We are currently in the process of migrating some applications from Oracle 10 to 11. Our admins have setup a new development system for us with an Oracle 11 instance. Regarding performance the new system behaves more or less the same than our old, e.g. when executing SQLs we notice hardly any performance differences and those we find are slightly in favour of the new system.
But now we discovered that the time it takes to establish a database connection via SQL*Plus is longer on the Oracle 11 system. Running the following code
    sqlplus -s user/pw@database <<END
    quit
ENDa thousand times takes ~60s under Oracle 10 but ~140s under Oracle 11. This may not seem much but we are running a test framework consisting of a bunch of shell scripts where several thousand connections are openend via SQL*Plus to execute some SQLs, so that even this small time difference results in rather huge difference in total runtime. The SQLs themself require roughly the same time in both databases, as already mentioned above they are in fact slightly faster in Oracle 11.
To analyze the time difference I ran a trace for the connect with the following parameters in sqlnet.ora
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=4
TRACE_UNIQUE_CLIENT=ONand found out that there is a time difference of about 70ms during the connect handshake:

    (1) [22-MAR-2013 13:33:40:618] nscon: got NSPTRS packetAny ideas what could be the reason for this time difference? Something in our network configuration or something else?

With local connections - I do not think a TCP packet send from an IP to the same IP, leaves the interface as an actual wire protocol/signal. If I'm correct, then running local connection tests will be mostly useless in checking the actual network infrastructure.
Tests 3 and 4 should be showing the same connection times as the same physical network infrastructure is used - only the direction is reversed in the tests.
I would assume that port settings on the switches and interface settings on the routers treat packets equally in both directions between 2 servers. But this could in part explain the problem if this is not the case. In a case of a router for example, the 1st test's ingress interface is the egress interface of the 2nd test (and vice versa). Configurations can differ substantially between interfaces on the same router. Likewise if there is a firewall - as different rule sets are applied in each test and these rule sets could differ.
So I would not be too quick to state that this is definitely not a network problem. But I agree that based on the small percentage difference (assuming comparable tests), it does not look like a network issue.
The next step is to determine what the delay is between the listener accepting the client connection, and the connection being serviced by a dedicated server process.
This will require listener tracing - tracing the time from when the listener accepted the connection (and parsed the TNS connection string), to handing off the connection to the dedicated server process.
As a comparison test, you can also test shared server connections. Dispatcher processes (of the db instance) register themselves with the listener. The shared server client hand off is thus done to an existing server process - no need for the Listener to make a kernel call to load and initialise an executable image.
Shared connections are typically faster than dedicated connections in this respect.
If there is a major time difference, then it means some kind of issue with the listener dealing with dedicated servers as oppose to dispatcher hand off's. As both connections would have had very similar network transit time - which means the connection time difference is related directly to dealing with a dedicated server connection request and hand off.
You can also substitute the oracle executable with a wrapper - and troubleshoot the actual dedicated server startup. I've only done this with Oracle XE 10.2 though and with local IPC connections. Unsure how robust this will be for testing purposes via TCP using 11g.

  • Restricting the user to operate DML's from SQL PLUS Environment

how to Restrict the user to operate DML statements from SQL PLUS Environment.

Once you restrict SCOTT user to not be able to do an INSERT command, the SQL*Plus returns an error for user SCOTT when he tries to execute an INSERT statement.
Note however, that this is enforced by SQL*Plus, not the database!
Look into the use of product_user_profile from Oracle documentation for more information.
    SQL> insert into product_user_profile values('SQL*Plus', 'SCOTT', 'INSERT', NULL, NULL, 'DISABLED', NULL, NULL) ;

For this, you need to start the service (and you should be installed 11g Database, not client) as follows:
isqlplusctl startThen using port number from $ORACLE_HOME/install/portlist.ini connect to GUI interface of SQL*Plus

  • Can I use Same ADF application with SQL server 2008 as well as Oracle 11g?

    Hi ,
I have created a application in ADF(Using J-Developer). I used SQL server 2008 as Database Provider. I have same Database in Oracle 11g. I want to connect my appliction to Oracle 11g database. Thanks

    Hi,
I have created Entity object and View object for every page in my application. That objects created from sql server database. Application is working fine with sql server. But when connected with Oracle 11g. It is giving following errors:
On clicking search control it gives: ORA 00923 From keyword not found where expected.
On searching with perticular field it gives: ORA-01722: Invalid Number.

  • Is the SQL * Plus Worksheet included in the Oracle 10g Express Edition?

    Hello All,
I need to install Oracle 10g for a SQL class that I will be taking this year. I will be installing it in my laptop (Pentium 4, 1GB RAM). I was told by the Professor that I needed to have the SQL*Plus Worksheet. I would like to know which version of Oracle do I need to install, and If it includes the SQL*Plus Worksheet.
This is my first time working & installing Oracle, so I would appreciate if anyone could guide me thru this process.
    Thanks a lot,
    Ed

    No, it is not included.
However, the same functionality, and more, is in Oracle SQL Developer - also available free and download-able from the same area as Oracle Express Edition.
Ask your prof why he want Worksheet. If it's only for the ability to scroll and correct previous SQL (eg: easier time correcting mistakes), and loading scripts, ask if SQL Developer would be allowed. It's much superior and allows you to use XE, which will not sink your laptop like the EE version will.

