SQL Developer 3.0.03 Code Editor Save Actions missing from menu
I had just gotten a new notebook and installed latest version of Oracle SQL Developer 3.0.03. Seems Auto Save settings are enabled by default. I am prompted each time I switch off from SQL Dev to another app or window to Save the SQL code I am testing. I don't want to necessarily save it each time so I have to save or cancel each time I switch windows. I checked the documentation Help menu and it directed me to the Code Editor section > Save Actions menu to adjust settings. This category does not exist (or is not visible for me) to check settings and make changes. I am Admin on machine and installer of the app so not sure if it is some security setting I am not aware of. Or is this the wrong Help documentation for this version?
This version is much different from older version I was using. Any thougts on this before I remove and re-install an older version?
Thanks,
Joe
many thanks for your reply jim. i see the settings for 'prompt for save file on close'. this is checked by default and that is fine. if i have a sql worksheet open, as soon as i switch to another window (i.e. visual studio app), i get prompted to save the file. that is the strange behavior i've been seeing with this version.
i will try to update to 3.0.04 and see if that resolves. i appreciate your help.

SQL Developer: Failure -Test failed: IO Error: Got minus one from a read call
Hi,
I am sorry I know this is probably most frequently asked question, but I have no idea what I should be searching for.
I looked up the error above to see if i could find a solution, but unfortunately I did not.
Right Let me start of with I am a Total Noob.. well it terms of having to install Oracle 11g myself.
In my University they hosted a database, and assigned us a User & pass thats how I have been using SQL Developer,
but since I am not longer a university student. I need to use Oracle Database.
So I downloaded Oracle 11g Enterprise Installed it on my laptop that i don't use much.
Name the Database: Rudu
It did all the installation, and seemed to have succeeded, I went on to the https://localhost:1158/em (Though am not sure why em? whats the deal with that? I thought it would be https://localhost:1158/Rudu) anyways....
Logged in using the System user.
Went to Users and created a user called: RUDUHR
Thought yeah its working... went on to my other laptop opened up SQL Developer.
Created Connection with the following Settings
Con Name: RK
User: RUDUHR
Pass: TEST
Con Type: Basic
Role: Default
Hostname: 192.168.0.8
Port: 1158
SID: Rudu
It don't work though Why is that??????
192.168.0.8 is laptop that has oracle 11g installed and running.
I even tried using SYSTEM user to connect, but same error
also tried changing SID to em, it made no difference I keep getting the error Status: Failure -Test failed: IO Error: Got minus one from a read call
So ya am clueless... LOL I only know how to create tables and stuff not how to configure a Database.
and just so you know I did forward the port on me router to correct laptop. It don't work though Why is that??????
192.168.0.8 is laptop that has oracle 11g installed and running.
It is because you don't read documentation.
1158 is the default port for Enterprise Manager
1521 is the default port for Sqlnet.
Your port number is incorrect.
Needless to say, you can create your tables in EM too.
As per the Forums Etiquette post (first link when you get to this page) it is recommended you read documentation before asking Yet Another Doc Question.

If i copy & paste and run the same update from SQL Worksheet i get no error (1 rows updated).
I have no problem to update other column type (date, number) but only with type NVARCHAR2.

Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.5 Unable to save file
I edit content of a column in a table I get this when trying to save change:
Unable to save TABLE ... ("Failed to save changes").
This error disappear when I do the same task in Oracle SQL Developer 1.1.3.
Please help me!when I run:

commit succeeded.
AND the command which was cutting ORA_ROWSCN predicate:
UPDATE "OWNFTS"."BONGDATHAMSO"
SET LTDKQURL = 'http://soccernet.espn.go.com/fixtures?league=ita.1&cc=4716'

+1 rows updated+
+commit succeeded.+

The option to Save is missing from action list
Hi,
I am trying to create an action button to Save my file but unfortunately, it seems to be missing from the action list, as shown below:
Can I add the File>Save or File>Save as to this list? If not how can I save this file?
Another important issues is that I will need to be able to save it on both an iPad and a Microsoft based PC, do I have to do anything different?
Thanks you in advance.
CarolineI believe this is on purpose. Unless a script is installed on the local
machine of the user you can't save the file silently, ie without their
consent. And such a script is not going to work on iOS devices, only on
desktops. -
SQL Developer: How do I copy data with Column Headers from the output grid?
Hello,
I am using Version 2.1.1.64.
I run a SQL query, I get the results grid in the "Query Result" window down below. Say I get 10 rows returned, with 5 columns.
I want to Copy this entire grid, plus the column headers/names, to the clipboard. So I can paste it under the original query to document the results of that query.
I can't find any way to do this. I can copy/paste the results grid, but it doesn't copy the headers.
The only way I see to do it is to go through numerous steps to Export to a TXT file, then paste that. Unfortunately, that is a lot of wasted steps if I need to do this over and over, plus, the output gets pasted in an ugly format with double quotes, etc.
It seems like the simplest functionality is to copy/paste the entire results grid, and of course you might the headers. Why is this so complicated/impossible to do?
(I believe Toad has the same problem. DBArtisan allows you to copy/paste the entire results, plus headers, though.)
Any assistance would be appreciated!
Thanks,
JohnAh, ok...
I had tried that before, and it didn't work, it seemed to copy the path of filename I was using. But I think that was because I had clicked on a Column Header first, and it had asked me if I wanted to filter. I think then it lost track that it was in the grid. It's a little flukey.
What I did now was to click on an individual cell in the output, then hit CTRL-A to select all, then hit SHIFT-CTRL-C. That gives me exactly what I want.
Thanks very much for your quick solution, I appreciate it!

