SQL Developer on Linux hangs when disconnecting after VPN reconnect

Hello,
I have a problem with using connections after general link failure (Cisco VPN disconnect in my case, lost of route to Oracle DB).
When I reconnect to a VPN and I'll try to disconnect from a previously opened (before general link failure) connection, I need
to wait more than 10 minutes to complete this process. SQL Developer is completely unusable during this time.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to VPN
2. Open connection in SQL Developer to host accessible only by this VPN
3. Restart VPN
4. Try to do anything with this connection (disconnect, execute sql in opened SQL Worksheet, view tables, etc.)
This bug is not new in recent versions, I'm using SQL Developer from over 2 years and this bug was always with me. But if I remember correctly in earlier versions (<3.0) I couldn't reuse the connection to execute sql (hanging SQL Developer for more than 10 minutes) but disconnecting would succeed without a problem.
Maybe SQL Developer should move connection management to separate thread to resolve this issue... or is there another solution?
I'm using SQL Developer 3.1.07.42 @ Linux 3.0.4
For VPN connectivity I use vpnc
When I restart VPN connection I'm loosing TUN interface and all routes.
I have tested this issue on a few versions of SQL Developer on Windows XP, including 3.1.07. There is no problem with disconnecting after vpn failure on Windows.
Maybe I should fill some bug report? When I can do such thing? Metalink?
Best regards,
Irek Slonina

Hi Irek,
Possibly you can resolve this issue by altering the type of the connection that becomes non-responsive upon a VPN reconnect. What type are you currently using: Basic, TNS, etc?
In this forum thread (for Windows, unfortunately, not Linux), although different from your case, the solution used Thick/OCI driver, not Thin/Basic:
Windows 7 VPN
I have no VPN client on Linux (much less vpnc), only Cisco AnyConnect on Win XP, so I cannot test your scenario.

  • Problem in launching newly installed SQL Developer in Linux

    In order to install ORacle SQL Developer for linux, I tried to install JDK 5.0 according to the instruction. I downloaded the files and installed it. But when running the sqldeveloper, I got the error message:
    Error: This product requires a Java(TM) Platform 5.0 runtime.
    You are using 1.4.2 from /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-gcj-1.4.2.0/jre
    Yes, in directory /usr/lib/jvm, there are:
    java-1.4.2-gcj-1.4.2.0, jre, jre-1.4.2, jre-1.4.2-gcj, jre-gcj
    But rpm -qa|grep jdk returned:
    jdk-1.5.0_10-fcs
    How can I resolve this issue?

    you are running SQL Developer using gcc's runtime environment.
    just set JAVA_HOME to the dir where jdk1.5 is installed, then PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH, and it should work.

  • SQL Developer 3.0 hanging on start up in XWindows

    I hate this kind of post but I'm going to have to do it because I've tried everything I can think of... installed SQL Developer last week, and all worked fine. Then today, when I logged into my Linux host, it does not work.
    Upon launching sqldeveloper, I get a splash screen, that only advances two ticks on the progress bar, then hangs up, never to continue or return control back.
    I am using jdk1.7.0_02 with SQL Developer v3.0.04.34 on Oracle Enterprise Linux Server 5.6
    Any ideas or things to check or try?
    When I finally get tired of waiting and hit ctrl-C in the terminal window, I will get a message like this:
    Error: SQL Developer can't recognize the JDK version
    Edited by: joebednarz on Jan 17, 2012 12:38 PM

    Thank you for your response Alfonso...
    No, the JDK was not updated. I neglected to mention that this was not part of an Oracle client install, just SQLDeveloper rpm, therefore, no default JDK came with program.

  • Problems in starting SQL Developer in Linux

    Dear Friends,
    I cannot start SQL Developer in Fedora Core 5 Linux Enviroment. I do not know what exactly is the problem. so Please see the Snap shot the Problem. It Refrains from inspite of it showing as if to Open. On windows it works fine.
    Snap Shot starts here
    [oracle@sydney sqldeveloper]$ sh sqldeveloper
    Oracle SQL Developer 1.0
    Copyright (c) 2005 Oracle Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
    Working directory is /home/oracle/sqldeveloper/jdev/bin
    Ends Here
    Please give me a Solution
    Regards,
    Sydney.

    I had a problem getting it to run in Ubuntu when launching from an XFCE launcher. Basically the file sqldeveloper doesn't work. What I did was to copy sqldeveloper to SQLDeveloper, change the ./ to the full path ( in my case /home/username/sqldeveloper/ ), then launch SQLDeveloper instead of sqldeveloper. Then it all worked fine.

