SQL Developer 3.0 EA2 quick feedback (outdated there is an EA3 now)

Ok, this post is outdated. Once I've tried EA3 I'll give my feedback again, hopefully not just before EA4 or the final release is released.
Since I don't see another way to give feedback about the new SQL Developer EA release, here a brief summary of my findings so far.
1. The "new and improved" SQL History is very very very slow
2. Importing my 5Mb sql history during the migration takes > 1 day, I've aborted this operation. This might be a "show stopper" for some people once the 3.0 version is released.
3. I'm missing a "keep alive" option for connections, to prevent firewalls from closing the connection while idling (true, this won't prevent firewalls from doing so when you are executing a long running query, but you should not run those from sql developer ;)
3.a. an unexpectedly closed connection shouldn't hang up the entire sql developer instance, not really needed if 3 is fixed
4. I love the schema browser, but would love if you could "open and close" the object in the same way as you can in the connection browser
4.a. It would be nice if you could default to a certain schema in the schema browser for a given connection. Perhaps a bit like what's possible with the following plugin: http://www.javaforge.com/project/schemasel
5. I love the new unload data feature, but would be nice if it still had the option to unload to clipboard
5.a. XLS export of big number columns looses precision, for example a number(38) column with all digits used.
And did I mention that the SQL History is very very very slow? This is what prevents me of using the 3.0 SQL Developer, even though I really love the schema browser, which is a great enhancement.

I believe excel only holds 15 digits of precision.
Edited by: 823006 on Jan 18, 2011 8:14 AMThen it would be nice if you can define the "excel type" of each column. So you can make this number a "string" in the XLS.

  • SQL Developer 4.0 EA2 -- Cannot use OpenLDAP with LDAP connect option

    Hi,
I've got OpenLDAP setup to work with my Oracle clients, to serve up TNS connect strings, in lieu of having tnsnames.ora files scattered about hundreds of servers.
This is working fine with 10g/11g, both full and instant clients, no problem.
Now, I'm trying to configure SQL Developer 4.0 EA2 working with it, as well.
When I attempt to do so, I'm able to select the "LDAP" option in "Connection Type", and the "LDAP Server" drop down list is correctly populated with my LDAP server, from ldap.ora.
However, when I select it, I get the following error:
Status : Failure -[LDAP: error code 32 - No Such Object]
Now, I've done some research, and I monitored the slapd.log file, which shows me the following:
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 fd=16 ACCEPT from IP=192.168.125.1:63781 (IP=0.0.0.0:389)
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 op=0 BIND dn="" method=128
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 op=0 RESULT tag=97 err=0 text=
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 op=1 SRCH base="" scope=2 deref=0 filter="(objectClass=orclContext)"
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 op=1 SEARCH RESULT tag=101 err=32 nentries=0 text=
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 op=2 UNBIND
    Sep 18 02:43:35 einstein slapd[2779]: conn=1034 fd=16 closed
Which is a lot more detail, but reflects the corresponding error code, (32 - No Such Object).
After doing some testing with ldapsearch, I've been able to replicate what SQL Developer is doing, and get the exact same error.
    That ldapsearch command is:
    ldapsearch -h einstein -p 389 -c -x -D "" -b "" "(objectClass=orclContext)"
Looking in the slapd.log file, I find an identical error to what is produced from SQL Developer.
Further, the query that SQL Developer wants to do can be successfully done with the following ldapsearch:
    ldapsearch -h einstein -p 389 -c -x -D "" -b "dc=proquest,dc=com" "(objectClass=orclContext)"
So, it seems the problem is with the fact that SQL Developer is not supplying a search base.
I'm no LDAP expert, and I'm really not sure where to turn next....
Is there a SQL Developer option that allows me to set that search base?  Is there a configuration I'm missing on the LDAP server configuration?
    Thanks,
    -Mark

Well, that didn't take long.  I managed to find a solution to the problem.
It comes down to the fact that SQL Developer doesn't supply a search base, and my LDAP server didn't have a default search base defined.
When I edited slapd.conf (the OpenLDAP config file) and added a "defaultsearchbase" parameter, and bounced the LDAP server, everything started to work.
I now have a working configuration with OpenLDAP and SQL Developer.
I'll mark this discussion as closed.

  • Partial solution for sql developer 2.1 EA2 and 9i db

While this bug resolved, I have found a solution to use sql developer 2.1 EA2 and db 9i.
The solution has been to mix two post:
1.- Re: 2.1: Packages and compilation icons
2.- Issue with viewing packages in SQL Developer EA2
The problem seems to be acces to the tables ALL_PLSQL_OBJECT_SETTINGS and DBA_PLSQL_OBJECT_SETTINGS , deleting the reference in the xml file that it's at the post 1, I can see the Packages, Procedures and Functions of db 9i.