Error Code 150:30 - Photos Missing From My Catalog and LR Can't Load Them
LightRoom 5.5 stopped functioning and cannot find the catalogs or files I was using for the last several days. I receive Error Code 150:30 and am advised to contact Adobe Support, though I can't seem to find a direct link to do so. Is the issue possibly related to licensing issues? I purchased a copy of LR 5 from B&H and later received two licenses through purchases of Leica cameras. I am trying to get myself setup on LR, but seem to be locked out until I can reestablish the links to my photo files which seem to be grayed out. Thanks for any help or guidance. Robert

Save As missing from drop down menu.
I don't have the Save As option in my file dropdown menu. I would like to save pages documents as word, I am unable to check that box its grayed out. if anyone can let me know how to resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it. It only has a Save option and that does not allow me to save as word.
Before "saving" as Word I advise you to save the document in its native format, .pages. The conversion the Word isn't perfect. Then to get a Word document you have to Export to Word, either from the File menu or from the Share menu in Pages.

How to create save actions in SQL Developer 1.5?
Hi,
I am trying to create a save action in SQL Developer, which shall execute "an external tool" I already added.
I choose "Code-Editor" -> "save actions". I want to add an action, but there are 3 predefined actions and there is no possibility for me to add another. Is there a way for me to add a save action, as it is possible in eclipse?
What I am trying to do is, I want to trigger an external sql formatter. The sql formatter, which is built in, doesn't fit my needs and the way I can configure it, is very sparse. Therefore I want to use an external tool do to this - and I want it to be executed after saving the document.
Greetings,
DanielRight click on the table and select "Export Data": default format is INSERT statement.
Example of generated SQL:

Unable to save in SQL Developer..
Screenshot I work for an enterprise support desk, and one of our clients uses SQL Developer. When he goes to save, he is unable to choose a location. If he clicks a directory on the left nothing populates, he cannot type in a directory at the top, and if he clicks save, the window flashes but no file is saved anywhere. Does any one have any idea what could cause this or a solution to this problem.
I do not know much about SQL Developer, one of the 1300 users we support uses it.
From what I understood while troublehsooting, he is unable to save ANYTHING. Mostly he writes scripts in a workspace on the right side of the window, but I am not sure of the correct term.
When he clicks the directories, we single clicked, double clicked, triple clicked, doesn't matter how many times we clicked, nothing from that directory populated. For example, if he tried to save to the dekstop and double clicked the deskop icon on the left of the save window, no items or folders that exist on his desktop populate in the navigation panel on the right.
You cannot save to a local hard drive because you cannot save anywhere.... you cannot decided whether you want tos ave to a network location or a local location because you cannot navigate to where you want to save in the first place, hence why we are having this discussion.

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
AddVMOption -Xms50M
AddVMOption -Xmx384M
AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.

&& Substitution Variable in Package Body using SQL Developer
Hi Folks,
I've moved over to working to in SQL Developer (its a very early version - 1.0.0) from a combination of SQL*Plus command line and a text editor. I'm trying to get this upgrgraded, but I think the question will be the same with a newer version anyway.
I am creating a package, and in the package body I have some &&my_var substitutions that I was previoulsy prompted for when calling the .sql from the command line SQL*Plus. I need this as the variable needs to be different for the development and live environment.
When working in SQL Developer, I can load the package body from Connection->Packages->My Package->My Package Body, and click the edit button to edit the code, however, when I click the Compile button in the top of the window my code error's because of the substituion variablle. An example is:
CREATE OR REPLACE
PACKAGE BODY MY_PACKAGE AS
PROCEDURE MY_PROCEDURE
BEGIN
my_variable := &&my_function_from_live_or_dev_database
END MY_PROCEDURE
Can anyone tell me if there is a way of defining a compiler variable within the IDE widow while editing a package body stored in the database, without manually copying the code into the Worksheet and running it as a script?
Thanks,

Thanks for the reply, the code was just quickly typed to show the sort of thing I am doing, it wasn't actual code form my project.
I've come from a C background so what I would have done would be create a #define and changed to when on live or development - or passed the variable to the build environment from the IDE or makefiles and the change would have reflected through my whole project.
What I want to be able to do is alter a definition of some sort that will reflect throughout my whole project, so I can change it in one location to minimize code changes before going live. I don't really want to be prompted at all. On one system it needs to be DEV_10 and on the other it needs to be LIVE_10.Is there a possibility to elimiante this difference at all?
For example if DEV_10 is the oracle schemauser on the development database and LIVE_10 would be the one on the production system. THen you could just remove all references to the schema from your code.
IF you are already connected to this schema, then you don't need to specify the schema name anymore.
example
instead of
create or replace package dev_10.myPackage
...you can simply use
create or replace package myPackage
...If needed you can alter the cuurently connected user just before you run the script.
alter session set current_schema = LIVE10;
create or replace package myPackage
...This would be a different working window in the developer (script worksheet, instead of direct pl/sql editor).
Substitution variables are allowed there. -
Syntax highlighting not working on PL/SQL developer tool
Hello,
Syntax highlighting is not working on PL/SQL developer tool using the beautifier. When I go set Syntax highlighting parameters (from EDIT>PL/SQL Developer Beautifier Options > User Interface> Editor> Syntax Highlighting ) and click apply, the changes are not reflected in SQL code in the SQL window. Other feautures in the beautifier such as Fonts, Window types are working fine.
Please help me with this issue.
Thanks!!
ShreejitAs this is not an Oracle related question (let alone Oracle SQL or PL/SQL), and as you've been given a link to the relevant website... I'll now lock this thread.
