SQL in Connection with shell scripts
Hello everyone,
I have a conceptual question:
If people like to implement their SQL-Scripts attached on a shell script(Ruby, Perl, or even OS-Shell), what are actually the benefits doing this? Can someone please give me a szenario, which is very effectively if we do it with combination with shell-script.
My second question: does oracle sql developer support this shell combination?
Thank you..
Wrapping sql script in a shell script provides flexibility. Shell can provide better parameter validation than SQL, better output handling, and better error trapping. Personally I would have the sql script separately for purist modularisation reasons, but you can merge the two.
e.g.
getdate.sql
select sysdate from dual;getdate.sh can look like this
sqlplus user/pwd @getdateor
sqlplus user/pwd <<EOSQL
@getdate
EOSQLor
sqlplus user/pwd <<EOSQL
select sysdate from dual;
exit
EOSQLMy preference would be for either of the first two.
You can use various shell facilities to capture the output of the sql statement for use elsewhere. Variations of the above example can be use to get the current database date and time into the shell environment for use in other queries, or in the shell itself.
You can run SQL Developer from the command line, but the tool of choice for command line is SQL Plus.

Error Handling with sql *plus from a shell script
When I execute sql plus in a shell script with the wrong username/pass pair, the shell script hangs without terminating. What is the proper way to execute sql plus in a shell script that will catch a login failure and make sure the script doesn't hang?
Example:
We execute the following in our shell script:
sqlplus ${ORACLE_INST} @./sql/ftp_ledger_put.sql
Now if somebody comes along and alters the login then the script would hang. Is there a way to have the script exit gracefully?Not the most elegant solution but.......
sqlplus <<EOD 2>&1 >some_log_file
user/pwd
@somescript
exit
EOD
Because sqlplus allows for 3 tries at log in if user/pwd is not valid it will try to use subsequent lines. Each will fail.
You have to look in some_log_file to determine success/failure

Hello all,
We are running Oracle 10G on Unix and I am fairly new to Unix. I know how to assign a SQL select statements values to an alias in a SQL environment such as TOAD, such as for example;
Select LogID ID, LogType Type, LogDate Date from audit_logs
where LogDate = sysdate;
That will give the determined values the labels of ID, Type, and Date respectively. But how do I assign the multiple SQL select values to shell script variables in UNIX? I have found how to do it for a single value but not a multiple value.
Thanks in advance
Regards
AlanoThanks for reply.
What we want to do is ensure a relevant file was deleted by a database package\procedure that is part of a third party application. My aim will be to interrogate the relevant table, extract the three relevant fields and join them together into one line\string that will be appended to a lof file
Thanks again in advance

Need to enable Usage Tracking With Shell Script
Hi All
I have patch 11.1.1.6.7 installed in system. I have Redhat linux 6 sytem
Can we enable usage tracking with shell script ? if yes how ?
Thanks
Samit BaghlaHi Samit,
No you can not as per my info because everything to be configured for the usage tracking is via repository and enterprise manager. You need to invoke it in em and rpd you need to do modelling. I still did not understand that why you want to create the shell script !!
Thanks,

Pl/sql procedure with shell script
Hi Guys,
I will be updating some of the columns in the database thru SQL UPDATE stament. I want to make this process automatic. I.e instead of running manually this uodate process, i want to write a unix script which run on cron job. In the update stament I have to compare date like e_create_date > to_date (........, 'yymmdd') and date should be 2 days previous then to date and I would ike to create the spool file which I would like to send through mail.the script will run automatically.
I am confused how to write shell script & sql procedure and how to call it inside the shell script. How can this be done.
Help Appreciated.
Thanks
sonusave the Store procedure as a create_SP.sql in OS
save another testrun.sql
as follows
begin
sp_test('&p_test');
end;
If you are on a Unix or Solaris OS then
open a Shell Script as follows :
and name as test.sh or test.ksh
var='SYSTEM'
export var
sqlplus username/password
@create_SP.sql
-- this created a store procedure on the database
@testrun.sql $var
This will execute the SP with parameter from OS Variable. -

Also, depending on how you connect, you don't need to export TNS_ADMIN. If you establish a local connection you will be connecting to the oracle database process directly using the BEQ protocol, in which case you don't even need a listener process running. For instance:

Verifying oracle connection from shell script
Hi,
Oracle 9.2
Solaris 10
From the shell script ........How can we verify whether oracle connection is successful or not ?
Shell script will prompt the user to enter the oracle schema username, password and tns name.
So, how to verify whether oracle connection has been established or not ??
If user entered schema name & password is correct then proceed further else script will again prompt for schema user name & password.
With RegardsI would not provide the username/password at the command line because everyone could see it when listing processes with standard unix 'ps' command.
Below is an example. I'm sure you can modify it to suit your purpose.
export ORACLE_SID=orcl
oradate=`sqlplus -s <<-EOI

whenever sqlerror exit failure

if [ $sqlerr -ne 0 ]; then
echo "Unable to connect to Oracle"
else
if ! [ "$oradate" ]; then
echo "SQL returns so result."