  • Linked Servers - Sql server 2005 to connect to Oracle 11g using ldap.ora instead of tnsnames.ora

We have a SQL Server 2005 64bit box that needs a linked server created to Oracle 11g 64bit box. I have all the Oracle client software installed and can successfully connect to the Oracle database using SQL+ on the SQL Server 2005 64bit box. When I create
the linked server and select the OraOledb.Oracle provider, I get the TNSNames error. The Oracle server does not use tnsnames.ora it uses OLAP.ora to resolve. How do I get Linked server to stop trying to connect via TNSNames and use the OLAP.ora file instead?
I can't find any articles for this specific issues. All Oracle examples tell you to use TNSNAMES. The Oracle server is not under my companies control so I can not force the vendor to use tnsnames instead of OLAP.

    Hi,
    Have you got a resolution?
    Thank you.

the above data will go on,by scrolling upward it's not appearing,
    2. I have set linesize 4500 and pagesize 50000, but no change occure.
    3. As in dos prompt we set page to appear width wise, similarly it is possible to see this in sql/plsq(sql plus).
    thanks.

If you want to query long data, then use

  • Turn off display on sql*plus and increase memory for oracle?

I want to turn off the output display on SQL*PLUS window and SPOOL the output to a file since the result is very big. i tried to SET TERM OFF but it doesn't work. Anybody knows what's the problem? or is there some other commands to use? My oracle is 9i. thx!!! And anybody knows how to increase the memory usage size for Oracle's jrew.exe? it's too slow when i try to retrieve some big size data from oracle.

I just answered this question on the OTN -> General forum. You could try the SQL*Plus startup switch -s to startup SQL*Plus in silent mode, eg:
    C:\SQLPLUS -S

    optimizer_capture_sql_plan_baselines FALSE FALSE
    optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines TRUE TRUE
abd there are no sql_plan_baselines at all ?When there is no sql_plan_baselines at all then there will be no plans captured into the SPB (SQL Plan Baseline) providing your above two parameters setting.
However, if there is already a sql baseline for a given sql statement then any execution of the same sql statement (with the same force matching signature) which results into a plan that is not into the SPM baseline, will be captured and will be given a enabled and not accepted status.

  • SQL Plus commands hangs up in oracle DB

    Hi,
I could notice my Database is not UP and Running.
So I logged onto server and did sqlplus to connect to Database as sysdba..

Worth a try, but will only help if there are 'expired' archivelogs ... that is, archivelogs that have been deleted outside of rman ---- using os file delete commands (or in the case of the OP, asmcmd commands)
Same should also be done on backups, but same caveat applies.
If RMAN dosent find any expired archive log , then delete the archived log based on retention window .
Again, worth a try, but may have no effect if the OP hasn't been regularly taking full or level 0 backups.  Regardless of the retention window, nothing is obsolete that is newer than the most recent level 0 backup.
After that go to the background_dump_dest and delete the old trc and trm file .
This has no effect on FRA usage numbers, and since it appears that the OP is using the FRA, it will not help at all.
it will make space and you will be able to login on DB by sqlplus .
Then analysis your daily archive log generation and based on that , increase your FRA.
In addition to reviewing his backup procedures and schedule.

  • SQL Plus in 11g

    Hi all,
    <br><br>
After installing Oracle 11g, I noticed SQL Plus is not installed as part of the software group. I've been advised to use SQL Developer, yet I feel more comfortable in using SQL Plus. Also, I noticed SQL Plus is part of the Oracle DB documentation.

How can I install Oracle SQL Plus version 11 with Oracle DB 11g software?</b>

SQLPlus is no longer available for 11g, isqlplus neither is. The only option you have is the regular sqlplus CLI (Command Line Interface), and the sqlDeveloper tool, which is no longer installed as a standalone product, but embedded with the 11g Installation.
It was notified by means of the dessuport notice from Oracle through Metalink Note 359855.1 (isqlplus), 359859.1 (sqlplusw.exe), which states an official statement recommends to migrate to either SQL*Plus command line (CLI), Oracle Application Express, or Oracle SQL Developer.

  • Simple way to connect Oracle 11g XE with MS SQL Server 2000

Is there a simple way to access SQL server database/ Tables within from Oracle 11g XE (Windows-32bit) on same machine. I am a novice so kindly keep it simple. Thanks

To connect to a SQL Server you need to use an Oracle product called Database gateway for ODBC which uses a 3rd party ODBC driver to connect to the SQL Server.
The easiest set up is to install DG4ODBC release 11.2 on the SQL Server. How to configure the Database Gateway for ODBC is described in note:
How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on Windows 32bit to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install          [Document 466225.1]
when you install DG4ODBC on a 32bit Windows operating system and the instructions for a 64bit Widnows operating system can be found in this note:
How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on 64bit Windows Operating Systems to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install          [Document 1266572.1]
The database gateway for ODBC is available for free from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html
Please make sure you select the 32bit or 64bit Windows operating system depending on the platform where you've installed the SQL Server and on which you now install the gateway and download the <win32/64>_11gR2_gateways.zip CD.
Once downloaded, unzip it and install it using the Oracle Universal installer. Make sure you select the product Database Gateway for ODBC (there's also a dedicated SQL server gateway called Database Gateway for MS SQL Server - this gateway is NOT for free and it requires a separate license).
