read that if I made an SSi file for my navigation menu then I do not need to edit it on each separate page of my site so long as I load the pages of my site as .shtml files and insert a Server-Side Includes line in the code of my web pages. All great in theory BUT for some reason which is confounding me there is a gap appearing at the top of the page which is not there on the pages which are not .shtml and have my sprymenu embedded in the code.
    Rather than attach long code here, it might be easier to see the problem on my live pages. So please go to any page of www.dominicnatoli.com to see how the site looks with the spry menu in each page and then go to say www.dominicnatoli.com/2011.shtml to see one of the newly loaded pages which displays the menu from the file www.dominicnatoli.com/includes/navmenu.shtml. interestingly enough if I open the navmenu.shtml alone it displays at the top of the page but whenever I open it as embedded code on my .shtml content pages it does not display at the top of the page.
    I have not completely uploaded all the .shtml files of the site as I have encountered this issue and if I cannot resolve it I will ababndon this course of action and search for another solution so if you click on some of the menu items and it takes you to a dead end that is not in and of itself the problem as not all the .shtml files have been loaded to the server yet.
    I have trawled through the css and code to the best of my "limited" ability and am frustrated as I cannot find my error. There ar epossibly hundreds of errors in the pages as this site has been created using many different programs over decades and one of my reason for trying to do this new menu management is part of my overhaul stragtegy which has stumbled already at the first step. LOL I know we say if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I need to sort out a better way of editin the navigation menu universally rather than having to write code into each menu on each page in order for the nav bar to be consistent wite wide.
    I would really be grateful if one of you gurus can tell me where I am going wrong so I can replicate the solution for the remained of my pages. I am not sure if the problem is in teh navmenu.shtml page and its associated css or in the other shtml page with its much larger css. Thanks for any help you can give me to sort his out.
    I am working on Dreamweaver CC and CS6 ( the latter has an Insert Server Side Includes extension which does not work in CC so I tend to use CC for the main updates and CS6 for the SSI stuff.)
    Please let me know if you need any other information or stuff from me. Thanks a lot and
    All the best
    Dominic

    OK Nancy, so I moved the code as you suggested, and it has gone back to showing the nav menu formatted BUT still with a gap at the top.
    Here is the new code for the page. BTW it only has 463 lines

    /* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
    /* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.

  • How do I get banner & Spry Menu Bar to appear on every page?

    Hi,
    I am a new user of Dreamweaver CS6 an a relatively new user to website development in general.
    I just followed along through Davide Powers "Creating your first website" tutorial series and found it to be very helpful.  I made it through all six parts and managed to get the Check Magazine sample website up and running.  I now want to use what I learned to creat my own site, and I am stuck already.
    The tutorial does a great job of explaining how to setup a Spry Menu Bar to use for navigation.  The tutorial, however, only shows how to put this Spry Menu Bar on the main index.html page.  For my actual site, I would like my navigation bar (and my banner) to appear on every one of my pages.
    Can anyone here tell me where I can find instructions on the best way to do this?
    My navigation requirements are very simple.  I just want a common banner with navigation buttons to appear at the top of every one of my pages.  The Spry Menu Bar that was created in the tutorial would work great for me assuming I can find a relatively simple way to get it (along with my banner) to appear at the top of every one of my pages.
    If it is very complicated to get it to appear on every page (or would require a large time investment in learning advanced techniques), then I would consider passing on the Spry Menu Bar and trying to setup my navigation in a simpler (if more old-fashioned) way.
    Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    If a small, 4-5 page site,  make a prototype page with all your columns, headers, footers, menus, etc...  and go to  File > SaveAs index.html,  and then File > SaveAs > page1.html,  and then File > SaveAs page2.html, etc...
    Or you can save your prototype page as a Dreamweaver Template (.dwt file).  Add editable regions for stuff that will change from page to page.  Everything outside editable regions is common to all site pages. Then use your Template to spawn site pages.  File > New > Page from Template, index.html, page1.html, page2.html, etc....    DW Templates are nice site management tool.  But before you use them, read all you can about them in F1 Help as they can be a little tricky to master.
    Last but not least, look at Server-Side Includes. They're a huge time saving feature. I use them on every site I build.

  • Is it possible to change the height of Spry Menu Bar items?

    I'm new to websites and have been trying to understand the CSS of the Spry menu bar. I've managed to put a horizontal menu bar in place and with the help of some previous discussions in this forum, have changed the colours of the menu items and have even managed to centre the text - Thanks!
    However, I really would like to have a smaller menu bar - height wise.
    I've tried reducing the default height of the menu bar items by adding a height and by reducing the font size and padding. The results have been varied.  In Firefox and in Dreamweaver's 'live view' there is still a thin line showing underneath my horizontal menu which is the background colour of the div my menu sits in.  In IE there is a similar 'chunk missing' from the bottom of the items.
    Is this something that can be done?  I've seen lots of help on how to change the width of the items, but have not found any which suggest that the height can be changed.
    Gill

    Sure. You just need to be thorough. Keep in mind that in a Spry Menu Bar you are making the link-text in the list-items block elements, so you will want to change the line-height of the a element. Pick style selectors in the css stylesheet that end in a, with or without an additional class (a.classhere), and play with the line-height.
    Another attribute you can consider is the difference in height between Cap and lower case and All caps. You can usually get away with a smaller line-height and a smaller font-size with all caps, because there are no descenders on the text to require more line-height. Keep in mind also that when you state a line-height, your text will center vertically in the line-height, as far as I know, so you might even get away without top and bottom padding.

  • How to get rid of the line encasing the left hand side of a vertical spry menu?

    Hi,
    I have created a vertical spry menu bar. It all works but there is a line like this [  encasing the left hand side of the menu. Does anyone know how to get rid of this?
    Thanks!

    Line 73 in your Spry css calls for a border
    ul.MenuBarVertical{
        border: 1px solid #ccc;
    Either remove the rule or change the #ccc to #fff