In SQL Developer 2.1, the CVS and Perforce extensions will be available through the Check for Updates facility. We will update the Check for Updates this week, so that you can use them with SQL Developer EA2.

  • Where to add Third Party JDBC Driver in SQL Developer 4.1 EA2

In SQL Developer 4.0.3 under Tools - Preferences - Database there was an option to add a  Third Party JDBC Driver so we could use the same tool for a PostgresSQL database.  I cannot find in in SQL Developer 4.1.0.18

I think it happened because I imported settings and connections from a previous installation.
    I removed the C:\Users\username\appdata\SQL Developer\system4.1.0.18.37\ folder.
I've run it now without that and the option is back.
    Thanks!

  • SQL Developer 2.1 general performance feedback

After testing 2.1 for several days, there seems to be a performance regression in the general interface. When running migrations, the application becomes generally unresponsive, unless you click the "run in background" button. By unresponsive, I mean that the dialog only intermittently shows updates as to what it's doing, even though work is continuing behind the scenes.
Also, when running a large script in "execute script" mode (F5), the script output in the lower window lags behind and the actual script window above, where it used to scroll to keep up with the current statement being executed, lags tremendously. Also, the interface is basically unresponsive. Clicking scroll bars doesn't work and the new "ScriptRunner" throbber or cylon scrolling eye thing freezes as well.
Minor problems, but annoying ones. Everything else is great so far, though. Keep up the fantastic work!

Have found out that if the data dictinary inquries drop the the SYS qualifier then we can implement the dolution on metalink. Any chance that this alteration can be implemented? At the moment we cannot use the tool as it is causes too many issues.

  • SQL Developer 2.1 EA2 does not show any procedures

With this version, the Navigation Tree does not show any procedures.

  • Code insight not working in sql developer 1.1.0.23

i just downloaded today. insight options all checked in preferences section. popup time set to less than a second. i get nothing to work in sql worksheet or while modifying a package body.

    Hello,
You should see things from this side sometimes ;-) It's a small team, working hard, very focused! Yes, there is indeed a sense of urgency and we are testing a patch SQL Developer 1.1 at the moment. There is always the battle between wanting to get an updated release to you, the community, quickly, and delaying to ensure what you get is good.
Code insight, performance and many other issues have been addressed in this patch.
As for your other point, we want the tool to be lightweight, easy to install, easy to use with a clear user interface. Perhaps there'll be a new battle when adding features, but that's the goal.

  • Time conversion problem using sql developer

    Hi,
I migrated my data from sql server 2 oracle 10g using the following procedure
1.Created a ODBC from Access-2003 to sql server
    2.Imported the tables
    3. Used Quick migrate feature in SQL DEVELOPER 2 migrate the data to oracle....
Now when i view the data in my forms (oracle forms 10g)...... along with time a date is also appearing in the time field...when actually thrz no date field present
    Ex;
In access and sql server table it is suppose
    9:00 Am
IN oracle forms it is appearing as
    12-4-2010 9:00 Am
can any 1 help me out how to remove this date which is appearing in all the records..??!!!

The datatype of that column is now 'Date'. Anyway, timestamp without date will not be of much help in date calculations. If you do not care about the date portion, simply do a to_char and display as mentioned here: to_char(<your column name>, 'HH24:MI:SS AM'). Ensure that <your column name> datatype is not Character, if it so, you will get ORA-01722 error.

  • Cancelling Query Results in Continually Busy Connection -- SQL Dev 2.1 EA2

    Hello All --
I am running SQL Developer 2.1 EA2 on the Windows 7 Release Candidate (64-bit). I have had issues when canceling long-running queries. Usually what happens is I run something, and realize after a couple of minutes that it's going to take quite a while to run. So, I click the cancel button. Things seem OK, I can resume editing the query. However, when I try to re-run the query (after modifying it) or even just to run an explain plan, I find that I can't re-connect to the DB. I go to the connection pane to try to disconnect and reconnect to the server in question, but when I try to disconnect I keep getting error messages about the connection still being busy, would I like to Retry or Abort? I can keep clicking either of the options ad infinitum with no results.
I have to kill SQL Developer from Task Manager and re-start. I am connecting for the most part to Oracle 10.2.0.4 databases (10g2), some RAC, some stand-alone.
EA2's behavior is better than SQL DEV 1.5.x, which would simply often lock, but this is still frustrating.
    Thanks!

This definitely occurs in 1.5.5 - in my particular case, and this is really strange, if one uses Task Manager to shut down SQLDeveloper because it is just taking forever to get a Data view (via the + expand sign on the side of a given admittedly big table, then clicking on the Data tab), SQLDeveloper freezes. Even if I start a new instance of SQLDeveloper, and ask for a Data view again, it freezes - I've waited as much as 1/2 hour, where as in prior days I'd get a response within say 1 min.
I've even uninstalled and re-installed. Same deal. This is what's the strangest by far. How can it be that SQLDeveloper remembers that a long running query was once canceled even after an uninstall / reinstall ? I could not find anything remotely related to this in the Registry after the uninstall either.
[By the way, if on the other hand, I say SELECT * FROM {table_name}, I get an instant response !]