echo $oradate

Procedure call from SQL*Plus in Korn Shell Script
I am trying to excute a procedure from sqlplus, truncate_audit_table. I doesn't execute. If I do it manually
it executes. I have tried multiple ways, as below. This is inside a Korn Shell scripts that creates the procedure
and counts the aud$ table. All that works, but does not truncate the aud$ table. It does not do it, no error, just
passes it by. Does anybody know why?
${ORACLE_HOME}/bin/sqlplus -s / << EOF | tee -a ${LOG}
set feedback on
@/backup/oracle/orcl/audit/truncate_audit_table.sql
select count(*) from sys.aud$;
exec truncate_audit_table;
exit
EOF
${ORACLE_HOME}/bin/sqlplus -s / << EOF | tee -a ${LOG}
set feedback on
@/backup/oracle/orcl/audit/truncate_audit_table.sql
select count(*) from sys.aud$;
begin
truncate_audit_table;
end;
exit
EOF
This is the procedure that is being called:
create or replace procedure truncate_audit_table
as
begin
execute immediate 'truncate table sys.aud$';
end;
/aud$ is owned by sys. You can see it does the count with or without the "\".
It creates the procedure under SYS , but does not execute it.
Truncate aud$ table...
Procedure created.

Checking database availability with shell script
can anyone help with a script that checks for database availability before 10 P.M and 7 A.M at 5 minites interval and starts a SQL Load of a table once the db is available.
I have no Shell script experience at all but I can amend an already written script.
Please Help !!Dear Timothy,
Within the Oracle software you have installed on your machine, there is a script called "dbstart" within the <ORACLE_HOME>/bin directory. This script provided by Oracle can be easily modified to check whether the server is up and should help solve your problem.

How to pass password to an lftp connection using shell script
Hi
I need to transfer a file to server which support FTPS protocol. I am using lftp utility for this purpose. User credentials used to establish the connection expires after a period(eg: 45 days/3 months) . Can anyone guide me with me an approach to use the password in the shell script which transfer the file to the remote server other than hard coding the password in the script.
Thanks
RamyaSSH is a better option but unfortunately it's not always available. If you worry about security, you could use the bookmark lftp feature:
$ lftp ftp://username@server
Password:
lftp username@server:~> set bmk:save-passwords true
lftp username@server:~> bookmark add yourserver
lftp username@server:~> bookmark list
lftp username@server:~> quit
$ lftp yourserver &
$ ps -aux | grep lftp
The password is stored in ~/.lftp/bookmarks (not encrypted) but you can protect the file with the right permissions as you would do with your certificates with SSH. -

Packagemaker with shell-script?
I pulling my hair here. Trying to make a package with a shell-script, postinstall. When i try to choose it its greyed out so i cant select it at all. permissions are root:admin and 0555, i have no clue whats wrong anymore and i have searched the whole internet!
Using Tiger with Xtools 2.1.
Happy for all suggestions.
thx1) If you have access to a Windows machine , run the problematic query in windows 'rwrun' and see whether there is any output That way we can find out whether this a 'shell' related problem . [ ie the way cmd lines are passed ]
2) Backup and Edit the rwrun.sh script . There you can see
rwrun $* # or something to this effect
Instead of '$*' , put your command line args inside directly .
Then just simply run using rwrun.sh < no args >
Again , this is to see whether this problem is due to the way shell handles parameters
3) You can even try setting env variables [ as in reports.sh ] and trying 'rwrun' in shell prompt itself
rwrun <.....> # no .sh
4) Please consult SuSe shell docs and see whether % [ or may be ' and \ ] has any special meaning.
Thanks

Can anyone here help me (getting my feet wet) with an addition to a profile (applmgr) that I am trying to make - in the form of a shell script.
I have the following lines in the profile file - but each time I log into the server as applmgr, I get the error following
if $HOSTNAME=hostname1
tnen
. /u01/xxees/EBST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env
fi
if $HOSTNAME=hostname2
./u01/xxees/EBST2/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env
fi
The error message I am getting us
-bash: /local/ebsuser/applmgr/.profile: line 39: syntax error near unexpected token `fi'
-bash: /local/ebsuser/applmgr/.profile: line 39: `fi'
Thank you all.
Edited by: 864641 on Jun 13, 2012 1:49 PMFrom the Error Message at line Number 38, I feel that, the file /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOST.env (where $HOST can be "hostname01" or "hostname02") has been modified and has unmatched if.
Also, If you are using the variable HOSTNAME, I feel that the env file should be like /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env in which case your script will be like:
if [$HOSTNAME == "hostname01"]; then
. /u01/xxees/EBSTEST/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env
fi
if [$HOSTNAME == "hostname02"]; then
. /u01/xxees/EBSTEST2/apps/apps_st/appl/APPSEBST_$HOSTNAME.env
fi
Hope that this two things will help in resolving the issue. -
Unix: SQL Server Connection with ODBC (CRsqls24.so)

Thanks!First off, let me say that in the past (pre v9) when I've tried to use Windows logins with datasources, it never worked. But that doesn't mean that they finally got it working, just that I stopped trying.
What I was referring to in my post is that once you have CF installed, you need to go to the Windows Services screen, open each of the CF processes, click on the LOGIN tab, and change it from the default services login to be whatever WIndows login you have setup in Active Directory. Then restart CF so that it's process is now running under that login with its credentials. Then go to SQL Admin and setup that same login and give it access to the database you want to access. Then go to CF Datasource menu and setup the datasource as you did previously. If CF's support of Windows authentication for datasources does in fact now work, you should be in business.
If it doesn't work, then you'll need to do as I said earlier, and setup SQL logins for the CF servers to use, and then in the CF Datasource setup screens you would specify that login info in the same way that you would have given it the "sa" login info.