  • Download SQL Developer for Linux -- does it point to the Win version?

    Hi everyone,
    is it possible that the software behind the Linux version is the windows version instead?
    --> Oracle SQL Developer 1.0, patch 1 (1.0.0.15.27)
    --> --> http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/htdocs/sqllic.html?http://download.oracle.com/otn/java/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper-1527-no-jre.zip
    Best regards Georg

    There are really just 3 different downloads - one for Windows that is bundled with the jre and tools.jar, another that is specific to Mac and the third is the unbundled release. The unbundled is for Windows users that already have a jdk 1.5 or for Linux users (who need to have or get a jdk 1.5). After initial feedback that it was difficult to decide which to select, we decided to list specific to your platform, even though that means a duplicate link behind the scenes.

  • Sql Developer Data Modeler all domains lost after changing to version 3.0

    I have two questions:
    1. Sql Developer Data Modeler - is it still a separate product? Or is it only available as integrated within Sql Developer?
    2. After opening a model created with Data Modeler 2.0 with the new integrated Data Modeler 3.0 I lost all my domain definitions. What can I do to avoid this? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Holger

    Hi Holger,
    Sql Developer Data Modeler - is it still a separate product? Or is it only available as integrated within Sql Developer?Standalone version is here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/overview/index.html
    2. After opening a model created with Data Modeler 2.0 with the new integrated Data Modeler 3.0 I lost all my domain definitions. What can I do to avoid this? Any help would be appreciated.Copy file defaultdomains.xml from DM 2.0 installation to "sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\extensions\oracle.datamodeler\types" directory (if you use version in SQL Developer) or to
    "datamodeler\datamodeler\types" if you use standalone DM 3.0.
    Location of this directory can be set in preferences - it's called system types directory there - it contains: default domains, RDBMS sites, logical types and custom scripts.

  • SQL Developer:Problem with multi byte size after import using excel format

    Hi,
    Need your help. I am trying to export multibyte characters from our China instance(r11i instance) using SQL Developer's export data via Excel format into an R12 Vision instance. I have a staging table with exactly the same structure in both instances. Prior to export to excel, I check the byte size of the sample data below using LENGTH and LENGTHB sql functions and these are the results:
    Sample data = 材料LI(USD)
    LENGTH=9
    LENGTHB=13
    Then, I exported the table as excel file. Afterwards, I used SQL Developer to import the excel file into the table of the target instance. I check the bytesize again and here are the results:
    Sample data = 材料LI(USD)
    LENGTH=9
    LENGTHB=17
    The byte size increased from 13 to 17. I did not change anything on the excel file. Just straight forward export to excel file then imported it to the target instance. How come there is an increase in byte size? Has anyone encountered this in SQL Developer? We really need to export the files as excel.

    Wendell,
    This forum is for handling issues migrating from non-Oracle databases to Oracle databases.
    As this is an Oracle to Oracle issue using SQL*Developer export it would be better to open a new thread in the SQL*Developer forum -
    SQL Developer
    There will be more people there who can help with this problem.

  • Unable to nullify a VARCHAR value with SQL Developer on Linux

    Hi,
    I want to nullify a VARCHAR column value. I clear the field in the editor then click on "commit" button. Here is what I see in console output:
    UPDATE "TBL_COMMON"."TBL_DOMAINS" SET LDAP_SERVER_ADMINDN = WHERE ROWID = 'AAANOUAAFAAAAGIAAA' AND ORA_ROWSCN = '6053030'
    Erreur lors de l'enregistrement de la table "TBL_COMMON"."TBL_DOMAINS" :
    Ligne 1 : Index de colonne non valide: getValidColumnIndex
    It seems there is a bug as NULL keyword is missing (or at least an empty string like ''.
    It works fine on Windows.
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Julien
    Edited by: henryju on Jul 6, 2009 7:07 PM

    The NULL won't show in the Log window, but that's OK (just a bug in the Log window).
    Getting a wrong getValidColumnIndex would suggest the table's column order is messed up (another long standing bug in sqldev): sometimes moving a column in a grid just moves it visually, but leaves the order as it was for generated statements.
    So internally you're probably trying to nullify another (maybe even removed) column.
    For your data's sake, don't ever move columns.
    To reset all positions to default: Preferences - Database - ObjectViewer - Clear persisted table stuff
    Hope that helps,
    K.

    This has been logged as a bug.
    The bad plan/performance has been logged as a bug. SQL Developer didn't hang for me - I was able to cancel the query using the Task Progress panel.