  • SQL Developer 1.5.4: "Keep alive" setting to keep connections open?

Is there any way to configure SQL Developer 1.5.4 such that it "pings" the server every now then to keep the connection open?
It's very frustrating to be working on a script, step away from it for a while, and have SQL Developer freeze when trying to execute the next SQL statement.
    What can I do?
My workaround--execute a "dummy" SQL statement like "select * from dual;" every now and then to keep a connection open.
    Thanks.
    Dana

I have had this problem till I had a RAM upgrade.
Since I have had the upgrade JDeveloper also responds well.
A way to check is via task manager, if PF usage is more than you physical RAM size it is a indicator that you need more RAM or shut down some application that is hogging memory.
Just to rule out if its not some other problem, have you tried working in SQL Developer running by itself or with one other program.

  • SQL Developer 1.1.3 refuses to acknowledge TNSNAMES file

    I can't figure out what I'm missing.
I've created the system variable TNS_ADMIN and pointed it to "C:\orant\NET80\ADMIN".
I've created the folder "C:\orant\NETWORK\ADMIN" (which should correspond to "$ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN") and placed a duplicate copy of my TNSNAMES.ORA file there.
My other tools (Benthic's Golden Retriever, SQL*Plus, Oracle Reports 6i, etc.) can all see that my TNSNAMES file is in the right place and can use the connection data it contains, but SQL Developer refuses to acknowlegde its existence.
    What more can I do?
I'm using Windows XP Pro with SQL Developer 1.1.3. Our database is Oracle 10g.

I just had the very same problem on linux.
    I had these exports:
    declare -x ORACLE_HOME="/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client"
    declare -x TNS_ADMIN="/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client/network/admin"
    declare -x TWO_TASK="ORACLEXE"
My tnsnames.ora file was in the TNS_ADMIN directory.
After reading your tip I copied the tnsnames.ora-file to /etc and now SQL-Developer suddenly reads the file. I'm happy that I now have a workaround, but this sure is irritating.

  • Is it possible to query software inventory report for Oracle SQL developer installation?

    Hi all
My company requires to generate a report of all kinds of Oracle database access tool. I can find Toad installation from Add/Remove Program and therefore can query for Toad.
However, Oracle SQL developer is using Java. I cannot see an entry for Oracle SQL developer from Add/Remove Program. Is there a way to query inventory for Oracle SQL developer installation?
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards
    Lic

You might be able to use software inventory to report on the version of sqldeveloper.exe.
As the app looks like just a zip you extract to a custom location that might be one method.

  • Announcement: OrindaBuild 5.0 Extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1

    Folks,
OrindaBuild is now available as an extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1.
OrindaBuild creates Java source code to run your existing PL/SQL. This is a non-trivial task and for large projects can consume hundreds on man hours as well as delay development.
OrindaBuild does roughly the same thing that JPublisher does, but writes human readable code, doesn't need SQLJ and doesn't require that you use oracle TYPE objects as parameters for records and arrays.
Another way of thinking of OrindaBuild is "We reach that parts of your application that Hibernate can't".
OrindaBuild is available as extensions for JDeveloper and SQL Developer 1.1. After an unreasonably long gestation OrindaBuild is now available as an extension for SQL Developer 1.5.1 The delay has been caused by us rewriting both the JDeveloper and SQL Developer extensions so that code base has now been unforked. We've also standardized the functionality with that of our recently upgraded Eclipse extension.
To install the demo select 'Help/Check for updates' and then use the 'Add' button to create an update center for Orinda Software using this URL:
    http://www.orindasoft.com/public/sqldev15Center.xml
    Functionality:
The demo version is fully playable, with the only limitation being that it expires after 1 month. You can install the demo multiple times.
In addition to generating Java to call PL/SQL it also allows you to create code to run any SQL statement and access database tables.
OrindaBuild generates code for PL/SQL procedures that take %ROWTYPE and Package Records as parameters. Generated code uses a library. If you buy OrindaBuild you get the source code for the library and end up with a 100% source code solution - i.e. there are no mysterious runtime binary dependencies.
    Limitations:
The extension does not work with versions of SQLDeveloper prior to 1.5.1 (build 5440). We expect you to buy a licence if you deploy generated code in a production environment.
    For more information see
    http://www.orindasoft.com/public/sdefeatures.php4

It is possible that the patch has replaced you shortcut with one pointing to the version within the 11g home. Try running sqldeveloper directly from the executable in the 151 directory.
